I was a bit annoyed watching this. Mainly because Tom Cruise's character was the biggest and most utter cowardice. Like "yeah I'm just gonna stay in the sand while a lady skirmishes with an unknown 7ft being, I'm just gonna look dramatic so my act of being a complete pussy is justified. " Fuck that character.
Something I think about whenever I remember this movie. It's said that the aliens are only winning because of their reset powers. Meaning humanity must've beaten them for their reset to kick in. I see a lot of comments about it, so here goes. The exosuit to me was actually an interesting point in the movie. At first they just look clumsy. More of a hindrance than anything. Later on, we see Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt utilizing the suits to their full potential. It turns out the exosuits are actually very powerful, but nobody (nobody still alive) was properly trained in how to use them.
If I recall, apparently the suits themselves can kill the hosts if used too "well" so its a interesting factor to count for combined with your plausible reason.
That's true. And he never had reset before then. He just assumed that was it, and if he's gunna due then he's taking the son of a bitch down with him. That's a man with some brass balls
That alien front line soldier was a badass! His objective was to clear all enemies at his position for the main army group to arrive, and he did... but died to a noob! So unfortunate
@@Tovinthorn You know, a 1:12 ratio isn't that bad, especially considering if even 1000 (it is estimated there are MILLIONS, I mean their called Mimics), that's 12000 enemy soldiers killed for 1000 of yours. Statistically speaking, he did his job PERFECTLY.
1:57 This moment really changed the movie for me. I went in blind. No knowledge, no spoilers, no trailers. I saw the movie advertised on the day and made a decision to check it out. I think this is one of the most underrated moments because, up to that point, Rita is advertised as a literal and metaphorical saviour in the war. Then she takes a hit like another other soldier, and it gives you an inkling of who the real hero of the movie will be.
@@Torraim genocidal organ and jinroh is still more gritty grim and maybe not that much gory but yeah the atomic anime is slow mo cuz no way nuclear is not instant disintegration
she just one of the soldiers and just as vulnerable as them. This movie did a great job at female empowerment by portray women can be strong without some superpower or things handed to them. which is really ironic because Captain Marvel, Mulan(2020) are created for the sake of female empowerment couldn't do the same thing in a whole movie
1:57 hit me at first, then 3:05 when the mimic surfaces from the ground took it to another level for me. The sheer awe of a mimics prowess and efficiency at being an annihilating machine captivated me. The way it made short work of the Exosuits in that short 25 seconds of obliteration absolutely stole it for me. Then the Alpha arrives, and the detail of its apex predator-esque appearance... I guess we should be grateful we haven’t had to encounter such a protagonist of a species. Their capabilities are something of nightmares!
2:55 I like how the time travel abilities of these things are hinted before Cage's death, when the squad leader knew they were coming and a Mimic was already waiting in the foxhole to clear them out for the wave to come. There is most likely a timeline before this that the squad there cleared the incoming Mimic wave and halted their counter attack so this one was there to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Also the guy who shoots a shoulder-mounted rocket and soon after gets a retaliation shot. So in previous timeline he probably hit and killed one alien, then the alien resurrected, knew where the shot was coming, dodged and shot right back.
I am not convinced. This seems to me to be the first time this battle is played because there is low chance humans succeeded in any of the previous though it could be reverted cause some importent mimic died. More important argument is that all timelines on human side should be identical till the moment of landing so there is no way Cruise character appears suddenly in that timeline if he wasn't in the earlier ones.
@@wojtek1582 Thats not how the timetravel power works. Every time one of the blue Mimics dies, it travels one day back in time and this time learns to avoid the situation that killed it. Like the soldiers themselves say, the operation should've been a secret and the aliens shouldn't have predicted where they land. But the moment they reach the beach they get ambushed and many airships get shot down right away. Which means at some point in a previous timeline the operation successfully surprised the aliens, probably got way further than the beach and humans killed at least one Blue Mimic. From a non-time travelers perspective you see only one beach fight that turns into massacre for some inexplicable reason. From the perspective of Blue Mimics, plenty of Blue Mimics have already fought in the beach many times and died multiple times. Non-time traveler only spends 10-15 minutes on that beach, while the Blue Mimics might've spent a week or even months on that same beach.
In Japanese his gun was saying: "Safety On!" then, "Safety Released!" The movie is based off a manga, cool to see they added a detail like that! The text was in Japanese too. When he ran out of ammo it flashed Reload/リロード
I love how he cowers in fear on the battlefield and in doing so distracts one of the greatest fighters on the field, getting her killed. And then minutes later blows himself up with a claymore to kill an Alpha. It's like that first act of bravery marks the transformation between coward and hero for the rest of the movie. Also very fitting considering how the movie ends as well.
It gets covered in the movie. Everyone's been impressed into service with little training. Nobody actually knows how to use the suits to their full potential besides the main characters because they had the time to learn how to use them.
