Good job ! I wish that i lived in the midwest as there are so many trees. Here in the part of WY there are a lot of pines but not many with any size to them. When I visit the midwest I rent a trailer and fill it and the truck with as much 4 quarter wood as I can. Again nice job.
I like your design, it seems to work well. I do have one suggestion that should help the process...try adding wedges or shims behind your cut so the weight of the top slice doesn't pinch the blade. Thank for sharing the video!

this machine, unlike most homemade devices found on youtube, actually doesn't look ridicolously dangerous, so i guess it's ok to use it, if you made it and know how it works.
I like the saw mill. Just wondering, think will try the rims with a rubber padding around the center, that way don't have to worry about air pressure thx
Not a bad design. Looks quite rigid except for the ends. I'm assuming you built this with a specific purpose in mind. I imagine you will get frustrated soon seeing the underpowered nature of the mill. I think a 20-30 HP engine would be much better. I own a small Timberking mill with a 25HP on it. Couldn't imagine cutting with less. I'd say that before too long you will be extending the mill with the same substancial frame as what is currently under the log. Good Job! You are having fun!
As some one who ran a small professional 125Hp re-saw at a sawmill and some other small bandsaws do you self a favor and put a guard all around the blade, accidents do happen. The big blades if they get jammed like to run into the frame or they crack eventually and need to be welded. The small blades however they just break and go flying and are very dangerous.
I couldn't agree more. There's way too much government interference in our daily lives as it is...to the point of trying to make the SawStop a mandatory purchase if you want a tablesaw. Great job and congrats to you on building a great machine!
awsome fab work people jus dont know how to get stuff done anymore if the gov aint holding there hand i agree that its only as safe as the person operating the equipment best keep your head on a swivel stay focused and all will be good im in the navy and the regulations on crap are rediculous i have been in trouble a couple time for acting like a cowboy they call it and having balls and doin work accepting the risk but the benefits out weighed the risk

You are right, but you have to admit the blade will fatigue and ultimatley snap.. Then you have 10 foot blade whipping around your head looking to take it off your shoulders. Whats the harm in a guard?

I really enjoy watching your saw mill I myself am planning on building one but do t know exactly where to start. Did u have a set of plans to go by or what?
I started by going through all the metal I had, then figuring out how I could build the major components. I didn't make a set of plans but I did work out how long board I want to be able to cut, how big in diameter log would fit, and what the blade speed would be. Then I worked with the design parameters and the materials to build the machine.
Really, so the operator of a car doesn't make it safe or unsafe based on how it is used? and can you believe the wheels are not guarded. and cars are operated in close proximity to pedestrians. The only thing that keeps the wheels from eating the pedestrians is the operators training and skill. By the way the operator is 2 feet behind the blade and the it can't come back toward the operator because of the frame. From a knowing the equipment stand point I don't move past the plane of the blade.
shashaw08 I wouldn't move the log because it is much heavier and larger than the carriage required to move the engine and blade. The frame to move a 12 foot long log on a sliding table across the saw blade would need to be nearly 30 feet long. It would also need to support greater than 500 pounds for a good size log.
Because you don't have to. It's much simpler to move the bandsaw as it's a light mobile unit. Like B said, you have to have a MUCH longer track to move the log against the blade, and the frame has to be built much more sturdy. The beauty of these little portable bandsaw mills is just that.. They are small, light, and portable. Less investment, less hassle.

the blade can't come back... yes it can if it slips of one tire and than starts swinging around and if the blade snaps its nice to be behind the saw...because the forces are pushing the blade that way why not just machine two aluminium or metal wheels with a groove in the middle to fit the saw perfectly so that it can't move an then take a bit a sheet metal and get that shaped around the construction so that the only part of the blade that's exposed is where the sawing actualy takes place
be careful with that saw brother , my Amish neighbor here in ohio has one , the blade flew off track and he lost 1/2 his right arm now they have a metal mesh safety screen around most parts of the blade
well no shit sherlock but since its in movement and has a certain mass... its not magically going to stop spinning espacially since most of the times it still around one tire ,without the tension provided by the other tire and the distance between the both of them

It cost me around 250 dollars, but I had the steel and engine along with a welder,mill, and lathe to build it with.
This type of sawmill is the safetiest machine ever, because the wood is stationer but the bandsaw moving along the reel

Sweet mill! I'd be a little afraid of using it without some guards over the moving parts, but it works great.
I like it. No more dangerous than a chain saw. Of course you have to careful as you would operating any machinery.
How many horsepower is the engine?

How much air pressure do you put in the tires to keep the blade seated right?

How powerful is the motor? Looks like a lawnmower engine or something.
Tires are real tough and the blade isn't that abrasive on the sides. There no wear on the tires from the teeth.
Now make 1 that cuts both ways =)

what size motor and brand name your using? also can you use water on the blade to help it cut better?
TIM LASHLEY It's a Honda 9 hp. You can add a lube to the blade I have used a spray bottle with diesel fuel for wood with a lot of sap.

grgabby I haven't need to but if your cutting wood with a lot of sap a little diesel fuel in a spray bottle works well to lube the blade.

I feel like a 2ft wide 3 walled box on top a few dozen roller blade or skate board wheels ought to do it.
