Okinawan Karate: The Science of Fighting Dirty

  • Many forget to realize that there's a difference between fighting to win versus fighting to survive. Karate as a self-defense aims at survival; without rules, without time limits and without weight classes. Therefore, actively drilling what many consider "dirty" techniques can potentially save your life one day.
    We are a group on a mission to return Karate to its roots through the use of Kata as self-defense.

      Yes a huge reminder that karate isn’t a sport it’s for true self defense and as well the practitioner who trains and understand instead of saying the typical shit like keyboard warriors say it doesn’t work it’s the practitioner not the martial art many and I mean many don’t understand but again people have choice to pick what they like so I’m not complaining but respect their choice of martial art instead of always shitting on karate 🥋..

    Now this is called REAL karate. Not the WKF/Point Fighting karate or Knockdown/Kickboxing karate. Loved the movements, it's brutal, dirty, violent but beautiful. It definitely is a worthy art for Batman fight choreography.

    I remind my father who had served 11 years in Korean Army Special Force(The Black Beret) as a officer. He has black belts; 4th of Kuksul HKD, 4th of TKD(70's old school) and other techniques from various Korean Martial arts.
    He often taught me moves like your video, My family moved a lot due to his occupation and I was a new kid, big and chubby, easily picked as victim by local bullies. He said "Not for fight back, but make sure them me not a easy target." and showed moves onto me. It was painful.
    By him, Some nasty moves from old school TaeKwonDoh which still had similarities from the original source, Shotokan Karate, were taught for me and had saved me to escape from lots of troubles.
    Definitely efficient moves, I guarantee.
    Thank you for great works.

    Agreed. For me, there is no such thing as "dirty fighting". Anything goes to survive - biting, scratching, eye gouging, weapons, attacking in the dark, etc. But then you must only consider fighting if you think that the price you might need to pay for the consequences later was worth it. Nice job on the video!

    You will fight like you train. Training should include, what some would consider, 'illegal' techniques. I think karate should be trained in a realistic manner to survive a violent street altercation. This is what karate was originally intended for.

    That is the meaning of the word ''Kime'' : bringing all you physically and mentally have to survive. There is no first attack in Karate, therefore the act of violence which consists to attack someone who seems to be weaker is actually ''fighting dirty''' ! But doing all that you can to protect yourself is self-defense !

  • @derrickboyd9225
    @derrickboyd9225 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's incredible I don't care if it is a weapon it you have to become a weapon in order to defend yourself if it's anybody that tries to hurt you or attack you or even say something wrong with you it's all about unlocking the power and using that power to save a Life and your own life or any other life depending on how you use it as how it is in karate you keep at it and it'll work much better in your favor 🥋👊💪😉✌️👊🥋

    • @tatumergo3931
      @tatumergo3931 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Karate in a civilian context is solely for the purpose of self-defense. It shouldn't be used for settling arguments or disagreements, it's too deadly for that.
      In the context of warfare it is well suited to dispatch the enemy quickly and effectively when the situation demands it, or any other means are not available.
      It is a pure form of violence that is best utilized for defending oneself and others by means of violence (the true meaning of self-defense). Therefore the reason for the old masters cautionary advice of karate not to be used to initiate fights.
      P.S. Violence is never the answer, until violence is the only answer!

    Pardon me being the weeb, but after reading "Shamo" and hearing about Karate specifically designed to brutally destroy the human body, rather than just stop an attack, and assumed it to be hyperbole or something that had been lost to time, in a practical sense.
    I am both positively surprised and terrified to see such a menacing series of techniques.
    Incredibly skillful.

    • @tatumergo3931
      @tatumergo3931 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The history of karate is complex, originally created from a mixture of indigenous fighting methods and chinese martial arts. It was solely practice in the beginning by the okinawan warrior class. With the conquest of the Ryukyu kingdom by the samurai Satsuma clan, it mixed with japanese yawara (jujutsu) and propagated throughout the islands. It was taught clandestine because of the restrictions imposed by the japanese, until modern times when it was introduced in the scholastic system and then Japan itself. For a time it was part of the judo curriculum until prof. Gichin Funakoshi and Dr. Jigoro Kano parted ways. It was then that it was modified into the modern version aimed at a form of physical fitness and sports development.
      The original karate was designed as a method of self-defense and also for combat.

      Rushiano
      The pad of the foot and the heel are highly impact resistant. The arch? Not so much. Hence why it is a more common injury area for fasciitis.
      A fitting comparison would be to get hit on the crown of your skull as opposed to the edge of your jaw. Both are parts of the head, but one can be used as a weapon (head butt), while the other is usually a sure fire way to switch your lights off in 1 hit (KO/concussion).