dogboy0912 Even with if they could use the exo suits more effectively their still quite shit, even in concept, as well as in reality. The 2 main characters can use it quite effectively, in a few instances, but that raises it's own problems, as well, on top of not really being better, or used more effectively then anything we have today. The exo suits in the manga were orders of magnitude better, with only one draw back as far I know and it would be rare to run across it in the first place or I could be wrong and it has none AFAIK but that's my 2 cents.
And the main character gets sweeped up by the first robot he encounters in that scene... so true, those exosuits kicks ass ! For suicide acceleration, that is
If you want to get in the nitpicking, yeah half of scifi movie military equipment is useless or obsolete in general considering a modern aircraft today drops ordnance and launches missiles literal miles away from its target.. It depends on the author and when it was written, but even a lot of books feature technology with outdated capabilities, or are simply written by people who have no sense of scale. I would wager the original designs would be incredibly jarring. The exosuits in the movie are believable in how they incorporate various pieces of kit that already exist considering it takes place in the near future.
I've got no doubt that the manga/book it came from, the way it was described/used must have been way more logic/realistic(I can't be sure since i've never heard of it before today..). But as you said, movies have a way to transforms anything into pure epicness ! ... or shit on it, and from those 2 short descriptiions, the video above illustrate perfectly the latter. Even the most retarded soldier wouldn't touch an exo that make him an even easier prey to grab and kill in a second. One's life is more precious than a piece of junk. Have you ever tryed to fight a lion while sitting in a kid electric car, armed with 2x 9.mm on both sides, thats my best comparison, I would rather run for my life than stay stuck in that situation.
2:20. After watching the entire movie, you understand this line differently. The Omega has the ability to rewind time 1 day when an Alpha dies, and they use their knowledge from the previous version of the day to fight off humans the next time they encounter them. Well, if you think about it, the very 1st time the humans launched their surprise attack on the Mimics, they probably almost won until 1 of the Alphas died, then the Omega restarted the day that 1st time. Ever since then, the humans were less and less successful at fighting the Mimics to the point where this to the Mimics could've been their 100th, their 500th, or even their 1,000th time fighting the humans, and the human invasion was soon failing as we saw at the beginning of the film. If Cage/Cruise hadn't killed the Alpha at that 1 moment then eventually the Mimics would have been able to reach a point where they could have beaten the humans so easily that no Alpha would've died and they would have won for good.
This was literaly their winning turn. When Cage deserted the mimics attacked London meaning they won the battle so it was super lucky that was the moment he got covered in their blood.
It's even greater because due to how their power works, THEIR OWN ACTIONS led to their defeat: 1st human counterattack, probably almost successful until they kill an Alpha, then the day is reset, and it keeps getting reset, with the humans losing a lottle more progress every time until they're back at the beach, but, Cage's character was always a part of the invasion, however, as the timeline of the invasion keeps changing due to the mimics, he either survives past the beach or, due to the way the fight is going in response to the changes caused by the mimics, he moves to a location he never was in the first place: the foxhole where he kills the Alpha.
To those asking what the point of the suits are: Yes, they reduce mobility, but they also give you super strength and are equipped with high-caliber weaponry. Regular caliber weaponry has NO EFFECT on the Mimics, and soldiers would be losing far more mobility by only equipping their trucks and vehicles with high caliber weaponry, since a vehicle is more likely to be taken down and unable to be put back up, and also take up far more space than a soldier in a mechsuit.
2 years late but I’m pretty sure the suits turn out to be in a “locked state”, the one lady with the sword has an unlocked suit which is why she’s able to use the shoulder guns and maintain fighting ability
There’s so much wrong with what you said. First off, no. The suits aren’t slow. They’re bloody fast. Problem is, it can only be used by soldiers and those experienced with it. Second, the shoulder cannons aside, the suit main arm mounted machine gun is chambered in 5.56. Aka, the same caliber used in US army m16s and m4 carbines lol.
I always wondered how many times they invaded. The first time they did they probably won a lot of land until they killed an Alpha, since the aliens did not know about the invasion. They were unprepared and the humans probably landed unopposed. So following the movie's logic, Cage died a lot of times before in previous invasions, in different places and by different means, until in this cycle, he got an Alpha and stealed its power by luck.
Yeah, that was a bit scary. Just a reminder that he still got the time reset power from the aliens' blood. Rated R much? Seems like this movie was better off with an R-rating like the adapted manga All You Need is Kill.
Darth Vader The Alien's weren't supposed to know that the humans were invading the beach. The reason the Aliens know is because they have the power to turn back time, so when the humans invaded the first time, they reversed time back a day. But when the main character killed the Alpha alien and got covered in its blood, he gained the power to go back in time every time he died.
Fun Fact: When the weapon screen flashes in japanese at 2:52 and other times, it's an easter egg, as this is based off a japanese manga called All You Need is Kill
How is that an Easter egg, though? It's like accidentally changing the language settings of a video game or computing device and saying it is an Easter egg because it was made in Japan.
@@Cristian-vl8pg Uhm out of all languages in the world the chose japanese. It’s obviously a subtle reference. A japanese story turned into a movie and they reference japan. Why didn’t they make the language german or spanish or russian etc? No, they chose japanese. Obviously a little easter egg.

