It's nice to know the real life parallels of the asoiaf universe. Westeros- Great Britain Essos- Europe Shadow Lands/Yi Ti- China Valyria- Roman Empire and Sothoryos- Africa. Like Sothoryos, Africa was just at the doorstep of Europe but nobody went beyond the fringes until nearly into the modern era so it was a place of mystery. Ancient Europeans knew more about China than central Africa.
Doesn't really make sense that all of Essos is Europe. Dorne is suppose to be southern Europe with it's moorish influence. And Slavers Bay is suppose to mimic Egypt with its pyramids. And the whole continent of Asia is missing in your analaogy with the exception of China. Where's the middle east/central and south asia? Westeros is more likely Europe. And Essos Asia. With the free cities likely being the medeterranean at most.
@@SR-zv5ue It doesn't have to be 1:1 parallels. Grr martin mix and matches. The dothraki are supposed to be the Mongolians and they pretty much destroyed central asia during the height of their power so the dothraki sea is supposed to be that. The free cities are likened to venice, genoa and florence who became powerful after the Roman Empire fell What is clearly defined though is Westeros being Great Britain. The georgraphy is Great Britain but upside down, the wall is Hadrian's wall irl and the history is First men-celts Andals- anglo saxons and then Aegon's conquest is the Norman invasion.
@@ray101892 it doesn’t have to be 1:1 but again you missed the whole of Asia except for China. You mentioning the mongols is further evidence that Essos is Asia mostly. As for Westeros being GB it doesn’t really explain Dorne. Dorne is clearly Spain/Portugal.
@@SR-zv5ue Yeah my bad for saying whole essos is Europe in my 1st post. And yes, dorne is inspired by spain/portugal as said by grr martin but only in looks and culture to give variety to the somewhat similar cultures of the seven kingdoms. Their history though is more similar to that of the Welsh which like Dorne, gave william/aegon the c trouble and was not fully integrated to the kingdom until his descendants and even then, the culture is distinct from the rest of the kingdom.
I’ve always been curious about what happened to Nymerias people. And I know that they eventually settled in Dorne but they did try to set up a city in one of Sothoryos’ ruins and the next day they disappeared.
@RocketRiley Where did you get this map from?! I have been looking for an actual complete map of the ASOIAF world and have never seen one with just about EVERYTHING in it and as detailed/labelled as this one!! I love buying the maps of all my favourite fantasy worlds and framing them on my wall, and this is one of the last ones I’ve yet to discover, so if you could help me find it, I’d be MOST appreciative! 🙏 thank you so much for all you do as your videos help me get through some of the down time at work and I always play them as I’m going to bed!
Basically Skull Island on steroids, I hope George gives the license to other author to write a novel about a expedition that decides to go in search of treasure and obviously it goes terribly wrong or something like that lol
Hmm i like these maps but im disappointed there is not much in it because Westeros looks too small for entire human civilization to be in. You would expect there would other human kingdoms with their own problems and ambitions. All you can find is weird creatures and weird people everywhere else. No alternatives to Targaryens like conquerors that could make impact to main story. Multiple rival Empires that would threaten to send armies to conquer Westeros.
Sothoyros is basically skull island from king kong 2008
More like Australia

@@ray101892 Yes but I see more Spain in Dorne with the moors coming in, like how the sandy dornish came in to Spain. But yeah could be both.

She went to dorne than burned most al the ship to signifiy that they have found there place and won't run or abandoned it

West: Westeros
East: Essos
South: Sothoryos

It’d be freaking awesome if this is where they have Arya going on her upcoming adventure show!!

So what is the most intresting part of the map? The sanctuary of the blessed?
That isn’t cannon
@@Hstat910 Alright, Thanks for the answer.
That's fanon, I think only the entrance to the Green Hell is the southernmost known location on the canon map

Westeros is based on ancient Europe and it truly was like this, barely any civilization anywhere else.

Good video but it would be better if you didn't use a fake map
I saw that map on Reddit, the far east is full of Lovecraft references
