The Most EXPENSIVE Scene In Pulp Fiction: Scene Breakdown

- Today we break down the iconic Jack Rabbit Slim's scene from Quentin Tarantino's smash 1994 hit- Pulp Fiction. The film follows multiple characters that are seemingly unrelated as their paths intertwine in various ways. At the center of the film is Vincent Vega (John Travolta)- a hitman and enforcer for a local crime boss. Vincent is asked by his employer to take his wife out on the town so she doesn't get lonely while he's away on business. Enter Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) as the gorgeous and somewhat mysterious wife.
What ensues is a platonic date that feels like a nice break from the film's otherwise violent and gritty tone. The restaurant that Mia wants to go to is an Old-Hollywood themed diner called Jack Rabbit Slim's" which is a fictional place in Los Angeles, California. The car used for the scene was a red 1964 Chevelle Malibu which actually belonged to Tarantino at the time of shooting. The use of this car has been speculated as a fun easter-egg and nothing more- but we believe it may also speak to the film's budgetary restrictions. Pulp Fiction was given a budget of $8 Million by Miramax- $5 Million of which was allocated to the film's robust and high-profile cast (Including Christopher Walken, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, and many more). This left a remaining $3 Million dollars for the entirety of the production.
Of that remaining money, a reported $150,000 was spent on this one scene. A scene that Uma Thurman wasn't thrilled about at first. Thurman had previously turned down the role of Mia Wallace before coming around and signing on- but she also was extremely nervous about the scene because of Travolta's impressive dance skills which would be on full display in the twist contest. She also famously hated the song "You Never Can Tell" by Chuck Berry, which Tarantino specifically chose for the dance and was not flexible on. There is so much trivia about this scene and today Kier Gomes get's into all of it. Check out the episode and don't forget to like, comment, and share!

The 2 types of men were Elvis men, and Beatles men NOT Elvis and Sinatra men.
You're right -- the Beatles or Elvis, Sinatra was just a variable
@@juleslund1515 Sinatra didn't even get his name on a milkshake. Dean Martin did. 😂😂😂
You're right. I've seen the deleted scene. You can like them both, but you can't like them both equally. Sooner or later you have to make a choice
I love the Travolta searching meme 😅
This is still Tarantino's best script to this day. I remember watching this movie when it was first out on VHS about 1995 and being blown away.
I still remember when Dad took me to the theater to see Pulp Fiction -- 9 years old, Twizzlers in my mouth and fell in love with Bruce Willis' "blueberry pancakes" girl -- I love you, Dad.
I don't even think we had cup holders in the individual seats back in 1994, did we? when did that happen?
I remember the individualized cup holders in the arm rests came about the same time as the slightly reclining chair position...oh yeah. I felt like a little princess in my heart ♡
did he just say that Django was one of THE best characters Tarentino ever created?
I had just bought a great black leather trenchcoat, so I debuted it to see this film.
What did you think at 9 of the gimp scene when ving rhaymes was getting pounded? Lol did you know what was going on?
The dancing was pretty cool ❤. I wanted to go to that restaurant because of that scene alone 😂
Every time I watch this with someone who's never seen it, they ask me if it's a real place. I always reply I wish it were!
The exterior shot of JRS is at 1435 Flower St. in Glendale. I got a bunch of pics about 10 years ago. Don't know if the building is still there.
Vincent Vega several times having to go to the bathroom to take a s!ht is due to the side effects of heroin, which usually results in chronic constipation.
Yeah they charge 5$ for a shake at McDonald’s now
I know! Milkshakes, really good ones, are almost $20 now. Remember the restaurant Johnny Rockets? They had a little juke box at every table
This is one of my favorite movies of all times
Clicked on this because Pulp Fiction…watching this video on my lunch break and realized I’m wearing the same hat 😂
30 years? Gosh, I was about to turn 18 - it my mind, it really wasn't that long ago 😊
20 years later and still my favorite film and favorite director.
He's up there with the greats but I didn't like several of his movies. Pulp Fiction is his best film still to this day.
Elvis rules, the Beatles too. Love this movie. Best dialogue. 😊
It’s Elvis man or Beatles man… not Sinatra man….
I had a Pulp Fiction T-shirt! I think I got it at Suncoast Motion Picture company, remember that place? I still think the last scene in the Diner is still my favorite scene of the movie. The standoff between the four and Jules deciding to call it quits, which was a good thing for him considering what happened to Vincent...or rather, what WILL happen to him.
Keir that hat is awesome, good choice 👌🏻
Nice happy Gilmore hat
Am I the only person who couldn't sit through the dating scene? I like the dance part though.
Did you watch it standing up then?
yeah..what do you mean? how did you watch it then?
So you like dancing more than sitting?
Still Tarantino's best ❤
100% agree about the best Tarantino characters. I'd place Hans Landa on that list as well.
LOL, I don't buy the next one is going to be his final film. It's like Daniel Day-Lewis and how he kept saying he was retiring, only he wasn't.
I only just noticed because you mentioned her eyes, but Uma doesn't blink in this scene. She lowers her lids when she looks down, but that's the closest she comes to blinking. I think that's where that serpentine look you mentioned comes from.
Their costumes and the look of the dance comes directly from Fellini's "8 1/2", in which there was a dance scene with a couple dressed just like that. Don't think they did the Twist, though I might be wrong about that. Also, the no shoes is because they're on a dance floor. 1950's "sock hops" were high school dances where everyone took their shoes off to dance in order not to damage the gymnasium floors, so it fits in with the theme of the restaurant. (Man, I miss theme restaurants. They were so much fun.)
The Vega film does sound like it would have been fun. Terrible title, though.
This my favorite Tarantino movie, so many iconic scenes in it, and a side note the is the only movie my wife has ever bought me. (We have been together over 20 years) 👍
That dance scene is from Fellini's 8 1/2
at the time that movie seemed like from outer space. in my top5 ever
The most oveeeeeeerated movie of all time
5 dollars is cheap, not expensive for a milkshake🎉😂
Not in 1994, it wasn't. It was kind of outrageous. The place only got away with it because it was a theme restaurant.
Hello 👋 David here I been a movie buff for over fifty years and I thought you did a great job with your video. I see you are a movie poster collector for 25 years I owned Movie Memories poster shop in Palo Alto California. We sold original and reproduction, movie, posters, and also rock posters and photos. Our store is now closed. At the time when Pulp Fiction was in the theaters, the movie poster would always sell out. My question to you is do you know any of the history about the movie posters in the background? Are they originals or reproductions? My favorite is Attack of the 50 foot woman, I have a reproduction framed in my home office. See you at the movies.
handsome
So.. it was expensive because of the cast? I figured it was more about JRS vs the cast.. 30y. Ugh.
I prefer medium rare steak.
Kueer
Dude is gonna get got. Quentin is a solid 0/10.
