Ive been getting a lot of comments about stadiums that are far, just to clarify this video is about Arenas and not stadiums.
@David Lim Those can hold full field sports like football, soccer, baseball, etc... and have a capacity well over 25,000. Arenas usually have a capacity around 20,000 but generally up to 25,000 and are meant only for basketball, hockey, circus events, and other primarily indoor events.
Actually, the FLA Live Arena IS close to populous areas; many municipalities in Broward County are OFF the coast. Davie, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Sunrise (where the arena is located) among a host of other "stand-alone' suburbs are within 15 minutes from the arena. The 'swamp plains' are the Everglades, which is a protected area which is adjacent to the developed land.

Nassau Coliseum was put there pretty much to get the Long Island market and not the NYC market. May sound weird to someone not from the area, but Long Island was purpose built up as a suburb. There is a definite cut off from NYC... Yes, Brooklyn (Kings County) and Queens are Long Island, but don't tell that to anyone from Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Those are the outer boros of NYC! There was major resentment when the Islanders moved to Brooklyn for those years.
Another oddly placed arena: The Meadowlands/Brendan J. Byrne/Continental Airlines Arena/Izod Center. Not really in the middle of nowhere, but not downtown Newark or one of the Oranges or anywhere bigger. Until the Super Bowl there wasn't much public transportation to speak of to the Arena (or the entire complex). Nor was there anything to do once the game was over. You had to drive out to do anything. Nor is it like between New York and Philadelphia to split the market or whatever. Though it was the only NJ stop for a lot of the major events until the Prudential Center was built in Newark. Now that is the place for NJ events and for people who don't live close, it's possibly worse!
Honorable mention also goes to the Capital Center in Landover, MD for Washington DC teams. It was just outside the Beltway on the far east side (east of where FedEx Field is now).
When Capital Centre first opened, media outlets made its exact location so confusing by saying it was Largo, MD. It took them quite some time to identify it as Landover.
Nassau was placed well for the market that was being established for the Isles. They have a more suburban fanbase, so I don't think that Nassau should've been in this video. The Isles' time in Brooklyn was a fiasco due to people on "true" Long Island having to go take that long trek to Brooklyn (that's even in good traffic) and the Barclays Center wasn't built to accommodate hockey (Why?!) and the hockey setup there is one of the ugliest I've ever seen.
@marcus813 The Barclay's Center was purpose built to attract the New Jersey Nets back to New York. They were originally the New York Nets when they were established in the ABA, even though their first home was in Teaneck, NJ. They were meant to be a New York squad and were put into the Nassau Coliseum after one year. They broke ground in 2010 for the single major purpose Arena. The Islanders only were in the picture after many failed attempts to either renovate or make a new Nassau Coliseum. The Coyotes had the same problem originally as well... trying to fit hockey into a basketball arena doesn't work well.
The Islanders were a purpose expansion to keep the WHA out of Long Island since the league wanted a NY area team.
@@mrmoose6619 What's now the Footprint Center is in an ideal location, but the obstructed views for hockey games hurt the Coyotes a ton. With a hockey-friendly arena anywhere from Downtown Phoenix on east, they would be in much better shape.
The Meadowlands Arena was perfect for the Devils, who, similar to the Islanders, marketed themselves as a suburban, family-oriented team (lots of weekend afternoon games with giveaways for kids).
What funny about the placement, though - you have to take exit 16W off the New Jersey Turnpike, but even Devils players admitted to taking wrong turns to get there after years on the team.
The Palace was an absolute nightmare to get to. If you lived in the western suburbs of Detroit, there wasn’t a good way to there either! Especially in the winter!
Ottawa's Canadian Tire Centre imitated The Palace in both the good ways (lots of mid-level suites, club seats and space) and the bad ways (too far from the core of the big city).
Imagine driving to The Palace from downriver, especially in the winter....💩
@UncleMikeNJ it was maybe 5 minutes from the Silverdome and definitely had the same issues. The difference is that maybe 8-10 football games on weekends didn’t make it a big deal.
I lived 5 minutes from the Panthers arena. There’s an outlet mall across the street. Most people park there for free. Sunrise tried to institute a fee to walk across the street. Some local lawyer immediately filed suit and they rescinded.

