Thanks for the history lesson. Those are some slick leglock entrances. btw, you can argue that UFC welterweight and Judoka Karo Parisyan could be indirectly considered as a Sambo practitioner. Karo has trained with Gene Lebell and Gokor Chivichyan under the Hayastan Grappling System which borrow elements from Sambo. In fact, I remember reading an interview somewhere with either Gene or Gokor claiming that Karo has an encyclopedic knowledge of leglocks.
They have their similarities, in they're both forms jacket wrestling, and share some history with judo. The big difference is that in SAMBO they teach a lot of leg-locks and there are no chokes (usually). Also there is Combat SAMBO, which has striking as well as grappling.
@kforcer Sambo has deep roots in Judo. If you don't already know:Vasili Oschepkov taught Judo and Karate to the elite red army force. He was the first foreigner to have a black belt under Kano
I think a lot of that also came from catch-wrestling; Gene LeBell being one of the only guys to be a direct student of Lou Thesz, Ed "The Strangler" Lewis and Vic Christy. Also, Gokor trained in an Armenian folk style called "Kotch", from which sambo also derived some parts of is foundation. At least, that's what I've read.
@billysue2 No need to be rude. Gene LeBell is just about the most qualified authority on the competitive application of catch there is, considering he was competing in judo while training with Thesz, Christy, Gotch and others. He was putting what he learned with them to actual competitive use. And you are confusing "koch" with "Gotch." Koch is an Armenian folk-wrestling style Gokor trained in and apparently teaches as well. I accidentally threw in a "t" though.
He's an incredible teacher. Runs a fantastic school.
This guy really impressed me.
I really prefer this beautiful form instead of BJJ but it's so damn expensive to find any place to learn how to grapple.

Good work!!
As someone said on Sherdog, the entrance at 1:35 is very cool.
also the least realistic. It looks cool because you wouldn't expect it. You wouldn't expect it because it likely wouldn't work as shown.

Steve is the man!

Those looping punches are intended to, of course, hit somebody but also to set up throws if the opponent closes in on you. Watch 4:50 for example.

nice vid i like ankle locks bro
@ 1:34 hes talking about how they only use practical moves and while he's saying this he shows the most impractical rolling leglock ever.
It's called a "casting punch." Yakuza01 has it exactly right.
type in 'casting punch'
POO BACK GROUND NOISE

Mother Russia
BJJ & Sambo cames from traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu, BJJ is good marketing but everything cames for native JJ why all peoples so blind
Because traditional jujutsu has stagnated in comparison to these derivative styles (eg evolutions)
the music sucks, bro.
Zheng Tai Song is Aphex Twin - Outside Kick Ass (Violin Solo). Aphex Twin definitely doesn’t suck.
