I love this Album, Although the "Least Favorite" by Fans, there are still songs that really speaks from the heart, Like "To be Human", "Handmade Heaven" and "End of the Earth"
The thing about this album it is made total sense for it to come out when it did. It followed along from three very heavy concept albums, and it felt like Marina almost detoxing her soul before starting back up with high concept again. This is actually my most listened to Marina album because it came out when I began university, and the themes of nature, philosophy and fear really helped ground me at a time of anxiety. It’s a transitional album, more mature, less intense, but really beautifully written. Also I have a theory that if Marina had gone for a more colourful, nature inspired cover, it would have actually have done better to draw in listeners who may have been turned off by the minimalistic aesthetic. As it stands it’s a cool, calm, easy to enjoy album with some really beautiful tracks, it feels authentic at a time when it needed to be.
I think in a way the chaos in the tracks manage to bring together the concepts. The first half has the under current of love, even in the darker songs. “To be Human” and “End of the earth” are explicitly about love, she loves being human yet she struggles to particularly define it. She loves whoever she’s discussing even in the face of mortality. The second half has the undercurrent of fear and breaking from it, like in “believe in love” where she’s actively trying to placate her feelings of doubt and fear. I honestly think she should’ve cut the feature and a few others like superstar but overall, if you search for it, the concept works really well.
marina said in interviews & stuff that the album is split into two parts “love” & “fear” with love being from track 1- track 10 and fear being track 11- the end. With too afraid she said on tik tok i think?? that she used to have panic attacks everyday when she was with one of her partners and once they broke up she stopped having them which could be what too afraid touched on :)
This album isn’t her best but there are some really amazing songs on it. My top tracks on this album: •End of the Earth •Soft to be Strong •Handmade Heaven •Karma •Emotional Machine •Superstar •To Be Human •Too Afraid
In an interview she confessed that Enjoy Your Life was a cover-up for how she was actually feeling in the moment. I can't remember who the interview was with but she basically said the entire lyrical content of that and even maybe Orange Trees were intentionally bright and happy to make up for lack of her own happiness when she was writing them.
Its one of my favorites, I mean how can anybody dislike Superstar, True, To Be Human or Karma. Emotianl Machine and Life is Strange. A lot of people dislike this piece of art but I think its rather perfect
The album has some good songs, some really good songs even, but it also has a lot of Marina's weakest tracks and lyrics. And then on top of that there's not much going on production wise.
This album reminds me of Britney Spears Glory album - it's definitely my least favourite album in Marina's discography but I still appreciate the lyrics and the standout songs that are most certainly more "Marina"

Just so unlike anything from her before. I would love to talk to her at length about her thoughts on this album and how she views it in hindsight. I love her and I do enjoy the album but certainly the least of her whole discography. Even Ancient Dreams feels like a return to form for her lyrically/sonically so L+F is just this random blip of faux - almost overpowering - happiness and crisp yet uninspired production... It's really interesting hahahah

My theory is that marina was pressured to take out an album since froot was her last album and then after she took a break after Ever since Electra Heart she had problems with her label Someone correct me if I’m wrong but ANCIENT DREAMS IN A MORED LAND WAS HER LAST ALBUM WITH HER LABEL SINCE NOW IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED SHE HAS CUT ANY WORK WITH THEM NOW HER BEING INDEPENDENT BUT IDK. THIS IS JUST MY THEROY IM TRYING TO MAKE SINCE CAUSE THERE IS A LOT WIERD THINGS WITH THIS ALBUM 😂
Entertaining reaction! I love loads of songs on this album but it's a stylistic mess and definitely about 4 albums spliced together - I think genuinely (based on interviews and such) she was feeling really done with her career prior to L+F and here she was just flinging all the things at the wall and playing about. It lacks a core, or a heart as an album. The tour was a blast however - she was in great form touring all the happy nonsense songs (looking at you, Orange Trees) and I think this phase helped her reset and return with the much superior (imo at least) Ancient Dreams.
You could say there are a few misses in there, but i still love this album and i dont like all the negativity sorounding it. Like the prasing of some fan 'reviews' really devalue the music, even of you dont think its the best, it is still some lovely tunes, with some nice messages, even though it might not have hit as hard as the prior ones :(
For the songs: Dont like Baby at all even though the melody is catchy. Orange Tree and Superstar feel boring to me. But the rest is uphill in my opinion even though its more 'generic' pop and less marina quirky. With the messages of a lot of these i still feel she comes through To be human is beautiful even though i can not listen to it everyday. Enjoy your life and Karma would be my fave choices. The accoustic of karma is very nice imo.
Actually forgot about emotional machine as a song on this album even though its a bop and the end of it and the layering of everything is also just superb. In general i prefer the fear side of the album a lot more. Doesnt mean the love side is bad, but imo fear is the stronger one ^^
The title-😭if you feel unsure about this album it’s understandable the album has some great songs.But it’s not usually Marina’s style of work And I think that even marina doesn’t like this album herself 😂😭 she didn’t really do a lot of promotion for it
i honestly thought love + fear was kinda meh when it came out. which is funny bc it contains one of my favorite marina songs of all time (end of the earth)
imo this album is really good and has some bops but her other albums are very strong so this is my least favourite, i love end of the earth and too afraid sm!

The reason the production sounds like Clean Bandit is cause her ex who's in Clean Bandit co produced it. (Unless I've misunderstood it)

I actually enjoy this album a lot more than Froot.
There are a few gems on this album, but the lyricism is mostly soooo bad. The topics feel very general and have little impact.
