For me 'cut my lip' is about making the same mistakes over and over again although you know it's not good for you to behave that way. But instead of letting it get you down you focus on your pride, the things you have accomplished and feel good about. You keep going because you know you're strong like a lion. Sometimes you might feel weak and fall back into doing things that are bad for you or others but you're going to be alright.
I like 'cut my lip'. It's one of the weaker songs on the album but it's still great.
I especially like how Tyler has turned the metaphor of a lion from being somethings terrifying in 'migraine' into something powerful and proud.

In the album art Chlorine and Cut my Lip are the only two songs with red as the main color. I think the songs are related. I agree they are both about the song writing process and how painful it can be. Also on Blurryface's album art the two songs with red were both blurryface centered, and I think the trend might apply here too... When he writes songs he is doing battle with blurryface/nico and he gets beat up in the process, but part of him also likes/needs it. To inspire good music and to improve himself.

So I have been struggling with a nasty alcohol dependency and I know it's probably not what Tyler had in mind while writing this song, but for me it really resonated with my struggle. For example: "rust around the rim, drink it anyway" is me knowing the harmful effects of alcohol but litterally drinking it anyway. Also "I keep on going back, even though it's me I abuse" is really applicable here and so is "though I am bruised" because the day after a night out I will often find literal bruises on my body, not knowing how I got them lol

I viewed This song as Tyler talking about an abusive relationship he was in.
"I'll keep on trying, might as well, if you decide all is well."
He keeps trying to make the relationship work, because he has nowhere better to put his love, and they both are saying that they're fine, even though they aren't.
"though I am bruised; face of contusions. Know i'll keep moving."
even though he is constantly beat up by this relationship mentally, he keeps moving forward, investing himself in the relationship.
"rust around the rim, drink it anyway, I cut my lip"
he sees the "rust", the cons toll of the relationship, but still drinks, cutting his lip damaging his mental state.
"isn't what I want, blood is on my tongue, i cut my lip"
He know the relationship isn't right for him, the "blood is on his tongue", but still can't snap out of his toxic love.
"I keep on going back, even though it's me I abuse"
He keeps trying to save the relationship, even though his self esteem is abused in the process
"I don't mind at all, lean on my pride, lean on my pride, I'm a lion."
He's telling himself that when he gets hurt it's worth it, and that's just the price of love. He leans on his friends and the ones he loves, hoping to find support, but they know what's best, and are trying to help him out.
This is just my interpretation, feel free to reply with what you think!

This is exactly how i interpreted the song

    • @nickromero7140
      @nickromero7140 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is very similar to my interpretation. I kinda feel like he is being sarcastic when he says he doesn't mind at all. When he says he's a lion. It's like a women who is physically abused over and over again and has bruises all over her body and her saying to keep doing it to her. She doesn't mind at all. She is strong. Even though she is actually hurting really bad and can't really handle it. But leaving the abusive relationship is too hard to do so she keeps taking it. But instead of physical abuse, it can be mental abuse. It can be hurtful to someone if you never really express an interest in how they really feel. If you make them feel like you have to agree with everything they say, you don't really listen to them or care about them. That's not loving them like you should.

I tried being a lion in an abusive relationship. I tried telling myself I was so strong that I can take whatever she dishes out at me. I kept doing that for 4 years and it broke me. It hurt me so much. I knew that she needed someone strong, so I tried my hardest to be that for her. But it hurt a lot because I wasn't being respected or loved or listened to at all and that matters a lot in a relationship. It's really bad for you to be the one doing all the work in the relationship. You don't have to be a lion.

I know that it is a late post but.....it’s quarantine and I wanted to analyze. This is one of my favorites songs, not only for the lyrics, but the song structure as well. For one, we start off with a very slow and somber feeling. It really sounds like he’s doubtful. However, by the end, he has transitioned to an upbeat falsetto. Linking that with the lyrics, I think it really centers around the chorus. He’s talking about drinking from a cup. There’s an allure to it, even though we know it’s going to harm us. “We will cut our lips”. I think this relates to our life choices and vices. We know they’re bad and we can give ourselves “bruises” and “contusions”, yet we go back to them at times. In the end, it’s okay; we will get through it. “I don’t mind at all”. How do we get through it? We lean on our “pride”. I think he cleverly repeats the phrasing here. He’s leaning on his own pride and self worth, the person who he is. Then he repeats....I lean on my pride, as in a pride of lions. He then clarifies, and speaks confidently, “I’m a lion”. Summarizing, we get through the struggles in life not not only from our own strength, but by those around us as well. I could be wrong, but oooo well, that’s why music is awesome. Cheers everyone, and stay safe!

