i have been using this lens on my d850 for over a year, used it on alot of landscape, street, portrait and group photography... I have not seen any poor image quality with the 45.7MP.. I need to know how you measure IQ...
I use this lens on my D3s. I used this setup at the 2019 D23 event and it was so fun to take pictures with. It was heavy slinging this around for hours and around crowds but there is something about using this combination in this environment with the colors and distance I was shooting in within the huge halls. All in all it was a blast. Photographing with the D3s and this lens was fun to me and that's better than using mirrorless. The feeling of the mechanics of the mirror flipping and hearing it go, it talks to you and feels alive. With this lens it was art in motion and that's part of the experience while photographing, making it very fun.
The D3s and 28-300 were my first kit in 2010. I still have the lens but now have the D4s and D5. Gorgeous cameras. I also have a Z6II but I prefer to avoid it.
The D700 with the 28-300 lens was my main travel combo for a long time. I even took it with me to Bolivia and ended up selling A LOT of the prints I made. Fantastic video!
I have a D700, and the lens I leave on it most of the time is the older 28-105 f3.5-4.5 AF-D zoom. This lens is sharp, has little to no distortion, and has a useful macro feature. It renders colors beautifully. Best of all, you can buy a clean copy for $100 US. You don't get the long end like you do the 28-300, and you don't get VR, but it's a great option as well if you don't need those things.
I have been shooting Nikon since the D200 and finally 'upgraded' to a D750 a couple of years ago and love it. However I needed a body for work and was given $300 to find one. I chose the D700 instantly and found a beat up example with 150k clicks on the shutter and it still performs outstandingly. Love it.
You asked what lenses I use on my D700 - here is my list: AF Nikkor 18-35mm 1:3.5-4.5D AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1:3.5-4.5G AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6D Since I do mostly landscape work now - I know these might not be the best lenses - but this is what I acquired as my kids played sports and I was using them to capture those moments. So the budget was the key component as to what I could purchase. Now that the kids are grown - I have grandkids to capture - but landscapes are still my focus so I would appreciate some feedback/advice as to what I might make as the next best lens to acquire for landscapes.
I use a 35mm 1.8 DX lens on my D700. I might get a true 35mm full frame lens, but I am not in a hurry because this DX lens does what I want it to do. There is only slight vignetting wide open that disappears with a small crop. For the price you cannot beat it. My two D700's are my main cameras and I love the 12MP sensor because it's ideal for shooting portraits without having to do too much skin smoothing and retouching. Really a sweet spot between color and sharpness. Never had a complaint from a client.
I used this lens for years on my D 700 and had great family and vacation pictures. This summer I took the 28 -300 and put it on my D850 I could not believe how clear how vibrant and how great the pictures were. Glad to see someone else promotes and likes the 28-300 lens.
same here.. It's the only lens on my d850... hate swapping lens outside in the elements.. don't wanna mess my sensor or drop a lens or lose something in the middle of a shoot.. this lens is amazing to me.. nikonrumors.com/2010/10/24/nikon-24-120mm-f4g-ed-vr-vs-nikon-28-300mm-f3-5-5-6-ed-vr.aspx/
Marvelous review! I have used the D700/28-300 mm lens combination for the last 8-10 years and I absolutely truly believe that lens was made for that body. This combination produces stunning results.
The micron size per pixel is the secret on nearly all cameras. The micron size here is 8 versus 4 on Z6/D750 etc. The 8 is a fat micron size which gathers a ton more natural tone/color etc. So it mimics film well due to how it gathers light in that micron size. Along with the algorithms help it's ability of overall capture. This my all time favorite digital Nikon.
Yes the D-700 is legend camera and one of my very favourites ! I took it to USA and presented my D-700 with the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 to one of my brothers who loves portrait photography like I do. Till this day he uses this combo and loves it! BTW I've tried a few times to help your channel here with a fixed monthly donation to support your Chanel using PayPal but after each attempt it doesn't go through.
Hey Will. Another awesome video. I purchased the D700 after watching one of your earlier videos this year in like new condition. It is a beast. I have it paired with the Nikkor 35-70mm 2.8D which adds to the weight of the camera. I also have the 80-200 that too is a beast as you probably already know. I definitely will be contributing to the education of these videos. Thank U and appreciate your willingness to share your personal knowledge with all of us. Merry Christmas.
I have my d 700 paired with the 35 to 70 f 2.8 and a battery pack, and it's 5 lbs. I like the d lenses also, I can used them on my sony A 7 and a 6000. I found a clean d 700 with a little over 1,300 clicks on it. I also have a d 300s, I love them both because of the controls on the body. J
Totally agree. This lens came as a kit when I bought my D700 many years ago, which I still have and use. I recently went to Europe for a month and I took my Z6,FTZ adaptor and 28-300 lens. All the pictures look great and I never wanted for any other lens. It really is a great all in one travel lens, albeit with the inherent compromises that come with it.
I agree…I love walking around with an all in one lens…do you have a suggestion for a walk around lens for the d800e where the lens resolution matches the 36mp sensor…I couldn’t help myself $650.00 less than 7k actuations.
