Guru Amar das clearly talks about two souls of a husband and a wife joins with guru in laavan. Ananad Karaj is a sikh ceremony between a Sikh man and a Sikh woman. Everything else is manmat. Either follow the guru or not. Don't twist his words to match your personal views

I agree with VeerJI 99% of the time in this case I don't agree, I'm a male and I don't think anand karaj is limited to a man and woman, it's the connection of two souls, saying that it shouldnt be a marriage out of lust, both persons should have the same love and vision towards Sikhi and it's lifestyle
Gurmeet singh Paji being gay has not much to do with love an everything to do with lust. Lust is something guru tells us to fight. That's why it's not ok.
Indy Sangha wow that's quite a generalisation to make, I believe heavily in the qualities Sikhi has, especially eqaulity, how do you a gay relationship couldn't be out of love? I'm not trying to kick up any controversy here, I'm merely a seeker of truth, I find your statement quite surprising
I'm not anti gay. Tomorrow for example if one was to fall in "love" with an animal and that animal shared equal sexual desires to the human. Would that be okay? Because love is blind right and sex and love go hand in hand? Tell me why that wouldn't be love? I'm not saying being gay is good or bad. Not saying being gay makes you a bad person. Just like drinking alcohol doesn't make you a bad person. Or eating meat doesn't make you a bad person. But we just don't do these things in the gurdwara. Why? Likewise lust isn't acceptable weather its same or opposite sex outside marriage in order to reproduce. That's what I think. No disrespect to anyone.
Indy Sangha and I no guys that lust on women that aren’t gay and I no women that lust on guys that aren’t gay you don’t have to be gay to do lust I’m gay and i think about spending the rest of my life with the person I’m with so I suggest you keep your little bs to yourself how about that .
@Yvng_ Jeet your incorrect as married couples experience lust they don't purely have sex to make children many of them take birth control to enjoy sex not to make kids
More than than the same sex issue I think the most important concept this video introduced is the concept of Gurbani and Gurupanth and its relationship to Sikhi. I think this concept needs to be highlighted more by great pracharak organizations as yourself because most elders are not doing such. They want the younger to abide by the form and look of Sikhi but they are afraid of a younger generation of Amritdhari sikhs coming a presenting a more developed stance to the rehat. We must follow precedent but time continues and who is to create a precedent on issues not discussed. We will. And if this concept is highlighted I can see many of youth like myself take more interest in and turning to Bani, Sangat, and SIkhi
As with the points below, I don't agree with this view either. I'm also not homosexual and as such don't have a bias in this. In Gurbani, from my understanding, the examples of a man and a woman getting married are metaphoric in the sense of Vaheguru being the man and the Soul being the woman (soul-bride is the translation) - not of a physical gender. I am no scholar but that's how I interpret the Guru's Bani. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand Anand Karaj to be the couple recognizing the Guru as the center of their lives and of the marriage - once again without a hetero- or homosexual requirement. Though I do agree with the point that the Panth should agree, this is almost a catch 22. The Panth and the Paanj Pyaare are to act within the Maryada but it's creation was completely subject to how the Sikhs of the time interpreted Guru Ji's Bani (which in this case would be different as I'm interpreting the Bani to be about Vaheguru and the Soul not about specific genders). Without getting into a debate about the Maryada itself, if Sri Guru Granth Sahib Maharaj said to get married, I would.
@Himanshu Pant you're absolutely wrong, in Hinduism there are 7 types of marriages and a gay marriage absolutely fits into one or more of these technically if you're pointing to technicalities - do your research on Gandharva marriage etc to enlighten your brain please
@Yvng_ Jeet incorrect. Lust is when you seek sexual pleasure outside of marriage. Sex with your partner as long it doesnt become centre of your focus is not lust. The ulimate goal is be one with god.
@Yvng_ Jeet thats stupid. Many straight couples cant have kids for many reasons, medical, age ect. Are you saying they are not allowed to be married? Purpose of marriage is so 2 souls become 1, and to merge souls with god. Also for the 2 souls to help each other attain god.
This answer is completely misguided. This is based on a misconception of relationships and homosexuality. Not all people, including, lesbians are sexually attracted to other people and that forms the basis of the relationship. You may love women, want a relationship with women for a whole host of actors, personality, friendship, a chemistry based on PERSONALITY etc. It's not just about sex. No lesbian/bisexual should ever get married to a man. How can you become ik jot with another man knowing you would prefer to be in a life long relationship with a woman? So disappointed in this answer.
Ur last point holds no water u can apply the same to a straight relationship if one starts desiring others how can they be one jot ? the whole point is u try to raise urself to a spiritual level where u don't and be content with what u have and even feel blessed. Then u r in a position where u can become one jot and the jot is in tune and part of Akal which is genderless
@@dannysingh8786 firstly. U looking for 'anybody with light is probably where u are losing ur way. Why look for the light when u are the light itself. Why look for answers outside of urself. Even gurbani states this.

