How to Potty/Litter Train Your Bearded Dragon | Fastest and Easiest Way (for me)

    Hey guys! In this video I show you a method that I found online on how to potty/litter train your bearded dragon and then a method that I used and worked for me since the first one didn't. Fitz was not harmed, maybe only manhandled, in the making of this video. Also, I only used the sand (aquarium sand) and the bowl-like tray as an example, I didn't actually try to use that method with those items. It probably would work with something that was shaped more as a bowl. Anyway, hope you enjoyed and if this method or the other method worked for you please let me know! Leave suggestions in the comments regarding which video I should make next!

    My bearded dragon is trained to poop in the toilet! I'm dead serious, too! He poops in the toilet, usually once every day or two, depending on how much he eats.
    He's probably about a year-and-half old; I got him June 12, 2017, the night before my wife's birthday (I got our first beardie ten years earlier, for my wife's birthday, as well!).
    Anyhow, our first BD was trained to poop in the sink, in warm water...she had almost no accidents, either...she slept in bed with us, and if she had to poop, she would wake me up by gently clawing at my cheek or my nose, and I knew it was time to take her to the sink!
    As for our current BD, he, unlike most beardies never liked to poop in water OR in his aquarium (except when he was a tiny baby). Our 2nd BD is a male, and has a very different personality (though both of them are/were equally lovable). For A while I wasn't sure if our current BD, "Oscar" would take to potty training...well, we give him tons of attention, and he loves "playtime," but one thing I always noticed is when beardies have to poop, they do that little "butt wiggle" thing...well when I would play with Oscar, and I saw he had to poop, I would immediately set him on the toilet seat (lid up, of course!), And I would gently lift his tail, and I would use a Q-tip to gently massage the skin just below his vent, and this would relax him, and within a minute or less, he would "pop one out!" The reason I used the Q-tip is because sometimes a little "poop juice" would run down (especially when he is very well hydrated), and I didn't want that stuff on my finger! Anyway, I would wash his vent, and surrounding area, dry him off, and give him a treat! Amazingly he "caught on to this routine very quickly, so now our lil' Oscar poops in the toilet, just like "mommy and daddy!" It's hilarious, but at the same time, it is beyond helpful to us, as we have almost no clean-up aside from rinsing his "vent" off. Also, another reason the Q-tip is handy (besides not getting poop on your hand) is, sometimes when he is pooping, if he has over-sized, old 'sperm plugs'/'mating plugs' that he is trying to push out, you can use the Q-tip to *VERY GENTLY* wipe them off, though if they don't come of easily, I'll leave them alone, as I don't want to do anything that could hurt him.

    I taught mine to use the bathtub. I try to make it a pleasant experience by singing a bathtime song. Yes, he's my baby. I also taught him swim swim to encourage exercise. When all done i tell him its time to wrap him in a beardie burrito and we watch the water drain. Then off to the living room still in his towel to lay on my chest for awhile. Spoiled little dragon.

    Hey Taylor just an update. Have been trying the bath method as you suggested in videos and haven't been able to get Chomper to go consistently. Changed baths to later in the day as you typically do and last couple of days it has worked!! Fingers crossed on our way to a good schedule. Appreciate the helpful suggestions. Love to see more of your gecko as well.

    Method 2 is what I've been teaching my beardies to do for years, but I also wash their vent with suds from a mild soap, and rinse it off afterwards because I'm a germophobe. My current beardie Luna once got left on my mom's bed indefinitely while my mom was doing chores, and she hadn't used the bathroom for a while and apparently needed to go. So she jumped off the bed, trotted into the bathroom attached to my mom's room, and knocked over an empty bottle of soap so she could scramble up the step into the bathtub, and used a washcloth to climb over the rim and slide into the tub, so she could poop in there like a very good lizard. She got a lot of praise for that. ^_^

    An additional add on tip for the warm water method is get a small plastic tub, this way u can just dump all the waste in the toilet and voila, even easier! My dragon Draco goes once in the morning, once at night, and 95% of the time 'holds it' whenever we're out and about. Basically she's used to going whenever we put her in the warm water within 1-5 min. Great vid!!

Now he only goes in the little dish and he always follows me and jumps around until he gets his treat. They are highly intelligent.

    I just use a square plastic container about the size of a large dictionary that I put warm water in. Every 48 hours in the morning before I go to work I put in 2 inches of 98° water and placed my bearded dragon in the water. he will always go poop within 10 minutes. Then I dump the water and the poop right into the toilet and I don’t have to worry about him pooping in his aquarium while I’m gone at work. This works amazingly well!