Speaking of Banditos, I have a theory. I feel like Banditos are the Clique. The Banditos are always helping Tyler escape Dema, and as we know from Leave the City, Trench can be represented as a concert (“these faces staring back at me”), and the faces staring back at him in Trench are the Banditos. So in the song Banditos when Tyler says “I’m a Bandito” he’s playing off of what they say at the end of every concert - “We are twenty one pilots and so are you.”

While I do understand your interpretation of "Cut My Lip", I always thought the song could relate to the DEMA storyline:
Tyler has stated in an interview that one of Trench's themes is the state of being stuck in a cycle. Isn't it worth noting that "Cut My Lip" comes right after "Nico and the Niners" in the album's tracklist? And that "I keep on going back even though it's me I abuse" is what literally occurs in the music videos (Jumpsuit-Nico and the Niners-Levitate)?
another way of interpreting it is that Tyler is willing to go back to DEMA if it means saving or helping others and bringing them to the Bandito Campground ("I don't mind at all, lean on my pride, I'm a lion").

    • @jamesplested3917
      @jamesplested3917 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

To me, I think this song is about temptation. The whole "Rust around the rim, Drink it anyway, I cut my lip... I keep on going back Even though it's me I abuse." ( going back to the thing that hurts me just because it's good in the moment) idea present in the chorus gets me thinking that. Then also the "I'll lean on my pride, I'm a lion" line is a metaphor for leaning on your friends and family as a way to stay away from temptation.... Or at least that's what I'm going to take from it

The "cup" reference doesn't have to seem sacrilegious, since that metaphor for one’s appointed fate in life is used multiple other places in the Bible besides in the context of Jesus’ sacrifice-notably Psalm 23 with “my cup runneth over”, but also in places like Jeremiah 25:15 and Revelation 14:10. (But your careful separation of Tyler and Jesus is appreciated. 😊)

“To see a lion in your dream symbolizes great courage, strength, aggression and power. You will overcome some of your emotional difficulties. As king of the jungle the lion also represents dignity, royalty, leadership, pride and domination. You have much influence over others. Alternatively, a lion represents your need if control over others.”
The dream dictionary is always a good place to look for symbols and symbolism. I think parts of the explanation of the lion fit well with what Tyler seems to be showing/telling us.

I haven't watched the whole video yet but my interpretation is that Tyler keeps going back to things that hurt him... He clearly sees rust around the rim but takes a sip anyway. It was personally one of the easiest songs on the album for me to understand :)
Edit: and him "leaning on his pride" (this is probably wrong) but I think sometimes pride can be a good thing... And the only thing that he can rely on because it will alwAys be there

When I first heard it, I saw the cup as a metaphor for depression/dark thoughts/insecurity. The song lyrics are about falling back into dangerous and self-depreciating mentalities even after you become aware of them. The lines "rust around the rim, drink it anyway, I cut my lip" could be about seeing the error in the way you're currently living your life, a way that has insecurity in the drivers seat instead of you. It's not what you want, but you fall back into these patterns anyway because it's safer and easier and it's all you know. But you might as well keep trying, because you know better things are waiting for you when you break away from old habits. "I don't mind at all, lean on my pride, I'm a lion" refers to not minding the struggle towards a different way of living and viewing yourself. My mental picture during these lines is actually of tyler trudging through trench away from the city and toward the final destination, with the clique (or the pride) there for support

This song is all about going on through life no matter how hard the obstacles are to get across. All about fighting your battles and persevering. There may be rust around the rim, but just drink it anyway, and cut that lip, because you're a lion. Lean on your pride. Lean on those friends and family if you must, but you'll get through it.

When I was listening to the song and he says "rust around the rim drink it anyway I cut my lip" it also could've been a reference to the first time he ever drank alcohol. He was young and he found an expired bud light I think it was, which would explain the rust. I'm not exactly sure, but I was reminded of that once I heard it

so somebody wrote this and i cant stop thinking about it "Tyler cutting his lip would lead the blood to drip down his chin. You know what has blood dripping down their chin? Suicidal crazed lions.
Later in the song he sings the lines " I don't mind at all, lean on my pride. I'm a lion." Does that mean he's a suicidal crazed lion?
Yes, I do believe that is the point and his "pride" is us, since most of the clique are depressed and understand him.
In the end Tyler is a furry and so is the clique."
And ever since i saw that comment, i could/nt atop thinking about the fact that it makes so much sense.
Anyway I love your videos so so much and I really hope you see this. And if you do, Have a nice day and I'm such a big fan.

