About the Haast Pass via Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka:
The ride to Haast Pass via Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka is a cyclist’s and photographer’s dream. Many regard this route as one of the most beautiful roads in New Zealand. It passes long and narrow glacial lakes carved from prehistoric glaciers. In the background, you have the majestic snowcapped mountains. The ride starts in a small town next to Lake Hawea. In this first segment, you ride almost 40 kilometers / 24.85 miles next to the glacier blue lakes. The segment offers many short climbs that are rewarded with stunning views of the lake and the mountains. As you leave the first lake you cross a small piece of land which separates the two lakes. This piece of land is called ‘The Neck’ and takes you to Lake Wanaka. This lake is a favorite among Kiwis and no wonder. With Mount Aspiring National Park in the background, you feel like you are riding your bike in Lord of the Rings. As you leave this segment you ride into a beautiful valley with easy gradients. Surrounded by mountains you ride next to the beautiful Makarora River. You are deep into the wilderness now. As you get to Makarora and its small airstrip the area starts to change from being dry and arid to green and lush. You start to ride in the rainforests cooling shade with a stunning glimpse of the river and the mountains now and again. The gradients start to gets more and more difficult. And once you get to the last kilometer of the ride (Flame Rouge) gradients ramp-up to double digits. As you reach Haast Pass you have ridden more than 66 kilometers / 41 miles and climbed 970 meters / 3182 feet on one of the most spectacular roads in New Zealand.

    Adding music to the ride:
Most cyclists would agree that the ride to Col du Tourmalet is awesome. But when it comes to music opinions are very mixed. This is why we do not add music to our rides. We simply do not want to spoil your ride with music you do not like. But it is quite simple to add it yourself. Open an extra browser tab. Find a site that offers music (Spotify, TH-cam, etc…) and pick the music you like and enjoy the ride...

I was born up here. Brought up on Minaret Sheep Station 1946 - 1952. Middle Earth, raw medieval, tussocks, Marino sheep. You could oniy get in by boat. No roads. Pack Horses met us and we rode the rest of the way, all the way up to the station.

Agree. However, I like to pass through the villages as well. Great fun.