Great video Will. love seeing the clap bro, beginning and end! I remember when the D700 first came out. It quickly became a favorite camera for many Nikon pro photographers. It still has that same magic years later. You're absolutely right about the 28-300 lens. When I look at reviews or online comments about that lens people either think it's a good lens or they think it's a piece of junk. All of here in this community really appreciate your honest, unbiased content that you put out Will. You are giving us all great info, tips, inspiration, and positive motivation without the sales pitch that many other TH-cam channels have. That's what keeps us all coming back for more and that's whats drawing in new subscribers. Thanks Will for another great video brother!
depends on what you wanna shoot.. if you want the freedom to shoot landscape, street, group, portrait, long range then 28-300, if you want to do more video than photography then 24-70 f4 nikonrumors.com/2010/10/24/nikon-24-120mm-f4g-ed-vr-vs-nikon-28-300mm-f3-5-5-6-ed-vr.aspx/
Clap at the end! Is that going to be the new thing? Love the continual message that it's not the gear, it's your craft. The truth can only be said so many different ways. It may seem repetitive, but it's the truth, thanks for spreading that, for keeping it real and yet keeping it positive. I can tell from the comments that you have inspired so many of us to see the world new again, with the enthusiasm that we had when we first started taking pictures. THANKS!
I think I’m adding it in the beginning AND the end 😂😂😂. For real though, THANK YOU. It feels great to know I have so many people who resonate with my message. Such a great community of people here. It’s amazing
Amen! I bought my 28-300 last year and it has made traveling so much easier. I. usually carry a 50mm 1.8d incase I go into lower light or portrait situations. My D700 is often my second body, great with a prime or the 70-200. I'll concede that the mirror flap is loud, but the images are beautiful.
Hi Will .. how would you compare the 24-120 F4 VR for picture quality ? .. if you had to grab one of these 2 lenses to run out of the door with on your D700 which one would it be ? .. I also have a D700 and Z6 .. best body combo in my opinion as well
I have a D7200 DX and use the Nikon 18-300 f3.5-5.6. What an awesome all round travel lenses. When I got the Z6, I bought the 24-70 f4 and the 28-300. Use them all the time and very satisfied.
Didn’t the D3 have that same image sensor? I picked up a D3 over a D700 for the build and dual card slots. I use my D3 as a walk around camera, too. I use a 35mm f/2D with it. It’s perfect for me.
The D700 was introduced after the D3 (as a more compact and affordable alternative) and they shared the same sensor and AF. I bought my D3 back in 2008 and never owned a D700.
Wow. I'm gobsmacked. I used this combo and also with a D3s for years doing celebs and news. I went through some old pics the other day for my website and the best quality photos I had, even up until today, were taken with the D700 & 24-70 2.8.The look from the D700 still makes it the best digital camera I ever used. Now I use the Sony A7III with 24-240mm.Same as the 28-300mm.But kinda digital looking, it is just different.Certainly doesn't look as good.Fact.Love this channel keeping it real.I google other photographers names (big hair knows photo) not one byline.hmmm.I think a lot of amateurs are influenced by gear channels. It has nothing to do with photography or earning a living. Big up.
If you have studied art, you might know that one of Leonardo DaVinci's original techniques when he was an apprentice, was to NOT make everything sharp especially the outlines of the face and hair. He recognized that SHARP EDGES are not what people really see. At the time ( 1460's), the trend was everything sharp, Sound familiar. The primes I use with the same softness around the edges of faces that I enjoy,
I'm getting ready to buy the D700 just because it's such a great classic DSLR. I already have the 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 G lens so hope it performs as well as the 28-300mm.
I hate to tell you that the 70-300 will not perform nearly as well as the 28-300. The D700 was the first Nikon I ever used, a wonderful camera, basically nearly the same as a D3. I don't have a 700 but I have had several Nikons I pretty much liked all of them except for the D300. I thought the D800 with the higher megapixel count was better than the 700 ecept for low light, I think the D850 is the first camera I have had that matches the low light on the D700. i have used the 28-300 on my Z9 and it is very usable. It isn't as sharp as several other lenses but it is sharp enoungh in the center. When you are out in the field trying to get some good landscapes, that wide aoom range really is handy. It definitely has soem focus fall off on the edges but we shoot for the center and the edges are often meaningless. I usually keep the 28-300 on the Z7 and the 24-120 f:4 on the Z9. the Nikon 85:1.8 is perfect now for the D850 where it lives most of the time. I have a lot of money in lenses. Just had to have the trinity and now seldom use any of them. I like the Tamron 15-35 better than the Nikon 14-24 and whle i have kept the 70-200 because it's F2.8 but I never use it. That range is completely covered by the 28-300. I so enjoyed the D700 I have been thinking of putting one back in my case, avery fine camera indeed.
I already had the 28-300mm as a travel lens for my D750. Listening to this video about the D700 and then reading up on it starting me looking. I found one in almost mint condition with a low shutter count at a great price. I am now waiting for it to arrive and looking forward to using it with the 28-300mm. I carry a camera with me everywhere too.
