      It's time to put some fish back in there. It has been great. I moved everything to a 30 gallon tank (pump, filter, fish, plants) since 4 months now. I test the water regularly with test kit and at the store too. Always get the perfect results (without water changing of course).

    I used to be into fish back before my apartment complex fire in 2006 then I lost it all and never got back into it. So expensive and very time consuming though I had this one Comet goldfish that moved with me three times and lived to be 18-22 years old. I bought him as snake food (10 for a dollar) but just him to put in my tank.

    • @minhsmancave9448
      @minhsmancave9448  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Time consuming indeed if you don't have the good setup. Before my aquaponic filter box, it was tiring and messy with cleaning and water changing. But now, I don't need to worry about the water quality anymore. I took the water to test at the store a few times and the level of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are always good even with big goldfishes. Really a peace of mind.

      @@minhsmancave9448 Yeah, I am very pleased to see that level you achieved and best of all the work isn't twice a week to get to that level either (nor the costs of constant filter replacing).

    Very nice, essentially a diy over the tank sump. I love that you made absolutely everything yourself. BTW a much easier way to sterilize soil is to microwave it.

  • @andrewcarter2741
    @andrewcarter2741 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Really like the DIY experimental approach. I was baffled by the soil, bleach, multiple water changes and dechlorination bit though! Perhaps if you need to sterilise the soil, put it in a baking tray and in the over for an hour or two? Love the aquaponic filter build. Thanks for posting!

    • @minhsmancave9448
      @minhsmancave9448  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, many people were also horrified by the bleach. But I did wash the soil thoroughly and the fish were fine, gave birth to many generations till now. I must agree that there are simple ways to do it as you suggested. But I did what I can think of at that time (I use the approach of bleaching aquatic plants to prevent diseases when buying from internet). That filter looked nice and worked well for a period of time, but it does get clogged. I have been prototyping new designs and finally came up with one that eliminate many drawbacks of traditional aquatics systems, especially for fish tanks. I'm trying to make it a commercialized product and hopefully can put it on the market before the end of this year.

I will bring more fishes home soon once the bacterias arefully developed to convert ammonia to nitrate. It might take up to 6 weeks, but that should be fine since I can just leave the water cycling.

    Hi Minh! How are you doing my friend? Great fish tank. A brother of mine has a huge one and it takes him hours a week to clean it. I'll send him this video. The acrylic parts replace usual glass parts. I can't help wondering if glass was not a cheaper option.
    (FR) Salut mon ami! Soothing... Allez porte-toi bien et étonne-nous encore mon ami! Prends soin de tes proches. On est presque au bout du covid.

      I thought about glass too but it's harder for me to cut it to sizes. The price probably not much different. If your brother wanted to make similar setup, tell him to wait a bit, I already think of a new, improved version of this filter.
      Salut,ça va bien ? Je suis vraiment content avec le choix d'utiliser de terre,ça aide vraiment les plants à grandir. Et maintenant, sans le nettoyage, il y a pas grand chose à faire à part de regarder les poissons.

    Great! I'm looking into doing something like this as well. I'm thinking you may want to include an air stone in the tropical fish tank to make sure the plants roots can get enough oxygen. Some plants will drown unless there is enough oxygen in the water. Have you had any trouble with solids/fish waste ending up in your grow bed?

    • @minhsmancave9448
      @minhsmancave9448  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the water splashing down stirs enough oxygen in there because I haven’t had any problem with the aquatic plants growth. They grew so fast that I had to get rid off some. The fish waste mixed with the soil and actually become plant food. In overall, I’m happy with the setup. I moved the fish to a bigger tank and did exactly the same setup, it has been 4 months and water quality is still perfect. Got many baby fish since they gave birth

    Could you tell me what water pump you used to pipe water to the filtration unit.
    I am really interested in this as my girls got me interested in setting up an aquarium about a month ago, and I don't want to spend a heap of money on a filter system, when I believe it can be done naturally.
    I have the tank, soil, rocks, etc. Just need to the filter system and fish.

      The pump I used is 160 gallons per hour. But that's overkilled. I think 60 to 90 gph will be more than enough. I have developed a much better system for commercialization but it might take a few month to be available on the market. In that system, I use 60gph pump for 10gal tank and it is working great.

    Oh that’s too small for fishes . That’s like putting someone in a cage of 3 feet by 3 feet in a forest . Yeah , air is pure , but it is a bad cage still . Take them out , give them enough space to enjoy !

      Yes, washed throughly. Never had any problem with it. But as many other said, boiling or microwave the soil might be easier.

    I DIDNT SEE ANYONE ASK HOW YOU KEEP IT CRYSTAL CLEAR. THATS EASY....JUST SCRUB IT CLEAN, ADD NEW WATER AND START THE CAMERA FOR THE VIDEO. EACH ONE OF THOSE GOLDFISH NEED ALL THE WATER IN THAT "AQUARIUM"...EACH!! THATS JUST CRUEL.

      I'm sure that's how you do it. Open your mind a little and try the setup to see what I did was true.

    Why on earth would you BLEACH (!!!) the water and soil you want to keep fish in??

    • @minhsmancave9448
      @minhsmancave9448  ปีที่แล้ว

      To kill bacteria, have you heard of them?

    • @MightyMirk
      @MightyMirk ปีที่แล้ว

      @@minhsmancave9448 I've heard about bacteria... beneficial bacteria you try to establish in your aquarium to take care of the nitrogen cycle. I've heard about dechlorinating your tab water if necessary depending on where you live. There is no chlorine in my tap water luckily. But I've never seen or heard about someone bleaching his setup.
      If there is something so terribly wrong with your water or soil that you have to bleach it, you'd probably beter not use it... 🤔

    • @minhsmancave9448
      @minhsmancave9448  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you watch the video closely, the soil was from my garden. I didn't know what type of bacteria in there and there might be parasites, etc. I made sure to remove them all. Now I've learned that there are easier ways to do it such as baking, boiling or microwaving. I did what I can think of at the time and washed of the bleach many times, I also added water dechlorinator so the water was safe and my fish have been thriving. Both my mollies and guppies sprawned and I had to gave them to the fish store (more than 100 of them).
      The beneficial bacteria will grow when you have ammonia in the water naturally or by adding with bottled bacteria bought from the store. I didn't because my fish was small and I didn't over feed them.

      Yes, bleach. Worked great for disinfecting the dirty garden soil.

    • @Renaissancecreative50
      @Renaissancecreative50 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve read in books relating to building vegetable garden beds, not too add chemical treated wood or paint of any kind because of the chemicals leaching into the soil and vegetables. Since bleach is toxic and the paint that you used, I would suspect cancerous chemicals in the edible plants you eat and if someone were growing edible fish which is a goal of aquaponics systems, the bleach would leach into the edible fish too. Can you address this health threat, because when someone in your family or a family of someone watching and using your techniques is dying of cancer, it’s not so great what you’re teaching people?

    • @minhsmancave9448
      @minhsmancave9448  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your concerns. I hoped that you watched through the video and saw how I addressed the health threat you mentioned. I hoped that you understand the concept of dilution and concentration. My first bleached water was 20% concentration on bleach. I scooped out the water, let’s say I left 10% left, then I filled the tank up, now, the water is 2% bleach. Next water rinse the concentration is 0.2%. I did that 5 times, so I had 0.0002% bleach in the water. Then I added the dechlorinator to neutralize the bleach. Then I change the water another time and add another dose of dechlorinator. If you have more doubts, asked other chemists if I did the right thing. I understand the garden bed issue because the paint or chemicals stay there without being diluted or washed. But I thought about this for long time and I didn’t teach people a dangerous thing.
