I love this! here's my interpretation, the balloons are memories of people hence why he can't shake the girl's balloon in 0:58 and the black bird in the end is Alzheimer disease and since his wife died he cherishes his wife's balloon but shares his memories of her with the child he identifies with and then the cycle continues until the inevitable supernova

I think the balloon he couldn’t shake was addiction, associated with the drugs he experimented earlier, which led to the end of that relationship.

Here's a sweet theory: the boy at the end of the story is his grandson (if you recall, one of his sons was a blonde like the boy), and he's sharing the memory of his wife with him. The reason he doesn't remember is because of his metaphorical Alzheimer.

I think the balloons represent memories and experiences. You should make new ones every day, but you should also share them because they'll be lost if you don't.

Anxious Peanut I think the balloons are a metaphor for happiness/ good memories, but doing drugs only makes you happy for a short time and doesn’t actually create a good memory.

Memories, love, feeling, life, and something that everyone has..
The balloon represents a connection or friendship you've created. Sometimes people will make connections with you or sometimes you just use a connection to get something you need. As you age those balloons disappear and create a new one. Though you heart may be broken you cannot break it til you've learn to forget. The crow in the end is resembles his selfishness, as he hoards the balloons more pop. Keeping them to yourself. Until you learn to branch off relationships will you earn one as well.
With smooth animation but with deep story I like it!!!

Huh. In German the phrase "to have a bird" literally means "to be mad/crazy". So when he got a bird... was when he started to lose his balloons, which seemed to be his memories, to what appeared to be alzheimers. I don't know whether this was purposeful, but it's still an interesting detail

The balloons are memories, I think, but by the end I thought this might be a short film about Alzheimer's.
+hgaflerby And the way I see it, I think that little boy in the ending was his grandson. And by giving his wife's balloon to the boy, he was passing on memories of her to him. That way, he could remember what an amazing woman his granny was, and what a loving husband his grandfather was to her.

Instead of memories, I think the balloons represent his relationships and connections with people. I think his first girlfriend was possessive and wouldn't let him be around his friends or other girls, thus there was no balloons and then at the end when his wife died, I think the black bird was depression hurting all his relationships with friends and family as he isolated himself.
but why did he try to protect the balloons if he himself chose to be isolated? in your way of thinking, the man and the bird are two concepts which you are merging them into one concept.. so here we face a controversy of a man fighting himself and at the same time protecting himself.. so you are seeing the scene as a self-destruction by thinking the balloons represent his relationships.. I see differently.. in my perspective balloons represent memories.. but maybe I am wrong
@@hamedsoleymani4077 maybe his depression is leading to him destroying relationships he doesnt want to destroy?? like he's trying to protect them and keep those connections but his depression's getting in the way of that? idk it makes sense to me
@@rebekahmikaelson1198 yes you might be right.. or maybe the bird represents his alzheimer or old age.. he gave his last hope and love and memory to the young boy at the end of the clip so on one hand the old man could make his love and memory survive even after his death and on the other hand teach the young boy how he can make his life much prettier by the presence of love

Balloons represent his experience bad or good which than become memories. But with age we only really remember the ones that meant the most to us and sharing them is how we make them live on.

The balloons are his memories collected through the years, that's why he couldn't destroy the balloon from his first breakup because he couldn't forget that bad memory, but it soon disappeared when he met the old friend and started building tons of new memories with her. Unfortunately he starts losing these balloon memories as he grows old probably from alzheimer

Up didn't own the concept of balloons so shut up? This video used balloons in a completely different way.
They are memories. When his girlfriends breaks up with him, her memories haunts him until he meets a new girl who he marries. They grow old together and have many more experiences together. When she dies, he fiercely protects his memories has they begin to fade (the crow represents death?). But when he gives up fussing about it all and just shares with others, it all works out.
Je pense que les ballons sont les mémoires, l'oiseau peut signifier le temps, et à la fin, le vieil homme perd ses mémoires à cause de la passage du temps et son cerveau décrépit. Le ballon dernière est le résultat de tout ses mémoires et ses expériences - ses valeurs fondamentales - et comme les autres qui sont vénus avant lui, il transmet ces valeurs aux générations futures ^^
