That setup feature was the GEAR RATIO. Which the f1 teams can only change it once for the whole year ( since the turbo hybrid era. You could change it before ). The longer gear means more top speed, but less acceleration whilst the shorter, gives you more acceleration and less top speed. If you ever watched the Hamilton Schumacher battle in Monza 2011, you would notice that mclaren was able to get the drive off the corner and draw alongside the mercedes, but then the mercedes would just pull away after that, because mercedes had a longer 7th gear and also less wing. Shorter gear gives you better laptime, but hampers your car's racebility, because you won't be able to overtake easily. It's good for when you qualify on pole and wanna just disappear off into the distance, but if you're a car that's out of position ( for example Seb Vettel in Abu dhabi 2012 ) you need to have a longer 7th gear to be able to overtake people.
Yes except for one thing; shorter gearing will not automatically make your laptime better, it's a trade off like any setup change. You can accelerate faster in corner exits, but you will lose time on the straights, so it depends on the circuit and other setup variables if lowering the gearing increases or decreases laptime. As you mentioned, longer gearing is usually accompanied with lower downforce, and the opposite is true as well. So sometimes, particularly on high speed tracks, shorter gearing will increase laptime, even on a full quali setup. It would not be ideal to hit the rev limiter halfway down the long straights of Monza for example, even if you previously gained time during corner exit.
I still find F1 2009 the most fun F1 game to drive (of course with a special force feedback steering wheel). It was my first F1 game and it never gets old!
The F1 2006/Championship Edition career mode is also very realistic. You start out recieving an request of the backmarker teams (Toro Rosso, Midland and Super Aguri) to be their test driver, You go along on an certain amount of tests, If you perform well and beat their second driver, You get their seat midseason. (At least for me it worked this way)
2:29 no adjustable gear ratios in F1 '22 because from 2014 onwards, there was a rule introduced where teams had to select one set of gear ratios for the entire season instead of being able to change them.
I actually think this is my most played F1 game hahaha, I stil play it when I go on holidays and stuff and it's really fun to abuse the physics and get mental lap times in time trial. If only there was someone who remembered this existed...
Played this doing a Grand Prix weekend, I went for the overtake and guess what this guy goes to stop it and flings me, so I dod the same thing to every car who tried to overtake
That would be such a step up in career. Imagine in F2, you get those invites to fp1 by teams in order to get 40 points for your super license and you can get contract offers depending on your order position in the f2 championship
Oh boy - you need to see F1 Championship Edition (PS3) or F1 06 (PS2). Most features are on that game too, but that remains one of the best F1 games of all time. Refuelling, manual pitstops, commentary, and on 06 at 20% or longer they will literally commentate on undercuts!
Honestly I think my biggest issue with F1 2009 is how easy the AI are. I blitzed the field in a BMW Sauber lol. I'd honestly much rather play F1 2009 over F1 22
In f1 mobile too u can see ur lap records in one page and also in career mode u hv to complete objectives like score x points or win x races or podiums or beat x driver in a season but u get to start with 2 teams at the start, however there isn’t the testing feature
I remember during the 2011 season I was in a lap time tournament on twitter with people on the F1 2011 game. I was beating people on this game on the Wii. Was before I had a job, so I just practiced so much. The driving is terrible though
i played f1 2009 on psp,2012 and 2014 on xbox,2018,19,21 and 22 and i would like them to make a game where they take a few things from all these games, because every game (except 2014) that was unique and beautiful, in my opinion the best were 2012 and 2018. The best thing about 2012 (besides the driver lineup and the emotions that the game itself gave you) were the driver academy and the challenges of the champions. Instead in 2018, in addition to the historic cars, I liked the various playable championships both with historic cars and with cars from 2018, where either there were calendars that included specific things, or where there were different scoring systems, and this made me enjoy a lot, despite having f1 22, I still play all the old f1 games a lot
At 2:32 that is the adaption of how long the single gears are, a lower setting increases the acceleration, top speed and the fuel consumption, a higher setting increases the top speed, but with slower acceleration and lower fuel consumption
2:30 those are the gear ratios, like another comment said, teams were allowed to change it between races until 2014. They allow you to change the "length" of the gears, so you have so shift at a higher or lower speed. Broadly speaking, shorter gears allow for more low speed acceleration by letting you stay in the optimal rev range more time, but it will also limit your top speed, as you hit the rev limiter sooner. Other racing games like Forza allow you to change them.