I was living in Ottawa when the CTC (then called the Palladium) was being built so I can speak on this: the arena was built WAY out in Kanata because the National Capital Region (NCR) board which handles regional land use planning issues, would not allow the Sens to redevelop the land where the 67s Junior Team and the Ottawa Rough Riders (now Redblacks) play. That land was right on Bank Street in the Glebe. Not quite downtown, but on a main thoroughfare. At any rate, the only plot of land the NCR would allow for development that big abc at a price the Sens could pay was out in Kanata where the land was all but free. The original plan had called for a ton of commercial and mixed use residential but that never happened-not because of zoning issues either but because of greed. Had the Sens met those thresholds, they would have been on the hook for the cost of another highway interchange. Instead, they let traffic become a nightmare to the point where the city paid for it and now getting out of the lot after a game can easily take 30-45 minutes

I use to be near the ctc and it would still take more than 25 minutes for me to get to games because of traffic and that's after i already get on the highway
Being in Kanata (since annexed by Ottawa, but is still effectively a distant suburban area) combined with bad management from Eugene Melnyk caused the attendance to all but crater pre-pandemic. I hope the Sens can get space for an arena in another part of Ottawa because staying at the CTC isn't sustainable in the long run.
Actually you could put two stadiums and arena in Michigan the silver dome and the palace the both of them were about 5 miles away from each other. The pistons actually played at the Silverdome before they went to the palace.

The hockey experience in Ottawa is brutal… it’s a hockey city, but no one goes to the games because it’s so far away. The people who do go to the games have to wait a good 45 minutes just to get out of the parking lot, so you’ll see many fans leaving with 10 minutes left in the 3rd period. Ottawa deserves better.
Also because the Senators have a shit owner (Eugene Melnyk). Two Senators fans were kicked out for sporting signs suggesting that the Senators keep Erik Karlsson and get rid of Eugene Melnyk. A third fan was also ejected for intervention and standing up for the two fans being ejected. It's obviously not a very good fan experience compared to the pre-Melnyk era.
I heard that getting to the Canadian Tire Centre is a pain in the ass to get to by both personal vehicle and public transit. I hope the Sens can move closer to Ottawa's core.
@@marcus813 they have shuttle buses, but the traffic is backed up on the Queensway. This isn't the case anymore because allegedly fans are not wanting to renew their season tickets with Melnyk still as the owner, and the team's poor play has been a factor too. It's great the Senators brought back their old logo, but that's a marketing trend to sell merchandise, but not to get fans into the stands. Once the Senators have a new owner, which the city of Ottawa has been very vocal about the NHL team will continue to lose support meaning a potential relocation to either Kansas City, Houston, or Quebec City. Ottawa will probably get an AHL or ECHL team in return, which may get some fan interest.

Sadly, instead paying of building a new Arena in Baltimore to replace Royal Farms, they decided to renovate it. More "Lipstick on a Pig".
You missed Gila River Arena in Glendale, AZ..... It's at the opposite end of where the major hockey fan base is in that town, and the rush hour and parking there deters a lot of fans as well. (The Arizona Coyotes will no longer be playing there after this season.)
Now that you mention it, it should've been mentioned in the place where Nassau was mentioned. Nassau had no business being on this video. I've never even been west of Kansas and I know that having that arena in the West Valley was a bad idea. People in places such as Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe (lots of hockey fans on their side of the Valley) don't wanna get through all that rush hour traffic to go all the way across the Valley on a weeknight. So many people don't understand that.
Saw my first arena show at "Canadian Tire" Centre. Tragically Hip, Nov 1996. It was called the "Corel" Centre back then. It's definitely not downtown!
I used to live in Ottawa in the 1990's before relocating to Bermuda 🇧🇲 and I would take OC Transpo to get to the Corel Centre. It helped that I lived downtown so easy to get to a bus from Rideau Street or Mackenzie King Bridge
I love where FLA arena is located. Keep in mind things really turn to swamp south of Miami. Being in Fort Lauderdale you can get to it within an hour from west Palm. It's not far if you live in fort Lauderdale and you can also get to it within an hour in Miami. Coming from west palm to a heat game is tough especially with rush hour in Miami. It's easier going north than south.
Also the people going to the games don’t live downtown, they live in the suburbs out west 😭😭😭

@@thechristurner2568 the Panthers haven't won a round since 96. It's better than the marlin's when it comes to attendance. It's easier going north than south on 95 at rush hour. Meaning it will take you similar time with less stress.
@@nathanjw940 Agreed, hence why I take the Metrorail and shuttle to Loan Depot Park and the Metrorail and Metromover to FTX Arena. I just Park at Dadeland north for $4.50, and spend a few bucks on a metro day pass.

