Been EDC a base bugout for 4 years and very happy with it. Thinking about upgrading scales but likely will just keep carrying as is because it's a fantastic knife.
Been collecting benchmades for a few years and got my first bugout yesterday. Lol I got the CF one and love it!
After a few years away from knives it was the bugout that got back interested in them.

I feel like anyone who “breaks down boxes for a living” is a crappy example. Frankly because replaceable utility blades are the industry standard for a reason. Not a folding knife.
My thought as well. Seems utterly ridiculous to buy a knife like this when a $6 Stanley rips trough boxes. Blades are about $5 for a 100. Yet, almost every YT video cites cutting carboard. Not even funny.
As a knife collector and an Amazon vine member (free stuff for review), I get soooo many cardboard boxes delivered to my house and have never once "broke down a box" by cutting it into little pieces. I cut the tape, and fold it flat... I absolutely hate when knife reviewers make it seem like julienneing cardboard is going to male it any easier to deal with that just flattening it out... for abrasive tests, sure... I guess, but ain't no employer paying 15-20 dollars an hour for some silly employees to dull their knives. That being said, I love collecting blades and completely understand why someone would feel the need to justify that new expensive piece...
Yep, if You cut boxes for a living, then You cannot afford knives in S90V :D
Box opening consists of starting a rip in the tape. Never ever cut cardboard/paper with a folder. Only thing I have to do is get tape glue off the blade.
Hey! I was the shoe coordinator at a tjx affiliated store (I’m not a spokesperson), but we cut off the tops of shoe boxes that are connected. For me, I also fish and hunt. I definitely get mileage outside of when I used to use it when I processed shoes, but the bugout feels more nice in my hand than a utility knife. I heard the fastbacks are good, but I dont process shoes anymore and I turned knife collecting into a hobby anyways :)
I have the OD green S30V Bugout. Has the most pocket time out of my other knives across different brands. I swapped out the Grivory scales for the same Rockscale titanium handles in this video, but ultimately ended up swapping back to the Grivory because I just appreciate the original model from Benchmade.
However I’ve been longing for the M390 version. Dutch Bushcraft Knives has a great video where they absolutely torture that thing and it handles everything like a champ. Plus it just looks special compared to the other versions if you ask me. I’ll still hang on to my original Bugout because it’s been very reliable.
IMO it’s the best EDC knife that money can buy, but to each their own.
I just bought the aircraft aluminum bugout, already knicked myself... barely touched the blade during closing and it got me... what did i learn? Extremely sharp! Beautiful knife, nice ergo's, very lightweight, just a quality knife all around. The m390 will come in handy considering im a cardboard killer, it will see alot of use. Thanks for the comparison.
same thing happened to me today haha. Unboxed my new custom Bugout, and while playing with it it got my palm. The handle width is thinner than my Stryker 2, and I paid for my ignorance in blood!

I purchased the 535gry-1 model. I am pleasantly surprised. I have always used larger knives, such as a Griptilian Bone collector edition, or a Manix 2 G10 model and recently a 940-2. This knife has quickly become my EDC. Does everything I need it to on a daily basis. Fits great in my extra large hand, I wear XXL gloves. The blade is a super cutter, and the flex in the handle is not noticeable while actually gripping it. Just keeps cutting and cutting with minimal stropping. It has unexpectedly surpassed any expectations I had for it. If you are on the fence of purchasing I say go for it.

With the Spyderco Light Weight knives, I usually sand down the edges on the scales. It only takes a second to do, makes the knife feel better in the hand. Thanks for the video : )

Cool review! I really like the Benchmade bugout. I have nine of them in my collection. The carbon fiber version is definitely my favorite.
I got the M390 version for a demo knife to demonstrate for my sharpening service I want to provide. I put an 18 degree bevel on it and spent some extra time with ceramic and the strop. It got a really nice edge on it. It easily shaves facial hair and cuts paper towels pretty clean. I'm pretty happy with this little knife.
I’m a huge Bugout fan. Hopefully I get to try an aluminum one someday. I have the rest you have there.

