Ive spent the last year training with my mentor for my own bees to arrive. Our first colony delivered to our property almost 3 months ago now. I found that my colony grew so quickly that i have had to install a second brood box already with more frames for them to work as they ran out of room to lay eggs, building comb on the interior lid and under the frames. My mentor had been injured and was in hospital when i discovered 5 queen cells about 2.5 weeks ago and his advice seeing as though i could see lava was to kill the queen cells. Felt like such a sad thing to do but he advised that if I didn’t do it they would swarm once the queen cells emerged and i would lose my colony. We are located in Australia and chose to use the flowhive 2 as our colony for ease of harvest of the honey this season. We also have Australian stingless native bees coming in December which is exciting and frightening at the same time. I am very interested to watch more of your bee videos. I hate how big the fingers are on the gloves as well, they feel like they are made for a giant not for dainty women’s hands. Im thinking about getting a pair of the leather gardening gloves in the smallest size possible and using my thumb elastic to keep the arms of my suit down over the ends of the gloves so that the bees can’t go up inside my suit, but will give me the movement and fit that i want to deal with the frames. I find that these giant fingers get caught underneath the frames as Im trying to put the frames back in which then causes anxiety which Im sure the bees pick up on. Ive just watched your video installing the cattle panel which i found really informative. Im looking forward to binging some of videos. Have a great weekend Cheers Theresa - Australia
My husband and I are first time beekeepers this year in Michigan too!! Your hive looks great. There’s so many unknowns, you’re doing great!
Thank you!! It’s so cool hearing from another beekeeper in Michigan! We’re in this together 🤠