The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum was placed right in the heart of suburbia with millions of residents surrounding it. The location is good for Long Islanders only. But no public transit made it inaccessible for NYC residents. The Nassau Coliseum spot is not convenient for NYC Northern suburbs. If you're coming from NJ suburban region you'll have to get through NYC traffic gridlock.
MSG really is the most accessible location possible. The newer Prudential Center and UBS Arena are closer to the City and have multiple public transit options.
And with the lack of public transport, traffic was also tough to deal with.
No public transit? Take the LIRR to hempstead and switch to the NICE bus and it got you there. Difficult but not the worse mass transport to a venue
Nassau Coliseum was meant for long Island to enjoy sports, special events and concerts without having to travel to New York city or New Jersey. It served pretty much Nassau and Suffolk counties, but folks from Queens and Brooklyn would drive along the parkways to get there, or ride the long Island railroad to the Mineola train station and take a shuttle bus to the Coliseum. It may sound inconvenient but the acoustics of the building were well worth it.
Your first four are spot-on. Nassau Coliseum is debatable, though as one who has been stuck in Chicago for most of my life, was at the mercy of maps that didn't even show where Uniondale is located in the pre-internet days. Eventually discovered that Uniondale is actually in Hempstead and that the Coliseum was surrounded by Hofstra University, Nassau Community College and Mitchel Field.
I went to a few Cavs games when they played at the Richfield Coliseum. I lived in Warren, Ohio, which was about an hour's drive to the arena all on single lane backroads. Yeah, it was a complete headache getting in and getting out of that place! After being late for the first couple games i went to because of the damn traffic, i learned that to get to a 7:30 game and be there on time for the tipoff, i had to actually leave my home by 5:30-6:00. It was a great arena, just in the wrong place!!
If you lived in Warren you could have taken I-80. Very easy to get to. Downtown Cleveland is much farther away from Warren than Richfield is.

The only ones I knew were on this list were Canadian Tire Centre and Nassau Colisuem. Forgot that The Palace was way out there. Cool to learn about the others. Anyways, keep up the good work! I love this channel.
You forgot to mention the Capital Centre/US Airways arena that was 15 miles away from downtown DC. The place was a nightmare to get to and leave after the game and you HAD to drive to get there at the time NO ALTERNATIVE!!! 😔. Thoughts?
Best part was when Metro extended to Largo Town Center, where the arena was located. Of course the arena was demolished for two years before the metro extension 😂

The location discouraged any fan support from Northern Virginia suburbs. Primary fan base was PG and Montgomery Counties. It was a joke that Georgetown basketball played home games there for lack of better options.
@@jimread412 Hoyas men's hoops had outgrown tiny McDonough Gym, so I understand why they played at the then-Capital Centre, but I didn't know the access to the latter venue was so awful. Thank goodness they, the Capitals and now-Wizards are in DC now.

Most of Metro Detroit's population lives north of 8 mile and has for a while. Downtown Detroit is actually a much less centrally located place for an arena than Auburn Hills/Pontiac.
FedEx field in landover deserved at least an honorable mention but other than that it’s a solid list

The Coliseum would have had at least 10 more years, maybe even lasted as long as Joe Louis Arena if it was built downtown . The Barons may have actually survived too

I grew up on Long Island, right across the street from the coliseum. Great location for me. The only issue was people parking on my street not wanting to pay to park.

I live in metro Detroit. The Palace of Auburn Hills opened in 1988. Critically acclaimed as state of the art to its last days as home of the NBA Pistons, its location was far too favorable to Detroit’s northern suburbs. It discounted the city , the eastern suburbs, the western suburbs and especially the southern suburbs. The blogger is correct , after you pass this arena in a northbound direction, there is very little left of Detroit’s northern metro boundaries, and you very quickly hit the rural rolling hills that account for approximately 25 miles preceding the Flint area. The downtown Detroit area used now by both the Pistons and the NHL Red Wings, is centrally located to all of the Detroit area. What is sad that Auburn Hills arena was a great venue. Fan friendly and very attractive. It was no where close to being obsolete. What a waste of architectural resources.

Being from Ottawa, i’m pretty sure the whole city would definitely not allow the Sens to relocate. Everyone has been pushing hard for a new arena, but since Melnyk is in control, doesn’t seem like that’s happening anytime soon. The attendance is not because the Sens are trash, it’s the location of the arena which makes it horrible.

