    When a friend taught my how to ride a bike (was around 16 and already knew how to drive a car) I told him after that I felt afraid of everything, bumps, traffic, etc. and he replied “Good! The problem with bikes is when you start losing that fear!”

    here are a few more:
    the temperature feels like 10C less on a bike then on foot, dress according to that. if it's sunny and 25C, you need leathers like it's mid october.
    knuckle protectors are not for looking tough. once you get hit by a flipped up stone between your knuckes or your pinky, you'll wear them religiously.
    Even quality biker gear doesn't last, gloves and helmet lining will flake from sweat and scrathing from hair in a few years. budget accordingly.
    bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs,especually during sunset
    if you lock your helmet to the wheel of your bike, dogs will pee into it (seen it myself)
    there will be a crucible moment when you won't be ready yet but the bike you're riding will...start under 600cc at least a year, zero shame in that, bikers totally respect those who don't need a beast to enjoy a good ride
    an average car can travel much easier at higher speeds than a motorcycle. you can't cruise any real distance at 130-40kph, it's loud and shakey and you need to concentrate too much. even on shorter trips you'll meet plenty cars coming up from behind traveling faster then you.
    there are always prick drivers who will try to goad you to race you (loosers in used audis and bmws around here) , they are really dangerous and always let them past
    the trick of the "garage turn" on the exam is you have to look at the point you're circling around, not forward. your reflex from bycicling will do the rest, you make it worse by trying to turn consciously (wish someone told me that at riding school)
    never ride because you have to
    always vary your routes, never fall into a routine like counting on knowing the order of the traffic lights (one day they changed the order on a major intersection at my town and a bus driver plowed into a whole crowd the next day)
    that's all for now...

    • @eagle25311
      @eagle25311 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A couple I noticed easy remedies for. The helmet can hang the other direction where the hole is facing down so they can't pee into it. And I commute 80 miles a day to work on my CBR1000RR I use bose noise cancelling headphones so its not loud. And liter bikes are designed to ride smooth at high speeds so its not shaky, especially with my stabilizer. And I ride 10-15 mph faster than traffic on the highway because I don't like cars coming up behind me too often. Cars here average 85-90 mph so that means i usually commute at 90-100 mph.

    Bikes are dangerous. Bikes are hard work. Bikes make ten times the demands cars do. Riding well takes practice. Long-term biking requires luck to keep out of serious trouble.
    And you know what? There just isn't anything more fun or rewarding. SO RIDE. Don't do it after drinking. Wear appropriate clothing (especially a helmet). Assume none of the cars near you is aware of your existence -- ALWAYS keep thinking about what some moron in your vicinity might do (like an unexpected left turn) that can get you hurt. Keep an eye on the weather. Be sure your bike is well-maintained. Be aware of your skill limitations. And every time you ride, think about ways you can do it better and more safely.
    But, do all that stuff, and RIDE. Life is unpredictable and we're all going to die someday. The trick is not doing it prematurely or unnecessarily.
    After 40 years and many, many thousands of miles of surprisingly crisis-free riding on Hondas, Harleys, Yamahas, Kawasakis, and few other brands no one even remembers now, I had to hang up my helmet because of eyesight and reflex diminishment. And now every...single... time I see a bike on the road, I cry a little inside. So, if you have any interest in climbing on a bike, DO IT. Just do it with your brain engaged and your fingers crossed :)

      ericynot agree. I’ve had an issue with nerves in my neck for a year. I can’t ride more than 5 mins with out my left arm getting numb and I can’t twist my neck to see behind me so I have not ridden much lately. It’s not safe atm.

      wow, that story made me feel good.
      I'm 16 and picking up riding a moped because I'll use it for work (delivery man) but I'll probably buy one so I could go to school, I've ridden a moped twice, in the past 2 lessons, I have 5 left and then the test, just today I nearly died because when I looked at the mirrors there were no cars and when I was about to switch lanes a car just flew near me and I almost shit myself, now at least I know of dead zones that you just can't see through the mirrors.
      hopefully I learn from small mistakes and not make any terrifying mistakes that would leave me dead or without a limb or two :)

    • @Paiadakine
      @Paiadakine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ryder Wilson yes you need to turn your head and look to see if the coast is clear. Mirrors are not enough. You need to scan all around you to see what is going on. Pretty soon you can tell what other drivers will do. It’s a sixth sense that you develop. You can not rely on other drivers following the rules of the road. You need to keep your head on a swivel and if you are unsure what the other driver will do, hold back a bit to give you an escape route if the driver does the wrong thing.
      My first vehicle was a motor at 16 years old.
      Keep your situational awareness such that your are not surprised by someone over taking you or cutting in front of you.

    • @Reeds_World
      @Reeds_World 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Thomas Schmidt The best helmet money can buy as far as noise canceling is a schuberth. The helmets are about $1000 and they only cancel wind noise to about 82 decibels at 65mph. Anything over 85 decibels can create permanent hearing damage. Sooo with that being said even if you have the best helmet money can buy if you go 70mph or higher, which you will do on US highways and you do not wear ear plugs you are causing permanent hearing damage. JUST FROM WIND NOISE!

