There is a car company (Hyundai/Kia) that manufactures several ICE that have caught fire so many times that they have been recalled. Apparently the problem traces back to the engine block. Rather than replace the engines, the recall installed a sensor that when it detects that the engine is about to catch fire it cuts power and the car can not be restarted. This happened to my wife in her 2013 Optima, at highway speed, on a very hot day, on a long uphill stretch, after passing a semi. She was lucky that this did not happen as she was passing the semi and Kia did replace the engine without charge. However, I have no confidence in a corporation that decides to install such a sensor rather than fixing the problem.
GM replaced my battery in my 2019 and 2020 Bolt EV, but this is unacceptable that GM refuses to replace the battery for these other Bolt EV owners. Time to move to Tesla.
@ConstanceCox I bought two Volts close to 100k a few months ago. 2012 and a 2016. I knew the 2012, on borrowed time. And it is about 6K for a battery.
Luckily, GM replaced my battery in both my 2019 and 2020 Bolt EV's here in the US. I think it's a bad decision that GM has halted battery replacements for existing Bolt EV owners who still have the old batteries. Time to move to Tesla. GM is showing their true colors.
This is typical GM, nothing new. When my brand new Silverado drank 3 qts of oil in 5k miles, they said no problem thats normal. My 230k mile beater Tundra doesn't even drink a quart in 5k. My buddys 30k mile Silverado had failing lifters and sounded like there were marbles in it. GM said it was fine, until it actually comes apart they won't touch it. That was promptly traded in on an F150.
Once i get the update ill be putting mine on the market and getting a tesla. My father in law was about to buy a Chevy Silverado and since they fucked me on my batteries he is no longer even considering a Chevrolet or any GM product
@@GrekArim GM makes some very good cars, I wouldn't want one, but I know many folks who love them. To each his own. Tesla has the best charging network, and extremely good battery management system and other software. Tesla vehicles have a refinement in engineering that seems to be unmatched. They have an excellent service model, of which I have heard really good and really bad things... people, again, being people. I've had OK service here in Alabama on my 2023 Model Y LR. A service visit at my house in September went well. The tech adjusted a camera (free) and repaired the passenger seat controls that a passenger accidently broke ($53). I've a second service coming out in a couple of days to diagnose and repair my GPS which has been flakey, lately. It will be covered under warranty. If you have in home level 2 charging (NEMA 6-50r or 14-50r) or can have it or a wall charger installed,, you can maximize the convenient and economic side of EV ownership, Tesla or otherwise. Due to how much it cost me to put in my NEMA 6-50r receptacle (the materials and labor were about four times what I expected, due to the electrical box being on the far corner of the house from the garage), I'm never likely to have a net savings of EV vs ICE juice for one car, even though the Tesla is saving me around $100 a month right now (electricity vs gas). Only saving grace is that the wife may also need the 6-50 for her metalwork, in which case I'll be able to stop holding it against my move to EVs. Where I hope to see more savings is in the long term maintenance (should be lower for most EVs, regardless of make, but especially for Tesla, still, there is ever a lemon in every bunch), or maybe a second EV, if I can ever talk my wife into replacing her 2020 F-150 with a Cybertruck ... not likely...
Its hard to imagine any company doing a worse job than GM in manageing a crisis then GM did with the Bolt. They gave their customers the tun around for a couple of years before they agreed to replace the batteries. And now just when their reputation has started to recover they do this. From a technical point of view its probably alright, if a battery hasn't caught fire by now it probably isn't going to. But from a public relations point of view this is a disaster. Why would anyone consider buying a GM car in the future unless they sell them at firesale prices which is what theyve had to do with the Bolt.
Well stated, especially the "sell them at fire sale prices"! If you hadn't said it, I would have! GM needs to decide if they REALLY want to give good customer service or not. GM, if you do, state what you'll do and DO IT!
My 2022 Bolt EUV was manufactured in July of 22. It appears to have come off of the assembly line as one of the first post recall cars. I have never charged it to above 85% and normally to 80% at normal household current. I initially ordered a 22 Bolt EV at the end of 2021 just before the recall. When I was informed that production was about to start I was told by the dealership that I would have to wait much longer for the EV as opposed to the EUV so I ordered it. I love the car and I'm glad that I got the EUV because I have had people in the back seat and the car is an ideal 4 seater in this configuration.
I own a 2021 Bolt and GM never contacted me about the change in direction. I contacted them to confirm what I was reading on the internet. They then confirmed the software solution and informed me that my Bolt was now ready to receive the software and that I should schedule an appointment at my dealership. The dealership was as confused as I was about the battery replacement strategy. They are taking the brunt of the customer anger. GM has established themselves as the world's worst communicator and destroyed their reputation (for me anyway). My next EV will not be from GM. They can not be trusted.