As a Detroiter I can attest to how horrible the drive to The Palace was. When there was ANY traffic it was over an hour to get there from anywhere in Wayne County west of Detroit
The only reason Nassau Coliseum was built/put out there was because they were the only 2nd tier New York professional team who refused to be named anything ending with " ets ". So that was their punishment. The Jets, Mets, and Nets caved though.
*sighs* thanks for mentioning FLA live arena, I mean despite the Panthers on a roar, it's ridiculous to even place the arena in sunrise Florida, near a mall no less.
This video is the problem when people use maps instead of actually traveling to locations or doing some research before making videos The NY Islanders are called the Islanders because they represent Long Island not Manhattan and Nassau Coliseum was built where it was for that reason. Now the Panthers Arena it is located in the Western Suburbs of Broward County, you would have gone a little further you would have saw a huge development and population to the east of the Arena, but you cannot cross the Sawgrass Expry, the NHL insisted the Arena be located in Broward County
Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky is the best Arena in America! It’s being remodeled but it’s located exactly downtown and the seating height is perfect even the Nosebleed is not high at all.

There is a Stadium for the University of Wisconsin Bagers Hockey and Basketball new since late 1990's Kol's Center that is not in the furthest place but put in the worst part of Madison, they just put it in the most congested part of town so getting there is impossible if the bus service in winter snow is slow as it is only about 3--5 miles from Campus but near some major bus routes. It is hard to tell distance campus is all over in one section. UW Madison is a Big School being about 3 miles from one end to the other with a few businesses, like Forever Bagels making its Bagels in-between.
The metropolitan sports center (or met center) in Bloomington Minnesota is an honourable mention.
I saw SO many concerts at Richfield Coliseum. That place was so loud.

Being from Detroit, The Palace of Auburn Hills was a hell of a drive lol a good half hour.. & traffic leaving out was horrific
When it's equal in travel time from Bay City and Detroit, you know the Palace is way out there.

Yeah, the Richfield Coliseum. When they built it, the said it was "within an hour's drive of 6 million people". The problem was that it was an hour's drive for EVERY ONE of them. Too bad because it was a great building.

The Nassau Coliseum was built on Long Island for Long Islanders. It's quite easy to get to, given it's proximity to 3 major east/west highways and 1 major north/south highway. Usually traveling acts will perform in NYC to reach that market, then come out to Long Island and play the Coliseum.
With the opening of the UBS arena though, it wont be long before the building is razed and the land sold off for more shopping centers.
As far as Islanders fandom. Long Island is about 50/50 between them and the Rangers. Unless ,you're in the immediate Uniondale Hempstead area.

Actually you forgot one thing about FLA LIVE Arena. It's next door to Sawgrass Mills Mall. One of the biggest malls in Florida. But from experience, it's a great arena. Plenty of parking, Sawgrass Mills is next door. Tampa's arena is worse. The parking is hell, and very cluttered.
Why anyone would have an Arena/Stadium in the city of St. Louis is beyond me. Car jacking and car break ins are a daily thing...
Yea here in Detroit The Palace was an amazing state of the art arena. Biggest NBA arena in the country and held record for most sellouts but I remember driving to my first Pistons game as a kid back in 2007 from Grand Rapids where I live and was driving past farms and trees and suddenly we’re at the arena. Drove there another time from downtown Detroit and it is like 40 minutes away. Loved the arena but don’t know why they didn’t build it in downtown. Now the Chicago Bears (my team) want to move 45 minutes outside of Chicago and are making a similar mistake building so far away.
The reason that the Pontiac Silverdome and the Palace at Auburn Hills were placed where they are was due to the fact that Michigan has nearly 10 million residents and they were trying to appeal to the outstate market. During the late 70s to late 80s it was a very lean time in Detroit and to help support the teams it took 1-2 hours off the travel time for outstate fans to attend a game.
The NY Islanders base is definitely in Long Island. They were briefly in Brooklyn with the opening of the Barclay Center, but that base was not there on a regular basis so they moved back to the Coliseum. As of this season, they moved to the new UBS Arena in Elmont, Long Island, a much more transit-friendly area of the Island.
The Elmont NY location has now made it really easy for folks from Westchester and Western CT to get there by car as well. When the LIRR station is completed at Grand Central, there will be an easy connection at Grand Central for people living in Westchester to get to LI.
Kemper Arena in Kansas City wasn't that far from the downtown and had an impressive 19,500 capacity, but it wasn't the most lively area and was replaced with the Sprint Center in 2007, which is in the heart of the downtown entertainment district.
Saw the title and immediately thought "the Richfield Coliseum is going to be one of them".
Was not disappointed. 🙂
The Nassau Coliseum serves the fans in Nassau and Suffolk County New York. The total population of the two counties is about 3 million. More than enough to justify the arena for concerts. However the Islanders just have moved to a new arena called Barclays near the Queens line but still most fans will come from Nassau and Suffolk County. Fans from New York City follow the Rangers while fans from Long Island follow the Islanders.

