    Great video, but I have to disagree that they are "not smart". And "don't like being handled". I was able to teach one of mine his name (he glances over every time I say his name) and he loves coming out. Sometimes he will step up onto my hand if i put it in his cage and I've had a few times where he doesn't wanna go back in. Yes

      Brian Murphy that is what I believe as well. I think he is completely right with saying they want to eat, not get eaten, and reproduce. But I think that there is more to that. That's how us human were before we toned it out and I feel as though the geckos can feel more especially the longer they own.

    "People always think that crested geckos live way up in the trees and that they need these vertically oriented enclosures with branches to simulate that...but really, they live anywhere from ground level to about six feet up. That's it."
    Um...I don't know of anyone who builds a 30 foot tall enclosure for a crestie. Vertical enclosures typically go up 2-3 feet...and have a floor. In what way is that simulating a forest canopy and _not_ the typical area where cresties live?

    I don't think my cresties love me like a dog does, but I do have some that like to come out to hang. They enjoy climbing, jumping, and exploring when I take them out and hate going back in their vivarium. To say that they only like their vivarium and come out just for our sake isn't true.

  • @denniswald1798
    @denniswald1798 5 ปีที่แล้ว +128

    I can tell you don’t care about individual geckos themselves, that’s the problem about collectors, they don’t believe they have emotions or feelings. You just think they are objects and only care about the patterns or morphs. I had a crested gecko for a long time and when I would put his fruit mush in his enclosure he would turn it down but when I would put it on my finger he would come right down, and eat from my finger. They have feelings. They remember faces. And they can remember words, even if they don’t know what the word means. You just treat them like collectibles.

    • @Borussofunny
      @Borussofunny 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I think it is possible that crested geckos don't have much in the way of feelings in the wild, but when we interact with them they start to pick up on emotions if they are in an enriched environment where they can think beyond avoiding predators. I wonder if we kind of humanize them just by interacting with them.

    • @mrs.mekiaellemouyers1973
      @mrs.mekiaellemouyers1973 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Right!? Every living thing has a personality, EVEN PLANTS!!!!! How can we know if organisms have feelings and emotions. Answer: everything does!!! It doesn't matter what type of species it is. But we can never actually TRULY know what they feel until we step in their ..................well in this case microscopic hairs 😂😂.

    • @jonnylumberjack6223
      @jonnylumberjack6223 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Just, no. Their brains do not have the capacity for emotion. That doesn't mean they can't feel pain, or be stressed - they are not robots. All living creatures have a central nervous system and with that comes the ability to feel and react to their environments. They can associate their care giver with positive or negative experiences. But that is it. Stop anthropomorphising them and respect them for what they are.

    • @brammer666
      @brammer666 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Reptiles in general lack that part of the brain. It's a scientific fact. People however like to anthropomorphize their animals.

    I've never seen my crestie drinking standing water but I've also never seen him licking water after I've misted too. The shop I bought him from told me to feed him 2-3 crickets every time I replace his Pangea/repashy and I've seen him literally stalking them and he goes to the floor of his cage to hunt them because he knows that's where they hide. He doesn't particularly like being handled either but that's my fault, I've not spent enough time taming him. Most of these misconceptions in this video are addressed in a lot of the care sheets I've read and they debunk them tbh. The knowledge is getting better.

    I wouldn't go as far to say cresteds crave companionship however I always find my females sleeping together in the same log every single morning, even when I have groups of 3 - 4 females with multiple hides they all continue to hide together in different spots but always together. This has been seen over the +10 years (not only by myself but by several other large Canadian breeders who even state that geckos are much calmer when housed in groups of 5 when being raised, I have never tested that theory and usually raise in pairs with great social success) I've been raising / breeding them, that being said I have also seen aggression from a specific female only directed towards another specific female. I personally do believe there is some social interaction that helps with the geckos temperament, not sure if I would go as far as to say that they are social. Just some observations for crested enthusiasts :)