The cup reminds me of Dead Come Alive, when Tyler says
"cause this enemy is to much for me
and this flesh and world is triple teaming me
it seems to be the very end I scream please oh please pass this cup from me!
The thing is it did pass
    and it passes every day
he took my cup from me and gracefully he drank the grave"
The cup is representative of the sin, brokenness, and shortcomings of us as humans- consequences of the fall.

I think the line "I keep on going back ,even though it's me I abuse" could be a reference to Dema. He keeps getting thrown into the darkness by the bishops, who, one way or another, are a representation of Tyler's own demons and dark thoughts.

Also found this: “Cut My Lip” tells a story of an unfaltering determination to navigate the unpredictable terrain of life. In terms of the album’s concept, the protagonist is willing to do whatever it takes to escape DEMA even though he may suffer wounds along the way.
The liquid he drinks may be analogous to freedom from DEMA, which also means freedom from afflictions of the mind such as self-doubt and depression. Freeing oneself from circumstances such as these doesn’t come without pain and sacrifice. The price he pays is found in the “rust around the rim” that cuts his lip.

The first thing I thought of with line about the lion and his pride was the lyrics in Migraine:
“I did not know it was such a violent island
Full of tidal waves, suicidal crazed lions
They're trying to eat me, blood running down their chin
And I know that I can fight, or I can let the lion win
I begin to assemble what weapons I can find
'Cause sometimes to stay alive you gotta kill your mind”
Blood running down their chin because they cut their lip? Kind of a stretch- but it’s the first thing that came to mind, maybe Tyler becoming the lion?

  • @nickernest6124

I think the chorus is about the music industry and how there is "rust" around his style of music and he doesn't care and drinks it anyway and the cut my lip may be some people hating on his music. That's just what first came to my head listening to it.

  • @niceman0918

I think the part about the cup and his lip I believe it is about his career and that it’s related to peer cheetahs line where he goes “eight days eight hour each without one line” I think the cup symbolizes his ability to write songs and how he sees and knows it’s going to be hard (“rust around the rim”) and he has drink or do it to survive (his income) and so cut my lip means he keeps eventually coming back to the beginning of not in line

Fun fact, a lions biggest threat is other lions. So lions group together and vow to protect each other so that if another lion tries to get them they can lean on their pride. Reminds me of when Tyler says that he will take the beating for whoever he talks about in his songs. Hope this helps!

I think bandito is actually about tyler choosing to be on a band. he could take the high road, where everybody knows his name (a solo career) but he chose to be known as a part of a band and now not everybody knows his name - he chose to be a band-ito

  • @bethnella
    @bethnella 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it is more about making the wrong choice, even though you know it’s the wrong choice! You know the outcome won’t be good and you will pay the price/let others down/disappoint people, but you do it anyway!! And you do this a lot!! (You can see the rust but you drink anyway) Don’t beat yourself up, keep trying! That’s my take anyway - and the clique/pride are there to lean on if you need them! Maybe they are letting new fans know that! This song is really great!

  • @shadowdreamsfarm6322

On the contrary, “rust is on the rim, drink it anyway, I cut my lip” is more of a reference to his song writing. Like Chlorine, he’s saying that pain, anxiety, and depression come with his music, but he ‘might as well’ keep on going.

  • @gekkyt

The lions and they're pride are, yes, perhaps about Tyler's family and music writing. But what I guess at is that in the Bridge, Tyler talks about how even though that cup of life he drinks from will bruise him, he still finds himself drinking from it because it has happiness within it.

I think this song has to do with temptations. Temptations are the cup with rust around the rim but we drink it anyway. We cut our lips and it buses ourselves but we keep going back to it, we give in to the temptation. And when it gets rough we learn on our support system "pride".

"I don't mind at all. Lean on my pride. Lean on my pride. I'm a lion." It's interesting because it sounds a lot like he's saying "I'm lying." I think it might be intentional. It changes it from the surface meaning to saying that he's pretending that he doesn't mind because of his pride.
