    The D700 is a legendary camera for a reason. Colors, saturation, overall images have a distinct look. Feels great in the hands. I’ve been using a Nikon D3 lately with the D700 and loving them both. The D3 is the D700’s big brother producing a very similar look to the images. The Nikon D300 is the DX little sister to those two full frame cameras with, again a similar over all image quality look. The tree cameras complement each other very well.

      Well said. We are painting pictures with these things, and my D300 that I bought new years ago gives me great lens options (crop sensor), while my D700s are the full frame producers. When I need to shoot super fast/sports/high res, it is the new Z9. What a lovely set of paint brushes with which to create our art.

    Snap! I too have just bought a D700 and it's now 2023. I agree, its sensor does have a unique look. Pixel integrity and monochromatic grain contribute to that look. Sharpness is quite low down on how I measure a lens so, like yourself, I am pairing my D700 with pre/ai/ais lens to document my artistic practice. Canon is used for my commercial work, their pixels appear more 'buttery' to me so more suited to food and portraits. On the Nikon/Nykon pronounciation. If you wish to say it as the Japanese say it then it's Nikon (it is a Japanese word after all). If you wish to say it via America then it's Nykon, made famous by Paul Simon's song Kodachrome. In the UK media they seem to say Japanese words via America, so much is mispronounced, such as Eizo, (Naomi) Osaka, Karaoke, and all those popular Japanese foods you can think of. Anyway time to think and visualise with my new D700.

      I'm currently shooting with both 5Dii and D700. The 5Dii pictures need much more adjustments in the editing process to show the quality they have while the D700 pictures rarely need any touch, only minimal touches and Boom! gorgeous photos they are.
      The 5Dii photos have truer color reproduction while the D700 color is more "poetic" :))
      Of course, the lenses used have HUGE impact on both cameras.

    Oh what fun: Just saw your post (we are now in 2023). I bought a used D700 (first DSLR, technically), but used it for less than 4 weeks when my pre-ordered D850 arrived. Yes, I was one of those - ordering a camera I'd never laid hands on - nor understood - because I was lured by "for the hybrid shooter" meaning sports/portraits/landscape and it had 4K video. No, I didn't understand a thing about backside illuminated sensors, pixel pitch, phase detection, megapixels (isn't more better?), one card slot vs two, LCDs, flippy screens or the like. To be honest, I shot the D850 almost exclusively for several years - but then took a new look at (and appreciation for) the D700. I read the manual 4 years after owning it. I had no idea it had 3D tracking with 52 autofocus points (I had never used it for that). I now realized the pixel pitch was nearly double the D850 - 8.4 vs. 4.2 microns, and a host of other things - like one of the things that separates it from other Nikon cameras (other than the D3) was the monochromatic noise - giving it a more "filmish" grain. By the time Nikon mirrorless arrived, in earnest, I knew what I was looking for. I had a list of 25 features I wanted before I'd jump on a Nikon mirrorless. The Z9 answered almost all of those (if you're wondering, I shoot mostly sports, action, wildlife). Still, I take the D700 out once a week and force myself to shoot with it - not caring about its weight, the one Compact Flash card slot, the low resolution LCD, the lack of touch screen, the loud and somewhat violent shutter slap or ...wait for it...the 12 megapixel resolution. There are some Canon cameras that just have "a look" to their images. Nikon's line-up can say the same thing. Whether it's the color science of the D700 - which was unique - or the monochromatic noise - or something else - it really doesn't matter. It's all there for those that appreciate it. Like the 200mm f/2 - it's big, bulky, and once cost a small kidney - but it's still there for us to enjoy, and for anyone that has seen an image generated with either, you know what I'm talking about.

