And for you newbies....us dinosaurs have been doing the same w/ film since the Dark Ages, only we had to use light meters. And Polaroid tests. And I had NPC backs for my Nikons! So, it's an old trick- made infinitely easier via Digital= powerful, creative results when done well. And, if you're only needing about 50w/s of power, a typical speedlight will suffice. You don't need HSS, a high end flash unit, a battery pack, etc.- but a variable ND filter is recommended for greater flexibility. I use a 77mm filter, 9-stops....and then pair w/ step down rings to Adapt/fit ALL my lenses....52mm, 67mm, 77.

Hello...loved the tutorial and thank you very much..Just one question. If we adjust the shutter speed instead of aperture to control the ambient light we can use the flash with less power to lighten up the subjects right?

Great photo great tutorial I’m wondering you were already at 9.0 at sunset is this flash not powerful enough to work during the day?
When it’s that much difference between the model and the background it starts looking like the background was either photoshopped in or that it’s a backdrop in a studio. I’d have loved to see the results of incrementally adding power to the version that the light was balanced with the background. I think 1/2-1 stop more light would’ve been the sweet spot but what do I know.
Love Dana Point, I walked out around the Headlands this year from the harbor side as far as you could go low tide without getting wet and didn't see that cave? Did you enter from Strands Beach at low tide? FYI: That sun changes every minute as the sun sets so your setting will change, I hope you mention that! OK @8:50 That was as far as I made it from the harbor entrance didn't climb or go any farther, will need to check that out this winter.
A secondary flash on the rocks to add texture would have been rockin
Good point about having the background darker than your subjects that are illuminated by flash. Particularly with sky backgrounds. Though how about when you have say vegetation or architecture in the background? Would you go for a darker background in those instances as well?
To bright flash look unnatural, when You have the Sun behind your subjects. Great tutorial 👍

Nice video, but I have one question.. how you focus while you are shooting the models? Was it manual or auto focus?
7.40 actually looks the best to me lol, it's how I'd expose them to make the photo look natural and not like I just hit them with a flash

What are your thoughts on the Profoto A10?
Thats great! One question: do you have a similar flash but cheaper? And what grid do you use? Because i tought you must take softboxes etc with you to make pictures like this. And thats to heavy for me to take with me. But if i can do it with only one flashi like this and a click gridd. Would be awesome. Tnx
You can try the Godox AD100 Pro or one of the Godox flashes with a Magmod grid or similar device.
To be honest, maybe just camera flash would work. Godox V860III is 76Ws max, which is more than 50Ws used in this shoot. And cheaper TT685II probably has the same power output.
I would add a flash with a round dome to slightly illuminate the interior rock

0:08 The problem with flash is it looks fake. It looks like they were keyed in from different photo into this photo.
I’m trying to go dramatic with fire on my human subject in sunlight. What flash would I need like 10 million candlepower. 😂

The Godox AD100 Pro provides the same output for whole lot cheaper.
If you're going to write an article on "balancing" flash with natural light, the example shot should actually "balance" flash with natural light, not be so obvious as this was.
The one thing that always bugs me about these how to shoot flash videos is that nine times out of 10 the look is hyperbright on the subjects and then the backgrounds are just dark.
I never really understood why that is just supposed to be awesome like all the time. I feel like the image will look better if at least a part of the foreground match the lighting on the subjects. They would be fall off anyway right, so of course the ground and the rocks next to them aren't going to be necessarily as bright.?
Again I just see directional flash on a couple, or subject matter, and then everything else is pitch Black except the light in the background and I just don't understand that aesthetic. So much of the frame is still dark.