If the aliens are using time powers to reset the battle every time until they get a favorable ending, perhaps the reason MC survived for so long was because his safety was on and so the aliens never designated him as a threat and never targeted him.
Not to rain on your parade and I understand your point, kind of like predator doesn’t attack people unless their armed but the people in this are literally wearing tanks with guns strapped to their hands. The aliens won’t know if the safety’s on they’ll just see the literal guns for hands and kill on sight. Especially if they were at a loss before they would kill anything and everything. Now if the safety feature somehow retracted the guns into the mech so they weren’t visible at first, then I would agree with you
@@snusemcgoose1001 My point was more that in previous iterations of the battle the aliens never saw him fire his gun. Not whether they knew his safety was on or not. So they assumed he wasn’t going to fire back and based on that they prioritized him very low on the kill list. Instead they went after people like Full Metal Bitch and the people in his squad that actually fired back. It’s just a theory but it might explain why he was the only one alive after his entire squad gets eviscerated.
@@snusemcgoose1001 The aliens targeted those who were armed. The fact that Cage's gun was in safety he was not picked up by the Aliens as an armed person. The Aliens would know, they're advanced enough to know. If we have the tech to know when a fighter jet is armed and prepared to fire, surely they can know when a device is armed.

"You're going to miss your moment!" Oddly prophetic. Had Cage not gone into the battle, the whole movie never would have happened and that would have been the end of humanity. As ever, the NCO knows what he's doing more than anyone realizes.
the movie is choke full of Gnosticism. in Gnosticism we, the humans, are imprisoned by Saturn, the god of time. we are condemned to infinite cycles in a false reality, and we must break out of it. so sergeant Farrell - man of valor, says a lot of "prophetic stuff": "battle the great redeemer, the fiery crucible in which heroes are forged", "we are masters of our own fate", "Cage is under the delusion he doesn't belong here", "tomorow morning you will be baptized, born again", "destiny calls"
To be fair, Cage was far more of a hindrance than a help. They could have killed Cage at any time since they knew where he would be, but they let him live because a) he was no threat to them and b) he distracted several HVTs long enough to get them killed. In the (possibly thousands of) loops that the aliens experienced before the first one shown to the audience, they must have recognized that Cage was uniquely detrimental to his team and therefore put him at the bottom of the list of targets to kill (and only then after he helped them kill their HVTs). In the loops immediately before this one, Cage was likely the last to be killed in the foxhole by the ambushing alien. This is the first loop in which he managed to kill the alien, and therefore warranted the appearance of the alpha who could determine whether it was an event worth resetting for. I guess what I'm getting at is that Cage went into battle thousands of times before we see this loop, and each time he probably either died stupidly or helped his team get killed off. He just got lucky enough this time to actually kill an enemy.
Yeah it's a little stupid to watch them walk like that... The manga makes so much more sense than this! Iron monger/ Iron Man style with no flight but more agility.
Haxofall, you're out dude, you just shot yourself in the... KNEE !! To the OP tho, I dont think they do, they only serve cerveza last time I went... Pretty sure it was japan...... ... or was it Janero ? Gosh... Can't remember !