      I think it's a temperature thing they will stay in the same hide quite often I noticed that when our temps in their room was 87 degrees sometimes pushing 94/95 and I turned off their heaters oh but mine are Leos but I'm sure it may be a very similar situation but of course Leos heat from the bottom ( their bellies ) ;-) later that day they were all together in 1 hide I have 5 in one enclosure I'm either going to build a bigger one or keep the one their in, idk yet but their in I think it's close to a 40 long I've never actually measured it lol but I have to feed them 2 at a time so I know that they are eating a good amount of food per gecko because it gets to confusing trying to watch them all because I have 2 little ones that will snatch a bigger majority of the crickets before a cpl of my bigger ones get to eat even 3 or 4 lol sorry went off subject but anywho I decided to turn their heater bk on and now their in different places but for some reason I never see more than 1 in the moist hide therefore I think I've proven to at least myself that it is not that they want to snuggle it's because they want warmth ;-) ♥♥ all of my geckos have totally different personalities my first Leo named lahlah still don't like to be held and I've worked with her everyday or every other day for over 2 yrs but I get her out for a few minutes calm her and put her back and 1 out of the 4 that I bought together a few months ago wants out daily but after about an hour leah is ready to go bk in sometimes I have to get her bk out a little later, spoiled little girl lol another adult miss Goldie she's kinda skiddish too but however she has a regrown tail so it's hard telling what she's been through but I only keep her out for about 15 minutes I usually wait until she settles down before I put her bk a good way to train her to be calm for the most part and the 4th one is my little ginger named Freckles she is still very small and is an aggressive little eater and I call her my little raptor she's a speedy. little thing when it comes to catching her food lol but she's ok with coming out sometimes last is my sweet little Blanka the other little girl lol she and freckles are the only ones that you don't see sharing the hide with the others they both like the tube but Blanka is starting to enjoy coming out she likes to curl up in my hand most of the time and so does freckles but they are only about 3 inches long lol blanka is totally patternless all soft pink and she's called my little reptile yeah it's one of those situations as to where you would have to see them to understand but in all honesty they are getting familiar with my smell my voice and the fact that im feeding them not eating them but however I think they are very happy being left in their enclosure they would much rather be in then out for the most part sorry so long I get to into my conversations sometimes lol I could talk about reptiles all day long ♥♥♥ pssst I also have a 8 week old beardie that I just got on the 4th of July and she won't fall asleep in her house ( enclosure ) she has to be beside me covered up or on my chest way my hand on her or she'll pace all night until I get her out as soon as I get her out and put her against my chest she's out like a light once I get up make her all snug and comfy in her own bed she's right back up sooo I get her bk out make her comfy on this soft nitted hat cover her with a black silk blanky aka bandana give it about an hour then I have to pick up the whole little nest and lay her in her house she's out lights out and then im out until about 7am and she will sleep snug until I turn her lights on and even then she will stay asleep until she hears me talking she sleeps anywhere between 8 and 12 hrs wakes up basks for a couple hrs until she ready to come out and get breakfast then bk to basking another hour or so until she's ready for a nap she will want me to snuggle her for a nap and then it's play eat bath play until bedtime about 1030 PM same routine everyday ;-) ♥♥♥

    #4 is absolutely not true. I've had my crestie for two years, and got her as a hatchling, so she's been around me essentially her whole life. When I open her cage she will jump to my hand and stare at am and wiggle her tail until I pet her head with my finger. When someone new and unfamiliar holds her, even if her home tank is right next to her, she will either stare at me or try to jump to me. Reptiles aren't stupid. If you treat them with affection, they will like you in return.

