Man I owe you a big one !!! I did something wrong and the DS stop working, and watching videos I came to your video and that was the solution!! Thank you so much !!
I recently resigned from my previous employer and I've been spending the past few months repairing all Nintendo dual screen consoles. I have not purchased one DS console that was working, and I now have around 50 working units. I plan on setting up a store in the near future for some supplemental income. I only have one original DS. I prefer to work on the DS Lite, but I have worked on every DS, except for the New 3DS. I have worked on the New 3DS XL, but I managed to break a flex cable connector and will have to swap the motherboard. I have successfully fixed everything else. The most common problem is a dead battery. There are two types of dead battery. Type one is when a working console will flash the light on and off when you plug in a charging cable. This battery is really dead. Type two will read 0 volts on a multimeter but the battery is still okay. This covers most dead batteries. Most broken units you find on eBay have either a battery that must be replaced or a battery that simply has to be charged before using. The second most common problem is a broken hinge. By far this mostly occurs on the DS Lite. If caught quickly, you can replace the shell for around $5. If not caught quickly, the broken hinge will destroy the upper display module, too. The third most common problem is a destroyed upper display module. This is almost always caused by a broken hinge. Replacing the upper display module is a breeze on the DS Lite compared to the 3DS, where it is extremely difficult and error prone. Except for the 2DS, the upper display module is only $5-10. The fourth most common problem is liquid damage. Sometimes liquid will destroy the motherboard, but you'd be surprised at what I've been able to simply clean off with alcohol. It's good to have a few spare motherboards for verification purposes. The fifth most common problem is a broken charge port. The original DS and DS Lite never have a broken charge port. This only occurs on the DSi and newer. Fortunately, swapping charge ports from a liquid damaged motherboard always works. The sixth most common problem is a blown fuse. Always check continuity on both fuses. If you're lazy you can use a solder blob, but I like to take a fuse off a motherboard with liquid damage. The seventh most common problem is a broken flex connector. They can be a bit of a pain to replace, because they're easy to melt. It's helpful to have a stack of dead motherboards. The eighth most common problem is a bad digitizer. There is a way to do a calibration of the digitizer but it never works. If the digitizer is off, it's off. Fortunately, this is a cheap repair. Digitizers only cost a few bucks and less than $2 on the DS Lite. Ninth is a bad lower screen. Kind of rare, but I've seen a few bad ones. Except for the 2DS, lower screens are only about $5-10. Lastly, the Wi Fi module occasionally goes bad. If the light stays on continuously but nothing happens then it's just a bad Wi Fi module. Always have spares from liquid damaged motherboards. The 2DS is a special case. The screens are one module, and if the screen module is cracked, you have to pay $30 for a new one. Fixing the 2DS doesn't make much economic sense, unless and until they can bring down the price of the screen module.
I’ve recently started buying broken dual screens off eBay and I’ve been pretty successful with fixing them. I got my first water damaged DS recently, a red DSi. When I put it on the charger the light stays on. I cleaned the motherboard with 90% alcohol. I replaced the power board, the one the battery goes on, but it still won’t turn on. It’s probably not fixable but I’d like to know if you have any advice to give me if it’s still possible to fix.
The problem with water damage is that the fault could be anywhere. If you are lucky it's visible corrosion or burnt track etc, but often is a damaged IC or component. If you have tried all the usual things like cleaning with IPA and visual inspection I'd try finding out if there are any fuses.
