I have a strong feeling that you're not just a lure painter I also think that you're an airbrush artist too, because of your attention to colours and where they can be used! I'm finding these paint reviews/tests really interesting. I was going to ask what happens if you paint in layers of colour shifts but you answered that in your video. I find the colour shifting paints more and more exciting every time I see you use them. I find them a more natural colour for fish scales, fins and tails! I've yet again learnt so much, a BIG THUMBS UP. Thank you and take care my friend 👍😷👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

That is indeed correct! In my spare time I like to airbrush regularly on canvas and such as well. In the beginning it was meant to just get better at airbrushing so I could apply this to my lurepainting. But I started to like it so much a became another hobby 👍😄 take care my friend! Thank you for the compliment! 🙏😊

@@lureblanks Airbrushing on canvas! Isn't that really difficult due to the textured surface of the canvas? I also would like to give airbrush painting a try. Thank you for taking the time to reply as I know that you must already be busy! Take care my friend until next time👍😷👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Old man now you've done it you've touched on a subject that I consider myself an expert in no brag just fact. I guess nowadays these companies are making paints that they call color-shifting. 25 to 30 years ago we were doing what you're calling color-shifting we called it flip-flopping. There's powders that you can buy they are added to any clear coat or paint and flip flop it or color shifted to any other color. I cant remember where I bought them I bought a 1/8 of a pound of each color and have lasted over 20 years. Your basically working with all the colors that you have and can flip flop them to any other color. The most important thing is that these can be added to your clear coats and powders never go bad paint does . When you start to flip flop & add glitter now your talking. Color shifting paints in my opinion are a major waste of time and money . GREAT VIDEO .....

For beginner painters or painters that are looking to speed up the painting process then these are what a person wants. Not every painter understands colour theory. Or special layering techniques that are practiced and utilized by alot of automotive painters. To achieve colour shift or flip flopping. To some painters these may be a waste of money but to the majority they could really step up thier air brushing and or painting with colours such as these and the other colours sold by these companys.

I totally get what you mean. But ofcourse like Chris said for the beginners that never heard of flipflopping and mixing powders in clear coats this is a cheap and fast/easy solution. But it's the same thing ofcourse with making your own thinners, airbrush cleaner and other stuff. It is what you prefer yourself and what you believe in or like to work with. Thanks for the comment! it does add more value and information to this subject for everyone to read! 👊

@@lureblanks This for me was a great subject.. I believe one of the best so far. Look at how much airbrushing there is NOW in the custom bike ,auto & fishing business. Everything is relative... my belief was go out learn that product than apply it. Chris said "not every painter understands color theory".. my thought is " How can you become a artist without understanding it"? Vallejo is a good product a lot of people are using it more. It is all progress 20 years ago never thought we'd be powder coating jigs hey? There are so many different techniques that can be applied to lures. I'm going too try to get on face book with you love too send you some pictures ,,,,keep your videos coming man we all can learn from each other .

Gunna order them here , hoping I’ll like them on the lures I’m making .

Yes sir, I tried all the shifters from Vallejo. I even started selling them separately (per bottle) because some of them are amazing for lure painting. Never tried turbo dorks paints, but heard a lot of good things about them! Would be cool to try some 😄!

Hi-loving everything I’m discovering on your channel. Thanks for the content. I watched as you said you applied matte vs glossy for a base. My question is about which paint to use. On the Facebook airbrushing groups, guys discuss about using rattle cans (like Rustoleum) for a base, saying it is cheaper and more efficient. I was wondering what you think about using spray cans for a base? Do you think it will impact the Vallejo paints used later? Or would it might effect a clear coat at the end? Any thoughts about (or videos you may have already made) on this subject would be helpful. Thanks again for your videos-very informative and straight forward.

Thank you Aaron for the compliment and nice to hear you enjoy the content! Base coats from rattle cans can layer a high quality base coat ( meaning the paint of is good quality and it adheres very well) The most important thing a base coat can do and the very reason we layer a base coat is so that the other paints adhere well and stay on that lure. Preventing chipping and prolonging the lifespan of your lure. Most rattle can paints once dry will not interfere anymore with other paints and you can just paint over them without any issues. The thing in my opinion is that with rattle cans you lose more paint per lure ( spraying besides the lure, paint just flying in the air) because they have a wider spray angle, you can solve this by turning that little nozzle 90 degrees to spray horizontal. And also spray cans are bad for the environment in general ( canned pressure created in factories have a big impact on the environment and empty rattle cans should be sorted separately in the waste bin ( and there are good reasons for that), something the majority of people don´t do) . Using an airbrush is more sustainable and can just as well layer a decent base coat. That just depends on the paint you use. With a spray can you can save time, because it is just grab and go, no cleaning of an airbrush or changing paint necessary.
But of course it is personal and there is nothing wrong with using spray cans, I use them to base coat for hot stamping th-cam.com/video/xtKYqpt-EnI/w-d-xo.html
So in short, I agree with the fact that it is easier, saves time and could potentially be cheaper :D But it does not necessarily layer a better base coat. And most paints can be used over the base coat once dry 👍😊

@@lureblanks thanks you for taking the time for your in-depth response. Environmental issues a concern for me as well. I only make a few baits for myself and do not need I spray dozens at a time, so I will continue to use white/black Vallejo for my base (I hope that is a good choice for base coating). By the way, I love your video on 3D scaling. I’m about to give your technique a try!

@@aaronbyers1391 You are welcome and glad to hear you think about the environment as well! The vallejo paints absolutely can be used as a good base. For most types of fishing these will withstand enough ( depending on the finishing coat as well ofcourse) let me know if you have any further questions, happy to help!

The problem with colour shift paints is that once you top coat the lure with epoxy the effect is almost completely lost because it affects how the light bounces off, not worth the effort in my opinion.

    • @lureblanks

Are you using the same vallejo colorshift paints? Because all the spoons at the end of the video are clear coated and they still shift color , some even better after clear coating.

For those thinking of buying these, I feel they are poor value. They can only be bought as sets and you end up with 4 color shifts that are very poor, 1 that is ok, and 1 that is quite good. The other issue as highlighted is they are useless on anything other than dark base coats. The final problem is you use a lot of it per lure to get the effect, as stated no thinner needed because these are already very thin.
