I started watching this man fish on TH-cam 5 years ago when he had 30k subscribers. Everything I know about fishing I owe to this man. Richard Gene has forever had a huge impact on my life.
Richard, you remind me so much of my Dad. Nobody could explain things the way you and him could. He was a Country Boy, son of Sharecroppers who survived the great depression. Dad was severely physically handicapped from a disease he got in his early teens. But it did not stop him, put himself through Teachers College, taught building trades to returning WWII Vets. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach in the Near East Foundation in of all places Iran. He taught Ag, water hydraulics, animal husbandry to the tribes in the country and desert. He loved those people as they did him. They actually lived in Tehran which was even dangerous to Americans in the early 1950's. They lived in a compound with 10ft walls, trained dog protected. Dad always had a gun handy and Mom slept with a revolver under her pillow. Dad only lived to be 59. The day he passed.........I lost my best friend and teacher of all good things in this world........Man, I got long winded.Woooooo!!!
Man, I got stuck watching some of your catfishing videos for a couple hours! Love it, Sport Second to None, the funny random clips made me day as well 😂 you woke up my "bug, itch, inspiration 'for the sport and love for it again thank you! Been out 3 times this week!
They are delicious. I used to go to the lake once in the spring and load the cooler up with 18 to 24 inch catfish for the freezer. Then again in the late fall and I would have catfish nugs or fillets all year. I need to get back to that. Great food and farm raised catfish has no flavor aside of the seasoning. Best time to nail them is find you a good cove and hit it about 3 or 4 am. Your golden until the sun comes up as they head towards the banks to forage for food in the late night/ wee hrs of the morning. the can be caught in the day also but for quicker results late at night/ early morning.
Thanks for your video Mr. Richard! It's hard to beat the fight of channel cats on light tackle. The lake I fish has zero private docks and exactly 3 public ones. So I find that a shady bank with a rock cliff, 2-10 feet of water, and timber will hold a lot of fish. I went through a spell catching them on a cane pole- the inexpensive telescoping variety. It was pretty good sport until one took off with my pole and I dove after it on the forward deck. I lit with a rib on a cleat but I did get the pole but the fish broke the line. Cracked rib, 68 years old, wife not impressed. I didn't quit there and a bit later a mean old catfish jut pulled the tip out of the pole. Then it was 4lb line on my ultralight and it was a sleigh ride every fish. Now I'm using 10lb mono med action and it's still a blast but now I get a good chance of landing the bigger fish and the hook loss has plummeted. It's all fun and those 2-3 pound cats make some good fillets.
Yes, for the southern state’s If I get to retire, I’m definitely gonna talk to that great man. It’s just gonna take getting over there going over there to Scottsboro .
Great video, Richard. Wasn't really expecting your video today, special bonus. I love it when your videos pop up. We appreciate everything that y'all do for us. God bless y'all and stay safe out there on your travels to these fishing spots.
Caught a lot of yellow bullhead when I was a kid and we ate 'em, but in the summer they really didn't taste all that good. In the spring and late fall they tasted completely different/better. I preferred flatheads, but in a pinch I'd eat a bullhead if it was the right time of year. I don't eat much catfish anymore and the older I get I prefer panfish or the perches like walleye, saugeye or sauger.
As usual, love the adventure of your video! Being from Texas, most of the time the water is to "algia-fied " because if the warm water and they taste "musty" but most folks up North don't even try them. Cleaner the water, the better the fish taste but the good news is that most fish sold down South in restaurants are farm raised with floating bait so they don't taste "muddy". Even bass taste/eat great up in the gin clear waters up here but they love their walleyes, mushie in my opinion with zero flavor. Different strokes for different folks....The point being, cathish are fun to catch and under the right circumstances, darn good to eat.
Nice catches brother I been researching more on how to land catfish. Days I've had luck were cloudy overcast days. Looking for dark colored spots that are probably holes on river bed. I've caught a few bull head catfish and white catfish. I love catfish fishing lately haven't had any luck. The summer was super hot little rain. The rain we had all summer was a 5 to 10 minutes mist then it made it hotter outside. With that I'd try catfish fishing at night since it was cooler and darker. Sometimes I used a weighted bobber 16 to 18 inch leader with a fat nightcrawler. 😀
I walked up on an old Sasquatch frying up a mess of bullheads he caught in the creek. I gave him some House Autry Mills batter to roll his bullheads in and he gave me some beef jerky that he took away from someone who was messing with him.
Man I caught a similar sized channel with my ultra light rig on my kayak. Sucker pulled my 50 60 yards from the bridge and took 5 mins to surface. Hyped me up
Yes, the legend he’s been blessed. He’s got it going on. I think he’s got a long time on this earth to keep producing these videos to have these type of personalities out here no questions.😊
Good’n Elmooooooooo….😂 My nephew was catfishing at Dekalb the other day and they were throwing out as far as they could… I was like boy they ain’t out that far… Then I showed him one right underneath the dock that was about 5 pounds and they still kept throwing out to the middle…😅 Old habits are hard to break… lol
We have a huge fish fry for family reunion every october. 200 lbs of catfish at least and that aint the half of it. My pawpaw is gone now but he had legendary fish frys , the local paper would come and take pictures and do a story. The family is getting smaller but we still do it.

Too bloody too mushy those bullheads are great to catch and release or small ones for flathead

Hey Richard what’s a good reel to use on a crappie pole that won’t break the bank ? I like open face reels
Do you ever fish tubes?? I’d love to see a bass fishing video with a 4” tube as a bait
Yes I use to do a lot of it! I'll add this to the list! Great video idea thank you!
Just caught my first bullhead a couple days ago with a honey worm and bobber
Yer aces!!!
Would love to go fishing with you Richard.
Shout out to the Beard Grandpa Rich!!!!

@RichardGeneTheFishingMachine LOL! Love you but not coming between you and momma Sue.... no no no! Not gonna do it. 😅 your on your own.😂
I thought you had a Yamaha on the boat...you have a new Mercury now?
Mr. Gene sir i would absolutely love to see you catch a giant 7 ft 200 lbs alligator gar
Wooo000, Elmo keeps stealing nose hairs to make bobber stops.
That boy I tell ye!!!😆
Hey Richard Gene! Is there a reason you hook the bait so high up? I feel like its easier to come off that way.
Richard every video you do is a lesson but I don't think I've seen a video of you targeting smallmouth...can we get that video soon
You’re the best
Heya! It looks like your filets were scaled first. Do you think that is important? Thanks, love your channel!
Great eating fish.
Good seeing another video from you Richard.
good stuff as always!!
Seems like Richard knows the fish by name
My cousin catching monster blues at Pickwick Dam. Are you near there Gene?
like your beard Richard
Hack of a Battle is for me 30 to 40 Minutes Drill with a real real Big Wels Cat 🎉🎉🎉
LET'S GO FISHING BABY!
How heavy is your anchor?
I think it's 15 lbs. I'm pretty sure that's right
Smaller cats under 5 lbs are the best eater cats in my opinion.
I can listen to him while driving. It’s like I’m listening to my grandpa talk and teach
What's the problem with the channel cats?
Hey Richard did you build that boat? 😀 Also, maybe be a dumb question but I ask do catfish eat creyfish? 🤔🤔🤔 I'm still learning.
Some of the biggest catfish l ever caught was under docks
Especially in November
blues are just higher in water column. so if fish down low most will be channels
What model boat is that Sir?
it's a 2019 Grizzly Tracker. also a 40 hp mercury 4 stroke. Thank you for watching!
Nice beard Mr. WooWoo
I would love to catch catfish like that. Is this in the late summer or mid summer?
