WALKING IN HERTFORDSHIRE | BERKHAMSTED | A CASTLE, A CANAL AND A TOTEM POLE?!

  • Welcome back to Hertfordshire! This will be the first in a series of Hertfordshire walks that myself and Candice have been doing during the first half of 2021. We have chosen to focus on Hertfordshire for a while in order to complete the AA 50 Walks In Hertfordshire book. As wild camping is a bit of a no go at the moment due to the UK Lock Down, we are sticking with short day walks in East Anglia.
This particular walk was 5 miles in total (keeping our mileage to 5 miles or less right now whilst daylight hours are at a minimum) and was in and around the fascinating town of Berkhamsted near the Chiltern Hills in West Hertfordshire.
It had a little bit of everything, all the ingredients that make for a brilliant walk!
If you feel that you would like to give back to the channel and help fund the continuation of videos, you can make a donation no matter how small via my tomoutdoors88 PayPal account. Just use my email address pttomhill@hotmail.com
I am in the process of setting up a Buy Me A Coffee account (no adverts in these videos!).
Donations will go towards things such as fuel costs for travelling to locations to film, maintaining my car to do so, filming equipment for higher quality videos and even new data storage and editing software upgrades. All essential things for running a channel. All donations are greatly appreciated, thank you!

Nice to see you guys off to church, not quite sure you've understood the mechanics of communion, but I guess cider and cheese bap is close enough lol. Great walk, thanks guys. Hope you've warmed up now.

Great video mate. When the big C word is finished we really need to get over there and have a good look around.

I guess the first ciders positives balance out the negatives of the second. Nice walk, and I liked the music also, I like how you used the music under the voice over for the castles history... You're getting good at this lol. Cheers again for the shout out... Again. Lol Atb James

I'd like to point out that the cider was still nice! Just not as good as the other one. Haha I have laid the music under the voice over before you know lol its a bugger getting the volume levels right though! Cheers mate.

An interesting walk Tom, as a Hertfordshire man I sadly haven’t explored Berkhamsted so will definitely do that ASAP! Look forward to your next one, stay safe 👍

Cheers mate yeah definitely check it out. My next few videos are all in Hertfordshire as we're trying to get the book done. No point trying to get any long distance walks with wild camping done atm because of the lock down so I figured it's the best opportunity to get a county's small walks done first.

@@TOM_OUTDOORS Makes perfect sense! I use an OS pathfinder guide 'Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire - Outstanding circular walks' Probably crosses over with your walks, if you want a walking partner let me know, otherwise enjoy god's county!! ;-)

Ah, great video, good to see you and Candice out and about again. Had 'Pathfinder' guide to the Peak District, (outstanding circular walks) given to me at Christmas. Can't wait to get stuck into them. Stay warm, stay safe, look forward to more walks from your guidebook.

A warm hat will keep the fingers and toes warm. Thanks for another enjoyable walk in the countryside. And that totem came a long way from British Columbia. Cheers from Toronto.

Cheers mate but Candice hates wearing hats, it's a form of claustrophobia for her I think she said. She does have one or two hats, one of which was made for her by my mate hambo and it says Mrs Outdoors! Very rarely does she wear it.

This is where Graham Greene was born. I was reading The Human Factor and he writes about his childhood memories of this place. I thought it was imaginary (I'm in South America). I was surprised to see everything come to life jn this video.

Cool! I've driven through Berkhamsted loads of times and never knew that it had that history and all those interesting places to see. Maybe I'll stop there one day and take a look if I get over that way again. That was quite novel having your lunch in the church - good idea though I guess as it was such a cold day. Funny how you were being so quiet thinking someone was praying but they had left LOL. Guess the cider was more interesting than communion wine! ATB to you both, Hambo

That’s so funny...Candice tells you to get her in shot, then hides behind her guide book 😆 ... and then beats you to saying ‘bye’ !
I’m going to miss seeing ‘Ollie ‘ downing half a bottle of cider during the review 😔
Shame God didn’t supply heating in that church... he probably thinks cider is best served chilled 😬❄️

This was filmed back in January. No snow then. We've got snow at the moment but not going for a walk in it right now as I've got work for the next 2 days. It'll probably be gone by the weekend when we go for our next walk.

Tried posting a link about the totem pole but youtube won't post it. It originates from kwakiult, british columbia, Canada. It was commissioned by a John Alsford in 1968, a director of the timber merchants that was once at that site. There's a post by a Richard Keith wolf about it on the shitterwebs. I looked it up years ago when I saw it on a cycle ride up the towpath to Tring some years ago