The Monochrome Memoirs I’ve been using the D700 since it arrived and paired with the 28-300mm. I see exactly what you are talking about in this video. The colors are fantastic. It performs well in low light. I could talk about this camera all day. It’s only drawback for me is it’s heavy. It won’t be going on long trips with me, but that doesn’t mean I won’t keep it close by ready to use.
Great video...I have two D700's (because if one dies well.....I have another) and I've never had any desire for any other Nikon full frame. I absolutely love the D700. I have the 28-300 but I mostly use my 24-70 and 70-200 2.8's on the D700's. I actually, mostly, use the 28-300 on my D300s unless I'm just walking around casually then I might put it on the 700. I've never once had anyone complain that there's not enough resolution with the 12MP and the 2.8 lenses and I've shot several weddings with them. Again...enjoyed the video. Thanks.
I still use my D700 for shooting gigs/festivals as well as other things.I use a D5500 alongside it at these events which works well for me. 35mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 Nikon lens give me very good results.
I’m really into this sort of look back at great older cameras and lenses, and hope you’ll think about doing more of these. We can pick these up used pretty cheap, they’re a lot of fun, and sometimes - like the D700 shooting portraits (same is probably true about Canon’s 12.8 MP original 5D) - there’s a use case where they’re still super relevant and fun to use today. I appreciate your insight into where some of these older bodies and lenses we might have lying around, or might be able to pick up pretty easy, can still stand out. Thanks for doing this one.
I have had the 28-300 for many years and love it. It is a great lens for shooting the kids running around in the back yard. I also use it on vacation. I travel light with 1 camera body and 1 or 2 lenses. The reach is perfect. I have it on my D750 and occasionally on my Z6.
So I just bought this lens for my z6ii and Ftz ! I know it’s compatible so it’s said with the z system and adapter yet can’t seem to get the eye focus areas on af-c to work! Seems ok on AF-S single point and dynamic Andy ideas yes the lens is on auto and the VR is on ! Thanks
The way you feel about the Nikon Z50 is how I feel about the Nikon D5500 and Nikon D5600. And both the Nikon D750 and Nikon 28-300 are on my shopping list.
Recently I bought a D3 which I was hoping it would be a decent camera. Oh how wrong was I.. It is incredible, from build quality to image quality. It is absolutely superb and I could not be happier. I believe the sensor more or less is the same as the D700 so I can imagine the quality of it. I really enjoy the 50mm 1.4 as a walk around lens. I realise that the D3 isn't exactly a good walk around camera :D
For work, I bought a D3 and a D700 in 2008-2009 and the only odd thing is that the D700 has a 95% viewfinder while the D3 VF is 100%. Which is not a problem. My walk-around was and is the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8. But I’m still breaking myself in to the Z7.
The Monochrome Memoirs - The Z7 has been used for just about every kind of shooting I do. This past summer I used the FTZ and various telephoto lenses to shoot the Jones Beach NY air show and the results were mind blowing. When it gets warmer, I’ll be trying that getup for birding. If I ever went nuts and went back to weddings, I’d dust off the D3 and D700 because of the colors.
your wedding work is beautiful...agree on the D700! ...I recently bought the D700 again, loved it back in the day and looking forward to shooting with it again.I have a friend who works for Nikon and kept his D700 for the way it renders people (skin)...skin tones look on the warmer side from what I've seen.
Having used the lens on a d800 i was a convert, the form factor and the versatility were amazing. The files. from the d800 probably do bring out some of the compromises of the lens, i still found the latitude annd overall color from the d800. more than made up for it. I have also a Canon 35-350, which is probably still for me the gold standard for travel lenses, despite being pretty big and heavy. If you have ever used that one would be keen to hear your thoughts, as i don't see. any real alternatives between the two, when looking for a 10x zoom.
Hi, Is it a good idea to ditch my kit lenses - AF-P DX 18-55mm 3.5/5.6 VR and AF-P 70-300mm 4.5/6.3 VR ED - for a: FX AF-S 28-300mm 3.5/5.6 VR (offer for $250 USD)? I have a D3400 a 50mm 1.8G and a DX 35mm 1.8G I like taking photos anywhere and I mainly shoot animal (birds, dogs, etc.)
Here to support you! i loved the patreon shout out last video haha just felt good. I finished my first wedding and just sent out the finished product to my client and she absolutely loved it, i have a lot to thank to you. Your tips on the Z6 are fantastic, i can't wait to keep growing my brand for sure. Much love!
I got a D700 a few months ago. It goes with my D7000 very nicely. I don't want variable aperture zooms. Messing with my exposures, already went thru that in the past. I love prime lenses. Current kit; 85g, 50g and 24g. Just got a Helios 44-3 adapted to Nikon F mount with 16 blades! It is 58mm f2. Got it from Retro Foto House. Having fun is part of the photography world.
