These are really nice shots. I just got off 51 myself at about 11:00 this morning. 301 was in the consist but not leading. I didn't get out of my sleeper to see the switching after midnight but we did have one Superliner added after the Indianapolis stop.
Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm hoping to catch something being dropped off or picked up from Beech Grove but it's always in the middle of the night. Only a few days in June is the sun close to rising at the six am departure time.
"Lot of picture takers," says the feller on the train, calling out the railfans. Bet the crew will be glad to be back to running on schedule, when it's too dark for railfanning. Love the 50th anniversary livery and the tribute to the pointless arrow logo .
Thank you so much!!! I really do appreciate it. I'm going to thank you in the next video I publish. It should be out on Friday or so. And if you have any ideas for videos please do let me know. Thanks again!
The Cardinal has been running with the 3rd Amfleet II coach for a bit now. I rode the train to and from Cincy to NYC in December and it had the 3rd coach. Very needed, as even with the 3rd coach it gets full for some of the trip.
I didn't know that. Hopefully, that's a good sign the ridership is increasing and hopefully, bodes well for daily service instead of the current three times a week.
I live across CSX tracks in West Virginia. I couldn't tell you what the Cardinal's schedule is. It comes by at different times - hours apart. 8 hours late is more the norm than one would expect. 7 coaches? Must be dead-heading them. Usually has 4. There's talk of making it a daily (it is 3x a week currently). Great drone shots!
I'd love it if they would make it a daily train. I think the ridership would be there to support it. I know there's not much they can do when the weather gets as bad as it has, but it certainly doesn't instill faith in booking a trip unless it's a warmer month.
Amtrak 50/51 do not go by the Beech Grove Shops. The shops are on the former NYC Shelbyville Secondary which is out of service southeast of Shelbyville. Amtrak uses the former B&O Indianapolis Sub between Hamilton and Indianapolis. If 50/51 has cars for Beech Grove, they drop them at Union Station in downtown Indianapolis and a yard crew shuttles the cars between IUS and the shops.
Sorry, I should have clarified it doesn't run next to the shops, only that it's the only train that runs close enough to ferry cars to and from Beech Grove. I'm hoping to catch a transfer in the summer when the sun is up its earliest.
According to TRAINS magazine, there are plans to add two more routes going to Cincinnati Ohio. The plan for the first is the train to run from Detroit to New Orleans thru Cincinnati. The second is a train starting from Dallas running to New York. The train will run through Cincinnati. Oddly the is a proposal of a train running from Chicago to Florida. Louisville is one of the plan stops. Oddly if the Chicago to Florida train and the Detroit to New Orleans are selected, Cincinati will have connection to Florida. Strangely there is the plan to make the Cardinal into a daily run train.
I would love to see all those routes and increased service happen, but I think someone was just throwing darts at the wall when they came up with some of them. Although, I think the Dallas - Cincinnati - NYC has the best shot of the proposed new routes going through Cincinnati (minus the Cincinnati - Columbus - Cleveland shorter route). I just don't see a strong demand for Detroit - Cincinnati - New Orleans, but who knows, I guess anything is possible.
First time viewer: very nice camerawork and commentary. That Superliner must have been equipment off the Auto Train, as that's the only eastern train so equipped. I wonder how it got from the Lorton Terminal to Washington Union Station.
Welcome to the channel. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I bet the superliner was added to one of the Northeast Regionals from Newport News or Norfolk, VA. No other Trains stop at the Lorton station so it must've been a special pickup.
Hello NKY. Happy belated holidays. It's ironic that you recorded this video on December 22, 2024. I was on train 51 Cardinal that left Philadelphia on December 20, 2024. Surprisingly it was smooth sailing for me. However, train 50 was canceled on January 4, 2025, due to weather and equipment problems.
Happy belated holidays to you too. It has definitely been a rough patch for Amtrak these past few weeks. I'm glad you had a smooth trip. You seem to have really lucked out as of recently.
8 hours late?!! That's the main reason Amtrak needs to be sold to USA company that actually needs to know how to run a railroad. Amtrak should be on DOGE's top of the list.😒😒😮 Great railfanning video by the way. 😊
I take it you don’t know what happened in the 70’s when the railroads did have passenger service? Also, Elon hates rail and his faux blue ribbon committee can’t do a thing about it. Amtrak is governed by Congress.

Great video. My friend and I were two of the railfans you spoke of in Hamilton.
Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
It was a lot of fun to record (even with the freezing temps).
How did your pictures/videos turn out?
Great video and I love your drone shots.
Thank you very much.

Caught both trains at Maysville and it is a rare sight to see them in the daylight though here

so it goes into killago does th crew get combat pay and body armor? wonder how m,any bullet holes they have to patch each trip?

@@nkyrailfan That makes sense, thanks.
Why depending on Amtrak to get you somewhere is questionable.
I agree.
If you have the time and can be a few hours late, it's great, but you could never depend on it if you're on a tight deadline.

Something sure needs to be done to improve the reliability of the service.