For the gears section, the higher the number, the higher speed is reached in that gear, the lower number gives lower speed. It's not as involved as it looks but it does help with good acceleration and top speed at each track
The ai in F1 challenge is even crazier, sometimes they will just squeeze you and lanuch you onto another car, sometimes they will launch each other in the air
The gears stuff is the thing that tells you when your speed hits the red line and you change gears so if you change that you can change gears later or earlier if that makes sense
The Gear ratios were only included up until 2014 I believe because custom gear ratios were somewhat removed by the sport the hybrid era - as in, in 2013 and prior you could set gear ratios for each track, in 2014 I believe they changed it so teams could only make a certain number of gear ratio adjustments throughout the season (3 changes per season I think) so it was removed because it would've caused too many issues setting your gear ratios up for Monaco then having to go to Canada shortly after and being stuck on the shorter shifts. I like the idea of earning the drive. Again in 2013 there was a young driver academy at the start of the career where you had to earn a certain number of points in the academy to determine which team you raced for. For example, if you JUST got the number of points required you'd only be able to driver for Marussia and Caterham. There were 3 levels of success you could go for but you were prevented from driving for one of the top 3 teams at the start - you had to earn it in a lower team before they were unlocked. I also used to love the OLD challenge mode back in the ooooold games where there would be scenarios from actual events that would play out and you'd have to achieve it. Like getting a flat and having to fight back to the points. Imagine being in Sergio's position in 2020 going from last in the Bahrain oval and having to finish first - that kinda stuff.
Would love to see Malaysia Nurbs Turkey and Valencia, the tire compounds in time trial, all your times on one screen. Outside of what’s in 2009 and not 22, online practice lobbies where you’re not limited to just 1 hour of test sessions, make something like GT7 where you can practice forever and choose when you want to do quali or the race. Better loading times, often feels like you’re waiting around forever for shit to load even on a good pc or next gen console. And historic cars
2:28 I believe that's just to adjust the gear ratio. Adjusting gear 1 to a higher number should, for example, give you less torque, which obviously isn't good but this is just an example. I'm guessing they could come in handy in some situations. For example, they had no 8th gear back then, so 7th gear would obviously have to have a higher ratio at high speed tracks for a higher top speed so that you don't hit the rev limiter
the gear adjustment was something that was part of F1 until 2013, after which the FIA mandated fixed gear ratios for conformity between cars. in short, yes this is actually a feature exclusive to F1 2009/V8 era F1 games.
Those kind of challenges like passing as many cars as possible and checkpoint challenge aren't only 2009. It was in 2018 also quite cool you could use vintage cars in them, in 2022 they replaced them with those sad speed through checkpoint challenges in between races where you use supercars but they are awfull to drive in that game.
Webby, I have been a subs to you since 3k back when you were doing game versions of irl racing with the commentator and its really great to see this channel became an F1 game entertainment channel and getting bigger every day, keep it up!
2:37 these numbers are gear ratios that change the acceleration and top speed based on which you give more priority to based on the track requirements. Closer gear ratios means more acceleration and split ratios means higher top speed with lesser acceleration
The only thing I think you missed (which is fair because it's default to the Wii, because it's the wii) is the motion controller steering. This has been on things like project cars and GT, and think it would be pretty cool to have as an option in F1. I find it better in places on GT than the stick steering.
You should check out championship edition if you can. Great game, and was definitely my favorite F1 game I've played. Very similar career mode approach, but just... better? Interested to hear your thoughts

to be honest the f1 2009 career system is much better and more releastic than the current career mode in f1 22
Gotta agree, the system was way more realistic and fits more on the sim-racing style we are getting
Funny enough but that’s how the 2000’s F1 games were too. Test session and then if you got it your in. You fail then it’s gonna be a while.

Those number are MPH (0.182 is 182 MPH) and represent speed caps for each gear. It was in the game when the cars were V8 (until F1 2014)
That's because in 2014 teams could no longer change gear ratios between weekends but instead had to opt for something that works on every track.