You mentioned you've put the 28-300 on the Z6. How does that work for video? Is it noisy with the autofocus motors and ftz adapter? Could you vlog with it? I'm thinking about getting one. Thanks.
Now this is good content!!! About that sensor, the D3 used the same one and I'm almost certain it was made by Sony... Those big pixels are freaking awesome!!!
I picked up one at a camera store in San Francisco last October. It is my go to lens for a Nikon d800. I stick with the 28 to 300mm zoom and run it like a stolen car. First rule is to keep it on you as much as possible for a day. I paid 550 dollars for an excellent condition lens.
Hi ! I discovered photo with hybrid caméras, I love them and im a z shooter. But I wanted to learn other expérience, and because you have good advices, I listened to you and bought d700 with this 28/300 for ridiculous price. As à camera to shoot my family life. Im crazy happy about it, so a big thank you man
I really like your videos and your passion for D700. Quick question, how do you rate the Nikon D610 purely for image quality, color rendition etc vs D700. I have both and when I shoot jpegs, both being on vivid “picture style” the greens, reds and blues look similar with saturation, but.... I would really like to know your opinion between these 2 cameras , purely for IQ. Thanks
i love using vintage lenses on my d700. I've converted a few pre AI nikkors such as the auto H 50mm f/2 which was hailed as the japanese summicron, and the amazing 4 elements in 4 groups 135mm 2.8 nikkor Q. The 85 1.8D is fantastic as well. Another one everyone should have is the nikkor 50mm 1.4AI.
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs I even use the 35mm 1.8G dx lens on the d700 in FX mode albeit with some minor vignetting but damn does it render beautifully and can be had these days for like 120$
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR Autofocus IF Lens _ Is this the same lens you have featured in this video. It sounded like you were describing a DX lens and I couldn't find an exact description in you post.
I prefer to walk around with the Z50 and 50-250 for sure, it’s incredible. But the D700 is my go to when I don’t mind the weight and I know I’m going to shoot in a specific place with really good light or shooting portraits!
28-300 is one of the most underrated Nikkor lens ever... actually Nikon Marketing somehow has positioned it very low right from the beginning ! Tried it again on my Z6 recently (since there is no Z equivalent) and i did end up with enjoyable images ! And no one told me "hey you've been probably using a low quality lens on those ones !!" :)
Spot on, when you said "its easy to correct its color". Indeed, there seemed to be no other body that is near the output of D700. Having 12 mgpx is easy on my workflow.
Just got my first pro camera z6! And I was so confused on which lens to get and since I'm going to be traveling for a while, and your story on to have your camera ready to shoot in any situation with you that's exactly how I feel like I want to be. Thank you so much I really appreciate that video it was like the perfect video I needed to watch 🙏🙏🙏
As someone who uses an even older Nikon variant (D200) I’d have to agree with the film like appearance in lower megapixel sensors (my favourite was the D300 which I stupidly sold some time ago).. I think I’ll go back to it some day 😊
I have a D300 and a D700 (just picked it up with 9300 shutter actuations) and I really love them both. Don't know what it is about them. They're both old as heck but man! Love working with them.
That 50 1.8d is also a legend, I have that one as well! I haven’t reviewed that Tammy yet but funny you asked because I was thinking about picking one up. Do you have it?
I now use a Sony A9 & A7Riv for my serious/professional work. I sold all my Nikon bodies including D300 & D810, along with all my pro glass. But I could not sell my D700, too attached to it's feel in the hand, robustness and quality. I still use it with the 50mm f/1.8G and 24-120mm f/4G for pleasure shoots and monochromatic work in 2024.
Regarding the D700's "NC81338L" sensor (from Matsushita, if my sources are correct), the Nikon D3 (which came out a year before the D700) has the same sensor, but Nikon's color science renders a tiny bit different on the D700. Of the two, the D700 jpegs are the nicest, but the D3 is no slouch either 😊
Can't afford another lens right now but when my d700 comes in a couple of weeks I might try my old 80-200 afs 2.8 d on it. I'll be interested to compare the images between the d700 and my d750...
