  • What started as a video on a fernet and coke quickly spiraled out of control. I now possess 9 bottles of fernet, so it's time for a showdown. Which is the best straight up, and which is the best in the classic Argentinian highball fernet and coke?

    In Argentina not only we use a 2L Coke bottle, but also 3L ones, for more pleasure.
    The classic way of making it, is first pouring the fernet over ice, after that the coke, and if you end up with a lot of foam, a few dashes of fernet on top.

    Hey Nick! As a Fernet-lover Argentinian just a heads up for everyone: The way coke is made varies from country to country, and in some cases the flavor really changes. Just wanna let you know this if you travel and notice that fernet & coke in Argentina isn't the same as in the UK or Germany Or China. Otherwise keep up the great content, its always helpful for rookies bartenders as myself.

      Also, the Fernet-Branca and the Branca Menta in Argentina taste differently than the Italian version. Argentina has its own Branca distillery. Side by side, the Argentine fernet is less astringent and the Argentine Menta is a deep green and a bit more bitter and less syrupy

    It's so funny to me that drinks that are overwhelmingly popular in some places are very unpopular or at least considered niche or unpalatable in other places.
    How in the world did fernet take off so well in Argentina? It tastes like medicine.
    Then again, how in the world did root beer take off in the US? It tastes like medicine.
    And yet I like both of them. Should I just be drinking cough syrup?

      Since just about all liquors and sodas are derived from some kind of medicinal herbal combination. Pretty much. Yes. It's a really fun dig into drink history and you can then find some ways to make your own. Wild Cherry bark soda or Birch Beer or sasparilla. I've learned in the past year, that there's some herbal medicines that work well, including some odd thing called Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa which goes well with a rye whiskey.

    I'm from Prague (Czech Rep.) and R. Jelinek is definitely not a respected still here. It's the McDonald's of booze, tourists and broke teens by it. If you want a Fernet that's representative of Czech taste, try Fernet Stock from the still in Božkov founded in 1873, back when we were part of the Austo-Hungarian Empire. Good luck :)

    We have 11 fernets at the bar I work at, and we utilize it in a lot of our cocktails. You're missing my favorite, though! Letherbee fernet from Chicago. Very rich, with notes of eucalyptus, black tea tannins, and a bitter bite that balances against unaged spirits in cocktails well.

  • @JasminMiettunen
    @JasminMiettunen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I love these types of videos, I've never really looked into Fernets before. Disregarding the one outlier, how interchangeable are these in mixed drinks? I'd love to see a video about different types of Amaro too, what are very similar to others, what are some unique ones, what common drinks they are in, anything like that. You probably need a month or two to recover after drinking all that Fernet, though...

    • @CocktailChemistry
      @CocktailChemistry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You should def get the Amaro book, it'll give you way more insight beyond my videos. The challenge with this category is that it's not really standardized like other spirits. For example in this video, that Czech fernet is such an outlier, I'd hesitate to even call it a fernet. Most mixed drinks you see with fernet will be optimizing for Fernet Branca

    • @cnhoffman

    I'm another argentinian commenting. One fact it's that we have the only other factory/distillery of Fernet Branca in the world outside Italy. And as an amateur bartender i use Branca Menta in a riff of the southside, just a quarter ounce intensifies the mint flavour and turns it a beautiful shade of green.

  • @Skibadeeba
    @Skibadeeba 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In general, great video as always! However, I'm disappointed that you gave the impression that Fernet Leopold is a weed Fernet. It isn't, and it isn't supposed to taste like weed (personally, I don't get that flavor or aroma at all). I serve it and I have it on my bar cart at home right now. I've even talked with Todd Leopold about it, and cannabis doesn't come up. Weed is great, but it's disappointing to see the Colorado+weed association dominate the takeaway on what is supposed to just be a Fernet-esque amaro with some Rocky Mountain botanicals.
    On the other hand, I'm excited to check out the Fred Jerbis Fernet! Cheers!

    • @cnhoffman

      I have a bottle of it too and I live in Denver. I've never ever heard a bartender or a fernet enthusiast compare the Leopold Bros fernet to weed. Nick is entitled to his opinion but his opinion is very atypical of most people's assessment.

    Fernet-Branca was my mother's milk. While pregnant with me and for many years after, she'd occasionally take a shot glass sized hit often with a good splash of 7Up mixed in to settle her stomach. As I grew older I'd make it for her until she quit drinking it when I was about 14 - 15. I never could stand the taste of it.

    Sadly, none of those except for the Fermet Branca and Fermet Menta are available here in Florida. I enjoy a small shot of Branca after a meal, and really like the Menta with either CokeZero or Diet Sprite, but it also works with Mountain Dew surprisingly. Seems like I'd have to go to Cali to get the Fred Jerbis brand... :(

    i like to use fernet to make a highball my grandpa used to drink.
    in a tall glass with ice:
    2 oz sweet vermouth (here in argentina you can find martini, cinzano or carpano)
    1/4 oz fernet (or 1/2 if you prefer more bitter punch) i'm not a branca fundamentalist anylike most people around here
    top up with soda (preferably from a siphon).
    cheers.

    Fernet is dope. It is good in it self but using it as a bitter is interesting.

    Easily the best Branca Menta drink is a Good Night, Irene, which is Branca Menta and Bourbon, shaken with ice and strained into an ice filled glass. Hell of a nightcap.

    You should know that the fernet branca from Italy is sweeter than the one made in Argentina which is the one you should use for fernet and coke.

    In argentina you do ice first, then fernet, and after that you do coke. And you can drink branca menta either with coke or sprite.