backofficeshow I tested both fuses with a multimeter and they both made it beep. So I guess that means they’re good. I guess I should more closely inspect the motherboard. Not sure what I’m looking for though.
my ds has the same problem, I thought it was the battery and went ahead bought another one on ebay, installed it and nothing! But thanks to you now I know. Others can learn from you in the sense of posting more videos about the original ds instead of just the dsi and ds lite. Don't care what others say, this baby came first.
It's refreshing to see this repair done with a soldering iron instead of blowing hot air on the entire board for one little tiny fuse. On another note, little tiny fuses are cheap. Order some little tiny fuses, and replace it with a new little tiny fuse instead of a jumper wire. Fuses are there for a reason.
@@Tonythenotobese a hot air gun is a waste of time if you have a high quality soldering iron. Why blow hot air all over the board when you can touch the fuse for 5 seconds with a soldering iron and be done with it?
Wow thats a slot2 supercard? old stuff there. Those drawn a lot of power, you might be better buyin a new supercard (slot1 only) or a m3 if those are still manufactured.
they are really convenient, i do have some too. Spent a lot of time on the homebrew community for DS and DSlite. That was passkey right?, god It's been a long time since I saw one of those.
Might be ok to use after the battery has been on charge for 30mins or so. I'd probably order a cheap replacement battery as it might be dropping or spiking under load (possibly what might have done the fuse in originally).
Yeah it should be ok after some time charging. The slot 2 flashcards and addons draw more power than usual, the rumble pack could even suck up all the battery life in a second on some specific circumstances. I would try to replace the fuse though, to prevent that from happening again.
A fuse is best. If you are desperate use the thinnest wire you can find, maybe even a strand of steel wool might be good. But remember, anything other than a fuse could harm something or someone!
Hi, I just bought a PT DIGITAL MULTI-TESTER at a auto parts store for $19.00 dlls, is this good enough to test the fuses on my ds? We no longer have a radio shack. 😞
my nds cant power up, when i press the power button the green light keeps on, besides this it has nothing response and when i press the power button again(not hold just press) the light soon goes off
I really wish I could have seen the smd. fuse,do you have a number for it so I can look it up,this is the first smd fuse I almost saw,the video was cool.
+Ron Thompson Hi Ron, I think I linked to them in the description, I'm pretty confident I couldn't read a number from the smd without setting up my microscope.
The Backoffice Wow, free lol, I have Vegas but it seems complicated so I never really used it, also why would someone dislike the video, it seems fine to me!
+ELECTROHAXZ always a few 😀 Vegas is worth learning, it's the best I have tried and know many TH-camrs using it. They have the odd deal on Steam time to time as well. Windows movie maker was ok for basic stuff
The Backoffice Yea, I guess it's with learning since I have it but there are tons of buttons and things that seems like a lot to remember. I'll try it though
backoffice I have a question, my sisters ds got washed in a washing machine and i got it all dry but when i charge it, it charges for like 5 seconds then the light goes out, and when i turn it on, it does the same thing, it turns on for like 5 seconds, then turns off. please help if you know what the issue is please :)
The left side of my F2 pin is not showing power while the right side does when using a volt meter and connected to battery charge pins. Advice? May just need a new motherboard ):
Still sounds like the typical fuse / battery issue 🤔 Maybe it's possible to jump into the power rail from a bench PSU. I've not had to try, but it should rule out issues with any of the charging circuitry and battery