You will be surprised! You will love your D700 much more than your D750 and you will not able to spot the reason. One of the reasons will be this number ..D700 (8.5 microns) Vs Nikon D750 (5.9 microns). The explanation (from the fb group Nikon D700/The Legend) "If you understand what exactly happens in a camera sensor, then you will fully realize the reason why many photographers like me went back from our shinning newer cameras to the Legendary Nikon D700. So...... We need to go deep in the technology of the sensors in order to understand how great the sensor of the D700 is. There are some factors that separate the D700 sensor of any other Nikon camera sensor, including the D850 and mirrorless Z6 and Z7 ones. About D700 colors: What makes the D700 so special about its color rendition (including excellent skin tones) is its unique CFA together with a unique algorithm which applied to its sensor.(different than the D3 and D3s ones) After the D700, Nikon altered CFA filters in order to boost high ISO performance and fit a bigger number of mpx in the same size sensor. But this required making the filter less discriminating. The color discrimination of the specific CFA allows the separation as a unique shade of any single basic color. Modern cameras lighter CFAs simply cluster similar shades of a single color. So, we are coming now to the most important off all the factors which called "Tonal gain" Tonal gain is what makes the D700 shots so special in dimensionality and depth. THE LOW PHOTOSITE DENSITY OF THE D700 SENSOR PRODUCES HIGH NATIVE GAIN WHICH PROVIDES EVERY SINGLE IMAGE WITH EXTRA DEPTH AND MICRO-CONTRAST, (3D Pop) The explanation: This is the D700's sensor pixel area (Photosite):71.70µm2 and this is-a an example-the the D850 sensor pixel area:18.88µm2 That means that the D700 sensor has 279% larger pixel area. So, let's see why this makes the difference in dimensionality and depth we see on many D700 shots. Light is a signal. This represents the tonality (colors, contrasts, details) of the subject. Its strength is defined by shutter speed and aperture. Pixel area (Photosite) is an antenna that receives the signal so it affects how much light per pixel can be gathered. The larger it is, the more light can be collected by a single pixel. BUT, The size of the photosite defines its native signal gain as well. For a camera to record the maximum amount of micro-contrast and depth off a good lens, it requires low photosite density for higher native gain. Tonal gain is NOT a dynamic range. The higher the native gain, the bigger is the gap between the peak of the gain and the noise floor over the same signal.- Photosites exist at various densities within the size of the camera sensor. Higher megapixel sensors have a higher density and lower native gain. The ISO defines the applied gain on the photosite so that it can receive a weaker signal. Increasing the gain raises the noise floor. The Analog to Digital Converter (A/D converter) converts the gained signal into digital information. The quality of the conversion is influenced by Bit Depth. The Signal to Noise Ratio firmware (SNR) separates the signal (the detail) from the noise (the noise) right before making the RAW file. If the converted gain is low, it will have a harder time figuring out the difference, therefore removing more signal. So the quality of the TONAL GAIN matters greatly final image-making. The current ideal photosite density is 12mp for the size of a full-frame sensor (Nikon D700 - 8.5 µm is ideal) This is a short list with some full-frame cameras and their pixel pitch. Full Frame Sensors Cameras Nikon D750 (5.9 microns) - 2014 14 bit Canon 6D (6.5 microns) - 2012 - 14 bit Canon 1Dx (6.9 microns) - 2011 14 bit Canon 5Dii (6.4 microns) - 2008 14 bit Nikon D3/D3s/D700 (8.5 microns) - 2008 - 14bit Canon 5D (8.1 microns) - 2005 - 12 bit This link compares the pixel pitch of various cameras
i am currently thinking getting it for my "new" used D750 have a prime 50 F1.4 youngnuo will sell my old D90 and 18-55 or maybe IR modify it still not shure :D i think the mentioned lens has great value with VR and fast quiet autofocus making it usable for video even more intresting. nice video
Thanks for posting this vid, I've just bought a D700 with AI-s Lenses, 20, 28, 50P, 105 & 135, but i'm thinking of getting a zoom hence the search on you-tube. It sounds like a ideal landscape lens, where I only need to carry the (brick) D700, Gitzo and a single lens as a lightweight set up. Your thoughts ? Cheers Fon (Wales)
it's about pixel size, 12MP at full frame gives a pixel size of 72. That's way better than everything else. Resolution just gives room to crop or print larger size.
Hi Will, great video! I have never bought a super zoom lens. But after watching your video, it could be a good option if you want to travel light. Most of the time, I have with me two cameras: one Z7 and one Z6. And on each camera, I mount a prime: one wide angle lens (24 or 35 mm) and one portrait lens (50 or 85 mm). When I take a trip somewhere, I generally use the Nikkor Z 24-70 mm f/2.8 S: it’s versatile and at the same time I can benefit from the f/2.8 aperture. By the way, the Nikkor Z 24-70 mm f/2.8 S is such an amazing lens. So sharp, so quick to focus and very lightweight! These Z lenses are so good!!!
I really enjoy your vids, I used the D700 yesterday at an anniversary lunch with a 24-85 3.5-4.5 vr and was very impressed. I do have a 70-300 vr g for the long end, but a one lens solution may better suit for travel. Maybe add a light nifty fifty. Love the D700, and I’m amazed what the large eyes 12mp produces.
I use the 28-300 on my d850 after selling my d700. I really love it. I have used it a small amount on my z6 and seemed great. It’s a excellent lens if you only can bring one lens.
Absolute truth my man. It’s a really great lens to replace them all when you just want to capture stuff throughout the day. Can’t wait for the Z super zooms to hit the scene
The Monochrome Memoirs yeah I agree 100% I only have one S lens for the Z. The 35mm. It’s unreal! I have lots of other primes but f mount. I really think the z6 is really underrated. The glass for the z is extremely underrated.
