@@plbgreen You can put a piece of 20 or 30 ppi 1 1/2 inch filter sponge on the ends of the bamboo to block the ends and keep in the lava rocks.

Some soil on the roots is beneficial

Soil is not needed as the plants get all of their nutrients from the fish waste! 😉