I can second the comments on Benchmade doing carbon fiber extremely well. The carbon fiber portions on my Auto Fact look like some kind of beautiful hologram
According to me the Bugout is very much a 'love it or hate it' knife, I myself held off for a long time before buying when but now that a own a CF-elite one, a 535-5 and a 535bk-'4 I love 'em all 3 very much, they are more than capable of handling the kind of things I need a knife for (90% of people need a knife for?). Thanks for sharing!
I've had the 535BK-4 as my primary EDC for over a year and it's been a great knife. Love the scales and the blade. I'm tempted to try a Bailout just to see if I like the Tanto blade shape over the drop point.
I handled a basic Bugout several months ago and just wasn’t impressed with it. It felt cheap. I get that they wanted it to be lightweight but the perception of poor quality killed it for me. Then came the aluminum one with the black coated blade and the red accents and it was worth checking out just for the aesthetics alone. Now it’s my favorite Benchmade knife. Funny how a change of handle materials can change the knife so much for me.
*Edit to add* I’m listening to this at work so I was mainly just listening, but when you brought the Deadlock out I instantly recognized the sound of the deployment. Mine arrived yesterday and I spent most of the evening playing with it.
Enjoy the deadlock as well. It ended up winning my knife of the year despite being a dagger ground OTF.
Lots of us, especially if we're older, have been conditioned by life and experience to regard plastic as the cheap version of something. It's hard to shake that perception, even when it's no longer true.
@@faethe000 I don’t necessarily associate plastic with poor quality. For me it’s the combination of plastic plus the super light weight and flex that made it feel like poor quality.
Aluminum is quite a bit lighter than titanium just not as strong. It melts at a lot lower temps and it’s softer which makes it cheaper to work with as well as to buy raw materials.

Nothing wrong with the bugout as an EDC jewelry thing but not as a work knife. With a work knife it is simple:
1. Coatings wear eventually, and you likely don't want to be eating them, so get stonewash as it reflects less and doesn't show prints/marks/scratches like a polish. 2. Can you whittle for a straight half hour with it? If you can do work with it without pain. hotspots, or hand fatigue accidents. (the Bugout can't like most 'easy cleaning' gap in handle blades). 3. Easy sharpening is key there is no way you break down boxes at paid work speed and volume w/o hitting a staple or something worse. 4. Super steels are for stealing money from show ponies. 5. Choose an easy sharpening steel with some history otherwise when it breaks, they will if there work knives eventually, the shatter pattern and shrapnel or failure is likely not that bad unless you're really unlucky.
- As far as working steels 14C28N Stainless Steel is better than any of the above for a work knife or even 12C27 stainless steel like Mora uses or the no name stainless Victorinox uses that every fish trawler on earth pretty much uses for their handfuls of boat knives. Anything that sharpens in seconds with little skill and even no kit (hell use a window edge that is down) and won't fail in catastrophic ways is what you want working unless you like ambulances and time not getting paid.
No pocketknife of this size needs more than S30V steel. I've used the hell out of S30V (and 154CM on a mini grip) and it held an edge for a long time. 3-4 passes on a smooth stone and it's back to super sharp, when it needs it.
Super steels are overblown. But that doesn’t mean I still won’t buy them and appreciate them! But yes, for most people 154CM is more than sufficient.
Yes, I agree. Titanium is a premium component and has enhanced weight reduction, and scratch resistance. Handle materials being used in today's knives don't corrode, so no tangable improvement there. It costs more than aluminum yes, but knives that are in use get scuffed & scratched on the blade anyhow. I like the benefits that Titanium brings to quality, but for the investment and practicality in preformance I'm okay with stainless steel, or aluminium scales. Good video IIIxE. Thanks
Titanium is heavier than aluminum. The aluminum on this scale looks really good, so with it's weight reduction it's the best choice. Titanium would be a downgrade.

