It unfortunately happens a lot. There was a really great news article some years ago that focused on the illegitimate children born in the Philippines from sexpats who refused to use contraceptive and were shocked they fathered a child. The poor kids had no identity and many of the daughters were doomed to repeat the cycle of their mothers because their mom was already poor before having kids, and was economically worse off after the unplanned child.
