  • As requested by viewers! Here I compare the brewing result between the Kalita Wave and the Fellow Stagg Pour-Over Dripper. It's a subtle difference but in the end a distinct one.

    Normally here I would share links for where you can buy these products. However that has always been Amazon, and I'm looking for a good alternative, because I think they are a cancer on this world. You can of course just search the products yourself. I'll be finding a good partner solution for where to buy these in the near future.

    Interesting video, thanks. I personally tend to think that, body and mouthfeel aside (more or less oils, etc.), virtually all manual brewers could bring out the same flavours and complexity of the coffee into the cup, provided that they are dialed in optimally in their own way. I may be wrong, of course. So, whereas I always appreciate those kinds of new brewer introductions, I feel somewhat irrelevant to conclude that one is more like this or like that, because when brewed side by side with the exact same method/recipe, etc. they don't taste equal.
    By the way, I'd love to hear your thoughts, in a future taste comparison video, about brewers having a large and/or thick surface paper or cloth filtration (e.g .cones, Chemex) vs. those having none or almost none (e. g. AeroPress, Siphon pot, French Press, Cowboy coffee), regarding the extra flavours those materials bring into the cup. For in my experience they inevitably add undesirable flavours to the beverage, no matter how thoroughly you rinse (paper ones) or cleanse (fabric ones) them; and the larger the quantity of coffee staying in contact with them during the brew is, and the longer time it is, the more unpleasant extra flavours end up in the cup.

      That last one would be pretty difficult to discern, just because the end result of the coffee brewing is so different by the different natures of the filters and the brewing chambers. Not sure I could discern if there's relatively more paper taste being imparted because the filter is thicker. But I could do a brew comparison something like V60 vs Chemex. Could do FP v Chemex just for the dynamic difference, but that wouldn't tell us much about the filters.

    I love the Kalita Wave! I just brewed up 25g in my glass 185 dripper (I also have the metal and ceramic) of a Zambia Kasama- and, the fermented fruit flavors shine through! I like the light weight plastic assembly of the glass model, as I can gently agitate the grounds while brewing atop the range server. I guess my concern with the Stagg would be retention and possible channeling in the "column" that is formed by the filter. Did you experience any such problems? Awesome video!!

      Yea I don't try too much with the Stagg because I just prefer the kalita. Only place I've used the stagg is as an occasional "travel" drip brewer (since it packs so well compactly, minus the filters but they are pretty easy to fit in). As far as the Wave, gonna do rinsed vs not rinsed on the filter soon as an update to my standard wave approach video

    Another good comparison would be Blue Bottle Brewer and Kalita. BB is more similar to Kalita than Stagg. The 185 filter fits perfectly in the BB Brewer. I have the BB Brewer, but would love to hear your thoughts on that vs Kalita, if possible.

      Yea the kalita seems popular to replicate. in most cases the differences come down to the holes in the bottom. i'll make a video when i get my hands on one

    can you do kalita glass vs kalita ceramic? purchased glass version first and was getting clogging issues towards end of the drain. just got ceramic version and getting better brew times and no clogging issues...trying to figure out if its design or user error. thanks!!

    Hey! Great video! I have the same grinder that you have. What number do you use for dialing the kalita wave?

    • @Coffeeloversmag
      @Coffeeloversmag  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      been typically around 46/47 - but going down to 44 and up to 50 sometimes

      Was about to ask the same question about the grinder. Just got that grinder and used about one pound of cheap coffee beans to adjust the grind time for all amounts of cups. Ended up on 50 for v60. If I go lower than 48, it takes over 3 minutes to brew on v60.

    Did you use the same grind size? Could the missing flavors from the Fellow be due to grind size?

    • @Coffeeloversmag
      @Coffeeloversmag  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was all done equivalent ... but it should be noted that the fellow might require a different grind size, so it's hard to accurately compare.

      @@Coffeeloversmag I think the Fellow drains faster than the kalita. Therefore, a finer grind in the Stagg may make the end coffee more extracted. Any updates?

    Could it be the larger amount of coffee used in the Kalita account for the extra flavor compared to the Stagg, with the smaller amount of coffee?

    • @Coffeeloversmag
      @Coffeeloversmag  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would make sense. pretty sure I used the same amount in both to eliminate that as a variable though.

    Can kalita filter paper be used in stagg dripper?

    • @Coffeeloversmag
      @Coffeeloversmag  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No they don't fit in there. The stagg filters are more vertical column shaped, and the kalita's more cone like

    • @ctfddftba
      @ctfddftba 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The flat bottom is the correct diameter, but the issue is the height. The 185 filters may fit the Stagg X but they don’t in the Stagg XF

    Use of the word “smooth” as a descriptor = bad source of information.