Correct...titanium is stronger and therefore in some applications, you can use thinner and smaller parts...handle scales being identical...the Aluminum will actually be lighter.
I have an original S30 which has always been great. Picked up the M390 at Bass Pro 5-ish months ago and it’s absolutely fantastic. I just got the s90v a couple weeks ago, and it’s great too. I’m overly addicted to sharpening and my current rig is a tsprof k03. As far as the M390 vs S90v so far they are functionally identical. Neither seems to take any longer than the other to sharpen on the K03, and the edge retention difference is negligible. Gun to my head I don’t think it matters which one you buy, they are both great. I’d recommend just buying whichever one you think looks better, or whichever one has the best sale.

Thanks for doing this video. I was hoping for something like that. I have to say I disagree a bit with your assessment of M4 toughness. It really is a very tough steel. 3V, 8670, 80c are toughness freaks, but barring those and a few others, M4 is crazy tough, and there are variables of course, as with all steels. Great video

Yeah I haven't either tbh but based on the reviews I've seen it is like ten times easier to clean plus it comes with extra springs. I just finished putting my bugout back together after a spring broke and oh man, it was painful.@@TripleEEDC
@@CombatBanana yeah there is a trick to putting axis lock knives back together. I did a video on it a while back. Once you learn the trick it’s easier.

I would bet that they did the back spacer on the varbon because if they did a similar lanyard hole cutout as on the other it would be brittle.

Great video. But I did notice that you said the blade was coated in DLC but it is actually Cerakote. Also I was wondering what type of washers is it running on ie. ceramic bearings, bronze washers? The Benchmade site does not mention the washer material.

I've carried 4 versions of the bugout and I like it but the springs break too often
I haven’t had springs break in mind. I’ve owned over one hundred Benchmades and never had a spring break on mine but I know it’s an issue that people talk about happening.
Nice write up on the bugout variants. I am still uo in the air on the m390 or the s30v with aftermarket scales. But this helps. Im leaning towards the m390. But its definitely not cheap. Also not a fan of CF on the s90v. But your review is making it difficult. Oh well. Thanks for the great review. Gained a well deserved sub 👍🏻

Go somewhere you can hold them! I am a huge carbon guy, but after holding, the aluminum came home with me. The carbon feels like a $89.00 knife unfortunately
You said 535gry-1 isn’t cerakote, but I think it is. Unless they changed it over years?
I believe it used to be smoke PVD. Not sure if they changed it since then.
i have a bench made bugout from 2019...with the green original handle super light...i love mine...im thinking about getting a new carbon fiber one not sure what but either way its gna be a good knife..and i dnt use my bugout i have it put up on the shelf with all my good quality american made knives!
I’m not a CF guy either, but that version does feel good. The two that I’ve kept have the Rockscale Critter scales, and micarta Ripps Garage Tech scales. The biggest upgrade was the Rockscale backspacer on both. I’m planning on trying Flytanium Crossfsde micarta scales for my 533. Do you have any experience with those micarta scales?
No. I had the Putman micarta scales before. I think I have two videos on them.

Why would you do a comparison video of scales without the weight???
In my opinion, splitting hairs between the weights of Micarta, G10, and CF will cause people to disproportionately value weight when we’re talking fractions of an ounce difference but major difference in feel of each one mostly unrelated to weight. If you need the weights, they are all between 1.8 ounces and 2.5 ounces from the factory with CF-elite (not CF being the lightest at 1.8 ounces. The regular Grivory one is just under 2 ounces and the CF one is just over 2 ounces. The G10 one (except for the BHQ exclusive) is a little over 2.2 ounces. The aluminum one is 2.5 ounces. I also assume most people would know that aluminum is the heaviest out of the bunch. The titanium scales are after-market so I don’t know how much those weigh.

Personally love M4 as a steel
I like Benchmade a lot, but the fact that an aluminum scaled, stock Bugout costs $300 and a titanium scaled custom shop bugout is $410 (minimum), is just unbelievably ridiculous. Warranty or not, that is some audacious price gouging. You can spend $200 for plain titanium scales at BM in the custom shop, or you can get better looking titanium scales from Flytanium for $70-$75.

I prefer titanium over CF but I prefer a solid-feeling knife over a lighter one. If you prefer solid-feeling, go with the Ti. If you prefer lighter, go with the CF.

