Hi all, we have an issue with our mic in the last section of this video. Only those listening with ear phones will spot the sound is only in the left channel. Sorry about that, tried for ages last night to fix it but couldn't figure it out. Rode wireless Go2 connected to GoPro 10 through the media mod issue. Well Adrian I was having the same trouble and done the same but no joy. I taught like you radiator was clean until I jet washed it out and that solved the problem.

Hi Adrian, careful running a return through the fill cap. It aerates the oil and makes it ‘foamy’. This can shorten the life of your oil and the hydraulic pump on the tractor. A return line should ideally enter below the oil level to avoid this. I had a similar problem with a timber crane on an old international and took the time to plumb in a drain into the bottom of the axle. The cap is fine for short spells like a log splitter but if your using 6 longer term like a timber crane or a hedge cutter particularly at raised revs it’s worth plumbing properly.
Yes I think your right Tim, I ordered the proper 3/4 steel tank return pipe from Massey on Monday so it will be plumbed the right way soon. Gonna fix all the messy pipe work to factory spec as well 👍

Interesting video Adrian, nice to see Hudson and Bailey out keeping eyes on you 😀 thinking one way to check air flow through front tractor grill, Revs up about 1600 and have some dry grass, see if tractor will vacuum it to the plastic cover from your hand or by throwing it up in front, obviously grass should stick to the cover, as for rain we’re having a lot here in uk. Would be a good video of you, Farmer P, Tom and Ginger, Funky Farmer and definitely not forgetting Farmer Phil and dad! 🤪🍻

Had a similar problem when using the hedge cutter and we had great success in curing it just by making a simple patch pipe and simply use one spoil valve on the tractor as a pressure relief simply by connecting a patch pipe into the out and in on the spoil valve and put the spoil valve to pump and away you go , cheap simple cure, well it worked for us 👍👍

Cracking video Adrian, I have a Renault thats getting warm in the back end only with the hedge trimmer no problem with the post knocker or the digger and cannot find out what's causing it, have changed the flow and return pipes so will see how that goes tomorrow, thought I had a problem with my earphones even changed earphones😄

Hi Adrian, great video as usual. The oil heating problem sounds like you have closed centre hydraulics on the tractor and open centre valve block. I had same problem with a John Deere 3040 one time. The oil would cook in no time.

I do a bit of trimming under the wires in mid summer to save leaving it all to the back end if it gets wet 👌🏻
We did our fast return like that but used a bigger fitting for return we used a flat face fitting a inch one and never had any problems and boom was way smoother and bit quicker

You should try n high flow coupler, those pin couplers have alot of restriction the small high flow coupler has more flow capabilities than a 3/4 inch pin coupler. We have changed all our returns to the high flow, they are expensive but make a big difference. Keep in the good work loving the content
Adrian I think to get around the oil heating problem you would need to make the spool on the hedge cutter closed centre and run it off the load sensing ports, most older tractors from the hedge cutters era would be open centre.

I have a pa590 on a John deere tractor with closed centre hydraulics same as your massey. McConnell do a kit for the chest to convert from open to closed centre. Closed centre hydraulics do not like free flow, and also returning the oil at any kind of a rate straight into the filer will starve the front of the transmission of oil and you will get overheated packs.
Always find trimming and milking works well milking keeps the neck from aching. Plus it’s a good chance to have a day on the 3095 Massey we’ve got!

A little tip that might help is with your new 3/4” male and female coupling take the insides out of them so the oil runs straight through. We had to do it for the one pass drill.

Well Adrian, l used to operate a hedge cutter for nearly 3 years, A mc connoll 5455 , Lovely to work motion control, but any hedge cutter will heat up the back end of a tractor because of the weight l think, some newer hedge cutters have a fan to cool the oil , hope u get the problem solved, chat soon 👍, kieran from Laghey donegal town.
There is always something when your Farming never a dull moment, Lots of Mr angry moments but never dull, if you really want to fix the hedger fault take it and should it to a hydraulic company another oil cooler seldom cures the fault might help a little but will not cure it, hydraulic guys will know what to do some one who sorts cranes that type of company, a tandem pump is a sound fix and don't use the tractor pump but that might no work for you as the drive shaft connector would need to be able to with stand the extra torque on it, not an easy one if you don't have much hedge cutting to do, great video as usual Adrian looking forward to seeing the bungalow, good luck

Hi Adrian i had that problem with my McConnell pa 50 years ago. Like yourself I improved the oil return and still not much better. So anyway the problem was with all the heat it built up it caused a internal crack in the hedge cutter valve chest. Couldn't see anything wrong with it but took a chance and fitted a new one , kept the oil flow turned down low and it's been fine ever since.

