A dæmon is a persons soul desperate from the body and a childs can change form as they arent settled as person yet. stealthbeatle It could be the size of an actual t-Rex, could be different. The form is based on personality, not convenience. One character had a dolphin for a daemon; and he could never go far from water.
The implication is a daemon cannot be bigger than the person. The same applies for daemons that are still in child form. They will inevitably be smaller and weaker than an "adult." I think Asriel's snow leopard daemon is the biggest we see if I'm remembering correctly, other than the Tartar's wolves. But forms are based on personality traits and emotions instead of whatever you or they want, so Pan's changing here is likely more based on emotional reaction than anything. Daemon's are literally a sentient soul living outside the person's body.
I know this is random, but given to the context of Dæmons, I feel like mine would be a Hummingbird. I don't know why, I just feel like it... *would.* Or if not, then some shy animal that represents bookworms since that moi.
Hmm.. I don’t know... I’m not loving the portrayal of Lyra so far. The mood is just so different from how it is in the book. Not just Lyra, but Ms Coulter too. In the book she seemed icy and scary, here she just seems crazy and a bit unsure of herself.
Don't worry, Lyra and Pantalaimon soon got their revenge on Marisa Coulter in Lord Boreal's house in Will's World, and Coulter was the one suffering then!
I loved the movie and the tv show but i never read the books. In this situation in both the show and the movie it seems that Pan should have turned into something much larger than the monkey. Like lord asriels snow leopard. But why doesn’t he. Lyra is still young and he can clearly still change so he couldn’t have settled. So wtf
It's implied in the books that children's daemons have can have limitations for how big they can grow when they shapeshift-they're not always full sized. Additionally, daemons are reflections of their humans' emotional state! If Lyra is scared/intimidated/distressed like she is in this scene, then so is Pan-and that affects what he is able to change into in the moment.
Do the deamons not feel pain? I get that Mrs coulter is not feeling pain because she's been discounted to her deamon or what ever which allows it to move freely and be away from her but the deamon it's self seems to not react to Pan bitting and scratching it and, I haven't read the book only seen the movie
Daemons do feel pain. When Pan is in pain, so is Lyra and it usually goes vice versa as well. Remember, Lyra was crying out "You're hurting us!!!" meaning both her and Pan are hurting and feeling pain when the monkey attacked Pan
I am confused, dæmons can change to whatever they want right? At least until their human gets to a certain age. Well, Lyra is still young so why didn't Pan just turn into something that could have destroyed the monkey, like a wolf or tiger?
He probably could, but Pan would only attack her dæmon if he really intended to destroy it. So we could take this as Lyra and Pan not really wanting to hurt Mrs Coulter/her dæmon, only get away from them. I think it’s more like a battle of their minds, not just who can have the biggest dæmon. Because Mrs Coulter is cold-hearted she is able to attack Lyra and Pan, and because they are more kind-hearted, they can’t win in a fight against her.
While a child’s Dæmon can change it’s shape, a lot of the time that shape is a reflection of what the child is feeling mentally and emotionally. They can change into specific forms for specific purposes, but that requires conscious thought. Because they weren’t expecting to be attacked, Pan can’t really control which form he’s using because he’s torn by Lyra’s rage and fear, and eventually the fear wins out, which leaves Pan stuck in Pine Marten form under the Monkey’s grip. If Lyra and Pan had been expecting a fight, perhaps Pan would’ve faired better, but as it stands they were too surprised to react appropriately.
I’m new to the Dark Materials series but why didn’t Pan turn into something bigger like a fox or dog? I’m aware they can’t turn into really large animal like bears and elephants but its just something I’m wondering
In the book he is able to turn into a lion, a dragon etc., but only miniature versions and he does it erratically to represent Lyra’s panic and inability to defend herself, not sure why they didn’t do that here.
As Lyra is still young and so is Pan, his transformations are restricted to small animals - until they mature and Pan settles on a small form, whatever he turns into will be small by default. So the cat was the best he could do in that situation
When Daemons are under stress, they have a hard time focussing on what they should turn into. In the books Pan later tells Lyra that next time he will turn into a porcupine or something. He just wasn't prepared.
I think it was just pure panic. You see it a the irratic pace he is changing. He did not have the focus to choose a bigger animal because he was scared and needed to defend himself o the spot too so that made him even less focussed. Lyra too was very shocked Mrs. Coulter just attacked her like that so that also adds up to Pans panic.
In addition to the good comments already made, don’t forget that Pan is essentially a child’s soul. So you have to expect a reaction based on that, not necessarily the best tactical reaction. Also, the violence unleashed by Coulter’s daemon is not normal behavior. She and her monkey are both warped in a sense. I’m not sure a violent response from Pan is even possible at this point in his and Lyra’s lives.
From all the animals she could choose, she choose a golden snub nosed monkey? Like, yes, their canines are very long and these apes are very agile and have more pannaculum carnaseum than gorillas or chimps, but all Primates will lose to a cat. That girl should have choose a clouded leopard or a Eurasain Lynx.
@@yoboibeerus1387 Just to slightly expand on this, while a kid’s Dæmon can willingly change shape into specific animals, more often than not will change into something to reflect their person’s mood, particularly when emotions are running high or they’re under stress. If Lyra was going into this expecting a fight (as she does later in season 2), she could’ve had Pan assume a stronger form. But here, because the Golden Monkey caught them off guard, neither she nor Pan can pick any specific form to fight back with, and end up losing it completely when the Monkey is keeping them distracted with the pain of pulling Pan’s ear.