Fucking right! Anyone who says Z glass is bad isn’t really using it. I was thinking about fros review of the 35 right when it came out. Lmao. Imagine listening to someone who only used the lens for a day or two for a review then says it’s just “meh”. Unreal, they are absolutely phenomenal
The Monochrome Memoirs yesssssss!!!! These gear elitists anymore just bug the SHIT outta me. Lmao. I listen to the folks using the gear day in and day out. But I use my gear to make money so I don’t need some non user “unboxing” review. 😂😂
Dude my first “pro” camera purchase was a used D3 in 2012. I still have and use it. The D750 and Z6 are my mains now, but there’s something about that camera and it’s shutter click tho.
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs TH-cam changed the upload process, you used to have to enable automatic CC Closed Captions for the deaf and hard of hearing during the upload, but now it's supposed to be automatic. If you go to your studio, in the upper right corner is a ? and type in Closed Captions in the search bar it lists how you can make sure they translate automatically and a list of reasons why it does not. I know it's a lot of hassle but almost all of your videos have the CC button on them so those of us that are deaf or hard of hearing can follow along.
In this video I discuss my thoughts on the best all around travel lens for the Nikon D700. Hope this helps! - Will
i have been using this lens on my d850 for over a year, used it on alot of landscape, street, portrait and group photography... I have not seen any poor image quality with the 45.7MP.. I need to know how you measure IQ...
I just bought me a D700 in mint condition with an 85mm f/1.4 omg i love it, beautiful camera too
You’ll love it!
Where dos you get it?
I want one
I’ve just bought a pretty much mint D800 and just bought a 85mm f1.8 and a 35mm f1.8!!!
I’ll never part with my D700.
Such an epic camera that eclipses many new cameras in terms of image quality.
There’s magic in that sensor.
I feel the same way with my Df.
So true!
DF was a legend too
I use this lens on my D3s.
The Nikon D700 images are amazing still worth buying today.
Absolute truth my friend!
Love it.
You asked what lenses I use on my D700 - here is my list:
AF Nikkor 18-35mm 1:3.5-4.5D
AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1:3.5-4.5G
AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6D
Since I do mostly landscape work now - I know these might not be the best lenses - but this is what I acquired as my kids played sports and I was using them to capture those moments. So the budget was the key component as to what I could purchase. Now that the kids are grown - I have grandkids to capture - but landscapes are still my focus so I would appreciate some feedback/advice as to what I might make as the next best lens to acquire for landscapes.
how's the output of that combo ?
Just bought one 28-300 for my D610. For wider, a 16mm F2.8. For high quality, bokeh and low light, a trio of 35, 50 and 85mm F1.8 primes if needed
I have a question. I just purchased a used D700 my first FX Nikon. Do you have a video on how you set yours up?
hah
Loved my old D700. Picked up a lightly used D3S recently for sports. Amazing camera for not much more than a new D5600
D3s is still killer for sports!
How funny. That's just the combination I'm carrying around every day. And even if I will upgrade soon I will definetly keep that set as a backup.
Good informative video but where is the slideshow of the combo?
You are speaking my language. My d700 will never be sold. Best ever.
I love this lens. I use it on D700, D300 and D810. It is sharp, it focuses fast enough, VR works just fine.
I bought one for my D3 back in 2010, but had not used it much. Instead, D300 with a 18-200 & 10.5 as my travel camera kit.
Great comment. Welcome to the channel!
Dude that 80-200 is so sick!!
J
The 80-200 is a beautiful lens but you must hit the gym before taking the camera out with this lens mounted on it! 😂
Thanks for watching Greg!
Which would you choose between the 28-300 F mount or the 24-70 f4 Z mount kit lens?
depends on what you wanna shoot.. if you want the freedom to shoot landscape, street, group, portrait, long range then 28-300, if you want to do more video than photography then 24-70 f4
nikonrumors.com/2010/10/24/nikon-24-120mm-f4g-ed-vr-vs-nikon-28-300mm-f3-5-5-6-ed-vr.aspx/
The mirror slap is certainly worth the legendary colors!
Hi Will ..
how would you compare the 24-120 F4 VR for picture quality ? .. if you had to grab one of these 2 lenses to run out of the door with on your D700 which one would it be ?
That 18-300 is so excellent as well. Was thinking about reviewing it with the Z50
I still run the f2.8 holy trinity heavy but hard to beat. The 24 to 70 f2.8 is truly amazing.
Big up.
Love this comment Steve!! You are the MAN
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs I think I will keep the publication percentages of the 28-300 compared to primes to myself.Hey it's business : ) Great channel.
Steve Bagness hahah love it. Yep this lens is a legend for sure
The clap is back! Yes! 😎 Thanks for yet again a great video. 👍
Thanks Thomas!
Can't wait to get my D700!
You’re gonna love that beast 😍😍
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs I would love to see your shots with it!
Jo Jo Productions check out my IG bro! Have a bunch of D700 stuff there
If you have studied art, you might know that one of Leonardo DaVinci's original techniques when he was an apprentice, was to NOT make everything sharp especially the outlines of the face and hair. He recognized that SHARP EDGES are not what people really see. At the time ( 1460's), the trend was everything sharp, Sound familiar. The primes I use with the same softness around the edges of faces that I enjoy,
Great video and looking forward to this combo for my walk around. It simplifies and allows you to be more spontaneously creative.