Ok for anything that seems a bit strange looking, also check where the battery connects to see if you can measure any voltage.
Weirdly this video helped me repair a broken drum machine with exactly the same fuse!
You must have set your drum machine volume all the way to 11!

Glad to be of help
So much Backoffice in so little time.. which do I watch first?!
+Cal Barnes If you have specific genres in mind I can try to make some playlists, to help.
For example, consoles or cpus/gpus/pc-related. It's the only thing I'm interested after all, XD
Wow, a compact flash card, I haven't seen one of those in nearly 7 years.

Nice fix, didn't know you could sub wire in a pinch. Wish I could get a transparent 3DS case but they seem non existent
+Ganjulationess3DS yeah fuses are just particular gauges of wire in most cases. In the olden days we used wire instead of glass fuses 😁
Thank you man this helped a lot
You should check the F1 as well just in case
I have a motherboard with exactly the same problem, I thought it was the f2 fuse too but this pretty much confirmed my suspicion
is the nds fuse compatible with the gba sp one or the ds lite, bcuz for the life of me i cannot find the original ds's fuse anywhere else
you are genius man

+Almamu I have one, takes a micro SD. This one is more of a curio. I also have the kind that needed it's own parallel port programmer 😀

"you can see this hinge is somewhat damaged"
*wiggles and you can see the ribbon cable*
I know this was posted years ago but what wire did you use to make the fuse
I really cannot recall, but if you want to take a risk you could use a single strand of the smallest wire you could find, like transformer coil wire
Ha, I'm in a similar situation but then saw this was posted 4 years ago
Great video but people probably should buy a new fuse to connect to it.
What type of wire is that?
I was thinking to do this exact thing your doing I don’t really want to buy the fuses 😂
What kind of wire did you use or should I go with a fuse instead?
A fuse is best. If you are desperate use the thinnest wire you can find, maybe even a strand of steel wool might be good. But remember, anything other than a fuse could harm something or someone!
backofficeshow. Thanks again.
I put my battery in backwards during testing on my macro xl build. Will this help at all?
Absolutely should be the first thing to check
Yeah I’m just wondering if there is a fuse right below the battery terminal on the DS lite could you bridge it the same way
Hey, would you know if this kind of fuse would work in a new 3ds xl?
Hi, I just bought a PT DIGITAL MULTI-TESTER at a auto parts store for $19.00 dlls, is this good enough to test the fuses on my ds? We no longer have a radio shack. 😞
Should be fine
backofficeshow. Ok and on what setting?...please!
Continuity or resistance will do. A fuse will have a resistance of zero
Did you just use solider to bridge across. How many amps would it take to break it?
Dozens
@@backofficeshow in that case I guess if there's a fault my ds will get fried?
Probably, unless you can deconstruct a fine braid or transformer wire and use a strand of that.
I got one of those first edition DL Lite's. I used to love it but I've replaced with with a Vita.
+m22rdy I seem only to really have Nintendo handhelds, I Skipped the smaller dses and dsis
my nds cant power up, when i press the power button the green light keeps on, besides this it has nothing response and when i press the power button again(not hold just press) the light soon goes off
perfect video
Hello, I made this solution and it worked, but I just use solder not a wire. Can you tell me what fuse should I got to replace?
If you run Google three are people selling the fuses as a kit. Look for "F1 & F2 Fuse For Nintendo Ds Dsi Xl Lite Dsl Replacement"
Would you know how to fix a ds lite, I bought it in the states and plugged it in Norway and I think the fuse blew, I’m no sure ;(
If you are lucky you may have only blew the AC adaptor. I would first try a new one
I didn't like the original DS design, too snap-flap-happy. Were you able to get a DS Lite in the end?
+Simon Lock (Aergan) Nope, not found one cheap enough yet, but still looking! 😂
If you put the battery in the wrong way and try to power the console you instantly break the fuse. I did this with a DS classic and dsi in a row xD
will these fuses also work with the 3ds xl? my console will only power on if its plugged into the wall
I'm sure they use the same or similar inside 👍
I really wish I could have seen the smd. fuse,do you have a number for it so I can look it up,this is the first smd fuse I almost saw,the video was cool.
+Ron Thompson Hi Ron, I think I linked to them in the description, I'm pretty confident I couldn't read a number from the smd without setting up my microscope.
+Ron Thompson The fuse at 7 minutes, F2, is rated at 1 amp in an 0603 footprint
What editor do you use?
+ELECTROHAXZ Vegas, can't remember which version came free with a camera 😂

+ELECTROHAXZ the free versions hid a lot of the buttons to get people used to it. There might be a basic mode option in there somewhere
todo video thnks
So when I did the fuse test I got 1.0 to 5.0 and then it went to zero so would my fuse be fine and the battery is dead
That could be the case and cheap enough to test with a new battery
backoffice I have a question, my sisters ds got washed in a washing machine and i got it all dry but when i charge it, it charges for like 5 seconds then the light goes out, and when i turn it on, it does the same thing, it turns on for like 5 seconds, then turns off. please help if you know what the issue is please :)
also i completely dried as in took it apart and put it back together.
+Commander Sparkles check fuses F1 and F2 in the same way I did in the video. One fuse is on the top of the PCB and the other underneath.
Let's just say that someone doesn't have the equipment or skill to replace a fuse. Do you have to replace the motherboard?
Yes
The left side of my F2 pin is not showing power while the right side does when using a volt meter and connected to battery charge pins. Advice? May just need a new motherboard ):
Replace f2
I replace the screens and shell, try to turn it on and..nothing, I think this is it
Damn....im not that handy with electronics and I think this is why my DS isn't turning on...
What the impact for DS if fuse unpluging?
It will not charge
Its mean your DS in video can't be charge?
Yes, it couldn't charged until I repaired it
i stripped the f1 fuse pads
can anyone help me?
I replaced this fuse but its still not coming on for me. Is there an other fuse like in the ds lite?
I think there are two fuses. What condition is the battery in?
@@backofficeshow the battery works well. I cant find the other fuse ;/
I do not have my PC on there too confirm if there is a second one. Does the led do anything when you apply the power adaptor?
Yes the orange light comes on as normal when I power on it goes green for 1 second with a white bottom screen and then gones black

It's an interesting failure mode, I'm not really sure why it occurs in an otherwise healthy unit though