You totally missed on Nassau Coliseum. Fan base is NOT New York City. It’s all Nassau County and Suffolk County, and some Queens. Queens is like 10 minutes away. When the Isles moved to Brooklyn, the fans on the Island didn’t go, and they had no local base. The new UBS arena is on the Queens Nassau border, and that location doesn’t have much parking, so even THAT’S a worse location than the Coliseum.

As an Islanders fan who lives in New Jersey I can personally attest to the fact that driving to Uniondale was often a bumper to bumper nightmare. Thankfully the team has moved to UBS Arena in Belmont Park. It’s much closer than before plus there are mass transit options now I didn’t have before.
Better than that time for a few years at Barclays Center with the crappy sightlines.

Used to go to Atlanta Hawks games late 80's. Would take MARTA from the Burbs to Downtown right inside the OMNI. No fuss, no muss.
The State Farm Arena is located exactly where the OMNI used to be.
The Islanders weren’t a City team. They ere where they needed to be. You lost me with that one. 15 minutes for me to get there.
They were always intended to be a suburban club. That's why the move to Barclays made no sense and that's not even getting into Barclays' sorry hockey setup.
Nassau coliseum was a perfect location Uniondale is mid island not the boom docks and close to the highway it’s about a 25 min drive to Queens and 45 min to midtown Manhattan.
Nassau Coliseum was pretty well-placed geographically, but would've been better if it were closer to the LIRR.
The Florida Panthers has one of the best NHL arenas in terms of amenities. Few people go to games due to the hardship of traffic.
Since I moved to Sourh Florida, I went to numerous games and seen many empty seats.
It’s probably time for an arena closer to Fort Lauderdale or Miami.

Almost all the arenas on your list got placed where they are with the assumption that the area growth would catch the arena.
Ottawa’s issue is the same as Richfield Coliseum’s (an arena way ahead of its time) - great arena, way the heck out there with one large highway to get there.
FLA Live Arena actually has been joined by a few residential high rises and other condo communities within a short walk. And there actually already were several residential developments just east of the arena. It’s an hour from downtown Miami at evening rush hour. The rest of time, it’s 35 minutes. From downtown Fort Lauderdale, 20 minutes outside of rush hour. It was built out there because then-Panthers owner H. Wayne Huizenga is a Broward guy and figured what they’d lose in fans from Miami-Dade, they’d make up for in fans from Broward and Palm Beach happy they didn’t have to drive all the way down to Miami Arena.
But the Broward and Palm Beach fans complained it was too west. Besides, they were used to schlepping down to Miami Arena, even if they were bitching all the way. The Palm Beach and Broward pickup wasn’t what they expected. 15 months after FLA Live opened, the Heat’s new arena opened in downtown Miami. The loss of 305 fans was greater than the Panthers anticipated as some ditched the Panthers for the closer Heat.
The NYI in Brooklyn was actually the worst located arena. The NYI were meant to be a suburban team, so not truly a NYC team. When they moved to Brooklyn, the fan base collapsed. It was brutal to hear how bored NYI 'fans' were for their team. Moving back to the Island was a great move by NYI. Attendance went up and the true fans of NYI got their team back. A Brown's fan can understand a greedy owners' betrayal better than most.
Amalie Arena where the lightning are, same town as the Rays but way better in attendance but close to same success.
Richfield was the reason the WHA Crusaders went under. They were very successful in the Arena.

Glendale Arena (or whatever they call the Arizona Coyotes Arena these days). Terrible location on the west side of town. A good 30-60 minute drive from almost any part of the valley depending on where you're coming from. And the majority of the hockey fan base is in the Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler area (the east valley) not the west valley. That location works great for the Cardinals, but nobody wants to drive across town during rush hour on a weeknight to see a hockey game

