    For all that Rickson has done, he still feels he's not worthy! Amazing to see. That's about 500 years of dedication in that room! 0SS!

    Man Rickson is so humble. He thinks he should wait another 7 years for the red, and we are all like OH SHIT ITS RICKSON!!!! What a great human he is.

      twice_baked potato it's because they skipped him up a degree from 7th-9th and he didn't feel he deserved that (he's quite strict on the time scales you should spend on each belt). Absolute legend regardless and fully deserves that red belt more than anyone practicing BJJ right now

      No kidding I thought he was 8th at the time of promotion. I see. Thanks

    No one on this earth can dispute the belt to Rickson, one aspect that I find good about him having a Red belt at " Such a Young Age " is that he will continue the traditions and keep promoting BJJ for a long time at the top of the food chain so many people will get to see such a legend in the future.

    Time spent is one thing. Proficiency is another. Both can merit promotion. If anyone on this planet is a red belt, it should be Rickson Gracie.
    A humble, confident, and honorable man anywhere you encounter him.

    11:10 The guy who walks in the background and then walks up to the guy with the camera and hugs him is my professor here in Portland, Oregon. His name is Anibal Lobo and he trained directly under Helio Gracie at age 15. As a young man he trained directly under Rickson Gracie until he was a brown belt and then earned his black belt directly under Pedro Sauer. Such a brilliant Jiu Jitsu mind along with so many others in the room.

    I love how the other red belts were like we hear you but you're taking this red belt. I agree with Hickson's want to ensure quality in BJJ but I don't think time in grade is the best way to determine someone's ability. I like the idea that who you get your belt from is as important as the belt itself. They put they're reputation into it so if they think you are ready you are ready.

    I understand Rickson's point HOWEVER Rickson's own father, Helio, has a totally different view on the matter. Helio told the Valente brothers, in a video interview, that promotion was essentially something that was based on his discretion. In other words, when Helio was alive he promoted whomever he wanted to whatever rank he wanted. Helio did not follow a standard when it came to promoting people. If he felt a person deserved a certain rank he would give it to them. It was that simple for Helio.

    • @RalphJacob
      @RalphJacob 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sabakimsg As a blue belt under the Valente Brothers, I am in complete agreement with your point. I don't like it when someone trains in Jiu-Jitsu just to fulfill a set standard like belt promotions. I personally feel that someone who trains this way does not really embody what Jiu-Jitsu is all about. Martial arts take time if not an entire lifetime to master and even the most experienced practitioner tells himself he's still not quite up there.

    Rickson, I hope you keep your word and keep that belt in the right place till the time come. Rules are rules like you said. Imagine all world start to change the system that you father our gran master followed with so honor
    I am black belt too man i know what you did
    But we cannot change the waves in the ocean we just need to surf
    Peace out Ty

    • @Soldier-of-God.
      @Soldier-of-God. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ty Ferro he is wearing it because the other high ranking masters in his family, told him that their own father, would have awarded him the belt. The belt was awarded to him, he did not bestow it upon himself. Therein lays the difference. Yes he is correct in saying that those who have done the exact amount of years of training, as he has should also be at the same rank, or vice versa him at the same rank as them. However his brother Rorion, who is now the highest rank member of their family lineage after their father, Helio Gracie, along with the other top seniors, have all made the decision together. Which was to promote and award the red belt, with the nine dans to Rickson Gracie. In the end he himself said: "What the hell"! As if to say so be it, I accept the honour that you have all bestowed upon me.
      I give you a personal, humble and sincere example, as God my witness. When I was told to grade for my Kyokushin Karate black belt (1st dan), I told my instructor, that I believe I should wait, given I felt I was not ready and deep inside my self worthy to yet be grading for such a rank. My instructor said to me: "Shut up Miguel (not my real name), I am your instructor and I know that you have done the time to be ready to grade for your black belt first dan"! He then said further that he would not be asking anyone to grade for any rank, especially the black belt levels, should he felt they were not ready, in other words competent, worthy and capable to do so. I successfully graded for my black belt first dan in 2012, my second dan in 2014, four years later three weeks ago, now being September 2018 graded successfully again, for my black belt third dan. My point is from my second dan onwards I have accepted without hesitation, not arrogance, my master's decision to grade and accept my ranks, including my most recent third dan. Because I had done the required time for each level, according to our system's grading requirements and also, according to our syllabus and curriculum. I know exactly why Rickson said and why, also how he felt. Because if I may say so myself humbly, I too somewhat similar to him, felt I was not ready, nor worthy to be promoted in my own individual case, to my first degree black belt. Most recently for my third dan black belt, my instructor awarded such a rank to another gentleman and a lady, both my close and esteemed friends from training, the same rank. I personally felt almost emotional, as well as in delirium, when my instructor summoned me up to the front of the class, with the very long speech that my instructor gave, prior to awarding my third dan. He gave a long speech for each of the three of us, who successfully obtained our third dans, as well as for another friend who obtained his second dan, as well as the other student, who graded for his first dan. In the end I feel that it was awarded to him, for which he has no need to feel unworthy of such a rank.

      No they did not. they arent red belts for being the baddest fighters on earth. They are red belts because theyve been teaching and spreading the art of bjj for over 40 years plus. They are now old and some of them have a hard time walking due to years of injuries and they move slower than the young 30 year old stud that fights in the ufc. Dont be silly.

  • @chude6093
    @chude6093 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rickson is right, there has to be standards, and if he doesn't feel he deserves it he should continue wearing the black belt with no shame. There is too much emphasis being put on belts, and not fighting ability, too many people being promoted to "Red" belt master status, and they don't have the time in that Helio did before he got his Red belt. A red belt should be for over fifty years of practice , or more, and something very special. I see guys wearing it, and it isn't right.

    • @tjl4688
      @tjl4688 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helio would have said otherwise. Helio gave out belts when he felt people were ready.