Adrian do you use anything to protect rims and mudguards, after I repainted my 3680 I ceramic coated left rim and mudguard before he’s cutting season and they still look brand new 4 years on

In Ireland, relatively low cover of native woodland makes hedgerows exceptionally important for biodiversity.
Hedgerows provide botanical diversity as well as food and shelter for animals, most notably birds.
They also act as corridors connecting habitats.
Untrimmed, thorny hedges are favoured by birds, but birds may nest in any hedge.

Adrain, I worked with Industrial Hydraulics for years. Heat is created when oil flows with a pressure drop across a restriction.
If there is high oil flow but no pressure, then no heat is created. Likewise, when there is high pressure and no flow, there is no heat created. Heat is created from a combination of the flow and pressure drop. Both are required.
In older tractors, the hydraulic pump is always running when the engine is on. All the spool valves are open center, meaning that the oil just flows tru them freely when not used.
In newer tractors with load sensing, the load sensing pump increases flow in response to a drop in pressure. it does this via a swash plate that changes angle allowing the pistons to pump more. These type of pumps require closed center hydraulic valves. Otherwise they are continously pumping. Something they should not do.
Heat is also generated if there is any leak from high pressure to low pressure internally, like internally in the pump. Can also happen if hydraulic motors like in your hedge cutter head, leak internally. An oil cooler will help your problem but it is better to find out why it is heating in the first place.
Would that suggest he would be better to restrict the return so the pump moves less oil?
@@danjones7529 Flow control on the return side will lead to back pressure in the line. Heat generated will be more or less the same. Better to slow down the pump flowrate.

@@IFarmWeFarm Did you download the PA93 Machine Manual from the McConnell website. On page 6 it mentions a conversion kit for John Deere tractors as they operate on Open Center principle.

What were you doing with the tractor windows before you started? Something to do with preventing vibration?
Pity the Massey is heating up. I dunno why they don’t put 3/4 return points in as standard. My 1988 mb trac has one as standard 🤷♂ plus a separate hydraulic tank and pump so if it doesn’t go pear shaped it’s not too bad. Hope you get it fixed 👍
hi try knocking the probe out and the centre for the return to tank so everything is straight through did this on destoner
If you plumb directly back to sump on a 3/4 inch or 1 inch free flow return coupling would that resolve it? I have seen large hyd drive vacuum pumps plumbed that way in the past.
Now you don't have a high return flow but if you did you need a longer pipe into the tank. The return oil must be filled below the oil level to avoid foam formation. Know from own experience when the tractor vomit over the rear axle
I like what u did . U went directly into the backend off tractor . I think Iff u only put the hedge cutter on a few times a year . Forget about the quick release fitting . Manual hook up . The oil will get back way faster
Adrian. The valve chest on the hedge cutter hardly has a load sense port? Could be plugged marked with an X on the side of the valve chest. That would let you use the load sense in the tractor to run the boom instead of using a spool in constant pumping. Running the return directly into the back end also means you are bypassing the return filter for the back end. Adding the additional oil cooler will def help make sure to add a small check valve in a T with a bypass pipe on the inlet of the cooler so cold oil isn’t being pumped through the cooler runs the risk of busting the cooler. Love the videos.

Thank you for the video. Fascinating! What is the purpose of the bonnet cover? Protect the paint when cutting hedges? My dad farms in a cold climate and I've never seen these used (but we don't have hedges).

A few things that stand out. Your bonnet cover is retaining heat, affecting cooling capacity.
Your previous tractor end return fitting is male which is against the flow of oil causing restriction.
Dumping the oil into the filler cap causes the oil to froth introducing air into the oil which will destroy your pump. It needs to return through the return line which enters below the level of oil stopping it from frothing.
You need to run tractor in 540e or 1000 to bring down the revs and pressure. I believe all of above are contributing to the issue along with your oil is burnt and needs changing preferably using 46 oil and not universal. After all that the closed circuit open circuit system is not ideal.

Best channel on TH-cam by far. We have an older PA35E electric control fully independent and believe me it's so much smoother and easier to operate. Could you purchase an electric manifold and fit it?

