Just found you guys. I will be following your adventures now. They are well done, informative and really keeps my attention. Fair winds and following seas.
Lucky you!! We had 3 goes trying to get east from Barbate but we got beaten back by gale force easterlies twice. The third attempt was successful but as we neared Gibraltar a submarine surfaced literally 10 metres from our starbard bow. That was a shock that will stay with us for ever.

Love the production. Looking forward to future episodes. Nice balance between sailing stuff and local history and places to visit. We have done this trip and currently based in Sant Carles Marina further north up the main Spanish coast. Keep up the good work.
Just to say that hydraulics do need a power source of some description, in your case a pickup off the engine shaft I believe. It follows that if the engine’s running then you’ll also be generating electrical power from the engine alternator, which even with run down batteries should be enough to power an electrical windlass if you chose. With a 24 v supply, good quality marine electric windlasses, bow thrusters, furlers, and winches are as reliable as hydraulics these days. Sailing a Hallberg Rassy 49 and an even bigger custom pilot schooner over many years, only one ~30 year old motor finally gave up, and that was most likely due to water ingress via a perished o-ring.
Well maybe Hallberg Rassy have a superior setup to other yachts, they do fit top end gear. But from my experience there’s no question that hydraulic systems are many times more reliable than high draw electronics. Yes you can mitigate that with 24v & 48v systems as it’s the high current that’s the killer, & what makes 12v systems really suck. I’ve lost count of the people I’ve met who have had major problems with high power electric motors on a boat, the two do not make a happy marriage!
@@Crazy_Worlds Sounds like you’ve been unlucky, my 35 year old tractor took a lot of abuse and didn’t always start, but the hydraulics never missed a beat.
Sailing Fair Isle - certainly will do - obviously the production is top quality as you would expect given your backgrounds but the , ‘style’ (and your relaxed personas) are spot on too - find it hard to believe that you could not get this commissioned as a program given the plethora of garbage that passes for reality TV these days
Well close! both a schooner and a ketch have two masts, Fair Isle is a cutter, two foresails. I agree the Nordhaven is interesting, quite unlike any other yacht. Not what I would choose but I can see the attraction, it would certainly be comfortable. I imagine expensive though?
I agree BBC documentary ,nice couple ,plenty of variety, history, facts, music and a few different color tops :):).There might be a competition spot the difference/odd one out later in the year food for thought !!!!
Ha! Well actually that’s only because people have taken the word Armada to mean the Spanish Armada of 1588, when actually it means ‘fleet of military vessels’ we can all be pedantic!!! No I have already held my hands up to that one, bad choice of words.
Hi Judy. Thanks very much for the nice and interesting videos that you release. In the minute 09:56 of this video (Ep. 5) you are seated in a chair which looks to be on the cockpit. Is it a garden chair that you cut off the legs or is it a product that you can buy and install in your cockpit?. How do you anchor it to the cockpit to dont let it move? Thanks very much and have a nice travel and sailing.
Hi José, that chair was something we got off Amazon, I think they called it a stadium chair. I would'r recommend it though. It lasted less than a year and became uncomfortable quite quickly as there are metal bars in it that stick in your back. The ones we have now are much better. We actually bought them from friends of ours in Cartagena who had bought too many so I dont know where they're from, but they say 'comfort seat' on them and they are from the Netherlands. You can see them in our later episodes.
At 5:43 it was not an armada coming to England. The strategy of the Royal Navy was to prevent the joint French and Spanish fleet from entering the Mediterranean. As on that day the wind was but a zephyr the joint fleet left Cadiz under full sail and plodded south aided by the Portugal current. Admiral Nelson divided his fleet into two columns and approached the joint fleet from the west, it is recorded at walking pace. At first the British fleet got a pasting as a result of enemy broadsides but on cutting them in three sections the joint fleet was divided. Bear in mind that the forward joint van could not turn back north, so Nelson had the day, but died of his wound, a musket ball that entered at the shoulder and penetrated to the lung. The poor hero died of asphyxia as the blood filled his lung as the surgeon was unable to save him.
Hi folks, just a bit a food for thought you might want to slow down on your panning around of the video a bit, really enjoyed the history aspect of Gibraltar.
