Absolutely fascinating hearing Alex talk about Jack doing Batman
Usually, I feel about 20-30% of an artist professional work goes unseen. Great idea on a book!
I would go and say 50%-70% go unseen. An artist curate so much of his work, all the sketches and unpolished ideas never get out of the room usually.
@@MrSamane22Definitely 70%, comic book artists have around 5 sketches for a single page. Let alone for the cover art
I love Alex's creativity and unbridled love for the comic medium and its history.
I like that his reimagining of a kirby batman looks like the batman brave and the cold cartoon batman
And i love how kirby is, has and have an influence on most of the greatests comic book artists
He does look a bit Richard Sprang esque.

A true artist taking more time talking about another artist than himself, on a presentation supposed to promote his own art. Thats the sign of a true artist
Always been a fan of his realistic art style. I’d always hoped the live action movies would take inspiration from Ross’ work when they were looking for the right actor and designing costumes

That thumbnail looks like a real costumed person not a art piece.
It happened twice: First Suicide Squad movie, featured a Harley/Joker dance with a tuxedo, precisely from a Ross work. Another one: The Batman, some of the Penguin's facials and gestures were extracted from Batman: War at crime, a Dini/Ross colaboration.
Love your grand vision, your take on everything, Superman, FF, Golden Age, Silver Age, Your respect for the history and storytelling. Artists, writers, producers, creators should really learn from you. Thank you!

Super Kool. Born in the mid 1960s I was into comics by the early 1970s. Brings me back to that time. Alex's work is amazing in its own right and I love that he pays homage to another great from our childhood. So glad to see him share this work and his thoughts. As someone who grew up with a knack and love for drawing, painting and art in general I admire his dedication to the craft and all the hard years he's put in. ☮️
The whole concept of Kirby: Genesis was also releasing unseen characters and concepts like Tiger 21, The Midnight Swan, the Sundance Gang, The Pioneer Two, Dragonsbane, Thunderfoot, Phantom Continent, and more.
With the unseen art you had my interest but with the "what if Kirby did Batman" pitch, you had my attention. Can't wait to get this book
Alex, there is NOTHING wrong about your Batman.. It's my favorite interpretation. I truly wish DC animation could do your style, or the movies could somehow emulate your look for hero costumes.

It’s incredible to see Alex talk about interpreting another master’s work and applying it to an original take on a character.
It really shows a mastery of the craft and a sublime understanding of the work to present a convincing interpretation of *another artist and writer’s work* .
It’s also nice to see him doing simpler artwork. Shows how well those essential skills transfer. This is a must buy work of Ross’.
I LOVE the 2020 book, can't wait to get this one!! Alex, can you please, please include a fully painted version of the Justice League/Justice Society image you included in your 2022 sketchbook?! My favorite image of all time, I would love to see it fully painted (not that it isn't gorgeous in gray scale).
Wow! Your take on a Kirby Batman is too cool! The detail you put into your "Kirby shading" is great to see and I especially love it in your FF: Full Circle with Annihilus

Wow, the Jack Kirby interpretation angle is something along the lines of what I pondered recently. I was thinking about the DC Just Imagine Stan Lee line; I was thinking that what that exercise was truly about was if Marvel created/published the DC characters. IMO, I think he went the wrong direction as an image of Superman by Marvel hit my mind. I imagined that the design should have maintained color most of the elements while removing some to fit the Marvel aesthetic; no trunks, a cape that mirrored how Thor's flowed, etc. OR Omega the Unknown type design. I even figured that Stan and Co. would have his powers to be tied to his spectacles; remove them and he gets super, put them on and he's normal: that would fit with the loser trope that they're famous for. I'm gonna get this book
Alex Ross has my favourite illustration of Spider-Man ever he looks so real yet still feels comic booky if you get what i mean

I tend to like to mimic and study other artists as a “what if” in my sketch books as well so it’s actually really cool to see all of the Jack Kirby Batman stuff you mocked up.

I have the Rough Sketch, a book similar to this. And their was this pitch of a new Shazam series. I absolutely loved the idea. I really think if DC went through with Alex Ross' pitch, it would've been the definitive DC interpretation of the character.
I literally have Demon #2 and Doom Alex Ross comic displayed right next to each other on my shelf. Im ready for this haha

Such a great and fun looking Batman, but that Joker was epic! The rest of the bad guys looked really good also, especially Penguin. I didn’t even know he had a first book of this out?

astounding work! you had my money with monster mash but you won my imagination with all the fourth world batman concepts. no pressure, but it sure would be neat to see all of those wondrous ideas put to paper now or sometime down the road, in a creator owned format, when the caped crusader lapsed outright. we're just 10 short years away from that now. just some food for thought 🙂
That’s SO awesome to imagine!! An entire industry of former top notch artists doing their versions of Batman etc. And likely outselling the DC versions.

DC wanted Kirby to do the shazam/Capt.M relaunch. But Kirby was friends with CC Beck. He helped get CC get the gig. It would of been great if Kirby did CM. Image if Darkseid was CM's new arch enemy?

I had no idea there were people who thought your Batman looked bad. I feel like that's the kind of opinion that would require you to actively try to have bad taste. Anyhow, great ideas and beautiful work, as always.

I wish Alex Ross would do a Justice League saves the universe from Darkseid story, either in a 12 issue miniseries (like Justice) or a oversized book. It could show how Orion took the throne of Apkolipis. It seems like a missing story for his legacy.

Here Batman looks like a cross between Orion and Wildcat. I like it. But Bruce Timm's design for BTAS is flawless. Same goes for Alex Ross' ..Frank Miller's DKR and Jim Lee's