    Great video as always gentlemen, although I take a quick issue with the strikes to the arch of the foot at 0:30 -- it's a rare self-defense scenario where your assailant is barefoot, and even then there are far more effective targets to strike from that position. Again, I hate to be a TH-cam critic, but just a quick observation from what is otherwise a fantastic video.

    Great vid, I'm old kenpo guy. Question, is Okinawan karate the same as Shotokan and Goju, etc ? I never looked into so called traditional arts, very interesting.

    • @tatumergo3931
      @tatumergo3931 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Shotokan was the development by Gichin Funakoshi for scholastic application of karate. It originally came from the okinawan styles of shorin ryu, but then was modified to become a modern dynamic method of japanese kickboxing, which was a response to western methods of boxing and kickboxing (like French savate).
      Today modern sports karate has become a farce of what shotokan was and karate-do in general. The okinawans still cling to the old methods shown here in this presentation.
      American Ed Parker's Kenpo karate developed from a compilation of different karate methods that were used in Hawaii by the japanese community there. His interpretation of the katas at the time were an attempt to make sense out of them.
      There's also an art style in Japan called Kempo or Kenpo, which it's based on Japanese swordsmanship and jujutsu (yawara). The name itself is just descriptive of the method of fighting with a katana sword and other weapons, and also different applications of unarmed combat.
      Then there's the modern creation of Doshin So a former Japanese soldier and spy, who studied kungfu and mixed it with different Japanese styles like judo, aikido and japanese karate-do to create his own style of shorinji kenpo.

      This method is being particularly developed by like minded individuals who seek to go back to the original roots of ryukyu karate.
      Members are besides Michael Nguyen and Aaron Garcia, Patrick McCarthy, Iain Abernathy plus others...

      Sorry to hear there isn't much to offer in Germany, we don't have any experience there so we can't offer any recommendations. However, if we ever visit, we'll be sure to make an announcement and hopefully we can train together!

    I believe this and aikido/aikikai is the most realistic self defense arts the eyes,nostrils,eardrums,ears,mouth,toungue,throat is not banned like in ufc or mma.

      Aikido/ aikikai are modern interpretations of the older methods of yawara, like Aikijujutsu. Which was a very effective method of jujutsu used by the samurai. Still found today in some koryu styles like Takenouchi ryu and shinjo ryu.

    The concept has similarities with JKD

    • @tatumergo3931
      @tatumergo3931 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      JKD is what Bruce Lee tried to rationalise about real fighting, his fighting philosophy developed from the idea that striking and grappling needed to be integrated into each other. It can be said that Bruce Lee's JKD was the precursor to MMA, but this already existed way before, it has just disappeared from lack of use and sportification of styles. Which involved a lot of over-specialization of the art in question.
      When researchers started looking into the original methods of many martial arts, they found that they all contained elements of grappling and striking.

    did he just try to bite into a forearm for a choke? lol

    • @karateculture
      @karateculture  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes he did! it works if you use it as a distraction to escape, instead of just biting the arm to stop the choke

    • @complexblackness
      @complexblackness 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just looked at it, he bit at the initial stage before it was sunk in. Thus making his "attacker" either abandon the choke or hesitate to do it.
      Therefore giving the "victim" time to work an escape.

      Back in my youth days that was the first time I saw that technique applied in real life, while waiting in line at a movie theater by my then jujutsu and karate teacher. Only that time there was no running away, the whole class when into the movie theater to watch the Bruce Lee film, and when we exited the theater the individual was still on the floor writhing in pain.
      A very eye opening lesson of how self-defense was going to be taught, learned and applied.
      P.S. Don't give suckers a second chance!

    Is it just me, or is this similar to Krav Maga?

    • @tatumergo3931
      @tatumergo3931 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Krav Maga is a method developed by jewish freedom fighters to defend themselves during the times of the formation of the state of Israel and the jewish homeland.
      It took actual applicable techniques from all known martial arts at the time. Alongside boxing, wrestling, savate and judo, it also took elements from the lesser known karate-do.
      It is a quick and easy practical method of training troops and civilians in basic hand-to-hand fighting and self-defense. Today it has become a style of itself, but basically it is a compilation of different effective methods of fighting.

    A BJJ purple belt would end you. Your escapes to chokes are laughable, try to actually bite into the forearm that secures the choke and see what happens. The person who's choking you can break your jaw. I'm not hating but I can see this channel is trying to introduce practicality into karate. If so, then eliminate these moves, they don't work
