There are certain times that certain ceremonies can be performed. That is why traditionally the need to know the moon cycles was so important.
Today our Navajo people have adopted the 12 month calendar.
In this video Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, teaches about the moon cycles. Of course the moon cycles don't match up exactly with the months but they are close.
    Enjoy the video.

This needs to be more celebrated in a physical calender. I know I would buy one! 13 moon cycles in a year just makes more sense. 28 times 13 = 364 + one day for celebration/worship/reflexion. Think of it like this, we could still keep the 7 day week and Sunday is always the 1st, 8th. 15th. and 22nd. On the Spring or Fall Equinox (you tell me) would be New Years Day! Literally no Sun-Sat for one day. NYD Just makes more natural sense to me based on what I've learned. For the record I choose the Spring Equinox for New Years Day!

We don't even need a 7-day week necessarily if another number, more informed by newer information from our God/Spirit/Creator/community etc. suggests it's time for another, since the week length isn't ancillary to an actual (meta)physical cosmic process of the year. 7 does fit so nice into 28 and it's a highly regarded spiritual number, though.

My point is: it's a bit far fetched in my eyes to say "as the creator intended...".
We have sun and moon and both grant us to use their appearance to organize our year. Both usages make sense in their own way.
Personally I like the way with the moon cycles. But there probably was a reason why it gradually changed from moon to sun cycles in parts of the world. It must have made sense somehow.

Thank you for your teachings 🙏Interestingly, lunar calenders were used all over the world in old times. The ancient cultures of Europe used lunar calenders as well. Here too, the New Year was considered to start either October/November or March/April, depending on the nation's culture.
Also, names were chosen for practical reasons or according to nature's events.
It seems quite logical to organize life around the lunar cycles, so it happened all over the world and connects humankind.
Just imagine our ancient ones looking up to the moon, in order to organize their year's path - no matter what continent you come from now - it was the same moon (and it is the same moon now). 🌛

So much more intuitive. I’ve always felt the energy of these cycles and found it hard when I lived in situations where the winter was most active. I lived in a Colorado ski mountain town and worked in restaurants and catering. Most people live there to ski all winter. They couldn’t understand how I would prefer to hang out with a book or my journal instead. I had to recharge on my off time in a more quiet setting as I worked long hours in busy places. I also lived in NM and AZ for many years. The four corners area feels like ‘home.’ TY for sharing this wisdom. It was similarly practiced by other cultures, including the ancient Celts and other European practices before the big trees were all cut down, and their nature-based practices were shunned.

This is a very good video I believe there is supposed to be 13 months in our calendar. I also believe April 1st is the start of the new calendar I believe that's also why April 1st is considered April Fool's Day. They call us fools because we believe what they say.
    Peace, Love and Freedom 🇺🇲

Thank you Grandfather, I love to hear your wisdom. My best friend is a Blackfoot whose father was kidnapped as a child and sent off to a Christian school where they made him change his name. My friend lost his entire heritage thanks to those people. Listening to you reminds me of him. May peace & harmony be with you forever~🪶🤩✌

The Celtic lunar calendar was divided into 13 months, with each month named after a tree or plant. The cycles of the moon were used to determine the best times for planting and harvesting crops. Hindu calendar maintains the integrity of the lunar month, but inserts an extra full month..

That is important to know the knowledge of how to take away from the plain with harvesting and gardening, but also too, how do we give back, everything seems to go against us we live in apartments and seem to waste a whole lot of food and natural resources based upon being raised to care only for the superficial things in life and society fails us on a lot of different things.
