    Great friendly video with a nice way of sharing your knowledge.
    Great to see deltas being used. I Just picked up the delta 16 with fin and looking forward to starting our season in DK.

      The 16 is a great boat - check out my most recent videos to see me paddling an older one - I also have a seventeen, I used it on the IP in 2011. Been paddling it since 2009. Just an awesome boat.

    Excellent video and one I wished I wanted before this morning 😆
    Like your student I'm new to sea kayaks iv had a sot for a few years .
    This morning I had the opportunity to go for a paddle "solo" I wanted to practice my forward stroke using my legs aswell as torco rotation like in so many videos .I paddled roughly 5km agenst a 14-mid 20 knot gusting breeze and practiced my stroke as best I could any way on the return home I taught I'd have an advantage going with such a strong breeze .. well was I ever wrong I had a good go but eventually had to drop my rudder and I found my self using more shoulders and torco rotation and as my legs were occupied with the foot pegs.. if I pushed for power the rudder would wag like dogs tail😅
    So I guess the moral of the story is like u said " take your time " and focus on keeping the boat straight!! My boat is a wilderness systems tsunami16 it's my first and so far I love it!!

      Glad you enjoyed the video. You can still push when doing the forward stroke, but have to push a little bit with the “other” foot. I like the Tsunami 160, great boat.

    You know it's windy when you untie your kayak that's on the roof, then 2 seconds later it's on the ground with out you touching it. That was my first time, now I find a wind block to unload.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I have definitely been there too. A 17 foot kayak is just really a big sail.

    The water can be moving in a different direction to the wind as well. Probably too advanced for me at the moment should appreciate a video on it someday.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh absolutely! And when you have current in one direction and wind in the opposite direction it makes the waves stand up, and get closer together. Real pain to paddle in.

    May I ask for insight into how long it takes to become an instructor, and if it’s a sustainable career? :)

      This is a great question, that would be too long to answer here. But a video is coming shortly! Thanks!

    I always deploy rudder when deep enough, curious why you would want it up in some circumstances?

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a great question, that I will probably work into a video. But the answer is that there are a couple of reasons. For the most part, I don’t use the rudder unless I need to, because I want to do as much as I can with just the paddle. It forces me to be a better paddler, instead of relying on the rudder. I work hard to always be working hard. To keep my skills sharp, and knowledge flowing. It is the same reason I practice wet exits and self rescue, or any of the other things I do to be the best paddler I can be. However, when I am doing a long paddle day with a loaded boat, I may put the rudder down so I can just focus on moving the boat forward and let the rudder do the turning. But for 90% of my paddling the rudder is up.

    • @douggarson50
      @douggarson50 ปีที่แล้ว

      I normally paddle with my rudder up and only deploy it when needed. My reason is if I become reliant on the rudder all the time and a cable breaks you're in trouble if you don't have the skills to control your boat with just your paddle.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. That said, I have never seen - in 20+ years - a rudder cable break. But yes. I want to have the skills to not use the rudder. And you get bonus points for responding to a 2 year old comment.

      @@AdventureOtaku In my 15 to 20 years of paddling I've only seen it once and luckily we were close to shore and returned to the beach to repair it. Had we been mid crossing (in challenging conditions) it could have been very serious. As a bonus the conditions improved in the 1/2 hour it took to repair the cable and I found my knife which I had left behind on a log on the beach. Win win!

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a rudder cable detach from a foot peg - which we fixed on an island - while paddling the inside passage. The conditions couldn’t have been better…. On the same trip I left a pair of Pogies on log as we were departing a beach… so win/lose…. Oh well.

    Your ‘Contact Tow’ (short tow line) you wrapped around your deck lines, did you make or purchase? I’ve seen other paddlers do same thing. I’d not seen this before.

    How do you like the seat back height on the Riot Kayaks they can be pretty low.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not sure I have ever paddled a Riot… I don’t think? Unless you mean Boreal which is the same company? If you mean boreal it’s been a while but they are great boats with a high performance seat back…ie, a low one.

    Why does it never blow like that in the summer when the water would be warm?

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does but usually associated with a storm, and then you have to deal with lightning. so, not a great option.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He was doing a number of things that I didn't like, he is also compressing his stroke, meaning he isn't planting far enough out. I think it was nerves as he had never paddled in conditions like that. He is pushing (as opposed to pulling) which is good. We were only out for about 1.5 hours. He is still relatively novice but coming along quickly.