  • @saintanthonygoodchild1288

    Misconception #11: "There are only 3 things geckos intelligently process (or however you claimed it): don't be eaten by predator, where's the next meal and drink, and 'so your place or mine?'" Once again, this is simply FALSE. This is an old view which stems from the old perspectives for rules of ethology for observation from in-the-field biologists of yore and with like-minded scientists, whom all did not (and still do not) believe in personifying animals. When describing animal behavior in your notes, never would you ever attach an emotion in we associate with human behavior to an animal. For instance if you were studying a family of macaques, you wouldn't note that one day you witnessed the family's dominating male commit infanticide because he was "angry and upset" that a female member's baby was not his. Nor would you be able to write something like "the saddened, distraught mother of the infant remained off to the side crying and grieving over her loss for two days."
    Fortunately for all species (the few we have left anyway), views have changed in which more modern and definitely more mindful scientists in the field, are not so stringent in the use of such describing terms. Jane Goodall is known for pushing back against the usage of emotions which began in her early years of chimpanzee studies and in her autobiography she expressed that chimps "demonstrate a range of emotions, use touch to comfort one another,..." and although chimps and reptiles are clearly different and the argument of how much so would be infinitesimal, David Attenborough is yet on record as describing many species of reptiles as "more caring and seemingly compassionate than that of their warm blooded counterparts" in his documentary "Life in Cold Blood," referenced while on the caiman mother and young segment. So you going to tell these two icons that this is simply not true? I dare you! You see, individuals whom remain so rigidly stern in their beliefs about anything are potentially dangerous to the field in which they hold such views. A good biologist or scientist knows that the fields of biology and science have to re-write the books and findings from time to time and that new discoveries which change and/or disprove old theories or common knowledge happens all the time. Just like the very species they study, the fields would not be able to evolve and we will never understand how things really work in the universe if we hold fast to such a dangerously narrow view. Perhaps ask yourself what is it that is so important to you about combatting arguments from the multitude as you describe of individual pet owners who insist the animals have feelings or desires other than what you describe? A good rule to govern anyone one of us is one in which you realize that if three or more people (and certainly groups of people) are telling you the same thing, then maybe it's time you stopped arguing because it's time to take a look at it. As an expert who is successful in being around many, many geckos and knowing the ins and outs of the trade (well done by the way, my hat is certainly off to you), when was the last time you spent actual, quality time with just one personal, special gecko of yours, or perhaps, reflected on the very first one you ever owned? I'm asking this because the industry we are so attached to sometimes causes us to be detached if you catch my drift. Nonetheless I agree with your other misconceptions and we do need to hear it straight from time to time so thank you, again, well done.

    I thought their main diet was fruit as studies have shown that they mainly eat insects when fruit isn’t as available or when breeding. There has been research on wild crested geckos that seems to suggest fruit makes 3/4 for their diet and insect are more an enrichment and opportunistic meal making 1/4 of their diet.
    Also it’s not friction it’s electromagnetic attraction (static).

  • @HummingLantern27

    Pretty sure friction has nothing to do with them sticking to walls aside from how every animal uses friction to move. They use London Dispersion Forces I believe (Van Der Waals).

    Honestly #6 was a relief to hear.
    My crestie was constantly a pain to hand feed when he was a baby (I was told to hand feed them forever or to at least hand feed until they learn to eat until he eats on his own). At this point, I specifically gutload his insects with what he needs and weekly have him drink a pipette full of calcium water to be extra sure he gets what he needs.

      One thing to note is that hand feeding your gecko can make them grow used to you faster - if they associate you with "the giant tree that gives me food", they will be less flighty. That's why I hand feed treats to my geckos - they know that the big scary ape brings waxworms and it's worth the risk. :D

    My 3 cresties drink from standing water, like to hang out under their coconut huts or in a toilet paper tube and don't want anything to do with live crickets - they're fine with their powdered food. One of them makes little peeping noises when I get him out of his tank. He's the most "laid-back" of the three; he is chill when I handle him and he "likes" sitting on things that are warm (my laptop, my hand, etc.). Cresties are awesome!

    I think the baby food thing also was due to when they first were brought in from the wild by the scientists, they didn't really know what to feed them, so they went with fruit baby food and the geckos survived until they managed to develop a proper gecko formula. There's an interview on TH-cam with the scientist who re-discovered them! i know this is a super old video, but just wanna say, i really enjoy these information videos u made!

    Question! I just recently got a baby crested gecko and I live in a basement. My room can get cool (not unbearable but definitely below 70). During the night I use a heater so the room stays about 75 but during the day while I'm gone my heater is off (fire hazard). Should I buy a heating floor pad for my created to keep her tank at a steady temp.
    Ps. During the day I leave a vitamin d light on but it's going through the glass so I'm not sure how much heat she actually gets from that.

    Hi Brian, thanks for a very informative video. I have been researching Crested Gecko husbandry. I have yet to buy one. I did wonder about some of the advice given even though it appeared to be the consensus. I was concerned about temperature as my living accomodation is upstairs and can get very hot in the height of summer for a few weeks. I did question the fruit only diet as fruit is obviously not available year round in a natural environment. I also doubted that they could be exclusively arborial. So thanks for clarifying and resolving my doubts.
    I am also wondering about very loud noise and vibration, for example fireworks and loud bangs. Will these be injurious to Geckos in general?. Its not a subject I have seen discussed anywhere.
    Faved and subscribed :-)

    • @AltitudeExotics
      @AltitudeExotics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Loud noises won't necessarily harm them however it can frighten them. I have had nights with extreme thunder storms cause dozens of geckos to drop their tails before.