I would speculate that GM’s accountants are recommending an approach like this to maximize their tax write-off due to losses. Mary says, “OK looks good. Let’s do that.”
GM Lost 500 million on an autonomous vehicle program INSTEAD of replacing batteries. 300 million also lost from garbage sales. We have a 2020 Bolt that we bought..... it was recalled for a replacement 4 months after. That was 3 years ago !!!!! The software was not the problem and the software can't stop a fire in any way at all. DC " Fast " charging bypasses the onboard chargers and goes directly to the battery, new software can't stop a thermal runaway from happening. We got the email for a replacement on June 13th and took it in. The dealer swapped it for a new one. THEN GM told them to take it back out and put the old one back in ...... They then set my car to 78% charge. That makes it a 150 mile POS that we are paying full price for. We bought a 256 mile EV NOT a 150 mile EV. They say to not take the car below 70 miles left ....... That is half the range total now. The car charges three time slower than any other EV out there right now. They are gonna give us a new pack with 100% charging OR buy the car back at full owed amount. Legally in the U.S. you can't put a car on the road with KNOWN safety risks to the public. These cars with just software are known safety risks. Period end of story. GM is guilty and a fraud on this one. Proven in courts across America already. Thank you Sam for telling the truth to the world.
hope you learned your lesson, that GM is trash and always has been, (if you had to make another trip) and you should have never brought your car back (if you had to go back) to put the old battery back in. sell that POS to carvana and buy something else. fighting with GM is always a losing battle.
I have the same feelings but i am being shafted on my 2022. I purchased and a week later it was recalled. So I’ve been driving years on diminished range and the least they could do is swap the batteries. I paid for a product i never received albeit i did for 1 week……. IT such bull shit that we put our trust and faith into doing what’s right for the planet by trying to switch and we get screwed by higher costs and diminished range. I hate GM and never will purchase another one. Anyone who talks about buying a Chevrolet i just laugh at. At this point the world should have opened their eyes to how bad the company is. I really hope they go out of business. Also its ironic how when they fucked up in 2008 they used our tax $ to bail themselves out. Now when their customers need to be bailed out its friken crickets!!!!!!! GM give the government their money back and go out of business already!!!
The end came sooner for me because they bought my 2020 Bolt EV back! But it's so ironic that this video came out... I received in the mail a recall for what is called the traction battery(the one on the underside of the car). In that recall, they lined out how earlier vehicles would have their batteries changed first and so on. But it's funny that the video shows many pics of the 12 volt battery. Mine (12 volt) went bad with very low miles on it several times. They took two weeks to replace the 12 volt battery, which should be less than a half hour job. Anyway, they couldn't ever pinpoint why the car kept "bricking." Good ridden!
An investigative reporter should buy a used bolt that has never had the battery changed, take it to a professional to get the battery adjusted so it should fail the "test". Then have GM run the test. When it passes, because they all pass. Run the article exposing GM for lying. We all know the software does not work. It is just a scape goat for anything else that happens later.

I wonder what GM dealers say when a buyer wants to trade in one of those recalled Bolts? I imagine it would be something like well... that car is not worth much because it has one of those sketchy batteries.
I got my 2021 Bolt battery replaced in early July. I complained on an "X" Chevy posting. They were advertising their new EV models and I asked about us Bolt owners. They reached out privately and said I was eligible for a replacement. Whether that was based on my complaining or previous chat history with Chevy. I am grateful to have it replaced.
I've been driving my 2020 for 30k miles. No battery means significantly reduced resale vale (monetary damages). Now they want to cripple my car for 6200 miles, further diminishing its value? Don't think so. Fucking over 54,000 customers is not a good idea.
This whole mess was handled very poorly and inefficiently. Having the dealers swap batteries piece by piece is a huge money suck. Should have just bought all the cars back on a pro-rata basis based on use, condition and mileage, procure all the replacement batteries, then set up a manufacturing gnline to pull out the old and install the new. Then sell all the repaired cars to the government or a rental fleet and then sell all the bad batteries to a recycler so squeeze every cent out of the fiasco as possible. I'm sure if they had handled it all at once the costs of the replacements would have dropped a lot and then getting the proceeds from the sale of the repaired cars and recycled batteries would have paid off a decent amount of the cost.
Yes, or send them to China where they are already used to stock BYD and many other makes on the field or first floor of unfinished buildings. Just throw that crap away but before make serious recycling unlike Chinese CCP and their corrupt leaders. Don’t think that LG Chem is responsible but GM itself by choosing that setup. 😂
lol the government would prob avoid that deal, or back out of it. rental car fleets likely would pass too. good idea if people were on board....but even more costly if they backed out
So is a used 2017-2019 Bolt with a replaced battery a good deal at say 20k miles for around $17,000? Or am I dumb to even consider a used Bolt? I’d never buy one unless the battery was replaced though.