I took no offense to what he says majority of the world only wants to hear what they like and not the truth because the truth always hurts. Just like those people that are baptized Sikhs and eat meat because they lack compassion for animals they twist gurbani and say it is okay to eat meat. At the end of the day we will all be judged on our karma, god bless your souls.
@Hey Thur I am no one to say who is right or who is wrong I am a sinner myself I cannot judge another soul when that soul is god himself and I am a part of him... people do as they please. May waheguru bring us all back to where we belong.
Very good, and I agree with most of what you say, but vegetables are living things also. We must kill something in order to survive its the circle of life. Amritdari (nihangs) have been blessed by the Guru to eat jatka as they keep the tradition alive and live exactly how they did when they were having to survive on hardly any food in the jungles. But killing animals unnecessary is wrong. To survive I'm all in. It's so easy nowadays to go to a supermarket to buy chicken. Back in the day even in the western world people only ate what they could get there hands on or afford.
@@Sdhillon07 are you uneducated too ? Why don't you read Gurbani & educate yourself. Meat was diet of Sikhs and Gurus too. That's not an argument where you accused others for something else to make them agree on your views about something completely different.
First thing, Kaam is to be avoided whether it is straight or LGBT. Sex is allowed after marriage as a medium of love and children. If two homosexuals are performing a marriage out of love and then having sex out of love instead of Kaam then it is compatible with Sikhi. However if they are doing it out of Kaam then it isn't. Now the question is about Anand Karaj ceremony. We have to look at teachings of Guru for it. If Anand Karaj is between two sikhs and Waheguru for the sake of child birth then Homosexuals can't perform it. If it is meant as a union between two loving souls (that are genderless) then homosexuals can. However Homosexuals still have option of Civil Marriage.
If any religion does not view love between ANY two people as equal then we have to question the religion. I am a sikh but don’t agree with this particular part of Sikh doctrine nu e and I don’t believe God disapproves of homosexual love. Btw way I am straight, but I have zero prejudice against people of other sexualities.
I'm also a sikh but I hv to change my title I'll do later on (because I hv converted) I think most of the logic behind sikh religion's values are logical but some I don't know why but I feel are against all the gays and lesbians even if I'm straight though . I don't know what to say about what is right or wrong but when it is lv it does not sees gender it sees just lv only i.e unconditional love
It’s not about worldly love whether it’s gay love or straight love, sikhi teaches us this whole world is a dream and not to get caught up in worldly stuff instead we should focus on fully loving god and focus on our gurus and sikhi, Whether you agree with it or not as a Sikh we should always have faith and trust in our guru and the rehat maryada no matter what
I don't see homosexuals not being able to marry as a good thing. What if someone loves someone of the opposite sex? They just let it fade away and get married to some guy or ask the high level sikhs to give her permission to not get married? Gee, this sounds like torture for someone. I do not think that our gurus would've been against this as we are meant to preach to the divine. And the divine can be preached to in any name. And I personally think that if god exists then he must have made some of us homosexuals, it's all his doing and I don't think he wouldn't like two people of the same sex being together. I'm a theist. But I like the teachings.
Naman Bali you love your friends that are males but that doesn't make you gay veerji. What makes you gay if you look at them with lust. So being gay has nothing to do with love and everything to do with lust.
Hahahaha so what does a man and a woman who are married do? Have intercourse while having NO lust for each other? And do the same married couple not love one another while having lust too? Yes, they love each other and with love comes lust too. Your statement was WRONG and absurd if u ask me. Not trying to offend anyone but i just think that if someone is gay, he shouldn't be thrown out of a religion because being gay is in his/her basic nature..and we all know or think that GOD has created us..so wouldn't creating gay people be his own wish? I'm neither well educated on religion nor on other saintly things so what i said could be countered by anyone here.. I'm sorry if i offended anyone but that's just how i feel 😀
Maybe if they have intercourse very often for pleasure yes. To have kids maybe not. But its what you feel is right bro. If you can sit your own teenage son or daughter down and tell them its okay for them to have intercourse with the same sex then you are right.
No one can give the smallest shit about what a pathetic basement dwelling b*tch like you believes or doesnt. Sikhi says an anand karaj is between a male and female.
This is misguidance and unacceptance speaking out of u. I dont remember reading marriage is between a girl and a gay. Its what we have assumed. Gurbani cites marriage and anad karj but it never cited only a man and a woman can marry. Thats just the assumption made out because of non accepting society