Thanks for the feedback Gavin. You're right when I looked back at the edit, too many pans. Unusual for me as I never pan without a tripod as a rule and I'm not using a tripod for this work so not sure how that happened! Steve
I admired your boat when you were in Chichester (our CO32 lived on the other side of A pontoon at the time) Like Kevin I watch these only to self flagellate!
Lots of lovely boats in Chichester, one of our favourite places. Could do with a nice walk up to the Crown and Anchor at the moment... no wait it’s probably raining, I’ll make do with the glass of white on deck in the sunshine here!
She is a fabulous little ship. I'll be buying a 41 Molakia at the end of this year, so, I am a really big Han Christian fan. I am also in film so laughed my ass off at the continuity lady (Judy) making sure she explained the magic tee shirt! Not sure how far that run to the Rock was but be really careful leaving the outboard on the tender. Love the video's. Looking forward to the political situation in Bolivia primer.
You’ll love your HC. I think the 41’s are the prettiest of the lot. We looked at several, but they were older at not in very good condition. Plus Judy saw the double bed in the 48 at said she really wanted that. You’re right about the dingy of course it was deflated in the saillocker for trip over & goes upside down on deck quite nicely for shorter passages. For little coastal hops we tend to tow and have the outboard mounted on the stern rail of the boat which is what we did this morning just as well as a 50 knot catabatic gust off Gib flipped it as we left.
Yes, that bed is a real eye catcher. The whole aft cabin thing is great. Pretty useless in a seaway, as you know. Great work. Loving the videos. Not sure if you have looked into "Patreon" yet. It's a great way for people to send a few dollars to support the work. Thanks again.
@@charliemcgrain If the channel keeps going well we may decide to do it full time next year and do the Patreon thing. At the moment we make the extra money we need by flying off to paid filming projects, we still need to work until we retire.
Well, Fair Isle is a beauty, but, she is a "really" big beauty. Retirement might be a little further away than you thought. Just going down to 40 foot might save you 20k a year. But, I love the content. Even monetizing on youtube would bring in some money with the quality you are shooting and editing. I do laugh though, with Judy's 'received' BBC pronunciation, I find myself often waiting for her to burst into a report of the latest air strike in Syria of something! Really great work. Absolutely love the whole vibe. Thanks again, Pete.
Charlie McGrain Ha! Yes you’re right we won’t be retiring just yet with Fair Isle to look after and two of the kids leaving uni next year. We can work in the winter though while we’re in the Med. if the Patreon thing works we may be able to kick the other work into touch earlier and head further afield. Steve
It's just a big roll of rode. Impossible to keep long lengths of thick rope without having it tangle up when you need it any other way. Sea anchor, long length on a bight streamed off the stern as a drogue, line to shore, tow rope... always a need for rode on a cruising boat!
Peter shame on you! You're Soooo far behind with the episodes!!! we've been stuck at anchor in the Mar Menor since Ep12, now on Ep17. So you've missed being thrown off land by the police, running out of water / food / gas reduced to trapping and eating seagulls! Okay I made that last bit up... but really Peter keep up!
Yes the doghouse is something we really wouldn't be without. It was built in Holland when the boat was new. I think two mof the HC's had it as an extra.
Yes they're amazing. It's also possible to climb right in with a guide to get to an underground lake. Couldn't find a guide to take us this time, will on the way out though!
Ha yes been through that one! Armada is a group of fighting ships can apply anytime. But I agree everyone thinks 1588 when referring to Armada, shouldn’t have used the word!
Oh yes! there's a boat tour that covers inside and out. I call it 'comprehensive' Judy calls it 'long and geeky' be warned! Steve th-cam.com/video/x8SDb0syCWU/w-d-xo.html
I knew someone would pull me up on that calling it an Armada! Should have said fleet. Nelsons victory at Trafalgar was considered vital though as the Spanish were planning an attack on England. So it says in the history book I read sailing down anyway. Steve
I'm trying to understand how you were managing over 8kts with just a headsail out, and that was not filled. It was flapping away. In fact if I hadn't known you were doing 8kts I'd have wondered why you didn't have a coloured sail out. Was the current that strong?