Hi Adrian I used to mow with a jx1100u and a Bamford mower, one time the backend of the tractor heated up this was traced back to a return valve that was sticking dont know if that is any help to you.
Not up on these modern tractors but i know on 600 and 3000 series etc you could get 'motor spool valves' to run motors and systems like the hedgecutter, we have always put oil returns back to rear end through filler points and non restricted fittings and never had any oil heating problems using spools open all the time
When you say non restricted fittings do you mean an open flow screw in joint? No coupler
Yep but I'm going even further back in time to the 100 200 500 series etc which have ports in the hydraulic top cover where you could take a bung out and screw in a fitting, told you I was old school, used to work for a Massey dealer in the 80's
Regarding the inability to keep the oil temp on show all the I'd say you'd be looking down the performance & modification route and have an independent gauge installed just for that purpose
Fit bigger cupplings to return line and shut oil flow on spool .our hedge cutter runs on only 12 percent of oil flow on electric spools on case maxxum 145 and oil runs cool .
Could be the cover protecting the bonnet is restricting the air to the cooler up front . Worth a check I think
I really don’t think so but I will try it for a day without it on to see, be a very simple fix if it is

My previous comment was deleted for some reason but look at page 11 of the PA 93 operators manual, it tells you how to work the PA 93 with the closed center hydraulics conversion kit. I run my semi independent cutter in 1000 speed shaft on open center hydraulics and dont let the pto revs exceed 400 rpm as stated in the manual, saves diesel and cuts down the amount of oil pumped around by the tractor to operate the arm and head, being doing it like this for years and tractor can still climb hills like the side of a mountain.
It might of went into the spam folder, sometimes certain works can set that off. I have that manual but didn’t spot that one. I will look now when I get home. Ya I will try it on 1000 pto next time to see how it works as that does make sense, thanks for the tip lad appreciate it greatly
There should be a Allen key bung in the chest valve on the hedge cutter if so take screw it out and see if there’s a wee restrictor in there(mine was already out) but take it out if it’s still in it seemed to cure that problem for me

We had problems with oil flow on a Wrapper. We removed the quick release valve and plumbed the pipe into the fill port like you did. Problem solved.
Adrian, great content. We never heard the results from your friend with the flow meter. Was he able to determine if you flow control is working? I think the key to solving this problem is making sure you have just enough oil flowing through that valve and not having full flow which certainly would create restriction through that half inch port. Benjamin Coombes is correct about changing to the load-sensing circuit also.
Sorry yes it was at 60 LPM so I wasn’t to fare off guessing it, set it at 50 cold and let it heat up , it settled at 54 hot. Ya got loads of great info on what might solve this problem, only issue is everyone has different ideas so it’s hard to know what to do first
@@IFarmWeFarm True for sure, I'm from a dairy farm in cork with all Masseys! For 20 years in the US now working on crushers and screens using both open and closed circuit hydraulic systems. Many opinions out there but mines the only one that's correct.....that's what I tell the wife anyway!

Hi Adrian. Our PA35 is totally independent and doesn't use any of the tractors oil supply . Probably not your first choice but maybe you could swap yours for a different model.
Great video. I have used Massey tractors on forage wagons which need a good supply of oil with no problem, on my tractor’s the rear end dipstick says max for everyday work and extra max for the forage wagons that are circulating oil all the time . Because a large volume of your oil is in the tractor check tractor manual. I would also check with McConnell about using the machine with a tractor with closed circuit hydraulics , adjustments have to made on the forage wagons for this , the hedge cutter could be the same.

Hi Adrian. Just wondering about your hydraulic problem. Your tractor has a load sense system and your hedge cutter doesn't. I heard of a kit you can put on to over ride that problem, as your hydraulic system is in maximum flow the whole time, when it should be idle flow until a stool is engaged. Best chatting to the Massey dealer or hydraulic shop about that, as I'm only thinking out loud.
Just an idea
Is your valve block on you hege cutter an LS type and
If the pump is LS controled
And it doesn't get the right LS signal it could be causing your pump to stay in a higher flow
And that were the case by trying to restrict the flow by the flow control valve could be causing the excess oil to be blown of through a pump relief vale at a high pressure
Causing the oil to over heat
A pressure clock before the flow control valve
And another one after the quick fit on the pressure pipe would show if there is a differential pressure
Did you do the most basic check which is to see if there is enough oil in the back end of the tractor if it's low then it's going to warm up the oil that is in there.

