    On our way to shoot our NAB 2013 coverage this year, we decided to shoot, edit and upload an entire episode of DVTV right out of one small camera bag. The Tamrac Zuma 32 bag has an amazing amount of space for your iPad or Macbook Air along with a small mirrorless camera. We used the Sony NEX-7 to shoot with and the iPad 3 to edit. While there were some compromises we had to make, such as no color grading and no lower thirds overlays, the episode turned out pretty well. Take a look at all the gear we used below.

    This is why I love living in vegas, once I'm out of school tomorrow... NAB the rest of the day!

    They are two very different cameras. The NEX 7 is a stills camera first (and a very good one at that). Plus the file sizes with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera will make you burn through memory cards very quick.

    We shot our NAB coverage on our FS700 with the Rode Reporter mic and edited it on Premiere with our laptops. This was just a test to see how much we could do with just an iPad and NEX 7 and Rode Videomic Pro.

    1. I use 16GB San Disk Class 10 cards. We only needed one for this video.
    2. Pinnacle Studio
    3. Camera connection kit for the iPad
    Links added to the description of the video. Thanks!

    Yeah! I'm really digging the small package they got everything into! I just wish my NEX-5n had an audio input.

    We have one and use it for interviews with the NEX 7, but it's very difficult to manually sync audio to video on the iPad. Not impossible...but difficult.

    Nice setup - got a few things to ask though (hope you don't mind):
    1 - how many (and what size) memory cards do you normally have with you?
    2 - what was the editing software? I think I heard you mention it but maybe I'm going a bit deaf :)
    3 - what's the little adapter you used to connect the usb mic to the ipad?

    if it's anything like the nex 5 you're asking a lot to film for more than 30-45 min consecutively. They're not really designed for that in my opinion

    I've seen a lot of people angry about the video on the NEX 7 but there are alot of cameras that overheat and have time limits. When I committed to the NEX system for stills AND video work I bought the NEX 5 and a NEX VG 20. Work great together but useless on their own. Solution: buy the right equipment for the job needed.

    That new $999 BlackMagic with its zillion stop range just makes me hate my Sony Nex7 with its 10 minute clip limit that much more.

    With Pinnacle Studio, were you able to copy from SD onto your iPad?
    For multiple cards I can only imagine 2 workflows.
    Copy each card on to the iPad, provided you have a big enough iPad.
    Or
    Copy each card onto the iPad and then back onto a single High capacity SD Card and edit off of that if the iPad doesn't have the space.
    Are either of the above possible?
    Thanks!

    Great video! How are you dealing with the Nex7 overheating issue when shooting video? I'm regretting buying mine big time!

  • @visualmedia4us
    @visualmedia4us 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I lost 2 cams (Minolta dsc, Sony dsc) and 2 laptops (HP, Dell) over the years on overheating in the tropics where temperatures are routinely over 34 degrees Celsius. For now, I'm sticking with over-dimensioned gear like an Asus laptop.

  • @visualmedia4us
    @visualmedia4us 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Probably not. I had to buy a small adapter to stick my Rode on top of my SONY CX740. The critical part is in plastic but the Rode is light. I wouldn't trust a heavy Zoom H4n or video light on it since it might break off. I really hate these proprietary hotshoes on SONY and if it wasn't for the superb optical stabilization on the CX740 series, I would have bought a Canon instead.

  •  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey! You talk about the 10 minute clip limit. I read that the Nex-7 overheats after 10 minutes of video shooting and you need to wait until the camera cools down. Is that the limit you are talking about? Is the overheating issue true?
    Thanks!

    What video codec or format does the iPad accept? I tried importing MTS files from a DSLR and it wouldn't take them.