Why does pan take so many animals forms when he’s being attacked by mrs coulter daemon? And how does Lyra feel in that situation when pan being attacked
It’s taboo for someone to touch another person’s Dæmon against their wishes, it’s seen as the deepest invasion of privacy and is extremely disorienting and unpleasant for the person who’s Dæmon is assaulted (it’s akin to rape in terms of how violating it can be if done unwillingly, because they’re touching harming very soul). Only the most depraved people would even consider it.
She was literally being pinned down, and was feeling the same thing that Pantalaimon was feeling. So yeah can’t really defend yourself when your caught of guard and are in excruciating pain. Also like the person above me quite rightly said touching another’s dæmon is seriously frowned upon unless you have absolute trust with said person
@@daenerystargaryen5132 Well according to the books he CAN, but they are mini versions. But Pan is actually more of a pacifist than Lyra, so in this part he technically didn't fight back at all. Just got pinned. The daemon logic is actually a bit weird.

@@adelaidemountainheart5198 i think mine would be cat as well
I'd say mine would be a deer (well, a buck/stag, specifically).
Serene, peaceful, but isn't afraid to rear the antlers if need be.
what's the name of that soundtrack ?
This is a little bit better than the movie.
This is basically Pokemon live action format
Mrs Coulters dæmon finally has a name
It doesn't.
It really doesn’t.
That name comes from a non-canon radio adaptation a few years ago. It was never actually mentioned in the books.
non canon name
*his name is Brian you uncultured swines*
Clickbait-ass title BRUTAL! DÆMON BATTLE BETWEEN LYRA'S PAN AND MRS COULTER'S DÆMON! (GONE WRONG) (PRANK)
Qual o nome desse série???
Lol its like a stand battle
Ua série maravilhosa que não teve tanto reconhecimento
Sim
Do dæmons become venomous when they turn into something venomous?
Not as brutal as the one where Pantalaimon batters his "dad" (monkey) in season 3.
Hmm.. I don’t know... I’m not loving the portrayal of Lyra so far. The mood is just so different from how it is in the book.
Not just Lyra, but Ms Coulter too. In the book she seemed icy and scary, here she just seems crazy and a bit unsure of herself.
What’s the soundtrack for this music?
The piece sounds similar to "The Settling of a Deamon". It's in the anhtology album.
hello i have a question is there a part of the golden compass when someone says yes you are equipped and yes you are loved ????
Don't worry, Lyra and Pantalaimon soon got their revenge on Marisa Coulter in Lord Boreal's house in Will's World, and Coulter was the one suffering then!
expand nature please we need more of this 🐿️
I loved the movie and the tv show but i never read the books.
Look at that Mawnky!!!!!!
Use your claws lyra.
WEASELS ARE ADORABLE NOOO!!
That woman is so evil!
Calling this a battle is like calling the holocaust a battle.
Do the deamons not feel pain? I get that Mrs coulter is not feeling pain because she's been discounted to her deamon or what ever which allows it to move freely and be away from her but the deamon it's self seems to not react to Pan bitting and scratching it and, I haven't read the book only seen the movie
It's stronger than Pan, and it's colder and more ruthless just like Mrs Coulter.
Daemons do feel pain. When Pan is in pain, so is Lyra and it usually goes vice versa as well. Remember, Lyra was crying out "You're hurting us!!!" meaning both her and Pan are hurting and feeling pain when the monkey attacked Pan
Have u never watch the golden compass
@@shadowx8145 yeah in movie when lyra was escaping and shut window on monkey's hand it hurted mrs. Coulter as well .
This reminds me of jojo bizarre adventure
Ruth wilson is my new crush xD
From all the animals she could choose, she choose a golden snub nosed monkey? Like, yes, their canines are very long and these apes are very agile and have more pannaculum carnaseum than gorillas or chimps, but all Primates will lose to a cat. That girl should have choose a clouded leopard or a Eurasain Lynx.
Humans can't choose their Daemon. The Daemon reflects their personality, and that's why they can't choose
@@maitherolfsenlisa5593 I didn't know that really. Because I didn't watched the show. So thanks for the explanation.
Stand battle vibe
This looks a lot like Golden Compass
same source material, His Dark Materials is the name of the book trilogy, The Golden Compass is the american name of the first book.
Yes, and if you used Google you'd figure out why.
@@littlekitsune1 nahh, who needs proper research and information gathering nowadays?
It hurts Lyra as soon the monkey touches pan
Why does pan take so many animals forms when he’s being attacked by mrs coulter daemon? And how does Lyra feel in that situation when pan being attacked
Lyra gets her mum in series 2.
Once I have a black cat , his name was daemon :) :D
Idk why Lyra didn’t just kick the monkey seriously
I need to lay off those mushrooms. 🎯
I often see the monkey in my nightmares from this scene
[spoilers]
mother of the year, everybody!
Cause she's so sweet 😂🤣
Yeah i really hate lyra's parents.
Should have transformed into a Yellow Throated Marten; Yellow Throated Martens eat Monkeys.

Ok, but why didn’t Pan change into a lion, or a wolf or a bear or something?
He's a kid. He can't.
@@littlekitsune1 why?
@@daenerystargaryen5132 Well according to the books he CAN, but they are mini versions. But Pan is actually more of a pacifist than Lyra, so in this part he technically didn't fight back at all. Just got pinned. The daemon logic is actually a bit weird.
@@daenerystargaryen5132 the more the humans are young, the more their dæmons are small
Why is it that some demons talk and some don't?
All daemons talk, but only to their human generally.
Only Mrs. Coulter's doesn't talk, she straight up abuses her dæmon which is kinda a sad statement about her tightly controlled act and self-repression