Yes! 4 knots of current. You can play the currents in the straight, there is sometimes massive differences within 50 meters. You can also get some contrary currents inshore if you find yourself fighting a current. W-E is much easier than E-W, we will see how we do on the way out
Improvements from first episodes continue with much more ‘accessible’ style of presentation & narration! Well done. Wow though - did you say you drop down to about 60% house battery capacity each night at anchor? That sounds lower than ideal. What does your voltage drop to? By the way, continuing on the other thread about alternators and matched pairs of belts, mine are a matched pair of Gates green stripes. If you send me your email I can send you a picture of what a matched pair of boxes looks like?
NZL8970 yes I found some matched pairs on line after you said you had some. The Gates dealer we saw insists the tolerance is such that you don’t need them any more though. Mine seem fine, no dust. And yes 60% is normal in the morning on a day that the battery’s didn’t get a full charge the day before, we see a min of 12.4 volts, I think most people aim for a working range with lead acids of 50-80% with the occasional full charge on a marina day or a motoring day.
Well it did get warm in my edit suite (forehead cabin) yesterday, but I walked 10 paces to the cockpit dived in the water then sat and had a G&T so all was well! Where's your place in Spain! We're sailing from Gib to Cartagena over the next couple of weeks.
@@svfairisle Great job on the videos! Cathy and Sophie came back from Spain last year, we moved down the road and we found a great school for Soph. The Spain adventure was great fun but they're happy to be home.
Good that you got that sorted, shame you're not in Spain though I've got decent beer on board! Doing the videos is fun but it's a bit strange shooting on prosumer cameras as you have to doing this kind of stuff, just keep thinking what I could get with a Red on a steadicam!
She's a Hans Christian 48T heavy built (26 tons) full keeled cutter. There's a boat tour here... th-cam.com/video/x8SDb0syCWU/w-d-xo.html She's a very comfortable boat to sail, not the fastest boat out there, but very safe and sea kindly. Steve
Thank you, yes Malta is definitely on the list, partly because I think Valletta harbour is one of the most spectacular places to sail into, but mostly because my mother was born there and my sister lives there now!
Yes that's a very good point. The pilot book says you can leave it at La Linea yacht club but doesn't seem you can now and if you go into the marina security will tell you to bu@*^r off! We just tied out dinghy to the break water by the beach, it's so delapadated no one would steal it!
Great videos. Thanks. Such a change from sailors learning how to make films, to film-makers learning how to sail. Well, you know what I mean. Suggestion - at the close when you're reminding viewers to subscribe, prompt for a thumbs-up too. Panning has already been mentioned - really fast (with 'whoosh' sound effects) or quite slow is best. Looking forward to your next upload. :-)
Hi Robert, no Lord Nelson’s are very similar, but it’s a Hans Christian 48T lots of people confuse them. The Doghouse was an extra from HC, only 2 were made that way, I’m very glad we have it. There’s a boat tour video if you’re interested, have a look at our website: www.sailingfairisle.com
No they seem to stay on the rock. They are quite territorial with each other, there's several family groups that stick together. They are fed up there so they probably dont feel the need to leave. They would have a job getting out of Gib. as they would have to cross the runway like everything else that comes in and out of here! I agree though it's surprising they don't seem to come down to the town in Gib.
I take it you guys did not have to contend with Orca attacks while you where there. I know that they have been attacking boats recently in the straights of Gibraltar and there is a ban on small vessels below 15 meteres.
Not at the moment for the cameras I use on board. I use gimbals and steadicam for broadcast work, but I don't use the larger cameras on the boat. Steve

Could that be the largest commercial sailings vessel there is ? Thank you guys for the good sailing. On and on .
nice video thanks
Trafalgar was probably the most important naval battle in British history. We might all have french accents if not for Nelson!!
Nice place capetin fantastic meirci oveidoe 😍⛵💐👍👍
Nicely done!
@@svfairisle I wish that was the case on my tractor! :^ )
@@Crazy_Worlds Sounds like you’ve been unlucky, my 35 year old tractor took a lot of abuse and didn’t always start, but the hydraulics never missed a beat.