dtoxicks bro I have read sanchiya of Guru Granth Sahib ji myself aged 19. I have nothing against lesbians and gays and feel they should have their own rights respected all time in every field. I wish there was something to go by in Sikh instituitions. But if you ask any Samparthai jatha sant. Their answer will be man and woman 9 times out of 10. Even after hearing that. My own work colleagues are lesbian. I have greatest respect for them i see them more than anyone else. But i do not feel sikh religion can offer them hope of acceptance. People will put on a wishy washy face. But reality is different. Look at a lesbian couple in shopping centre everyone will say how nice peace love respect. In a gurdwara doh kuria? Haw ah ki hogya? Like all canon-based religions, Sikhism is nothing more than justification for gender and power relations as they existed when its scriptures were recorded. @@jackal59 thanks for explaining your bigotry so succinctly albeit not as succinctly as mine. The comment above was factual actually, not so my opinion on the matter. It was objective. Anand karaj is sex-less union of two souls. Marriage is personal and so is religion. No Guru will ever encourage discrimination, hatred and spread of fear. Do as your heart says.
Marriage in Sikhism is seen as a union of souls, and the soul is seen as genderless, with the outward appearance of human beings (man, woman) being a temporary state. Same-sex marriage advocates refer to this as support for marriage equality in Sikhism. The Laavaan, the main part of Anand Karaj, are read at Sikh weddings for the union of two souls through marriage. In these hymns there is no mention of gender, but rather the participants are regarded as souls that are genderless. Marriage is seen as a spiritual journey to achieving lasting happiness through committing to the faith. i've watched one another video of yours where you said homosexual can't be in sexual relationship with any other person of a same gender after having amrit, considering it as "lust". where you didn't said the exact for the opposite gender. making it look more like a biased opinion. waheguru has never said in gurbani that same sex gender can never be married. where there is gurusahib, there are no sins, there is NOTHING CONSIDERED AS A SIN. as gurusahib's hazuri (presence) itself make the souls one. Lust sure is one of the wrong things, but it is not restricted towards the gender. Before anything, we are human first as said by guruji themselves. we are no one to judge if same gender marriage is right or wrong. and even if all of this is really revolves around two opposite genders, does guruji implies that binary and non- binary does not even have the rights to get married?? Equality is all guruji have asked and demanded from the moment the word 'sikh' has came into existence. why equality is not there when it comes to homosexuality?? (i'm not homosexual, but this is so unfair for the people who do nothing but love. separating two souls is the biggest sin one can do) people fear themselves, arn't able to accept what they really are just because we make them believe that this is wrong. ,” Only fools argue whether to eat meat or not. They don’t understand the truth nor do they meditate on it. Who can define what is meat and what is plant? Who knows where the sin lies, being vegetarian or a non-vegetarian" - guru nanak dev ji. all of this lies in belief. we arn't the one considering what and what not is sin. please don't let people themselves be seperated. please don't let two souls to be seperated when in love.
Any body can worship waheguru but Gurus don't accept lesbian or gay relationships we could not hide this fact, truth can be harsh but it has to spoken.however any body can worship waheguru and serve at gurudwara or submit to waheguru.
I thought that action for reason (this is evident by the story of how the first guru questioned the hindu ceremony which took part in) was a core part of sikh faith. Surely, an argument saying 'it says only for a man and woman to be married' would not suffice. This I cannot be sure of, but if it does describe the ceremony by labelling the two beings as man and woman, there could be plenty of reasons for that. Staying within the closet would have been high at that time, so surely even a word for homosexuals wouldn't have been created.
I have a personal theory on why people are homosexual. I think that people who are attracted to people of the same gender were the opposite gender in their previous life and as such the soul has a hard time adjusting. So for example if you were female in your previous life and are now a male, the male would be attracted to males in this life because as a female they were naturally attracted to males in their previous life. This would also explain why people are transgender, and you often hear people say I feel like a woman trapped in a mans body. I dont think this applies to all people, just those who have had certain issues in their previous life. I have nothing against gay people but I think the underlying spiritual reasons for the very real feelings trans or gay people have should be explored. It would be interesting to see if anybody else has ever thought this? I have nothing to back this theory up apart from my intrinsic thoughts on this.
Tee Man. I gave the comment a thumbs up. If Reincarnation were true that would make sense. I don't believe that Reincarnation is true but still appreciate the logic that you put into the comment.
your jeevan that soul within you that partakes in the reincarnation cycle is an essence of Waheguru who while being the Purakh (Husband Lord) does prescribe or is not bound to the construct of the living in regards of gender or sex. Thus according to the beliefs of Sikhi your theory is defunct.
To the lesbian who asked this question, your soul is genderless! Do not let someone’s homophobia define how you live your life. You marry who you love! We are not these bodies. Shame on the speaker answering this question. Another thing, live with authenticity! It’s about honesty and accepting who God made you to be. God created you as a lesbian. It is other people’s problem and spiritual challenge for them to deal with it. How you were created is perfect to God. This is cultural influence, not spiritual advice.