If you plan on keeping the cutter long term I'd looking into adding a 2nd pump to the cutter, better job to not use the tractor pump at all.
Can that be done 🤔, it would be ideal if it could.
@@IFarmWeFarm it could but you would have to replace the cutter main pump for a tandem pump plus some pipe work, we had pa93's that were semi independent (the one you have) and total independent (2 pumps, one for cutting head and one for lift), having two pumps is a great job especially with the cost of pumps for modern tractors.

Most new ones are fully independent hydraulics saves this issue
An oil cooler with a temperature gauge visible from the cab would give good peace of mind.
Ideally you want to swap the fittings and leave the male on the tractor and female on the hedger. Then when you plug the hedger out the male on the tractor won’t fill with crap like the female otherwise would. Doesn’t matter the fittings are the wrong way as only you will use the hedger.

I have a pa93 very similar with fully independent hydraulic run from the hedge cutter can run 14 hour days no problem running a 1.2m head its a 2006 machine. It has an extra port that distributes the oil from the bigger pipes that run the head and sends ot to your valve chest on the hedge cutter. It looks a simple fix if you have the right part. I'll send you a photo via email tomorrow.

Try the load sensing port, that is what the faushion baler runs off of, the tractor only sends the oil when it's needed! It just might work.

You'll have to run the oil through a bolt on radiator matrix with electric fan, Simples!
The overheating could be the cover over the engine no air get in to cool the temperature in engine some people just get one side of the engine cover to let Air in
Just a few things I have learnt over the years hopefully it will help. Your pump in the tractor can pump a variable rate of oil but unfortunately not unless you use a load sensing spool block on the cutter. In its current set up at the moment as soon as you pull the spool the pump goes full flow and the restrictors on the tractor do more harm than good. They are only meant to slow the flow down to operate delicate hydraulics like a fertilizer sower opening ever now and again not to have a continuous flow through them. If you want to keep the cutter and save you tractor your only options are too fit a closed center load sensing spool block till the cutter or buy a set of tandem pumps from Whitehouse hydraulic products and plumb them up. It will probably cost around €700 or €800 for either option but money we'll spent if it saves the tractor and I think you could get either one plumbed up and sorted ok. Fitting an oil cooler on the cutter won't work unless your planning till run the tractors oil through it instead of the cutters. Abit of a long comment but hope it helps.

That’s open centre chest valve of the trimmer can be converted to closed centre with a kit McConnell do. I got it yes but unfortunately I couldn’t get a check valve with load sensing. make sure you are using a good quality oil. hv46 would be a good one to help the temp town. id stick in a bigger valve to ease flow ,and did ya replace any pipes around the trimmer motors at any point, might be the wrong size. free flow the return back to the box without the push in and youll be amazed at the difference. but that oil is cooked and needs changing.i also tend to add additional oil . check oil level when the revelant devices are extended and working.no need for oil cooler
Yes that’s a very good point, oil is cooked for sure. Replacing it this week, I haven’t had to replace any pipes on it yet thankfully but I will check the size fittings now. So do you just leave the return inside the filler hole with no fittings?
@@IFarmWeFarm thats the idea no resistance at all on the return.thread the pipe to the gb piece. Make sure the pressure is set right to about 50lpm . Too much pressure will boil the oil. And check to see how much oil is left in the box when the systems are running.read up on the hv46 oil. Use castrol or similiar no cheepee. Them new yoke wont tolorate it
Dont put hv46 in the back of that tractor ull destroy it use the correct grade oil that massey recommends.
They say, whoever they are, that it's best to let the hedge grow up for sequestration. Back to the neat and tidy look, I suppose it's what's comfortable for each landowner. Conversely it seems if you have any large trees/bushes near a road, you're hounded to cut them.

Do away with quick couplers on return pipe that you put on and screw in so just open pipe straight in, those fitting hold oil back. Cheep and worth a try, I know not as easy to fit on and off but if it works you could put much larger fittings on.

The lads I drove for yrs ago had 5 pa93's and ran them all like that. Welded a hydraulic fitting onto a fitting that matched the thread of the filler bung in the backend and just threaded the return hose straight into the backend with not quick coupler. Was the same with some of the rock breakers in the track machines it was messy getting blanker caps on the pipes when changing over but the hedgers were on for 6months at a time sometimes so not a big deal.
@@seanmchugh4283 I would be just worried about the oil getting mixed with air and causing it to foam up, with the tank return from the factory the oil is returned below the fill level to stop that happening. But lots of people have mentioned that same thing, it sounds like it would work only for that other issue
@@IFarmWeFarm was never an issue but it was all older machines even though they were all new at the time. Fendt 308lsa, (hydraulics weren't from the back end in them though), 110-90s, jd 6510's and a heap more over the yrs but all basic enough hydraulics compaired to the pressure and flow rates in the modern stuff. The bonnet cover could be hampering the cooling. Heard that with a fendt one time a lad put a number plate on the front grill of a 500series and it started over heating the oil. Took the plate off again and no bother after. There was a poor size oil cooler in them though.