Reminder that this movie was based on an amazing light novel called “All You Need Is Kill.” The plot is more-or-less the same but if you enjoyed this, I strongly recommend the novel. It goes so much more in depth
The scene really shows the aliens reset powers. At some point the squad must have managed to hold their ground and ambush the mimics, blunting their advance. So a reset was done and a mimic was waiting and exactly the right spot to reveal itself amidst the middle of the squad to take them out before they could strike.
I love the aliens they made for this movie, they're fantastic. Also, after years of not really thinking about it: Finally realised the reason for them putting themselves in danger - the aliens I mean. They never attacked, they were _hiding beneath the sand all the time_ because they _knew the humans were coming._ They wanted to set up an ambush, and it's quite a good ambush to be honest. The aliens aren't immortal, they can just kill a metric ton of humans before dying. So this was probably their most efficient way of stymying an invasion in its tracks at the same time as inflicting severe losses to combat operative enemies without being on the offensive.
I like the moment at 4:20. Major Cage acts bravely only because he knows he's dead anyway. He just decides to do at least one right thing before his death.
@@toomanyaccounts yeah imagine something burns and melts your face and other organs and ur nerve system couldnt even reacts to it that death scene gives me shivers
I like the idea they put into those suits, at first you thought they were terrible, full of opening, heavy and slow. But instead, each soldier can carry many heavy firearms with a booster. also imagine the amount of heavy caliber ammunition each soldier can carry with those suits. They are really realistic in this situation to be honest, human are fighting with things that even a rifle can barely hurt, and with those suit, now everyone can fire like a IFV tank. Why making a fully close heavy armor suit while their batteries won't even last long. Even if that's a lightweight suit, there is no ways 2 cannons on the back with those big size barrels on the arm which look like grenade launchers and machine guns would be light. Also, please don't forget the timeline inside the movie was 2015.
That is actually some amazing acting when he is on the beach and terrified while everybody is being beaten to a pulp. Like he was so committed to it and you know there is like nothing actually around him any where near as scary as it looks like it is.
Did you notice how the aliens hesitate after the alpha arrives? That's because they haven't seen this yet (hence why the alpha gets surprised). They move so fast and so precisely only because they have foreknowledge, otherwise they are much clumsier and slower.
I love how the scene shows how Cage feels in the Battlefield, he has been promoting army enlisment, the new exo skeletons and Rita Vrataski as the definitive hope for mankind survival, and the first thing he sees is his squad mates easily dying, a enemy who seems to always be one step ahead(which they are, but Cage doesn't know their full capabilites yet), Rita fighting without a semblance of hope and easily getting killed in the fight, imagine losing all hope in the battle which you were not prepared even to see Earth's mightiest soldier easily dying in front of you, no wonder he tried to run away, cause it was futile.

2010 - 2015 were the best years for si-fi action movies. Masterpieces like pacific rim, prometheus and this saw light in that period, after that I haven't seen movies as good as those