I have great respect for the late Jagraj Singh, however he was wrong here. He misinterpreted Gurbani; Anand Karaj does not make reference to Male and Female, but only discusses the union of souls, which are genderless. Anand Karaj is the joint commitment of two (genderless) souls & their affirmation of commitment to Akal. The reference to soul-groom is a reference to Waheguru, and the soul-bride refers to the couple themselves. The genders of the two bodies committing to that union is irrelevant, and the misinterpretations used (as in this video) to endorse the idea that same-sex anand karaj cannot happen are entirely misguided. It appears Jagraj committed himself to a superficial understanding of Anand Karaj before making these statements, which is unfortunate. It’s also unfortunate that Basics of Sikhi continues to promote these ill-informed ideas.

Well obviously these souls are not completely genderless because the physical bodies itself is in fact either male or female and is extremely important in Sikhi. It takes a Man and a Woman to reproduce it’s really just common sense at the end of the day. You have a lot of nerve to try and correct Jagraj Singh who’s devoted his life to Gurbani. I think the ultimate question is whether men and women currently alive upon this planet are ready, willing and able to evolve and transform with the times to create a new religion which may accomodate gay and lesbian marriages; and/or diminish religious fanaticism to accomodate the same? Otherwise, it stands to reason that religious fanaticism imposes restrictions which compels a 'deviant' community-member to become self-estranged, deceptive and a martyr for the big show.