I am glad you made the point that it is not suited to a camera like a D850 or D810. I hate how people simply praise a product without making caveats.
Thank you a great review I just bought it works great with my D 800
I already had the 28-300mm as a travel lens for my D750. Listening to this video about the D700 and then reading up on it starting me looking. I found one in almost mint condition with a low shutter count at a great price. I am now waiting for it to arrive and looking forward to using it with the 28-300mm. I carry a camera with me everywhere too.
Sara you have to check back in with me once you shoot with it then check the files. I already know what you’re going to say but still let me know 😂
The Monochrome Memoirs I’ve been using the D700 since it arrived and paired with the 28-300mm. I see exactly what you are talking about in this video. The colors are fantastic. It performs well in low light. I could talk about this camera all day. It’s only drawback for me is it’s heavy. It won’t be going on long trips with me, but that doesn’t mean I won’t keep it close by ready to use.
Sara Jennings thats exactly how I feel. It’s a beast so i only bring it when I’m going out to intentionally shoot. Legendary camera for sure!
This lens is good enough for Jay Maisel to be his only lens, good enough for you. And he uses it on a z series now, with no complaints
Thanks.

you are so refreshing to listen to .Thank you
I still use my D700 for shooting gigs/festivals as well as other things.I use a D5500 alongside it at these events which works well for me.
Definitely will Eric!
On my D700 is a Tamron 24-70mm 2.8. But since I have a Z7 I use the D700 rarely. The operation with the Z7 is much more intuitive and makes more fun.
The Z series really is a blast to use, no argument there!
I have had the 28-300 for many years and love it. It is a great lens for shooting the kids running around in the back yard. I also use it on vacation. I travel light with 1 camera body and 1 or 2 lenses. The reach is perfect. I have it on my D750 and occasionally on my Z6.
The tokina 100mm 2.8 works wonderfully on the 700!
Living the Legend D700!
Love your channel.. what lens would you suggest for a fashion show. ?
Just got the 28-300mm yesterday (it's slow so quite limiting but OK as a walkaround lens) and now I am on the market for a D700 hehe.
I dropped my d750 last Friday and replaced it with the d700 today. Got an excellent copy from Japan with 57k clicks.
It is amazing!
Legend!
So true! Absolute magic!
Ken Konard that’s my only gripe with the d700, I’m so used to full coverage with the Z6. How are you liking the Z7?
Thanks so much, really appreciate it
Having used the lens on a d800 i was a convert, the form factor and the versatility were amazing. The files. from the d800 probably do bring out some of the compromises of the lens, i still found the latitude annd overall color from the d800. more than made up for it.
I have a D3400 a 50mm 1.8G and a DX 35mm 1.8G
I like taking photos anywhere and I mainly shoot animal (birds, dogs, etc.)
Much love!
Thank you so much brother!!
D700 with 50mm 1.8G & 85mm 1.8G is a great combo also.
Sure is!
You mentioned you've put the 28-300 on the Z6. How does that work for video? Is it noisy with the autofocus motors and ftz adapter? Could you vlog with it? I'm thinking about getting one. Thanks.
I tried your suggestion; d700 and the 28-300 is heavy but worth it. The images are wonderful
Now this is good content!!!
About that sensor, the D3 used the same one and I'm almost certain it was made by Sony... Those big pixels are freaking awesome!!!
Hell yes brother!!!
Totally agree, there’s some incredible glass out there m. Pairing it with the 12mp is so so sweet
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs I even use the 35mm 1.8G dx lens on the d700 in FX mode albeit with some minor vignetting but damn does it render beautifully and can be had these days for like 120$
Chris Emerick it’s crazy how good that 35 is. People mistake it’s low price for bad IQ, totally wrong!
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs yesssss! So much man!
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR Autofocus IF Lens _ Is this the same lens you have featured in this video. It sounded like you were describing a DX lens and I couldn't find an exact description in you post.
Great video Will; which do you prefer to walk around with - D700 with 28-300 or Z50 with its 50-250 VR lens?
I prefer to walk around with the Z50 and 50-250 for sure, it’s incredible. But the D700 is my go to when I don’t mind the weight and I know I’m going to shoot in a specific place with really good light or shooting portraits!
Does the D700 do in-camera distortion correction with this lens?
No, not a function of this camera.
yes! I have the same lens and camera and the 28-300 and the 105 f2.8 micro are my favorite and most used lenses
I use the 16MP Nikon Df with 28-300mm. This combination is spectacular as well.
The best color in any Nikon I've ever owned....period
Spot on, when you said "its easy to correct its color". Indeed, there seemed to be no other body that is near the output of D700. Having 12 mgpx is easy on my workflow.
Your B&W video is amazing. It would be nice if you could teach it or sell the set up.
I think I’ll go back to it some day 😊
That d300 was a work of art too. Beautiful monochrome photos out of that thing
I have a D300 and a D700 (just picked it up with 9300 shutter actuations) and I really love them both. Don't know what it is about them. They're both old as heck but man! Love working with them.