    Sorry to be nitpicking, just thought i'd point out that the definition of polymorphism is not traits that don't follow mendelian genetics. It's the occurence of two or more morphs/alternate phenotypes in a population of a species, in this case referring to colors and patterns. As crested geckos display a large variety of colors and a few different patterns in the wild calling them polymorphic seems accurate. Colloquially it seems people use the term because there are a lot of genes in play, and a lot of variation in each morph, so they're not as easily defined as say ball python morphs.

    Hey, you need to get with the times bro. Animal behavior science is delving deeper and deeper into the animal psyche everyday. You cannot say with absolute certainty that gecko's don't enjoy our company, or the company of others. However, you could perform an extensive experiment to determine if, given the choice, these geckos will seek out each others company or avoid them. Or, seek out the company of a handler or avoid them. Then, and only then, after study and deliberation, could you say something like that with absolute certainty. Otherwise, it's just your opinion against theirs.

In certain months they will eat insects more than fruit and vice versa, this is evident by their poop. Also, baby food is acceptable to feed but only as a treat once in a while

    ermm number 10 is a misconception in itself. Isle of Pines in New Caledonia where the crested gecko lives is actually around 81-82 degrees in temperature, dropping only 1 or two degrees at night and with a relative humidity of about 80%. Dav Kaufman shows this in his videos here on you-tube when he goes there to look at the cresties in the wild. So if anything the misconception is that 70-78 degrees is the optimal temp.

    • @bulbasaurhimself8914
      @bulbasaurhimself8914 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok look at it this way, would you like it if you were living in 90 degrees? That's how hot Africa gets to sometimes, and thats where humans are from, the geckos live somewhere where it's sometimes 85 degrees, but they probably don't enjoy that, would you rather live in 90 degrees, or 75 degrees? Same with the gecko, and if the gecko is in temperatures higher than 85 degrees for too long they can have a heat stroke and die so don't risk it

      +Belac Lewis here I use the term in the way it's most commonly used in the crested community, which is that no crested morph follows mendelian genetics and no set rules apply to breeding and what the results will be. I know It's technically not the correct definition, but in the context of most of the crested world it applies.
      Similar to almost all morphs that are called Co-Dominate are actually incomplete dominate. However in the context of a conversation about ball pythons, co-dominate may be technically incorrect, but it is widely understood.

      The phenotype is closely related to the genetics. It's the genes that cause a certain phenotype.

    What is the most cheapest morph

      Presumably a flame and a "buckskin."
      It depends on what you mean cheap...
      :D Here are additional resources, I would still ask other breeders :

    Hey, I love your videos and their very helpful. I'm maybe getting a crested gecko but I'm like every other pet lover, I love affection. You said crested geckos don't show affection. Is their a reptile that does like a tegu. BUT NOT A TEGU. Basically what I'm asking is that is there a starter reptile that shows affection?

    I've got a crestie and he's gonna be a year here in a couple weeks and in that year he has only eaten bugs. He is just noe starting to eat fruit mix which I assume is due to our weather here. I've always gotten bashed for feeding him just bugs but he is gaining weight and is healthy so I don't see the problem.
    And I do notice he always stays towards the ground of his cage. Its a 29g not flipped though I'm gonna flip it soon and add several layers in it for different resting areas for him and them maybe get another crestie
    The one thing I disagree with is #4 and that's just with a bunch of personal experiences with reptiles and fish and it's just not something I'd like to get into at 2 am XD
    Over all amazing video! ^~^

    The temperature on New Caledonia is very often over 80F, sometimes even as high as 90F, so I don't see how can it be harmful to them if that's how hot their natural environment is.

      In their natural environment they have numerous opportunities to seek cooler places. They can hide inside a tree hallow, bury themselves in the leaf litter, or find another cooler place to rest. Just because they air temperature is that high doesn't mean the gecko is. In a relatively small cage they have no opportunity to do so. In a small cage with no where to escape or hide, their body temperature will match the ambient temperature.

    Is it necessary to dust crickets with calcium powder? I was told you don't have to because they are nocturnal animals.

      Yes, both but loading and dusting your crickets is extremely important.