Beautiful answer from Bhai Jagraj Singh Ji, We have no hate towards the gays, however, we will not bend or compromise our Sikhi to fit their lifestyle. Sikhi needs to stay pure as possible, keeping up with ithaas and gurbani is key.
Jagraj is correct on this, and I will give some insight as a non Sikh. I am Christian and also am learning from the Gurus. Marriage is between a man and a woman, even though society now says otherwise. Both compliment each other, and studies have shown that a traditional marriage is the best for raising children, and for the couple. The Gurus knew this, as did the Jewish tradition and the early Christians. As for the argument that it is a spiritual union, so what's the issue with same sex unions, we are given this physical form (male/female) as a gift and need to conform ourselves t to the Biblical wisdom (if Jewish/Christian) or give our heads to the Guru (Sikhi), not blindly follow our own desires and ego. I see the same thing happening with some progressive young Sikhs interpretating Gurbani to suit thier desires the same that some Christians do with the Scriptures. This has been disesterous for the Christian faith, and I see it happening in Sikhi.
It is time to update the rahet mariaada. Pure and simple if it does not go through an update addressing same sex marriage, technology, education programs for new (especially non Punjabi background) Sikhs, gurbani in the info age, explicit stances against bigotry with both ingroups (lgbt Sikhs, racially different Sikhs, different levels of religiosity) and out groups (everyone who doesn't call themselves Sikh). If these issues aren't addressed in the proper way Sikhism will become a relic of the past not a force for a bright future. I know khalsa panth is guru but also what exactly does that mean when every human had houme to contend with and is corrupted.
My stance on anand karaj is it is always two soul brides (human soul) attaching their live to the husband lord(supreme soul). Gender here is a symbolic teaching tool not a qualifier. Any two human souls who wish to make a Sikh life together. The fact that Indian elders don't get it disqualified them from making decisions on behalf of waheguru.
Heterosexuality is the norm amongst humans... But Sikh teaching is intended to be inclusive and conservative thought that says lgbt folks can't qualify for a full life in Sikhi will destroy it from within. Gurus blessings will pass on to folks who are willing to spread true gurmat and bring sachkand. Equality for all is a MUST or we are hypocrites.

This great man Bhai jagraj singh who sadly passed away a few years back was an inspiration to sikh youth and is 1 of many influences on bringing me back to sikhi. They gave there time to help the youth in the west learn more about sikhi as it also helped his life when he became amritdari.
And how were they born. I need you to tell me where lesbians came from. Read Hindu mythology? Do it. Educate yourself first. And don't simply watch a video and be swayed.
Homosexuality is not in accordance with Gurmat. If ones looks at 'Sikh' ithaas no precedent was ever set for gay or lesbian relationships. There is no place for it in Anand Karaj for sure and my personal view not in Civil partnerships either for practising Sikhs. Unfortunately the West especially has normalised these relations through daft laws and hence some people who are not even that way inclined end up experimenting to fulfil their kaamic desires. As Sikhs we would not persecute homosexuals or think of them any lesser as humans but when some go as far as saying that their lifestyle okay with Gurmat its frankly ludicrous.
That there is no known case of gay marriage at this time is not very surprising, because it was not supported by the culture. But there are many things for which you can't find any historical cases but yet they are practiced normally. And there is no interdiction in the bani, please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't understand what should be wrong with it. If two people want to be together who are we to forbid it? Isn't it their decision?
It was considered one of the unnatural 'Philias' prior to the 70's in the US. Just because the West in particular have made everyone accustom to it through media, propaganda and changing Laws does not make it right. Even elements of Sikhs have twisted Gurbani to justify this behaviour. Gurbani can heal everything and anyone if one had sharda but when not present they choose the easy route and go against what nature intended. Guru Kirpa Karan that the Panth is not influenced by the pro-homosexuality groups and stays steadfast and Niara.
Inderjit Singh Who says that this is against nature? How can love be against nature? The view on homosexuality drastically changed through time. In ancient greece it was normal to have a homosexual relationship. Platon even said that true love could only exist between two men. And ancient greece is often seen as the origin of the culture of the west. And as far as I know homosexuality wasn't very uncommen in India in former times as well. Actually it seems as if it was normal and accepted till the influence of the west. Isn't it ironic?
What people of other faiths or the faithless want to do is entirely their choice. Please do not try and convince Sikhs that this is normal. I can only presume you are not a practising Gursikh from your comments and reply to my previous post.
Inderjit Singh Why not? The Sikh faith doesn't say that this is somehow abnormal, doesn't it? Only some Sikhs say that this is abnormal or unnatural. I talked to Sikhs and the opinions are so diverse that it is often hard to understand what the panth really says about a certain topic. Homosexuality is such a topic. Some say it's totally okay and some say it's unnatural and should be banned. I just wonder why so many people care about the sexuality of other people and judge them. Why can't everyone do what they like to do as long as they are not hurting others? like having a samesex marriages? What should be wrong with this?
Indeed, it’s funny because in another clip I saw on twitter Jagraj is saying that things can change, rehat can change if the panth decides something new, it is flexible. But if you’re going to bow down to history (or in this case, a lack thereof), and close the discussion, how will the panth ever change?