Been dealing with them for almost 3 years on my 2020 Bolt recall. They give you the run around. Such bull. Any current class action suits that we can be part of or start? Im done going through the chevy Concierge. Worthless.
Thank you for the info. We are just looking at a 2013 Chevy EUV Bolt for our son, now I don’t know if it is the right choice or if they will replace the battery when it dies. I heard they are discontinued and bringing in a new Bolt in 2025 with a different battery. If we are able to switch batteries to the new one then it might be okay to purchase now.
I bought a 2020 with 6500 miles without replaced battery. It is a great deal at $14,000 (after $4,000 FIT credit). It only charges to 78%, but that gives me 200-250 miles of range. At some % of charge they will replace the pack under the 8 yr / 100,000 miles warranty?
From the start these automakers should have used interchangeable batteries in the first place. Thus creating a global standard. Well, by continent is alright too. If the batteries can be interchangeable then faulty batteries can be eliminated as soon as they come from the car when fresh batteries are installed. So you can drive on safely. And let use clear: there is no need to be the owner of a battery pack.
no thanks. im not paying for another subscription to use the car. or wait in line at swap center, so on. how about build them better, safer, more efficient and warranty when needed.
chevy is dumping the bolt.. i dont care, i bought a 2017 bolt.. ill buy another one.. once i pay this one off... the new blazer is 66K//////// what the f .. ill keep buying used bolts,.. forget all the makers for making cars most people cant afford...
To be fair, it's unknown if a good thermal management system, backed by a competent software system, would have stopped the fires. But GM is NOT a software company like Tesla.
I have a 2022 bolt ev and they did two software updates already due to the lithium ion battery. The first software limited my charge to 80% now the limited to 20% only getting 71 miles of range on a 259 mile car. For sure getting rid of it and going the Tesla direction.
Hi Sean, Long Time Subscriber; Recent Member…. I have a 2023 Bolt EUV with the newer battery. Question: I need to use about 80% charge to drive to work every two days. Is it better to use 10-90% of the battery range every two days OR 0-80% of the battery range every two days. In other words, does it hurt to use the bottom 10-20% of the battery pack or just worry about the top 20%? Thanks for your help, Love Australia!!!! Nick
GM is broken. I seriously considered buying a Bolt then they said they’ll be stopping production. I’m out on a discontinued potentially unsafe vehicle.
I Received recall notice for my bolt battery thinking that I would get a new battery and instead got software that shorted me on 40 miles of range which now i can,t reach my destination. the reason i Bolt Ev for. Now it will take 2-3 years to make the miles to restore my full range be cause i can't go the distant and I have to use my other car, on account of this I plan not to buy Gm products!
When I am in the market for a car, I just don't look at the car, I look at the seller. If they don't seem trustworthy I won't buy no matter how good the car looks. GM looks shady.
Not so long ago GM "lost" the ability to make a reliable ignition switch which could support the weight of keys on a keychain without failing some how people expected GM the company who made such a basic automotive electrical blunder would do well going making all electric cars, this feels like magical thinking on the part of GM management and GM investors.
Personally, I’ve never been the one to rush out and be the first owner of New Technologies. I like to take the wait and see if it pans out. There are always growing pains on new equipment.. Never have been the Guinea Pig type to have all the issues involved with new software.🤔
This is surprising to nobody who knows anything about GM. Their accounting department has put them where they are right now versus at their peak. They have no loyalty to their customers at all.
so if during the 6k mile test.. basically 6 months.. your f'n house burns down from your shitty product catching fire in the garage.. is GM gonna pickup up the home rebuild cost? The lawsuit for anyone hurt during these 'tests" is going to be hilariously huge. They'll wish they'd just replaced every damn battery. I'm no lawyer.. but I'm sure any lawyer worth his paper would lick his chops at a case where a HUGE company put their customer on a 6 month 'test' with a KNOWN catastrophic potential result. All for one of the worst EVs on sale in the USA.. lol.. what a joke.
This EV regime is just decimating the legacy brands expenditure. Its almost like they're starting all over again learning new skill, new business, uncharted territory
Whoa ..that sucks for my Volt owning friends especially my One... Republican friend...og and talk about pissed lol... sorry Dan, I feel yea. And I bet Dollars to Doughnuts someone sues them over this given as you said they illuded to it and never denied it in articles saying the same thing.
If the deal is 6000 miles, then Chevy is off the hook no matter what, that's objectionable. If however, the deal is 6000 miles, then the software continues to monitor, and Chevy will replace bad modules if they ever are detected, that makes good sense. Greatly reduce the magnitude of required replacements, while continuing to protect the owners.
