Thank you Steven for your brilliant explanation of the faults to look out for. You were clear, easy to follow and understand, just one of the reasons I prefer to watch British TH-cam videos. No loud rock music!!! 😳🙄 just calm and nice. I’m going to go and follow your instructions and then get back to you to let you know how I got on. In the meantime, any additional advice would be great. I have acquired a Memphis Patio Heater, no spark and I couldn’t get the gas to come through. I have pulled it apart to reveal the spark unit and will now look if there is a battery inside, also check the gas lines. Great video and thanks again. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Me again. I did everything I could to get the Patio Heater to work, but sadly it gave up the ghost. I’ve decided to abandon that project and I’ve put it on Freecycle for someone else to do their best. Thanks again for your video 👍🏾👍🏾
I am extremely grateful for your in-depth dissection of a gas heater innards. I am restoring an older stainless steel table top heater and I love it, but have no clue how it works. I took it apart completely and polished up all the bits, cleaned out all flues (except main gas line). I also took apart the tilt switch and cleaned it out. All looks good. The igniter is very hard to press down, its a manual one not battery. But it sparks! I cannot take it off the base so its hard to access that part of the heater. I can light the pilot light easily with a manual lighter. However, the main gas burner does not come on. The pilot stays lit. Maybe the thermocouple needs to be warmed up some more or the gas main flue is clogged. I'll try again tomorrow. The threaded part that sticks out of the base and is the knob to turn on, off, pilot, low, high is too short, so I'm having trouble threading a nut that holds the knob sections in place. Bit of a headache. Not sure how to replace that, or extend it. I'll reassemble again tomorrow and see what happens. I am really grateful for your demo! Without this I would be lost. Many thanks!!! 😄❣❣❣🙏🙏🙏
You didn’t deal with the burner not catching on - not lighting? I have a pilot light (doesn’t stay on?) I will hold it for about 1/2 a minute and see what happens then. I’m thinking there’s blockage of gas to the burner and will try with piping stick (don’t know what it’s called) to clean it out? Any suggestions how to check the burner?
Mine lights and stays on even works but wont go up to full hi heat even on knob high position flame is medium to low. and yes iv tried different full tanks with no difference ... anyone have any idea's
You didn’t address the whole flame not catching. The pilot works, but I turn on the gas, and it doesn’t light. It sounds like the gas is coming out fast and it is going to explode any minute.
Awesome explanation! Nothings worse than buying a new patio heater , using it once to only find it wont work again some time down the line . Ive tried bypassing the tilt switch and it still wont stay lit. Got the map gas torch out due to frustration to light it and a hold down the push knob to no avail . I guess after watching your video ill try wait for the gas 2 minutes is worth a try . Its weighted by sand in the bottom so falling over isn’t a concern of mine. In all honesty i want to drop kick the thing lol
I took mine apart. I also felt very frustrated initially. Then I decided I was going to make this work whether it took a day or a month. Today, my pilot light stayed on!!! Hurrah! I was going to give up but I don't like giving up on anything and letting it get the better of me. I also don't learn that way. So settle into the task, remove the artificial deadlines you have to get things done, and enjoy the process. Its amazing how this thing works once you understand it. Beautiful piece of engineering. The tilt switch and thermocouple assembly come as a whole package on Amazon for $13 or less. Tilt switch only costs $8. I opened up mine and its very simple inside. Its just a little steel ball that moves around the pushes a spring shut when tilted. They do go bad - they are made in China - and very toy-like cheap parts. But who cares, as changing this is pretty easy. Now, fix your heater and feel that warm glow inside when it all works smoothly. I made notes for the next time.
Mine works great except I can smell the propane and I'm going through a lot of it. It must be leaking at the connection. It's a table top so it takes the small bottles. How do I fix that?
Most likely the main gas flue is partially blocked or regulator is stopping it. Some regulators need this: Turn off heater. Turn off propane tank. Unscrew propane hose to bleed out any gas. Reconnect heater to hose. Turn on propane tank and wait 1 minute. Now turn on your heater. If it lights up high, then the regulator has a safety feature that slows down gas. Once you are connected no more trouble, but if you turn off the propane tank, you need to wait 1 min each time after you turn it back on. Second reason could be the main gas flue is blocked. You will have to unscrew the main flue (two wrenches) without bending metal gas line, and blow it out with compressed air really well. Use a can or compressor. Also use a fine needle in the hole on top. Reconnect, and try it out. Pull off your knob on main switch that says OFF, PILOT, etc. Put a few drops of oil INTO that shaft. Mine is very sticky so I am going to try that. Let it drip all the way in. Wipe off the outside. Slide knob back on. Try moving it from Off to Pilot to Low to High (with gas off of course!). See if it moves smoothly. Maybe it is stuck on the wrong position.
This could be a tilt switch issue. Replace the tilt switch or bypass it. See videos on TH-cam. It is super easy. A new one costs $10- $13. They all work in a very similar way. Be sure to color code the two wire ends you remove to match them to the sockets on the old switch. New one should follow same pattern.

Very, very thorough, thank you, just what i was looking for. Cheers, from Arizona.

Great video, hope I can resolve the issue with my heater after watching this,
Thanks for the great advice and content well done

Dropkicking might help if the tilt sensor is bypassed
My patio heater works but the flames isn’t strong and it’s not bluish or strong enough
How can I fix this problem

I need some professional advice with my heater
What if it lights up but the flames only stays at low (Hampton Pyramid heater) regardless of the dial being in high setting.

How can I rish you private?
Every time i let go of the button the flame goes away No matter how long i compress the button