@Yvng_ Jeet Thank you for your reply. When you refer to ‘purpose’, could you be specific regarding what you mean please? The following questions might help as prompts: Who is this purpose dictated or created by? Or is evolved? Purpose in the eyes of whom?
@Yvng_ Jeet I can’t make sense of anything you’ve typed (with respect). You say lust is for reproduction, but now we evolved, that’s it’s okay. What do you mean ‘now that we have evolved’? Are you implying lust was not first evolved for reproduction, and now it is evolved for reproduction? Please use full stops and commas, the meanings of sentences can change without them.
@Yvng_ Jeet I would agree that not giving into urges frees up mental resources to focus on other things, for example god if one believes in him. I think the key part I disagree with you about - if I understood you correctly - is that the quality (as in characteristic) of lust is different if it’s directed towards a person of the same sex, or different sex. Lust is lust.
@Yvng_ Jeet Your writing skills have plummeted again! So there are two parts to your argument; karma and biological. Because I don’t believe in karma and it’s mechanisms, it’s difficult for us to discuss that, because we are almost speaking different languages. On the other hand we both believe in biological causes and evolution, so we can both discuss that further, so let’s focus on that. I think the problem is that you don’t have a good understanding of evolution. It involves random mutations, meaning there’s no foresight or purpose. There’s also a difference between proximate and ultimate evolutionary causes. There’s also the problem of teleological thinking wrongly applied to evolution. There’s also a difference between what’s useful for the genes, and what’s useful for the species, and what’s useful for the individuals flourishing. With respect, I think that because you don’t seem to understand those, you’re arriving at the wrong conclusions.
There is nothing called God!There is just a creator! Religion confuses creator with god!/there is nothing called a code of conduct. I can in ten minutes prove anyone who is ready to have a logical discussion that there is nothing as God or Religion! Whosoever it is. I can!

I'm not gay btw just saying :p
Gurmeet singh Paji being gay has not much to do with love an everything to do with lust. Lust is something guru tells us to fight. That's why it's not ok.

Everyone is deaf apparently or didnt watch the whole video he said u can go get married but cant do an anand karaj which is a holy ceremony for amritdhari sikhs
The fact that Indian elders don't get it disqualified them from making decisions on behalf of waheguru.
completely disagree with you, our ithaas and gurbani promotes Heterosexuality. stop trying to destroy the faith.
@@isaacmarcum1923 Western/Colonial thoughts of equality are useless for Sikhi. Again stop trying to impose western ideologies of "equality" on the faith that is something a colonist would do.
So homophobic discrimination is part of Sikhi? Give examples please. Lets get into the weeds on this. Site gurbani. Dasam bani. Even bhai gurdas ji. Where does any of our sources exclude anyone from becoming gurmukh based on gender or sexual orientation. It honestly needs to be layed out.

Speeches on sikhi are given daily in the gurdwara, unfortunately in the Western world the leaders in our gurdwaras are more concerned about how many booking to do in a week so they can fill there pockets. This great man Bhai jagraj singh who sadly passed away a few years back was an inspiration to sikh youth and is 1 of many influences on bringing me back to sikhi. They gave there time to help the youth in the west learn more about sikhi as it also helped his life when he became amritdari.

The point of History is what surprises me ..... Like really ?
Indeed, it’s funny because in another clip I saw on twitter Jagraj is saying that things can change, rehat can change if the panth decides something new, it is flexible. But if you’re going to bow down to history (or in this case, a lack thereof), and close the discussion, how will the panth ever change?
@@aer0089 Panth won't decide anything that goes against Gurbani. Guru Amardas mentioned two souls of a wife and a husband in laavan. All metophors of marriage in GGS are of a male and a female.

If u have love for guru u wudnt be a bondu! Thats what i believe