The way he woke up from the dream was just so darn relatable. Not because he had the instant realization that it was just a dream but because he woke up with cuffs on. Edit: those aliens be acting like my dog when my father gets home from work.
I once bought a handheld voice recorder direct from Japan because no one else sold it, it was exactly like this. No online help, no TH-cam videos I just kept pressing buttons till I got English.
So I can assume the reason the alien at 3:07 popped up conveniently behind the squad right before the first assault of enemies is because they must've put up aleast somewhat of a fight in a previous restart.
Imagine if this movie got its original rating of R Instead of the aliens tossing people around in a very family friendly fashion, we could've seen what all those blades and razor sharp tendrils could actually do a human. Would've made the aliens more terrifying and the movie more intense.
And for when the Mimic emerges from the sand and kills J Squad, imagine if the R-rated version had the Mimic impaling Farrell through the chest before he says "Hot damn" before being tossed off. Then other deaths during battle sequences would've included decapitations, bisections, impalings and a TON more gore and blood. Especially that acidic blood death scene, though... X(
i just realized that this fight already happened multiple times for the machines. 0:33 probably did major dmg to the machines from that shot so the reseter shot him down hence the accuracy to hit him spot on. the same way for Rita, machines saw how much of a threat she was and they shot her down spot on even with no clear line of sight of her. all the missiles are heading the same direction in the background but the ones that hit her came from a different direction, machines knew she was gonna be there. then on minute 3:10 the machine knew where to show up because they were already getting set up to fight the wave coming so they were a threat, reseter machine sent the first machine there and killed off everyone who was fighting, probably still died a few times in there BUT, tom cruise never shot until the end so he was never part of the previous fights because he wasnt a threat. Resetter came up thinking the enemy was down and thats how he died against tom cruise, this was a new life the reseter didnt knew tom cruise defeated the other machine beacuse he never shot until the end.
Something of note, this is cowardly, first time through Tom Cruise with absolutely zero combat experience or skill Still, when he realizes he has no way out he just and grabs that claymore and goes out like a man. It shows that he always had that badass in him he just was never in a position where he needed to be that guy.
Man, those big, beefy exoskeletons that they wear which enhance strength blah blah blah are completely useless aside from carrying an armament that the average troops barely gets to shoot. xD
Matt B mostly because none of them have any more than basic training on them. You can see how good the suits really are when Tom Cruise and the female go ham with them later on in the movie

+NumBskullZ They probably did (hence why half the Mimics are hiding) and it's not like it it mattered they could just reset the day most likely the aliens lived the battle hundreds of times before Tom Cruise even got his shot.
HawaiianZach This is true, what I meant although not exactly stated how I should have stated is the physical enhancements are pointless against creatures that fling them like rag dolls. Mostly speaking of the suits overly bulky design. XD Your point is very true though, they could have nearly lost many times, they just adjust their strategy a bit, definitely OP. XD If I could reset time I would be world leader right now.

That’s exactly what I was thinking when the fucker came out.
Also, clearly rita was taken out early, because they had already fought this battle several times, and they knew she was a threat.
Non-time traveler only spends 10-15 minutes on that beach, while the Blue Mimics might've spent a week or even months on that same beach.

those suits that they are wearing are just terrible. No armor and they can barely run
@@RadekCrazy1oh I didn’t even realise that
It's even greater because due to how their power works, THEIR OWN ACTIONS led to their defeat:
1st human counterattack, probably almost successful until they kill an Alpha, then the day is reset, and it keeps getting reset, with the humans losing a lottle more progress every time until they're back at the beach, but, Cage's character was always a part of the invasion, however, as the timeline of the invasion keeps changing due to the mimics, he either survives past the beach or, due to the way the fight is going in response to the changes caused by the mimics, he moves to a location he never was in the first place: the foxhole where he kills the Alpha.

@@gibz5467 they said the same caliber, not the same weapon
I always wondered how many times they invaded. The first time they did they probably won a lot of land until they killed an Alpha, since the aliens did not know about the invasion. They were unprepared and the humans probably landed unopposed. So following the movie's logic, Cage died a lot of times before in previous invasions, in different places and by different means, until in this cycle, he got an Alpha and stealed its power by luck.
The anticipation and reveal of the first mimic was so well done. One of the best aliens done on film

If the aliens are using time powers to reset the battle every time until they get a favorable ending, perhaps the reason MC survived for so long was because his safety was on and so the aliens never designated him as a threat and never targeted him.
thats actually a really good idea that explains why he was even able to break the cycle in the first place, instead of just a fuck up from the aliens.

Something special about the film. Can watch it a million times & again. The last scene is ethereal.
"You're going to miss your moment!"
Oddly prophetic.