On the carbon model the lanyard loop is aluminum. If it where carbon fiber it would wear faster then metal. Just a thought.
The 535Bk-4 don’t say USA on the blade . Yet they have m390 on other models that have USA 🤔 and the 535-4 is not dlc . Yet bench made said everything is made and assembled in the USA so what’s with that

Which scale materials is most durable, from most to least? And, any other differences between them? I have the SMKW Exclusive OD green Bugout, really love the colorway & M4 steel!!
Most durable is a little loaded and depends on specifics, so I will speak in generalitites. All else equal, I wouls rank common hanlde materials as folllows: Titanium > Aluminum > Steel > G10 > Carbon Fiber (carbon fiber will sometime be ahead of G10 and vice versa based on finishing)> FRN/Grivory
The carbon fiber version is the best, I can't praise enough of it. The aluminum one is solid but it's so heavy, it defeats the purpose of being a lightweight EDC.
I actually really like the aluminum one the best. However, carbon fiber one is also amazing. I also like S90V more than M390.
@@TripleEEDC Why don't you switch the blades and put your S-90V blade on the aluminum handle and the M390 blade onto the carbon fiber handle? ... Then you'd have your very own Grail Bugout.

I'd take micarta over all of these. It's not only strong but also provides excellent grip as well as super lightweight.
Carbon fiber is lightweight but has poor grip. Micarta is still far better.

Oddly enough, I like the aluminum on slightly more than the titanium one. The scales are just done so well and fit better in hand. Plus the M390 is perfect.
The look of your custom rockscale titanium one is great! I can't tell if those scales are the graphite or aluminum blast color. They look right in-between the two. Which one is it?

I'm a butcher for Kroger and I open 100+ boxes every day from thick cardboard lot if tape plastic bags etc. Products come in all kinds of packages. I dull knifes usually once a week I have to sharpen my knifes
What blade / Steal would you recommend for someone like me I loved my Osborne it lasted about 2 weeks before it needed sharpen.
You need something with a lot of edge retention and some level of corrosion resistance since you deal with frozen foods and outdoor truck deliveries (at least until you get the products inside) in different kinds of weather. The good news: there are many steels which are good for edge retention. The bad news: many of them are hard to sharpen unless you have a good system (like KME or Wicked Edge) and a little practice sharpening. If you have a good sharpening set, the following steels are excellent and the edge will last a while without being too brittle or too rust-prone (if cared for correctly): magnacut, S90V, Elmax, M390, 20CV, 204P, 4V, and Cruwear (this one is better coated if you are in wet environments a lot). However, most of these are not as easy to sharpen without a proper diamond sharpening system. It may sound weird but if you’re not good at sharpening at the moment, your best bet may be to stick with S30V or 154CM/CPM-154 until you get good at sharpening as these are not only easier to sharpen but less time-consuming to sharpen. With how many boxes you open due to your job, steel choice is not a question of whether you’ll sharpen but how often you will sharpen and how long each sharpening session will take.

