Excellent - surface area I was aware of, however, how long the hide should be out before the dog searches was confussing. I had been varing it, sometimes only a minute or two and other times up to 15 or 20 minutes. Thanks to this video, I know that wasn't a bad thing to do! LOVE your videos, webinars and course material available on Ford K9 site - thank you again for all the great resources!

I like the search intensity of this dog. our team here in the Philippines also makes our training the same as what is happening in real life. in this kind of training the handler can exercise his decision making and reading of the dog. Also techniques can be developed on how to address a situation.

Thank you for this podcast. I am currently training with SWDI through their on-line courses and Jens Franks instruction is in-depth and well explained, really such an amazing trainer - wonderful to see him in a North American podcast. Documenting training and planning before training changes everything - and this has been done by other and promoted by others (Simon Prins for instance). It puts the science into training and makes things so logical. It allows you to see what works and what dosen't work with the specific dog and it enables the trainer to see what doesn't work, and how to approach it differently for the dog in front of you instead of wasting time trying things that don't work for that dog - less frustration for both the dog and the trainer. Hopefully this podcast will encourage people to look more at the work being done in Europe with operant conditioning and a scientific approach to training dogs, rather the popular approach of specific "methods" by only a few well known or well advertised trainers.

Hey, I love the video! Quick question If you put out a high hide and your dog is on odor but doesn't sit, which is the final indication, and instead goes into proprioception, would you reward him since, in his mind, he's sitting, or would you assist with a SIT command?

Question about risk of false alert in this long searches: Would it be helpful in training-scenarios to check the area for the search-item by the handler before give the dog a reward? I think of simon prins result tracker method or would this not work for this kind of training scenario? For me it was hard to see Elmos indication in the second find.. Thank you 😊

Were you ever thinking about ending the deployment without Ammo finding the second stim because of such a long search and only changes in behaviour? What do you weigh up when deploying a dog in an area for a long time/multiple times and risking the dog giving a false response because you are almost telling the dog there must be something here because you have deployed in that same area/had such a long deployment without a find or do you just work scenarios like that into your training?

Can you do some more reality based scenarios? As a private handler I really struggle finding sites sometimes! I am a member of your website, would really like to see more videos of building search as well.

Are there any videos out there on the actual daily life of a Contractor and how to get into the field? (I’m going to school next year at AK9i) but I want to know what life after school will look like… how to get a job, what a resume should look like when applying at one of the big companies like 3DK9, Global, Merrill ect... Only thing I can find is “daily life of a police K9 handler” any help would be greatly appreciated by anyone.

The death of explanation he goes into is eye opening I could listen to you to speak for 20 hours I have So many questions...........

I really hope they do the Kynology seminar in some other parts of the country. I'm a dog trainer in the Midwest and have been wanting to attend, but travel to CA requires a lot of time off of work and is generally a more expensive place to travel.

Its summertime no ac in the car they told me i could sit in the back of the car on the curb . And then the k9 showed up .

0:50 it looks like he is caught in converging odor. 1:12 he starts showing elevated behavior. My guess is that he disturbed the source as he walked through at 0:50 You stepped in, and applied spatial pressure pushing him off that odor and flinging it toward the wall/counter lip, making it difficult to source. My dog knows she wont get paid at an old hide, but sometimes she will return to one to parse out which molecules belong to which hides in a converging odor puzzle. We are always learning something from our dogs in detection work! Thank you for filming so we can all benefit from your learning!

This just happened to me the other night. We were navigating a tight space and I was trying to avoid banging my knees into the concrete and inadvertently got in the way of the hide because I didn't know where it was.

Excellent example.........do not spend too much time if your dog is not giving you a solid indication of TFR. Easy to talk a dog into a false TFR. That was a great example of how to handle that situation/interest in that area.

Exactly my question as my dog went to her first trial this past week and that's exactly what happened. She lost a point for passing the ordour, did come right back to it and alert - but still had left it. She is 15 months and started level only - we are still working on fundamentals of course, but this really helps - thank you!

As a Sport scent person, I wouldn't necessarily use something like this - but such amazing technology! The entire Getxent system is super cool - and so useful! Thanks

So in class we were taught if the dog returns to the one she already got, acknowledge with a good girl but don't make it to big and say search again. My dog will only go back to the first hide one time, once I acknowledge she hit it but DON'T pay her. She will continue searching but not indicate again on that hide. Is that normally ok? Should I change how we do that? And if so, why? We have been doing scent detection for almost a year now.

A Dog Dyson! This tech has been around a while-used something very similar after 9/11 for explosives. It worked in a small target area, but needed cleaned and re-calibrated a lot. Also tested out the Scent Transfer Unit -STU100 (Tolhurst) for a 3 month period and found it inconsistent. This design looks better.

I teach my dogs that the mark (click, Yes, whistle) ends the behavior. They don't have to maintain criteria after the mark. Do you feel this is an issue?

Could you take an air sample from Alchol(vodka) ?

There are many trainers that are using multiple markers which give the dog information about where, how, and what type of reward they are receiving. Not using just a clicker.

Ok I listened to this one on my roadtrip. What interested me most and also showed a huge flaw in my thinking about bed bug detection is being careful to only train for live bed bugs not feces or dead ones. If someone has a place treated they only want to know if live ones remain anywhere. Loved this episode. So much to take in. Very interesting. I'd like to have asked why he doesn't have booties on to protect feet in these places. 🇨🇦🐾
