    STORYLINE:
A North Korean army sergeant rescued at sea by the South Korean navy over the weekend was repatriated to the North on Wednesday.
The US-run U.N. Command, which oversees the armistice that ended the three-year Korean War in 1953, oversaw the return of the officer in the border village of Panmunjom.
The repatriation arrangements had been made after the officer was cleared of spying, a South Korean Defence Ministry official said on Tuesday. He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.
The North Korean officer was plucked from a small boat that drifted on Sunday into South Korean waters off the divided peninsula's western coast, officials said.
The North Korean officer reportedly told investigators he had been fishing when his boat strayed southward.
The waters off the western coast are considered a rich crabbing area but have been the scene of three deadly naval skirmishes in the past decade, including one gunbattle last month.
During questioning, the soldier expressed the desire to be sent back home.
The two Koreas remain technically at war since the armistice has not been replaced by a peace treaty.
North Korea disputes the western maritime border drawn by United Nations, and the rival Koreas fought a brief but deadly gunbattle last month off the west coast not far from where the North Korean military officer was found.
One North Korean officer was killed and three others were wounded in the November gunfight, according to South Korean military officials.
Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been high this year, with North Korea carrying out nuclear and missile tests, but Pyongyang has reached out recently to Seoul and Washington.
US President Barack Obama is to send a special envoy to Pyongyang next week to try to entice North Korea to return to international nuclear disarmament talks.

For anyone still wondering. This man didn't try to escape the DPRK. He was out fishing when his boat drifted into South Korean waters and he was picked up by the SK Navy. I can only speculate on the reason for his return but the most likely one is that, if he had chosen to stay, his family would go through severe punishment in his absence. He may or may not have been punished himself but we'll probably never know.

N.K. isn't bad, the people aren't inherently bad, but as is nearly always the case in this world there are elements of the N.K. government that ruin it for the entire country.
The same with China and America. All countries vying for power over the others with brute force tactics and bullshit "sanctions" designed to starve a population of required goods and damage both reputations and relationships.
Let's use China v America as an example.
China does something America doesn't like, America decides to cut the supply of microchips and parts for computer manufacturing. In turn China moves up its military, which agitates Russia and Taiwan leading China to be at odds with more than one nation, instantly giving America a tactical edge and putting China and its people in danger of all out war with multiple countries, forcing China to have no other choice but to either back down or face a war of attrition with multiple countries that have better military hardware.
Its part and parcel of why China is currently spending billions developing new technologies instead of just copying Russian and American hardware and is a small part in why they are also building islands in the middle of the ocean.

bxttle So your just gonna support the North Korean government and reject the fact that North Korea is literally one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to human rights and the treatment of their people? Living in North Korea itself is not “fine and dandy”, not to mention that plenty of sources, and literally common sense and your “critical thinking” just blatantly and openly reveals that North Korea does not treat its citizens well. Prison camps and executions are nothing uncommon, so why would plenty of people just come out “fine and dandy”? They are like the fingers in a handshake that has been going on for more than 60 years. With the JSA open, secure, and stabilized there is a location that both sides can come together for each exchanges. The guards here served their purpose merely by going through the process of providing overwatch. As far as resources go, having a handful of soldiers dedicated to standing watch is worth more to their side's interest than simply adding them back into the force as additional military police to their conventional forces.
