I think the lower key sounded better. Of course the other things were needed like singing it with more ‘ooomph’ for a lack of a better word, more emotional connection instead of like he’s going through the motions. . Also more enunciation (opening his mouth). However, I liked the MUCH lower better. I don’t think he has major work to do...just little tweaking. I am a singer as well.

I know some people might prefer the lower key from an aesthetic perspective, but from the standpoint of the FUNCTIONAL balance of the voice, the upper key was much better. Remember, this was only 5 weeks and this was new for him. As I said, it's not the finished product but just a STEP in the process. These are the in between stages that no one likes to talk about but everyone has to go through at some point in time or another.

Great work, both of you! Brock's voice is sooo beautiful, and the compression in the middle range (the "calling out" voice) sounds great in the "after" clip. I love the musicianship and, of course, the impeccable song choice. Can't go wrong with George Strait! 😉 (Not only saying this as a Texan, LOL. The man is a living legend for a reason!)

I hate to say it, but his initial video was significantly better. I'm not sure if it was the camera's audio quality in the second video, or just signing in the higher key, but yeah. He looked more strained, lost his vibrato and lacked character.

I like the lower key - sound more natural and heartfelt.

I can see that. But keep in mind, this was new for him. It's a new part of his range that he was just getting used to. It didn't yet feel familiar to him -- familiar enough to where he could express himself naturally. This is to be expected with only 5 weeks of training.

I liked the higher key, but I would change the timbre/colors of the vowels a lot more. I feel like he kept it in the same spot. I personally prefer a higher timbre/color a long with a high key. But nevertheless the change was there and it was very good for 5 weeks.

Thanks for commenting! I know what you mean, though. For where he was at during that time, it WAS very important to keep everything in the same spot, hence some of the uniformity of the sound color. It was paving the pathway for all of his higher range. Once that place is familiar enough to you (over a period of months), then you can begin to play with the color more without losing the balance.

I have a question : did he have a vocal coaching before he contacted you marnell ?!

No. I was his first teacher. He had already been singing for a number of years, though. He had just started looking up vocal technique information online for approximately a year prior to working with me.