    If I may share - I actually had a designated rubbermaid container (16" × 10" × 6") that I would store under the bathroom sink. I trained my George from young to poop in it. The container had a divot so he could not scramble out of it. The best thing about this method I found is the cleanliness aspect:, and you can pour the results down the toilet easily. It is especially handy when you need a poop sample for the vet. You can drain the water out with a nice moist sample left to pop into a ziplock bag. To ensure the container was thoroughly clean, I would spray and let sit a diluted mix of F10 SCXD Veterinary Cleaner-Sanitizer, before rinsing and putting away. My beardie was not fond of water, but he knew that when he did his business, I would slather him with praise and snuggles, and most importantly - let him out! (Note: for water timid beardies, you can use a rock for them to climb up on. Also, make sure the water level is not too high - perhaps just enough to cover their belly). When I took George outside it got so that I could-ask him to go poo poo, and he did it on command. Beardies are smart reptiles and they sure do learn and appreciate routine. I miss my boy (he died last year of Adenovirus. He lived for about a year and a half). Thanks for letting me share.

    I literally take my BD outside and she usually takes about 5 minutes but she always goes potty. She hasn't gone in her tank in over 3 months. Before that she was going in warm water. I just happened to stumble upon the fact that she would poop outside! She's like a dog!! She also has a bed she crawls into every single night to go to sleep and I always cover her up with a little blanket. It's SO funny! 😂🤣

    My bearded dragon poops in the bath. (I use a plastic bin so she’s not pooping into my bathtub.) I then dump the water down the toilet.
    I’m a biology major and I’ve been researching bearded dragon behavior because I have an essay on my choice due at the end of the semester, and because I got a beardie so I’m curious, and I learned that a bearded dragon will raise their tail and then walk forward the length of their tail after pooping. This means you need to provide them with a pooping location that is at least 2 bearded dragons long so they can assess the spot as a poo location.

      try a small drill bit or a poker of some sort and poke a couple holes in the dome and in the screen take a couple wire bread bag ties and wire it down to the screen 3 or 4 should hold it good and when the light goes just untwist the wires amd change the bulb replace the bagties (wires) and done

    in the water method, does it leave a smell in the sink after and also does it leave a stain?

    • @TaylorCrane
      @TaylorCrane  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It has a smell first, but only lasts for a few seconds until you discard the waste! and no, it does not leave a stain :)

    Can someone give me a good bedding source for my bearded dragon? (Besides sand) I don’t want plain sand. I have rabbit food st his bedding so that if he accidentally eats it he will be fine bc it will just disintegrate

    Where can I get that sand stuff for his litter box?

    • @emmettakseli7135
      @emmettakseli7135 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can find the sand at pretty much any pet store it comes i a big bag usually in orange i would get the sand that is made from calcium because it will disgust safely in you bearded dragons stomach if it is accidentally swallowed but DO NOT put it 9n a babys habitat

    • @cmginfinity18
      @cmginfinity18 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emmettakseli7135 Calcium sand is actually a very bad substrate, for any reptile in my opinion. They can lick it up and it really does not digest easily, nor does any other loose substrate. It could cause impaction later on, they don't poop the sand out. It can stay in their digestive tract and the more they lick or accidentally swallow it the more it builds up.

    • @HaruDoneYet
      @HaruDoneYet 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jessica Van Scott it usually depends but the average is anywhere from 1-3 times. They're like people, they all have different schedules

    What I do is if my beardie hasn’t pooped and he wants to be held I’ll set up some paper towels on the table and I’ll set him down there and he knows that that’s where he’s supposed to poop so he’ll poop on the paper towels and I’ll dispose of it. Then I’ll clean off the table. It’s really easy to clean up and it keeps his cage clean

    I’m looking for a good hammock for my bearded dragon is there one you recommend

    • @rose87245

      I like the sea grass one
      It has gaps so when he poops it falls through and looks natural I have 3 hammocks in his tank, a sea grass one, and two green ones like hers one is on the side like a climbing wall the other a hammock. I recommend the sea grass one its big too😊

    • @TaylorCrane
      @TaylorCrane  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might! I've never tried it on any of my other reptiles. Im not sure if the same steps will apply. Also, you'd wanna make sure the reptile your training is able to be comfortable in water like a beardie is.
