I've driven a bus on the ocean. I've nearly been hit by a C-17 and a boat. So many wacky situations that I don't fully appreciate in the moment.

As an Englishman working the Alaska season as videographer in 2006 and for Princess Cruises, I fell in love with this state. I grew to love cloud and drizzle, salmon bakes and chicks urinating outdoors. One stand out memory of my contract happened every two weeks of cruising…. When our ship docked in Whittier and we spent an over night at a rag tag, rough and ready Anchor Inn run by a rough n tough landlady called Bev. Besides being in one of the weirdest towns I’ve ever visited, it remains one of the most memorable. Everyone seems to reside in one huge tower block and the port completely shuts down during the winter months as it’s shut off from the rest of the state. While I haven’t watched this video yet Nick I am hoping you visited. Here’s to the memories I have of Alaska, “mostly” good but not at all like the tv series Northern Exposure.
I mean, some of us were born here. And we love it here! Not much could make me leave this amazing state. Born and raised in Anchorage. You just have to know what areas to avoid. No different than any other state.
Hitchhiked to Alaska and back from Iowa, summer of 1973. Was on 6 month delay after high school before entering Marine Corps. Worked on a vegetable farm for Max and Dorothy Sherrod. Max had a 50 pound cabbage entered in the Alaska State Fair at Palmer. Could have been the winter caretaker while they spent the winter in Hawaii and then permanent employee, had I not been on 6 month delay, which I could have gotten out of. Wonder if I would have lived a different life? Flew to Alaska in 1991, to forest fires 90 miles north of Fairbanks. Stayed in Talkeetna 3 weeks on a month’s leave, 1979. Camped in the bush a mile out of town. A guy lent me a double barrel 12 gauge and had me practice unloading and reloading. It was May and the bears were lean and hungry, waiting for the fish. He told me to jump aside if charged and fire broadside. Smoked excellent Colombian Gold with a climber who had just spent 142 days alone on Mt. Hunter. Shortly after, he went solo to climb Denali, and was never seen again.
Hello Alaska! I came here via the US Army in 1978, divorced the Army in 1981, and stayed. My original home state was California, Los Angeles/Compton. Alaska is HOME for me. I have met folks who left the State of Alaska for years but come right back; it is home for many folks.

The beauty of Alaska is it's land. Not the few cities it has. 2.5 times the size of Texas. Alaska has more glaciers than any other state or country in the world. I went to Kenai Fjords National Park to watch glacier calving on a tour boat out of Seward. Seward is beautiful. Also check out Denali National Park. Best wildlife in North America. Drove from Fairbanks along The Alaska Pipeline for 15 hours one way to Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay on The Beaufort Sea. Stopped along Yukon Crossing, The Arctic Circle, Coldfoot all the way to the Arctic Ocean. Alaksa was unforgettably beautiful.

Thank you, Nick, for your videos. I'm from Finland and I love to watch your fascinating videos from the US. America is such a fascinating country. Have you ever considered filming abroad e.g. in Europe or Asia?
I lived in AK from 2020 through 2023. You have not done it justice. Homeless encampments look the same in NY, Boston and all over the US in various locations. It's a shame you opted to prioritize this as well as other negatives. The AK land is stunning and there are many quaint little locations as well as beautiful homes with stunning views. Ketchikan, Homer, sections of Anchorage, Denali to start with. Eighteen hours of sunlight in the summer with blue skies and beautiful water.
We hardly had any mosquitoes this summer. I’ve been here 45 years and on,y a few times they were real bad. My wife and I haven’t seen anyone in the last 11 days as we are at our remote cabin.
It will break everyone's heart in Alaska to hear this, but Nick can't perform any of his smokin' hot Milli Vanilli remixes up there due to the fact it will melt the polar ice cap and create cataclysmic flooding worldwide.
My husband is a plumber by trade. We were lucky enough to go 2 times on off one on grid . Myers Chuck off grid. Damn what a tough way of living. My husband had to go across the oven in small bout to get a toilet. Their way of plumbing was way different. The hubby almost would do to his ethics. Ketchikan is ok if you go off season. Still it’s a city life that’s super $$$$ . Beautiful land I’ve ever seen. ✨✌️💜
Nick, did you make it up to Denali National Park on your way to Fairbanks? Mount Denali is the tallest in North America. Go on a Brown Bear watching tour. The Alaskan Moose is the largest animal in North America. Makes me want to visit up there again. Alaska is still pretty awesome despite it's few cities it has. Alaska is 2.5 the size of Texas.
Alaksa is okay if you follow the tourist areas but if you venture outside of it you begin to realize just how dirty, run down and over taken by homeless camps. We use to go up there all the time and follow my mom up to ak on her business trips. After the 3rd visit I saw how bad it was up there and wanted no part of it. It's probably no different than the down town area of seattle where the homless people have over taken the streets.

It's really sad none of the things u see today was happening in the 70's. I gave birth to my son in Anchorage Alaska I 17 years old and it was during the Viet Nam war. I really never seen any homeless growing up.
Alaska will indeed chew you up, but not in any of the ways you’ll expect. You come in thinking you’ll nearly freeze to death or get attacked by a moose or a bear, but instead you get rained on almost 24/7, nearly get pushed off a mountain, get your tent flooded and filled with slugs, get annoyed by tons of magpies, and become so constipated that you have to literally have to pull feces out of your butthole. And yet, you will still have a (mostly) good time hiking and camping, going down to see the mudflats, making snowballs in the summer. Yes, all of this happened to me last time I was in Alaska.
I have a male cousin from South Carolina who married a military career woman in Alaska, he divorced her after 7 months of marriage because he couldn't deal with the long, cold and dark winters. Even after 10 years, I still tease him about it. LOL. I do plan to visit sometime in the future.