There is a closed centre conversion valve for the PA93. Its was originally sold as a john deere valve for thw 50 series deeres from the same era. I had to fit one to mine when i bought it. That will solve your problem. Got mine from Delaney's of Ballaghmore. Drop me a note if you want more information

@@IFarmWeFarm I have read all the suggestions given to you in the comments and that suggestion might be possible but I seem to remember the John Deere valve that had to be fitted to wrappers. Log splitters and forage harvester’s 30 years ago. But I think that was to keep the pump in stroke because years ago the John Deere s only provided oil on demand. With my post driver on my 5713 I have 2 returns on the chest both coming to a free return and the other half of the spool providing the oil. The extra return came from a Allen screw blank on the post driver. If you want to check if you are restricting oil flow much bring up your live fuel usage on your dash. I discovered litres per hour is less with the extra return it even lowers it slightly if you pull the spool lever sending oil to the post driver travelling on the road.

@@claetuswoodroofe1854Oil supply on demand is literally the definition of closed centre hydraulics. The pump only provides oil when needed in a closed centre system so the valve kit essentially blanks off the block to stop the oil constantly circulating and heating up. Its part of the reason why the 40/50 series deeres were considered to have a weak hydraulic system. People didn't understand the difference and heated/burned out pumps as a result. A lot of tractors are now starting to come with closed centre systems so i think its highly likely this is the problem Adrian is having.
@@MrMythos110 The conversation kit is actually on the manual on page 12. With the conversation done what way have the feed and return plumbed? Are you use it the Load Sensing instead of the spool valve?

Ya it got very hot on the 6470 as well, it probably would work a lot better on our 5460 as she’s only pump around 60-80 LPM. But she wouldn’t have the same stability on hilly ground
Is there a good extraction with the cover? A very common mistake I see being made in motorsports is adding loads of vents to feed a cooler but not much extraction. I’d argue extraction is more important that inflow. You should see British touring cars, they draw all their cooling from a single letterbox sized inlet because they have excellent extraction.
It popped into my head when I first saw that cover that it had a decent area to draw in but may slow the flow out.
Blows out the front and in from the sides, seems like there’s good air movement there. I might try it without that cover to see what happens 👍
@@IFarmWeFarm suppose it’s handy to test if it’s a factor. I thought it was the other way round, could be that the exit flow isn’t getting to pass through that mesh fast enough because it’s so turbulent after the fan and coolers.
Adrian, can you go get one of the kids to run out and get the model and make of chainsaw you used when clearing cottage. I cut a lot around the farm and when watching you I realised I'm killing myself. That saw you have looks lovely, and perfect size and weight to the job you were doing. That’s my Stihl MS170 Reuben, savage wee saw. A lot of bite for little money and light weight for small work all day. Have a MS391 for the bigger stuff but it’s rarely use it. There is a MS180 which looks the same but I don’t like them quick chain tensioners that come on those. Highly recommend that wee saw 👍
@@IFarmWeFarm thanks Adrian, funny I was looking around and seen the 180/181 I said this must be it as it looks more like it. 170 you say, looks a lovely saw. My own one is 6kgs in weight, with a 19/20 inch bar. 4 hrs with mine versus yours, you see what I mean, a gym workout done in an hour with mine. I do be killed with it, I'm going to look in to purchasing.
As they say only as good as the teeth on the chain, keep them sharp.

Well Adrian u should take off the roller for doing the hedge is self u get a better finish
The roller is very handy for doing the ground work especially along the roadside I think
@@IFarmWeFarm yeah that is true I have mine off leave way better finish on actual hedge but take a while to get use to cutting grass with out the roller
Adrian, Ring Dessie in IFM he will give you the proper plug for the spools on trimmer , The oil should only be flowing when you pull the spool leaver it should nt be flowing constantly causing the oil to heat, same happened me with trimmer and wrapper the right plug sorted it and never a problem since