Top quality guys - very enjoyable
Thanks Paul do keep watching we like to get your comments
Sailing Fair Isle - certainly will do - obviously the production is top quality as you would expect given your backgrounds but the ,
‘style’ (and your relaxed personas) are spot on too - find it hard to believe that you could not get this commissioned as a program given the plethora of garbage that passes for reality TV these days
Brilliant video
Another wonderful video! Thank you!
Pleasure!
Incredible lovely ketch rigged schooner if I’m correct lovely boat ,but if I had the money i would get a nordhavan motorsailor
Well close! both a schooner and a ketch have two masts, Fair Isle is a cutter, two foresails. I agree the Nordhaven is interesting, quite unlike any other yacht. Not what I would choose but I can see the attraction, it would certainly be comfortable. I imagine expensive though?
Beautiful sailing ⛵️ video ! 😀⛵️😘 Mike from Missouri
Thanks Mike
Another nice video looking forward to seeing your videos
Thank you Brad
Your videos are so incredibly professional. A joy to watch.
Thanks Tom, appreciated.
Very lovely boat footage in the myst...and editing near perfect...Well done!
Only missing drone views and underwater!
Cheers
Couldn’t put the drone up, we were about 800yards from Gibraltar airport!
I agree BBC documentary ,nice couple ,plenty of variety, history, facts, music and a few different color tops :):).There might be a competition spot the difference/odd one out later in the year food for thought !!!!
I'm relying on you to spot the wardrobe fowl-up on the knots video. Amazingly no-one's mentioned it yet!
@@svfairisle Not sure which episode ??? but ill be looking now
@@simoncousin3241 It's not on an episode it's on the video about knots.
@@svfairisle Ah ok ,im on episodes at the moment ,extras will have to wait lol
lovely. thank you.
kittiwake aka skua has a channel as well. as does ryan & sophie. good shows to preview the weather as they're not far ahead of you.
Thanks Iain, yes just had a look they seem to be in Menorca and Sardinia, both places we want to go so will check them out. Steve
Hi. Loving you two living the dream! However, speaking from Pedantry Corner, Trafalgar and the Spanish Armada were only 217 years apart! Fair winds...
@@svfairisle Thanks, Judy and follow ahead gith your sailing and good videos
Well done with very good narration...I enjoy your videos..
Thank you. I am happy you like the style. I love trying new things with scripts!
Greetings froom colombia. South América. nice boat. Welcome for here. British style.
Thank you. Would love to come!
Very interesting, thanks.
Hi folks, just a bit a food for thought you might want to slow down on your panning around of the video a bit, really enjoyed the history aspect of Gibraltar.
I know, you are right. Pans don't work well on video. We will slow it down! Thanks for your help. Judy
Thanks for the feedback Gavin. You're right when I looked back at the edit, too many pans. Unusual for me as I never pan without a tripod as a rule and I'm not using a tripod for this work so not sure how that happened! Steve
Deus abençoe está lnda princesa e o amigo maravilhoso
Steve
Wondering, what is under the canvas covered mass on your foredeck?
Thanks for the superb videos!
JIM
It's just a big roll of rode. Impossible to keep long lengths of thick rope without having it tangle up when you need it any other way. Sea anchor, long length on a bight streamed off the stern as a drogue, line to shore, tow rope...
always a need for rode on a cruising boat!
Hello guys, are you still berthing over the pandemic in Cartagena ? Our yacht is held up in Torrevieja and of coursing missing her like mad
Hi guys, love that hardtop dodger. Did you have made or did it come with the boat?
Yes the doghouse is something we really wouldn't be without. It was built in Holland when the boat was new. I think two mof the HC's had it as an extra.
@@svfairisle thks
Haha love the reference to double decker buses, I hope if we leave the EU that the length of a double decker bus becomes a standard UK measurement.
What a good video that was, very interesting and well made. 👍
Thanks Derek, we were thinking we may have made the pace too fast as TH-cam videos tend to be slower so glad you liked it. Steve
derek wilkinson said precisely what I was thinking. The only thing I wish to change is 👍👍.
wow the cave`s of Gibraltar
Yes they're amazing. It's also possible to climb right in with a guide to get to an underground lake. Couldn't find a guide to take us this time, will on the way out though!
Awesome
Great video. Maybe check your history though - Spanish Armada 1588, Battle of Trafalgar 1805...