But with that being said if you cruise on the highway above that you should consider some ear plugs.

    I learned early when I started riding... to be in control of your bike is to be one with it! It’s like balancing when you walk! Always rev match to stay in the correct gear for better control, let the engine match your speed while braking for better control so if you need to get out of the way you can! I see a lot of rider grab the the clutch and free wheel while approaching traffic at a stop light, down shit and let that baby sound off and still have control. I’ve been riding for 20 plus years and since given up the 180 plus mph life style, but I still ride comfortable and agile... stay up and be safe out there.

    Two of the most important things about riding a motorcycle were left out totally. Number 1, and the most important of all things a rider should know...when you head out on that motorcycle, YOU ARE TOTALLY INVISIBLE!!! Ride as though no one else on the road sees you, you may survive without incident. Number 2, you will go where you look. You look off to the left to see some something, you will drift to the left. Look where you want your bike to go. By these two simple rules, I have ridden a motorcycle since I was 13 and I will be 70 this year. I have hit the ground one time in all that time and it was due to a deer running into me and even it was a minor incident because I just ended up leaning on an embankment. Cost me a headlight, windshield, and kickstand and I went to work that same night. I have had numerous close calls, but because I knew I was invisible, I was able to avoid any impact.

    This ‘8’ things list needs some additional points!
    1. It’s uncomfortable. It doesn’t get easier, you get better at it.
    2. It’s never perfect outside. It may be for 5 minutes, then it will be hot/cold/full of bugs/rainy, etc.
    3. If you don’t have a friend with a bike, this is not a great hobby by yourself. Still doable, but with friends, it’s 100 million times better.
    4. It’s significantly more dangerous than riding in car. But life is short, so there’s that.
    5. If you have a young family, taking off on a bike is not gonna feel right on a Saturday morning.
    6. Don’t bar hop on a bike. You need super skills to ride. Nobody see you, so ride like it.
    7. If you live in the Midwest, the riding season is very short. No matter what they say about global warming, it’s arctic like 9 months per year.
    8. If you buy a >$20K bike, making that payment every month is gonna hurt. Then in January you’re gonna be like “do I really need this”. Of course you do, until your car needs wheel bearings or some other maintenance. Bottom line, you need disposable income for a bike. Or buy a cheap bike and spend your days wishing for a better bike when your bike needs maintenance or repairs.

They can move. Avoid them at all costs! I’m 44 now, I have laid down my bikes plenty of times. 75% were my fault. Got my first gixer at 16. Riding wheelies at 90 mph is a great rush, but can lead to injury! Got a Harley to slow down? 75 mph is the same on any bike or car. I live in Jacksonville Florida no helmet laws. Please wear a helmet!

    Ninja 250 s and stuff are really good bikes for even advanced riders to stay proficient and get more proficient at dragging your knee and stuff like that actually taking it out on a track in gaining more confidence. and they're cheap enough that you can just have it as a designated track bike and you can also repair them cheaply and learn how to repair them all on your own especially if you get a slightly older non-computerized and carbureted bike

    For 20 to 25 years old I rode a bike 6 months and drove a car 6 months. The motorcycle insurance is a lot less, unless you are young and get a race replica. Motorcycle tires are expensive- the Michelin Commander II lasts a whole lot longer than a cheaper Shinko and is a better deal in the long run. A Chinese battery usually lasts a year and a half, and a Yuasa Japanese battery might last twice as long. I did have one Walmart motorcycle battery last 7 years- the next 2 only lasted 1.5 years so I switched to Yuasa batteries. To me, motorcycles are about 25 times more dangerous, and 100 times more fun. I only ride on weekends, above 50 degrees and dry on curvy country roads I know well with few cars, usually only 30 to 50 miles at a time, just enough to feed my riding addiction.

    Just thought I would mention, it is not just my butt that hurts after a while. My gas hand goes numb, my clutch hand starts to ache when I pull in the clutch (city riding), and sport bikes will make your wrists, knees, ankles, and neck hurt. Cruisers like many Harleys will also make your shoulders hurt, and the vibration gets to your hands as well.

One occasion just fat bobs glasses for my eyes. Excellent video. Please keep it up informing new riders. Getting good riding gear is of the utmost importance. It need to be comfortable and fit properly. Don't let your ego and your buddies goad you into something you aren't ready for. Get a small to midsize bike and learn to ride and then see what you really want to own. Not every bike is suitable for every type of riding. Find what you want to do and then make a decision on what you really want for a bike. After decades of riding all kinds of bikes I went back to a 650. Last thing from my Army days is I have is to your head on a swivel. Sean said it very well. You have only the protection from the gear you are wearing. Ride defensively and have fun.

    New riders also don't know anything about counter-steering. Take a rider course, learn counter-steering and practice it. Without that knowledge, you cannot swerve a motorcycle and you cannot regain control if you are headed off the road, and you are also prone to panic if you take a curve too fast.