    • @duringthemeanwhilst
      @duringthemeanwhilst  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nice one 🙂
      can't argue with any of that - mainly because I've no idea what half the technical stuff means (ha!!) - but on the "look" - well, that's all that matters 🙂

    • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam ปีที่แล้ว

      @@duringthemeanwhilst Right on! Listen, I'm a beginner - who is now dangerous - because I actually know a little bit - but that said, it has helped me understand why certain things are the way they are. Example: Rather than just say, the noise of the D700 is more "filmic", I can tell you that's because it is more monochromatic - where the D850 noise is not. After shooting the 200mm f/2 - I realized what most people already have said in print and on TH-cam: It's a unique lens - for bokeh, for sharpness, for weight, and price point, just to name a few. But I now believe what makes the 200mm f/2 so unique is this plus the fact that it tends to render images that look more "real" because of the potential for "dimensionality" shot wide open. Yes, you get subject separation from a smooth background, but you also can get more "3D Pop" and optical illusion of at least 2 dimensions with rounded structures that make it feel like the image is more alive. I can't get that with a 70-200mm f/2.8, a 180mm f/2.8, or the 105mm f/1.4. When you see it repeatedly (easier to focus on the mirrorless Z9 and faster as well) - it is clear why this lens was different. Point is, even if you don't appreciate why, you still can love the IQ and appreciate the end result. It's just nice to understand a bit more so you can communicate it and talk about it with people that know less, or more! Thanks for your comment.

    Hello Nick, as always it’s good to see you and Dexter (the producer/director of the show). Congratulations on getting a new/old toy, I’m sure you’re going to enjoy it, I can see it in your face. You know that I’m not very fond of “old things”, at 99 she still comes over and drinks my wine. You mentioned about the possibility of getting an X-T5 (when and if it’s released), what would make you upgrade to it from the X-T4? Before you answer that, let me tell you that I’m very happy with the X-T4, especially now that I got the XF33 f/1.4, which I believe that it’s better than my f/2 primes and my two zooms. The only reason I would upgrade to the X-T5 would be focus accuracy, an improved focusing speed would be nice (but not a must), I don’t usually shoot very fast moving “things”, but focus accuracy definitely needs to be improved, I’m constantly having to switch to manual focus. As usual, my comment went too long, be well, stay safe and I hope that it stops raining so that you can go out and “play” with the new toy.

      an X-T5? Well, in the wake of Alan's latest video, I would still like a few more MP for my landscape work - just to bring out that last bit of detail and aid with cropping. So if there is a MP bump to 40 or so I'll get one - otherwise I'll stick with my X-T4, get the 50-140 and 70-300 to go with my existing lenses (10-24, 16 and 35) and be done :-)

      I loved my D90 and sold it to go to the D7100. I appreciated the extra resolution but missed the D90 dearly. I’ve since gone to the D700, I don’t think I’ll be going back. Highly recommend

      I used a Sony Nex 6 as my first interchangeable lens camera, it's one of the few small mirrorless cameras that have a truly good build quality and since it's early Sony mirrorless the images take on a softer, more filmic look than newer Sony sensors do and is an amazing street photography camera too since it's small. It's got enough buttons and a fairly large grip for it's size and class and is very capable and often overlooked so you'll find a good deal

      well you should get marginally better low-lght performance due to the lower pixel density, but then the image processor is older in the 700. I'm not a low-light high ISO shooter. maybe someone else will see this who van answer better than I can.

    • @duringthemeanwhilst

      Hi William
      Great choice on the D700 - you will love it 🙂
      on the lens front, anything with a Nikon F Mount will fit. The choice is limitless with lenses from Nikon and various other 3rd parties like Tamron and Sigma.
      When I had my first D700, I teamed it with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 lens.
      something like one of these:
      www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/tamron-sp-24-70mm-f-2-8-di-vc-usd-nikon-fit
      If you're just getting into photography a standard zoom is a good choice until you kind of know what direction you want to go in and then get a more specialist lens for that genre.
      Another good first prime (so not a zoom) lens is a Nikon 50mm f1.8.
      www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/nikon-af-nikkor-50mm-f-1-8/sku-1587876
      Just make sure you get a NIKON F MOUNT. Do not buy any of their newer Z mount mirrorless lenses - they will not work on a D700.
      good luck and if you've any more questions don't be afraid to ask here :-)

    You cannot compare the Nikon d700 with any device, the colors are clearly superior, the d700 is a masterpiece of photography, there is no such device ever made. The colors are absolutely fantastic on the Nikon d700, there is no comparison with other cameras, I've tried them all, sony, panasonic, canon, Nikon d750, d810, d 850, z 6, absolutely all, the Nikon d700 has direct and real colors , there is no longer such a camera, I'm only talking about JpGs. They are all toys compared to the Nikon D700, the difference is huge!