Ha yes been through that one! Armada is a group of fighting ships can apply anytime. But I agree everyone thinks 1588 when referring to Armada, shouldn’t have used the word!
great video - thanks - beautiful misty shots of Fair Isle...any info on her?
Oh yes! there's a boat tour that covers inside and out. I call it 'comprehensive' Judy calls it 'long and geeky' be warned! Steve
th-cam.com/video/x8SDb0syCWU/w-d-xo.html
Excellent quality as usual, how about a tech corner video on equipment used for filming and editing?
Yes Judy keeps saying that's something I should do, there's a lot to cover if I do that properly though so could be a winter project for me. Steve
Parabéns lindas filmagem
Muito obrigado, o litoral de Portugal e da Espanha a Gibraltar tem sido maravilhoso para filmar.
Steve needs to read his history. Nelsons victory at Trafalgar was in 1805. The Spanish Armada was Sir Francis Drake in 1588 !!!!!!
I knew someone would pull me up on that calling it an Armada! Should have said fleet. Nelsons victory at Trafalgar was considered vital though as the Spanish were planning an attack on England. So it says in the history book I read sailing down anyway. Steve
Sailing Fair Isle Good response I agree with Fleet 🙂
I'm trying to understand how you were managing over 8kts with just a headsail out, and that was not filled. It was flapping away. In fact if I hadn't known you were doing 8kts I'd have wondered why you didn't have a coloured sail out. Was the current that strong?
Yes! 4 knots of current. You can play the currents in the straight, there is sometimes massive differences within 50 meters. You can also get some contrary currents inshore if you find yourself fighting a current. W-E is much easier than E-W, we will see how we do on the way out
Ill just say it again , dont you just love a solid dodger - Fair winds .
Oh yes! best addition to the boat by far.
Godspeed!
Mum brought me a pair of Levi's....I think trading is free, there. Nice to see .
Tough life Steve!
What kind of boat ? How does she sail ? Thanks
She's a Hans Christian 48T heavy built (26 tons) full keeled cutter. There's a boat tour here... th-cam.com/video/x8SDb0syCWU/w-d-xo.html
She's a very comfortable boat to sail, not the fastest boat out there, but very safe and sea kindly. Steve
What a proper beautiful yacht.....lots of information...enjoyed the sightseeing and the history.
Look forward to more.
Is Malta 🇲🇹 in your sights?
Thank you, yes Malta is definitely on the list, partly because I think Valletta harbour is one of the most spectacular places to sail into, but mostly because my mother was born there and my sister lives there now!
Hi, where did you leave your dinghy? A good few years ago we had issues where to leave our dinghy when going ashore.
Cheers
Bert
Thanks for the useful advice, we are still learning in lots of ways. Steve
Is your boat, a Lord Nelson with an add-on hard top?
Hi Robert, no Lord Nelson’s are very similar, but it’s a Hans Christian 48T lots of people confuse them. The Doghouse was an extra from HC, only 2 were made that way, I’m very glad we have it. There’s a boat tour video if you’re interested, have a look at our website: www.sailingfairisle.com

Good point, well made.
Cool video... Does the monkeys ever track/escape inland? Find it weird if some of them don't try... them being monkeys and all... Do you guys know? 😊
No they seem to stay on the rock. They are quite territorial with each other, there's several family groups that stick together. They are fed up there so they probably dont feel the need to leave. They would have a job getting out of Gib. as they would have to cross the runway like everything else that comes in and out of here! I agree though it's surprising they don't seem to come down to the town in Gib.
is there always ore often fog around Gibraltar ?
It happens a lot when the wind is from the East yes (the Levanta) usually just early morning though :)
What kind of boat is it? Thnx
Hans Christian 48T. Ours was built in 2000
I take it you guys did not have to contend with Orca attacks while you where there. I know that they have been attacking boats recently in the straights of Gibraltar and there is a ban on small vessels below 15 meteres.
No sightings for us, I don’t think it would be a problem for us though they like spade rudders a keel hung rudders no fun apparently!
do you have a gimbal or stabilizer you can use on your cameras?
Not at the moment for the cameras I use on board. I use gimbals and steadicam for broadcast work, but I don't use the larger cameras on the boat. Steve