If you’re constantly cutting and your diamond stone are good, some good S90V can go a long way. I’d recommend something thin but not super thin and must have a stout edge for your purposes. The S90V Bugout, S90V mini Freek, and TRM Neutron would be good choices for smaller options. For larger options, Spyderco Native 5 (in one of the above-mentioned steels), the M4 Freek with the coated blade, hogue Ritter RSK in 20CV, the Spyderco Shaman (in one of the above-mentioned steels), Spyderco Manix 2 (in one of the above-mentioned steels), and TRM Atom are great options. Worth noting: I did not put the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 or Para 3 on this list due to the combined aggressive taper and flat grinds. They are excellent at cutting boxes but the tips are relatively this and you may be cutting pallet straps and other things repetitively enough that I’d worry about the blade snaking near the hole or the tip snapping. Yes, people have done torture testing on those modes but you don’t see people posting snapped blades of stouter models and you do see them posting them of these two models.
@@TripleEEDC I don't think they are Dimond. What do you think about work sharp systems. Would they be worth the Investment. Or should I invest in Dimond stones bc the stones I use are just old school stone we have at work. Have to use oil on them I don't know the grit. Like I said not a knife guy. To me they are just Tools however I know that you get what you pay for My dad was a Mechanic so I know you have to suck it up and spend some money to keep your Tools maintain.
@@bmft5884 if I may add to triple e edc's reply another knife option could be the Sig Sauer K320 it comes in S30V and you can get it with a coated blade or the knifecenter exclusive has a stonewashed blade. I have a bunch of the worksharp products and the field sharpener, bench stone with tri abrasives, or the guided field sharpener will great with any of the aforementioned steels.
I keep seeing/hearing one odd thing in these reviews. Why alu. and the statement here for instance that it too is relatively light as well. Uh, Huge gorilla in the room and the common misconception.
Ti. is roughly one half the weight of ss steel for scales. No one sees to realis that Alu. is roughly one half the weight of Ti.. and this gets completely missed again and again. And of course the CF scales are substantially lighter that any of the others.
I prefer Ti. for several reasons. One, being diabetic, I have a bit of loss of feeling in my finger tips and my Osborne 940-1 is simply too light for decent control. I do have a limited production Ti. scaled numbered 904 in the Ti. scales, and even though it is quite expensive and most have them as mostly safe queens, mine is my user and will continue to be so. Love the look, feeling in the hand, and if scratched, I can simply re-bead blast the scales and they look good as new.
so now you have anther valid reason for Why alu.!

Yes. I use blue loctite as well. But I keep the pivot on the sweet spot between loose and tight
Let it break in then tighten the pivot . I like to break the knife in before I do a scale swap . Just play with it for a week and it’s good . After a week I got a little wobble , but it’s not a big deal haven’t tightened it up yet . This is on my 535-4 love it

I want to want one but they are just too popular...someone I know packs all those and a few others. I went bailout instead, cool Deadlock flex you threw in there tho...I definitely want one of those...
Do you prefer Aluminum or CF version?
It’s tough but I tend to prefer metals to CF and the aluminum is really well-done. I would pick the aluminum if I had to choose.
BM DLC coating wears away fairly quickly for people who do more than open mail with their knives.
Benchmade uses cerakote on some knives and dlc on others. Cerakote wears more quickly than DLC. Benchmade’s DLC is actually quite good.
Which one is your favorite?
I think the aluminum is actually the best one. I love titanium more than aluminum in general but the aluminum is just done so well on this.

Funny that they call them scales. Seems to me they are integral to the knife and make the knife functional. At least in this class of knife. Not something you add on. It IS the knife as much as the blade is.
None of these knives are worth the price you’re just paying for a name not the quality of the knife bench made knives are out of control with pricing
I agree they are priced too high but I disagree that the quality isn’t there. The prices have gone up across the board from all makers recently due to inflation.

Honestly, outside of highly specialized tools, you can keep S90V. More trouble than its worth, and so expensive. I really don't like it.

I’d like to see destruction tests on carbon vs aluminum. Carbon I believe can be stronger. I have the carbon and like the way it feels. Very rigid, warm, and silent. Carbon Seems indestructible.
9 months later, did you ever find out which one is stronger between Carbon Fiber vs Aluminum?
Give the relative thicknesses and the milling on the aluminum, I would guess the CF is stronger but you’ll be fine on either one if not abused significantly beyond the intended use case for this knife

I purchased an SMKW exclusive Bugout with Ti scales. The blade rub was so bad, it couldn’t be brought back to even near center.
I don’t know if the scales were put on by Benchmade or SMKW, but it was ridiculous.
Sure, aluminum is an alternative to titanium. But, a near 5 year old design with M390 and aluminum scales for $234? Nope, they can keep it.
Give me the Ti. At least Ti has a good raw material value.

I highly doubt 9 knives from Benchmade (even thin ones like the bugout) all “fell apart” unless you were batoning with them, in which case you’d deserve it for batoning with a light duty edc knife. Also, Zach from Zach’s Stuff did a torture test on the bugout and it stood up way better than expected. Also, why buy so many bugouts if they fell apart on you?

Steels are overrated. Almost any steel will work for anyones EDC. Opening boxes with 8cr13 is as easy as S90V lol. I care a lot more about how the knife feels and looks over steel material.