In fact, it is ESPECIALLY important to keep monitoring for at least a few thousand miles after the 6000 mile end point. Why? Because starting at the 6000 mile end point, they are allowing greater stress on the battery pack - borderline modules that didn't show up at 80% charging, may start showing up at 100% charging.
The 2020-2022 cars were added to the recall later than the 2017-2019 cars, because of a fire at a dealership that turned out to have been misreported. GM caused LG to make some changes to the manufacture of batteries for the 2020 model year, changes designed to lessen the chance of the kind of misalignment that caused battery fires in the earlier cars. The software being installed in the 2020-2022 cars is already in the 2023 cars and it is working well so far. It might have been better if you'd reported this as a news story instead of having already drawn the conclusion that owners were being cheated.
If that’s true and no 2020s could have an issue I don’t see why they’d continue to cripple the product for over 6000 miles. Something in their data has them concerned enough to be playing this safe.

Very amazing video

Yet another reason why I will only buy a Tesla. In a few years I will try and buy a used model 3.
The "software fix" they tried at the start of this mess didn't go very well.
An example of why NOT to buy a GM. If it's not major quality problems, it's them being liars and and not standing behind defective products.
everything they build is a defect.
chevy is dumping the bolt.. i dont care, i bought a 2017 bolt.. ill buy another one.. once i pay this one off... the new blazer is 66K//////// what the f .. ill keep buying used bolts,.. forget all the makers for making cars most people cant afford...
Shocking
Hi Sean,
Long Time Subscriber; Recent Member….
I have a 2023 Bolt EUV with the newer battery.
Question: I need to use about 80% charge to drive to work every two days.
Is it better to use 10-90% of the battery range every two days
OR
0-80% of the battery range every two days.
In other words, does it hurt to use the bottom 10-20% of the battery pack or just worry about the top 20%?
Thanks for your help,
Love Australia!!!!
Nick
Nice amazing excellent ❤❤❤
Very nice ❤
Amazing car ❤❤
GM is broken. I seriously considered buying a Bolt then they said they’ll be stopping production. I’m out on a discontinued potentially unsafe vehicle.
Pretty sure GM will be riding the lightning for this one again. I have a GM fleet and am giddy to never buy a GM product AGAIN!
One can only hope they get together with vw an someone finds out how to spell SOFTWARE
We also have 3 fleet tahoes. Along with my own suburban and bolt. Gm can stick it. Once the tahoes are miled out its another brand.
Luckily I got my new battery today. But GMs trying to clean their hands and walk away.
Who still trusts gm? Ev1 and done.
When I am in the market for a car, I just don't look at the car, I look at the seller. If they don't seem trustworthy I won't buy no matter how good the car looks. GM looks shady.
GM is great at software and would never lie to customers who could die as a result just to save money. Right?
Honest Asa used car salesman from Columbus Mississippi
Not so long ago GM "lost" the ability to make a reliable ignition switch which could support the weight of keys on a keychain without failing some how people expected GM the company who made such a basic automotive electrical blunder would do well going making all electric cars, this feels like magical thinking on the part of GM management and GM investors.
We have a 2018 bolt. It’s a good car. That being said, if Herbert Deis(?) was fired by Volkswagen, why does Mary Barra still have a job?
Great point
Personally, I’ve never been the one to rush out and be the first owner of New Technologies. I like to take the wait and see if it pans out. There are always growing pains on new equipment.. Never have been the Guinea Pig type to have all the issues involved with new software.🤔
Ironic that this video, has an ad. in the middle of it advertising ESSO and all of it's attributes ! but I let it run through !
All for one of the worst EVs on sale in the USA.. lol.. what a joke.
people didnt learn from their key recall either...or the AFM failures, or every other poorly built product they have made.
Awesome
So, what would be the most reliable ev to buy? For a decent price?
@@onwisconsin2362 omg. so expensive...
@@onwisconsin2362You missed where they asked for reliable. The answer is the Nissan Leaf.
This EV regime is just decimating the legacy brands expenditure. Its almost like they're starting all over again learning new skill, new business, uncharted territory
@EnriqueThiele How they could not have researched public demand is bizarre
would be accurate if GM actually knew how to build a quality car to begin with.
Figuring it out as time passes
just validates my long standing policy of i wont ever touch a GM vehicle for the rest of my life.
If I could afford one ……… naaaah PASS
Whoa ..that sucks for my Volt owning friends especially my One... Republican friend...og and talk about pissed lol... sorry Dan, I feel yea. And I bet Dollars to Doughnuts someone sues them over this given as you said they illuded to it and never denied it in articles saying the same thing.
( breathy voice) ULTRAFIIIIIIIIIIIIRRREEE “it’s getting hot in here”
If the deal is 6000 miles, then Chevy is off the hook no matter what, that's objectionable.
C’mon man GM made the electronics so half and half is fair …
Friday builds :)
The worm that squirmed.
