This is the best explanation for captions creating table of multilevel figures everyone else is missing the point in explaining this. They keep on explaining the single level caption which even a baby can do lol
Thanks for your positive comments. You're right - the answers are often out there somewhere, but you spend hours searching and putting all the fragmented bits of information together.
Wow, you have explained this so clearly and articulately - an immensely helpful tutorial. I have subscribed and am looking learning more. Thank you :-D
Hi @O2RIV , If I need to number the figures as chapter heading-figure number-figure sub number (i.e. Figure 7-2(a), Figure 7-2(b), Figure 7-3(a), etc.), what will be the best way to do in word?
Hi Md.Hazrat. You can only create a maximum of two levels for your captions. Here is a video that shows you how. th-cam.com/video/44boKjRPG74/w-d-xo.html
at 5:44, when you entered the new rows of headers which changed Header 1 to Header 5, if you notice, the Table 1-A label (under the now Header 5 top-level row) did not change automatically. Is this what needs to be refreshed via F9? Does saving the document not automatically refresh?
Yes, just press Ctrl A to select the entire document, then press F9 to refresh/update all the table caption numbering. The document also updates when you first open it.
After assigning captions to Figures and Tables, I find many table cations changed to Figures and vice versa.Any solution? (I am also using endnote software for bibliography)
Hi Azam. I can't think of any reason why that would happen (aside from the fact that after all these years, Microsoft Word is still buggy). Sorry I can't help further.
Hi Uma... To convert caption text to upper case: 1. On the Home tab, click the launcher in the bottom-right corner of the Styles group to display the Styles sidebar. 2. Locate the 'Caption' style, right-click and choose 'Modify'. 3. Click the 'Format' button in the bottom-left corner of the dialog. 4. Choose 'Font'. 5. Tick 'All Caps'. 6. Click OK twice to exit the dialogs. All your existing and future captions in the current document will now be upper case. [Sorry for the late reply. Your comment was held for review and I just saw it!] Let me know how you go. Thanks, Jason.
Hi Pedro. As long as you are using the Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3 styles throughout your document, when you then add captions and build your table of figures it will all be numbered correctly. If you have numbered your chapters and headings manually, then the captions and table of figures will also need to be controlled manually (which is an arduous process).
Make sure you have assigned the Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3 styles to each heading in your document as this is what is picked up by Microsoft Word to create the Table of Figures. If you do this and assign the table captions and build the Table of Figures as described in the it should be a smooth ride. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks Manash. That's great to hear.
thank you, man. You're saving lives.

Thank you. Saved me hours of right clicking and selecting 'restart numbering'.
Yup!

Thank you Mel for your enthusiastic feedback. Always appreciated. Onwards and upwards!
Useful, but, What if i need to use multi-level numbering that is not linked to the chapter or heading numbers?
You have some flexibility with multilevel numbering in the main body of your document but not with multilevel captions.
thank you very clear & helpful.Cheers
You're welcome. I'm glad you found this video useful.
Thank you :)

how does this works if i have a multilevel chapter scheme already?
