Mike the shot you got walking beside the corn head from 9:44 to 10:02 and seeing the corn stalks being pulled down like they were disappearing into the ground was just awesome!!!! I had to watch it multiple times!!
Don't think I've ever seen a twelve row head on a chopper before but it makes sense ,not near as much material going through as with whole plant silage !! When you consider the size of that pile it must take a lot of acres to build that !!! Thanks for the different process video !

We usta do the same basic thing. We’d set up in the corn crib runway with a burr mill and grind up the ear corn and whatever shucks that may be on it and put it in the self feeder for the steers. We ran hogs in with the steers to recoup any whole kernels and the system worked great!

Nice video. But Mike - tell me the difference between "normal" corn silage and ear corn silage. Is it the chopping of only the corncob rather than the whole plant? If it is the thing we call this in german "Lieschkolbensilage". Thanks for your response. Alex
Corn silage is the entire plant of corn shopped up and here they are only getting the ear which would be chopping up pretty much just the cob, grain and husk and a few leaves that would make it through.
A little more commentary would be great. Like how many cows a load will feed. Or how the conveyor on the wagons is powered. If they use the silage blade for snow...
Seams like such a waste of plant material, for higher protein we just add straights to our chop ie. Barley, peas, screenings and minerals. But then again I'm only feeding calving cows not dairy.
I don't get it....was this corn that was intended for picking, yet won't ever dry enough so now they're just chopping the ears as low moisture sileage/high moisture ears?
@@jameskelley8839 Since they are feeding beef , they probably start with corn silage and as they get closer to fishing they increase the amount of earlage. They probably end up with straight earlage.
@@jameskelley8839 It's about nutrient value of feed and percent of protein. A budding future weightlifter would not meet their goal by eating a steady diet of celery (corn stalks). He would require a higher percentage of protein such as maybe chicken (earlage). A lot of beef and dairy farmers are going this route. It also represents a significant saving in labor, equipment, storage, etc. A much bigger bang for the buck. Stalks rarely make the feed value required for wintering beef/dairy, so why waste the time and energy to store it, imo. Hope that helps.

We run a 12 row head with our claas 970 getting the whole stalk and everything.

Those guys are getting it done! I’ve always thought that the blade tractor operator requires a lot of skill. I don’t think its as easy as it looks.

The tractor is probably programed to reverse the fan for a couple minutes every hour to clear the screen.
