I really loved that version of Raglen Road/Dawning of the day with Van Morrison. I find it hard to learn tunes by just watching someone play it slowly but after listening to the full somg a few times it sinks in way easier.
So I'll do the same here. Avoid even attempting this without listening to it in a song a few times. Thanks for these they're really helpful!

Much better with tabs! Keep adding them in, they help me so much!

Thanks for the lesson Sean. Wikipedia has this on Jimmy Ward, hope its helpful :)
'Jimmy Ward (1909 in Tullagha, Kilfenora - 1987 in Milltown Malbay) was a well known Irish traditional banjo player and lilter out of Milltown Malbay, County Clare, Ireland.
Ward originally played the flute, piccolo and the whistle, but changed to the banjo in the 1940s.[1]
Ward was one of the founders of the renewed Kilfenora Céilí Band in 1927. He was still a part of the band when they won three consecutive All Ireland championships at the Fleadh Cheoil.[1]
He is the namesake of Jimmy Ward's Jig.[2]
In 1974, Ward decided to leave the Kilfenora Céilí Band. He started a new band named Bannermen with PJ Murrihy and Michael Sexton[3]
Later in life, Ward moved to Milltown Malbay, where he opened a small shop.[1] In the early seventies he had a severe car crash in Inagh.[1][4]
    Ward died in 1987,

Out of curiosity, why is it uncommon for tin whistle players to use sheet music and mostly learn by ear. I haven't seen this as much with the bag pipe. I find tabs are not that helpful given there is no timing information.

That's a good question. I'm not the best musician. Believe it or not it's actually not that tough to play. And plays well with the tabs playing by ear is common.

The short answer is "that's how it's always been done." Its just a part of the tradition and tunes weren't really written down as a matter of course. Francis O'Neill is thought to have assembled the first significant collection of Irish tunes in sheet music form, but other than that it was pretty uncommon for a long time. And as you've already found, tabs don't help much from a rhythm standpoint - and neither does sheet music, if we're honest. There's a lot to Irish traditional tunes that's found in the spaces between the dots on the page.

@@whistletutor Good point I think that you're right.Ive found that if I listen to a song and then play it (with my sheet music with whistle tabs fulls of Irish tunes. )It's a lot easier to play then.I can't read music just the tabs. I close my eyes and listen. When we eliminate one or more of our senses it forces the rest to work harder.I appreciate your tips and brief history lesson.

This is curious, I’ve been learning for a few months now and have been memorising Jim Wards from another source. Are tunes regional with variations depending upon who has taught it?

    • @whistletutor

Definitely - that's why you'll find loads of settings on a site like thesession.org, particularly for a tune like this that's really common.

You will also find that the same tune can have a number of different names.

Ok, after I've heard the song at the original speed, I'll probably leave it with learning the tin whistle. I'll never get that speed. Maybe I'm too old for that. I should rather choose an instrument that is played more slowly. It's a good thing that there are such TH-cam channels where you can quickly find out that an instrument doesn't suit you.
    Maybe then a triangle? 🤔

I found the triangle hard to play… no body could give tabs for which side to hit 🤷‍♂️
