  • Ask yourself this... Should Reward lead to Odor OR Odor lead to Reward???
Many of us when training detection dogs use the system of Simultaneous Conditioning meaning we have the reward paired with odor, then we move to just odor being present. Example Remote ball popping boxes, or boxes or what have you where we have reinforcement with the odor.
Delayed Conditioning means Dog comes into odor first and while in odor the Conditioned Reinforcer or Reinforcement is delivered. This system teaches tot he dog odor has to happen first. In this video we discuss this more in-depth.

What are your favored 3 odors for young, starting dogs?

This all depends on what type of detection the dog will be doing.

What happens if they don't keep their nose in the odor long enough for the reward? My mini dachshund literally just sticks her nose in and out so fast that I can't pay her inside the box?

There could be different reasons, but the most important thing is you have to select and create the criteria that you desire, and only reward that. This is not something that’s easily discussed on social media this is some thing that you have to be there in person to go over first and foremost. Why it’s happening and then create a plan based on that information how to get to the desired behavior and focus that you want and because there’s a couple ways to do that based on why it’s happening it’s not easy to give you a straightforward answer. However, at the end of the day you end up getting what you reinforce and whatever the dog has picked up on behavioral why is that they’re getting reinforced for maybe it’s because they know you had a reward there quickly doing the behavior and looking back up at you and they think that’s the sequence.
