Magic Trick! How to get a lot of continuous bias cut fabric strips from a small amount of fabric

  • Short on fabric? This video will show you how to make over 20 yards of continuous bias cut fabric strips in 15 minutes with only 3/4 yard of fabric and no waste!! If you need a lot of bias cut fabric strips to cover welt or piping cord and you are short on fabric, this trick is like magic! Many times over the years I've needed to make a lot of welt cording or piping for cushions, upholstery projects, pillows, or draperies, and didn't have enough fabric to do it the traditional way. This method saved me every time. It requires very little sewing and cutting, and results in almost zero wasted fabric.
I found this method many years ago in a (now out of print) book published in 1979 by Sunset called Slipcovers & Bedspreads. Below is a chart of the approximate number of running yards of 1 5/8" wide continuous bias casing you can get using this method.
    1/2 yd of 36" fabric: 10 yds
    1/2 yd. of 48" fabric: 13 yds.
    1/2 yd. of 54" fabric: 14 yds.
    3/4 yd. of 36" fabric: 16 yds.
    3/4 yd. of 48" fabric: 20 yds.
    3/4 yd. of 54" fabric: 22 yds.
    1 yd. of 36" fabric: 22 yds.
    1 yd. of 48" fabric: 26 yds.
    1 yd. of 54" fabric: 29.5 yds.

This was the best idea ever. I'm making porch cushions and was able to get about 25 yards of bias strips with your MAGIC trick. My dad was an upholsterer and he taught me a totally different way of doing this. I wish he was still alive so that I could teach him this method. Thank you so much.

I've used this trick since the 80's. Found it on a vhs video on how to upholster. The only difference is after cutting 4 corners off, and cutting through one layer diagonally to opposite corner as she shows. Then flip fabric over and cut down the other corner, through single layer diagonally down to its opposite corner. You'll have a cut opposite of each other but on opposite sides, like an X. This allows the fabric to lay flater to open up to the 6inch section to cut next. It works. So glad someone finally put it on youtube.

Interesting alternate option! I found it in a 1979 Sunset book on upholstery. It has saved me on numerous occasions :)

@@ASquarePillowIsntSquare Those Sunset books were actually really great! I have a bias tape gadget to run the tape through to create bias binding, and they gave me a parallelogram pattern to use that’s quite efficient. It doesn’t create automatically continuous tape though. This is amazing!

I’ve seen several other videos on how to cut bias strips, but I have never seen this technique. Who thinks these methods up? Absolutely brilliant. I’m gonna try this on my next project.

Thank you for this. I had only 16 inches of fabric and needed 6 yards of welting. Your method provided me with 9 yards of welting. Brilliant way to maximize yardage.

I found this method in the internet many years ago to make binding for a quilt. I wrote down the instructions and of course I lost them in the black hole that lives in my sewing room. This is the absolute best method to make bias I've ever seen. Thank you for posting and now I have a video I can save rather than a piece of paper I will promptly loose.