135mm f2.8 lives on my D700.. awesome lens.
I keep a 50mm 1.8 on my D700!
Have you reviewed the Tamron 18-400?
That 50 1.8d is also a legend, I have that one as well! I haven’t reviewed that Tammy yet but funny you asked because I was thinking about picking one up. Do you have it?
Hello, wondering if you guys could help me with my question: will a 70-200 G2 lens work good on a D700? Thanks in advance!
Juanio Herrera yes yes and YES!
@@amirballardsr thank you so much for getting back to me!
Took your advice and picked up a D700!!
I love my D3S so much. It shares the same sensor as your D700.
The explanation (from the fb group Nikon D700/The Legend)
"If you understand what exactly happens in a camera sensor, then you will fully realize the reason why many photographers like me went back from our shinning newer cameras to the Legendary Nikon D700.
So......
We need to go deep in the technology of the sensors in order to understand how great the sensor of the D700 is.
There are some factors that separate the D700 sensor of any other Nikon camera sensor, including the D850 and mirrorless Z6 and Z7 ones.
About D700 colors:
What makes the D700 so special about its color rendition (including excellent skin tones) is its unique CFA together with a unique algorithm which applied to its sensor.(different than the D3 and D3s ones)
After the D700, Nikon altered CFA filters in order to boost high ISO performance and fit a bigger number of mpx in the same size sensor. But this required making the filter less discriminating.
The color discrimination of the specific CFA allows the separation as a unique shade of any single basic color. Modern cameras lighter CFAs simply cluster similar shades of a single color.
So, we are coming now to the most important off all the factors which called "Tonal gain"
Tonal gain is what makes the D700 shots so special in dimensionality and depth.
THE LOW PHOTOSITE DENSITY OF THE D700 SENSOR PRODUCES HIGH NATIVE GAIN WHICH PROVIDES EVERY SINGLE IMAGE WITH EXTRA DEPTH AND MICRO-CONTRAST, (3D Pop)
The explanation:
This is the D700's sensor pixel area (Photosite):71.70µm2 and this is-a an example-the the D850 sensor pixel area:18.88µm2 That means that the D700 sensor has 279% larger pixel area.
The higher the native gain, the bigger is the gap between the peak of the gain and the noise floor over the same signal.-
Photosites exist at various densities within the size of the camera sensor.
The current ideal photosite density is 12mp for the size of a full-frame sensor (Nikon D700 - 8.5 µm is ideal)
This is a short list with some full-frame cameras and their pixel pitch.
Full Frame Sensors Cameras
Nikon D750 (5.9 microns) - 2014 14 bit
Canon 6D (6.5 microns) - 2012 - 14 bit
Canon 1Dx (6.9 microns) - 2011 14 bit
Canon 5Dii (6.4 microns) - 2008 14 bit
Nikon D3/D3s/D700 (8.5 microns) - 2008 - 14bit

i am currently thinking getting it for my "new" used D750 have a prime 50 F1.4 youngnuo will sell my old D90 and 18-55 or maybe IR modify it still not shure :D
i think the mentioned lens has great value with VR and fast quiet autofocus making it usable for video even more intresting.
nice video
Looking to replace the D700 I sold 7 years ago. Love the 28-300 images from my D850 while in Scotland for 2 weeks last year.
Probably the best F mount super zoom out there!
D700 with the 58mm f1.4 voigtlander is always in my car bag in the passenger seat just in case 😊
I vote for this lens as well!
+1!!!
I always learn something from your channel...Keep the clap.
The clap stays!!
it's about pixel size, 12MP at full frame gives a pixel size of 72.
You’re right brother those S lenses are absolutely out of this world. Can’t wait until they have an S superzoom, but until then the 28-300 is a BEAST!
The Monochrome Memoirs Will, on the new Z lens roadmap, the 24-200mm is listed. It should make a good superzoom for travel!
Pierre-Louis Herin heck yeah man once that’s out I will be picking it up for SURE
12mp is definitely the sweet spot!
I don't understand how a D700 and a 28-300 is a "travel" kit.
It is like traveling with your favorite boat anchor, to go boating in Minnesota.
The Monochrome Memoirs thanks for being real👍🏻 never change!
Dude my first “pro” camera purchase was a used D3 in 2012. I still have and use it. The D750 and Z6 are my mains now, but there’s something about that camera and it’s shutter click tho.
Very much agree. Something special there, no other cameras have it!

Captions?
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs TH-cam changed the upload process, you used to have to enable automatic CC Closed Captions for the deaf and hard of hearing during the upload, but now it's supposed to be automatic. If you go to your studio, in the upper right corner is a ? and type in Closed Captions in the search bar it lists how you can make sure they translate automatically and a list of reasons why it does not. I know it's a lot of hassle but almost all of your videos have the CC button on them so those of us that are deaf or hard of hearing can follow along.
Darren Best Darren thank you so much for bringing this to my attention!!