If you like hunting deer and fishing and a cold béer, you will love Alaska. 😅
Drop ur beer in the river it'll be ice cold in 5 mins
Nick "This place is F'ing wrecked"😂❤
Nick has an awesome way with words!
Nick, I wouldn't live in Alaska unless I was offered a great and majestic house with hundreds of acres of woods and a beautiful wife in it.
Why?
Get the house, skip the wife.
What the hell you want a wife for? Life is too short to deal with crap like that.
@@ItalNico 😂
The homeless would invade your property and settle down in tents
Probably why Jesse Pinkman wanted to move there
Living his new life in Haines.
Another excellent start to a series. So of course I’ll be watching!
Bill yessir!
Nick has such a way w/words!!😂
It’s those long, cold, lonely winters that drive a person to drink.
I live in Worcester, UK but Ive always had a complete fascination with Alaska. Maybe because Im a little weird. ❤
Even with all its issues I still wanna go! The last real frontier ❤
Reeeeeeeeee! Sounds personal miss karen portland
Alaska sounds like the perfect weather for me!🤠 The only problem I’d have there would be The Huge Mosquitoes 🦟! That would be a deal breaker for me!!💯
Plus, it’s too expensive there.
The mosquitoes weren't bad at all actually!
@@NickJohnson That’s super cool! Maybe it’s just in certain parts.
We hardly had any mosquitoes this summer. I’ve been here 45 years and on,y a few times they were real bad. My wife and I haven’t seen anyone in the last 11 days as we are at our remote cabin.
As always, a very well made viddy.
I hear it’s breathtaking. I’d LOVE to visit one day.
Just wanted to say Tthank You Nick. Your outlook and your honesty are very refreshing in a PC saturated society.
Yay!
I would have loved to hear the Alaskan natives speak. Beautiful footage! 🏔️ 😍
Oh you will!

Love this video. I had a different experience, but its nice to see different perspectives.
Alaska is on my bucket list. It looks so beautiful.
Great vacation adventure Nick, your always fair on your broad cast of places. thanks
Alaska is a mirror image of scotlands cities, uncanny the similarity of both countires...the challenges are the same..the squalor, the low vibes, even the weather...mind you, i appreciate cold weather, in contrast to our hot fusion sun here in scotland, burning us...sun has changed in uk, also..
And poverty pervades throughout scotlands cities, and some towns, looking like more like a thrud world country...a real hades hell invested hole...do yourself a favour, before travelling here, like we did thinking it was Scotland of the past...nope.
It isnt...research, research, research ...dont be hooked in by the holiday magazines, they used to say...we are researching to re locate to a safe beautiful haven..
Before the rioting uk and Scotland collapses...
I live on a island on the panhandle of Alaska. Petersburg is a awesome place to visit. We only have like 2 homeless people. The price of eggs here is 8.00 a dozen and 9.00 for a gallon of milk. We don't have large cruise ships thank God. The tourists destroy the soul of a communities.
Thank you Nick!🌺
I was in Anchorage year 2012. I had a fantastic vacation and I had smoked salmon bagel with cream cheese sooo deli🤤😋 thank you for sharing your adventure in Alaska🤗🌺💐 Stay blessed🙏🙏🌺
I have smoked salmon on my salads everyday. I put up close to 30 pints of smoked canned salmon this summer. Have been doing that for over 45 years.
Now you need to go to every most haunted place in each state!
It's really sad none of the things u see today was happening in the 70's. I gave birth to my son in Anchorage Alaska I 17 years old and it was during the Viet Nam war. I really never seen any homeless growing up.
Awesome rainbow thanks for the video man
Alaska will indeed chew you up, but not in any of the ways you’ll expect.
Thanks nick! You the man
Thank you for showing my state
Hi Nick I see you are still in Alaska. Good to see you. Take care.
How they sleep rough in the winter of alaska ???
Alaska is so beautiful.
I have a male cousin from South Carolina who married a military career woman in Alaska, he divorced her after 7 months of marriage because he couldn't deal with the long, cold and dark winters. Even after 10 years, I still tease him about it. LOL. I do plan to visit sometime in the future.
Being that you have been to all 50 states we need your personal review of each from worst to best!
Love the video ❤. My best friend brothers and their families live in Alaska. I was just a little confused when you used the word "Alaskan native." I thought you meant the several indigenous Alaskans .
Love the videos you put out to show how things really are. I bet seeing all these different places and people has formed your reality of how crooked politicians can be.
I really do enjoy you and your stuff.
Nick, congrats for making it to the 2%! I accomplished that feat back in 2017. Hawaii was my 50th state.
Beautiful, looking forward to the series. Thanks Nick
Makes me cold just watching this.drone shots are awesome
Watching your videos makes me lose all hope in humanity, we are a cancer on the planet...thank you?
I just can’t imagine us making it another 100 or 150 years. There has to be some major change in humanity for us to survive as a species.
@@SMaamri78what is going to be our demise, in your opinion?