I love the aliens they made for this movie, they're fantastic.
Also, after years of not really thinking about it:
Finally realised the reason for them putting themselves in danger - the aliens I mean.
They never attacked, they were _hiding beneath the sand all the time_ because they _knew the humans were coming._
They wanted to set up an ambush, and it's quite a good ambush to be honest. The aliens aren't immortal, they can just kill a metric ton of humans before dying.
So this was probably their most efficient way of stymying an invasion in its tracks at the same time as inflicting severe losses to combat operative enemies without being on the offensive.
They tell you that in the movie with blatant exposition.

Edit: those aliens be acting like my dog when my father gets home from work.
it wasn't a dream........
@@thepaintingbanjo8894 Exactly. He lived that moment and died, before Groundhog Day kicked in
What? What is this comment??
I just realized that at 1:52, I think her gaze was like that because she hasn't seen him before.
I remember watching this on a whim. I didn't even read the description. That was a great decision.
I once bought a handheld voice recorder direct from Japan because no one else sold it, it was exactly like this. No online help, no TH-cam videos

The best manga/novel adaptation out there.
Alongside Alita: Battle Angel.
After watching tomorrow war I never realized how much I love edge of tomorrow
One of the best & most exhaustive time-travel flicks like ever...
Someone never grew out of their "but it turned out to be all a dream" phase
4:02 try to anime this monster in 3D is a nightmare
So I can assume the reason the alien at 3:07 popped up conveniently behind the squad right before the first assault of enemies is because they must've put up aleast somewhat of a fight in a previous restart.
Probably the only one about them that can reset time is the blue one, but he seems to be in command so yeah

Imagine if this movie got its original rating of R
Instead of the aliens tossing people around in a very family friendly fashion, we could've seen what all those blades and razor sharp tendrils could actually do a human.
Prolly the closest we’ll ever get to a futuristic Normandy beach scene

When Pvt. Hudson himself leads you into an alien battle, you know you're in for a good time haha!
Something of note, this is cowardly, first time through Tom Cruise with absolutely zero combat experience or skill Still, when he realizes he has no way out he just and grabs that claymore and goes out like a man. It shows that he always had that badass in him he just was never in a position where he needed to be that guy.
Bloke ate it like a tank and only died because the blood dissolved his face
My favourite film of the 2010s. Absolutely ingenious in every way.
Fun fact for those that don't know, Edge of Tommorow is based on the Japanese Light Novel All You Need Is Kill.
Man, those big, beefy exoskeletons that they wear which enhance strength blah blah blah are completely useless aside from carrying an armament that the average troops barely gets to shoot. xD
Matt B mostly because none of them have any more than basic training on them. You can see how good the suits really are when Tom Cruise and the female go ham with them later on in the movie
gillecroisd 92 yeah they could have avoided the slaughter by using drones bombing runs artillery strikes ballistic missiles before hand to help kill more innit?
+NumBskullZ They probably did (hence why half the Mimics are hiding) and it's not like it it mattered they could just reset the day most likely the aliens lived the battle hundreds of times before Tom Cruise even got his shot.
time reset is op man, nothing they couldve done
HawaiianZach This is true, what I meant although not exactly stated how I should have stated is the physical enhancements are pointless against creatures that fling them like rag dolls. Mostly speaking of the suits overly bulky design. XD
Your point is very true though, they could have nearly lost many times, they just adjust their strategy a bit, definitely OP. XD If I could reset time I would be world leader right now.
This feels reminiscent of my first game of League of Legends.
Outstanding film !!! The real crime here is, not making a part 2 for this.
i am definitely rewatching this tonight
She just stood there
MENACINGLY!!!!
The suits in the Manga Comics were more like Master Cheif or the Nanosuit.
Yep
Me and the boys: Where M6 MAGNUM?!
Best movie ever! even if you think sci-fi is cheesy this is an awesome action battle movie with great acting.
0:27 "KONICHIWA!!!"
I'll never forget how memorized this movie had me, I really came to understand how terrifying combat can be when your enemy lures you into a trap and your forces just get positively routed. What a terrifying thing to behold
"Okay Tom, just act completely clueless and forget basic functions"