Vancouver picked a good location and honestly maybe TOO good because there are an infinite amount of condos around BC Place and Rodgers Arena with like no parking remotely close, and if you transit its terrible trying to get home and a few times a year the possibility of them both having games which is a nightmare, 3 teams sharing 2 stadiums which both frequently have concerts aswell.
Eh. Drove up from Portland when the Timbers played at BC Place in April while the Canucks hosted San Jose. Found parking a few blocks away, not far from Robson. SkyTrain is awesome for keeping parking issues there to a minimum… and frankly, I pay more to park a similar distance from Providence Park in Portland.
You couldn't be more wrong about the Richfield Coliseum. Because of it's location, near two major highways, it was easy to get in and out of. It's location between Cleveland and Akron made it easy for the Cavs to draw from both cities. It was also a fantastic venue for its day. You clearly weren't even born when thee Coliseum was around. I-271 and I-77 as well as Route 8 are directly connected to the location.
I live in the area and every account from people that went there was it was a pain to get out of, just like blossom is today
I hate arenas that are remotely far. There's usually no or very limited public transportation, and traffic is horrible after an event.
Good list...the coliseum still stands and was actually rebuilt as a smaller venue for concerts and family shows of course their first show was the last ever performance of Ringling bros Circus so we will see how well that goes especially with a new arena being built on the queens County line

But its over an hour from ANY major CT town
1.5 from Bridgeport or Hartford 2 hours from Greenwich and 1 hour from New haven
While it worked as a day trip pre covid we will see with online gambling taking hold if this is sustainable for even concerts and lower league sports (they already moved their lax team to albany)
Ill add the late Meadowlands arena ironically for being too close to new york...15 mins from Manhattan in a middle of nowhere meant sellouts of all knick or ranger fans and even when winning fan bases of fairvweather fans

Really can't agree with Nassau Coliseum. The arena was more for the Long Island market than NYC. It is located in central Nassau County, right in the core of the market, while still being relatively close to Queens (less than 10 miles from the Queens line)
Maybe the Florida Panthers arena is in that location because that's where a lot of snowbirds from Canada reside during the winter. Just a guess.
Wayne Hyuzinga named the Panthers and Marlins Florida because he was from Ft Lauderdale and wanted the teams to be for both Miami and Ft Lauderdale. I think on paper it made sense to put the baseball team where the latin population is and the hockey team where the rich white population is...but sadly it looks like neither team has been very successful attendance wise lol. I'd love for the Panthers to move to the Amway Center in Orlando, while they would be a lot closer to the Lightning, its too much of a chore for people in Orlando to drive to Tampa for a hockey game and Orlando is one fastest growing cities in the USA.
No! Wrong, never happening! The Panthers will never move to Orlando. Two World Series titles for the Fish, and a potential Stanley Cup run for the Panthers. The Panthers this season are one of the top home records in the NHL! It's worth the hour drive. Plus Orlando is home of the Solar Bears, a lightning affiliate.

Where is said map for that Ottawa arena? In fact having a map with a pin showing where each one of these is located; 5 individual maps, would have made for great slides in your video. I like references like that Shown instead of just Told. A lot of other people probably would agree. Also put captions at the bottom of your videos at the beginning of each section that include the names, locations, capacities, year built, etc. etc. Information is better seen And heard. So your qualifications for the "worst location" seems to be anything outside the downtown core? Downtown stadiums have horrid traffic, horrid parking, horridly priced parking etc. Try getting in our out out of downtown Seattle for Seahawks game and then tell me about "worst located arenas" again.
No. Simply no.
Being downtown usually means a fair percentage of fans will take transit. That relieves a good amount of pressure.
My favorite example: even though Arco / Sleep Train Arena was close to the I-5 / I-80 interchange about 6 miles north of downtown Sacramento, it still took 45 minutes to get out of the parking lot (even on nights I loitered after the game). It’s now considerably better downtown at Golden1 (which is a rather nice facility and helps you forget that the, um, “success” of the Kings has an effect on the atmosphere).
Now, if you frequented Seattle before their light rail was established, that was an issue after Seahawks games as well as anything at the Coliseum. Transit helps.

Correction NJ Devils isn't NYC team! NY Rangers is NYC and Islanders are from Long Island.
He doesn't get it. Although all three teams are in the NYC area, each carved out a space for its fans. The Islanders are for L.I., The Devils are for Jersey, and the Rangers own the city. The Rangers have a fanbase that extends into the Islanders and Devils market because they have been around long before the other two started playing local hockey.

San Antonio’s AT&T Center is in a shithole that in its 20 years of existence, has not developed a fucking thing around it to make for a decent experience. No food establishments, no grocery stores, no coffee shops, NOTHING.
I always opt to trek all the way out to Houston, Austin, or DFW for live events instead, even though it means dealing with their bullshit traffic too.
AT&T Center is next door to Freeman Coliseum, which has existed for 60 years, but I agree there's not much around the complex.
